This game, without question is one of the greatest games I've played. With a unique storyline and gameplay it stands out. Though the game gets a bit complicated, it all comes together later. Though I liked this game it seems to have been a huge waste of money to others. You must be somewhat of a hardcore RPGer to like it. Great anime, deep story, don't miss out on this rare game!
For true rpg player this isn't one of those FF it's better

For those of you who have played & have loved this game, we need to come to terms with a certain fact: Xenogears will never be surpassed. This is one of those games that is almost a mistake in the sense that an RPG (or video game in general) does not deserve a story this good. The subjects that this game hits on are far too deep for many people to tolerate (which is why you will find a fair share of negative reviews...some people don't want a good story, they just want fluffy graphics to mask mediocre plot lines). I won't go into details regarding the story, but let's just say that it is doubtful that any writer will be inspired to match Xenogears. And, to be honest, why should they? It seems that a majority of people are happy with mediocrity so why should a writer kill himself with a deep story when "a small rebel group looking to overthrow an evil empire/corporation" will work just fine?
This is the only RPG I have played that was 100% story. The graphics were decent (though the music was excellent), but the gameplay (classic RPG with some twists) and the story are what made this such a legend. I appreciate Monolith's attempt to capitalize on the Xenogears name with their failed Xenosaga experiment, but perhaps it was better to leave this legend alone. Xenosaga started off very promising and then, as expected, the designers destroyed all potential in the second part, ultimately killing the entire series.
There will not be anyone who will make proper prequels/sequels to Xenogears based on Perfect Works for the reasons I already stated. This is the same reason why we will never see another Chrono game again. These companies are not stupid...they made great RPGs when their fanbase was not what it is today. After FFVII was released & gained international success, Squaresoft saw where the money was. Think about how many times you have heard someone requesting a "remake of FFVII for PS2, PS3, etc". People would rather play FFVII (by all accounts a great game) remade for every new system than another game like Xenogears or Chrono Trigger (Chrono Cross was actually very fun, however).
US RPG fans will remember the painful days of the early 90s when Japan got all of the games and we got nothing. We cried about injustice and pleaded with this companies to give us what we deserve. Xenogears was a breath away from suffering the same fate, but thankfully we got this game. The problem now is different; we get all of the games translated from Japan, but the quality is just not there. I don't mean graphics and I know most people will not understand what I'm talking about. Xenogears was the final "RPG" released and is the pinnacle of what made the genre so great in the 90s.
Square-Enix is hopeless now, but hopefully some new companies will bring back the old fire.
Excellent, but...

Xenogears had me hooked from the beginning. You'd swear that you were really in the game because the characters are so lifelike in their personalities. Even though the 2-D characters looked kind of awkward with the 3D backgrounds, this doesn't detract from the game. The music is great too, along with the anime scenes in a few areas. The storyline has a lot of science fiction though, so it might be confusing to some people. Unfortunately, on Disc 2, the storyline fizzed out. The game became a linear sequence of events that you had to do until the very end, when you have to fight the final boss. I felt like I was being lead along like a sheep on Disc 2. That is my main gripe. Other than that, you'll find a winner here. If I could, I'd give it 3.5 stars.
So much potential...how did it all go wrong?

I wanted to like this game...
I really wanted to like this game...
This game had all the things that would hook me in. It had some neat visuals, a tight combo-based battle system, some cool mechs, and some anime cut scenes.
When I first started to play this game, I was enjoying it. Sure, the dialogue was corny, but because it was fun and challenging to play, I didn't mind it one bit...
UNTIL...IT HAPPENED...
You know, this game has led me to believe that former legendary comic writer Chris Claremont must be in charge of Squaresoft. (For the uninformed, he was the writer who gave us many classic X-Men stories...like "Days of Future Past" and "The Pheonix Saga". These were the kind of stories that all comics would be judged.) If you check out any of the comics he's writen over the past 10 years, you'll face many problems...like OVERWORDY MONOTONOUS AND CHEEZY DIALOGUE, TOO MANY LEFT-FIELD PLOT TWISTS THAT CONFUSE PEOPLE, AND TOO MANY CHARACTERS. This game suffers some of the same ailments. The moment you find out about Fei's multiple personality problem, you will find yourself using the attack button a lot. Not because you're going to be in a lot of fights, but because YOU ARE TRYING TO GET RID OF ALL THE MONOTONOUS TEXT THAT FILLS YOUR SCREEN! In fact, it gets even worse the moment you get to disk 2! The moment you get to disk 2, you better started taking some NO-DOZ pills because you will be treated to a 10 minute cutscene with even more monotonous text to skip through! It has gotten so tedious that even the things I liked about the game are no longer enough to get me to complete it.
I hope that someday, Squaresoft realizes that confusing plot twists and overwordy, monotonous text do not a compelling story make. It is their refusal to learn that very lesson that keeps them from having a RPG with the charm of the SNES RPGs. It also kept me from enjoying this game.
Back to CHRONO TRIGGER for me.
Absolutely the best game on Playstation!!

Xenogears has to be one of the best games ever. The plot is absolutely mind blowing and the character development is one of the best I have ever seen in an RPG.
I don't want to get too involved with the plot, (since I don't want to ruin it)but I'll explain it the best I can. You play the role of Fei, an orphan who was found outside of the small town of Lahan. Three years later, his best friends are getting married, but the night before,A group of gears crash land in Lahan. Fei, trying to save everyone climbs, into an unmanned gear, but upon getting in, the gear malfunctions and kills almost everyone in the town. Everyone is quick to blame Fei for it, so he embarks on a journey to find out about his past and what really caused the malfunction of the gear.
The game really takes off from there, it gets better and better as it goes along. The character development is fantastic, each and every character has a story behind them, and keeps making you want to find out more and more about them.
My only complaint is: The dungeons are EXTREMELY annoying. If you miss one thing, you have to do it over from the beginning. It gets more frustrating than challenging.
The battle system is turn-based, and it might take a little while to get used to,(for hand-to-hand and gear)but once you do get used it, it's one of the best.
The music score is very nice, the anime scenes are fantastic, and the game will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is definitely one of my favorites (only behind Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3). I can't recommend a better game, GET IT ASAP!!!

Better than Final Fantasy VI, VII & VIII? Better than Crono Trigger and Chrono Cross? Better than Lunar 1 & 2? No, Xenogears is better than all those combined. What's that you say, ready to rip my head off? Good...because I have yet to get started. When Square released Xenogears in the land of the rising sun (that's Japan for you D students), it was met with applause and praise, but when US gamers first heard about the game, it was met with shock and disappointment. Square offices in Japan released a press statement saying that Xenogears would most likely never make it the States due to its serious religous themes. Guess what? Xenogears arrived after all. The religous themes to the game are constant, and is an integral part of Xenogears' completely original and breathtaking story. Don't think the religous themes are preachy though, as it isn't. God lies in the ocean, one-winged angels existed, cities float in the sky, and Gears are all the rage. Despite everything about Xenogears though, the story is centered around one young man: Fei Fong Wong. His mysterious past is unraveled to the gamer little by little and is utterly shocking. Fei was dropped off to a stranger as a child, bloody and unconscious, by a mysterious man. What unfolds through Fei's tale is nothing short of pure genius. What you learn about Fei is engrossing. Characters aren't what they seem, secrets and backstabbing goes on everywhere you turn, and you're not sure who to trust half the time--chances are, you're gonna walk away from this game paranoid, too. While I'm trying not to spoil anything, there's one particular moment when Fei learns about what really happened to his mother--it's hands down the most disturbing scene in video game history. The cut scene that shows this moment is ten times more powerful than the death of a certain character in Final Fantasy VII (and it's proof that cut scenes ARE important in games). It's, as I said, disturbing, shocking, and you feel Fei's pain like you were in his shoes. It's one of the greatest moments in video game history. And Xenogears is filled with lots of these moments throughout its incredibly long tale. I'd give more away, but really, you should just play this yourself. The music isn't half bad either. I've never really been a video game music fan (I listen to the real stuff), but I did enjoy it nonetheless. It's a dreamy mix of ambient and electronic music. The control is your standard RPG stuff, nothing new, but at least it isn't horrible. The combat sequences are original and (for once) fun. While it's still turn based, you can chain-link attacks and you even have super combos that are called Deathblows. Very innovative, and very fun. You can also fight in your gear, too. This changes the mechanics of the battle, and adds a new scope to it all. It's even more innovative, and it's even more fun. The disks that make up this game are filled with lots of text. Lots and lots of text. The length of Xenogears makes Final Fantasy VII look like a stroll around the block, and it only takes up two disks. That's what will seperate the boys from the men--will you have the skill and the patience to beat Xenogears? Or will you be going back to yet another game of Final Fantasy VII? Simply put--if you call yourself an RPG fan and don't own this, you're not a real RPG fan; if you call yourself a gamer and don't own this, you're not a real gamer. This is one of the greatest tales in video game history. It's epic, it's brilliant, it's shocking, and it's a must-own. If games were human, Xenogears would be a god among men. Good luck on finding a copy nowadays though...

The story line is great, from start to finish it was great. From the time I turn on the game I was stuck and I mean that. I have played this game over 12 times and ever time I find it just as exciting as the frist time. I wish they woud make Xenogear 2. What a game it would be........;-) My favorite characters Fei,Elly,Citan(oh ya no one could beat Citan battle tactics).Fei's martial arts are breath taking and one tough guy.I love this game...............I real do wish and pray one day Squaresoft well make the second one.I liked all the characters, if you play all they turn out to be great fighters.I laugh and cried. from the start I wanted Fei and Elly to be together, and you got to love Bart,a good fighter too. Okay!!!!!!!they all are great, but as always we "RPG" people have favorites. That's it for now I could go on for hours about this game..................oh Ya!!!!!!!!!!!

Xenogears is a rather controversial RPG from the RPG god Squaresoft. I've found that the majority of people love this game; however, there are many out there who find it frustrating, and their opinions are not without merit. After all, the battle systems do have their flaws, and the storyline can be a bit over-complicated. The latter is abound with sometimes gratuitous religious references and can often come off as pretentious. However, if you look past that, you have a storyline that is good enough to rival even the best fantasy novels. You may find this game frustrating, but I do suggest that you at least take the time to play through it at least once. I myself rather liked it for the intrigue and the Final Fantasy-like style of presentation. Despite its many flaws, this is a game that I will gladly display on my shelf for years to come.
