Best RPG ever created!

One word: Breathtaking. Xenogears has it all. Literally. Im not a fan of the FF series mainly because it tries to make the graphics to realisitic, thats why Xenogears floats my boat. I love games that look like this. Its a whole new world when you first play it. Oh, wouldnt it be nice to live in a village like Lahan? You can totally connect with the characters even if you have only played the game for 1/2 hour (Lahan incident for example) This game reminds me of Breath of Fire 3, where the graphics were concerned. Which is a good thing. If Square would have more games like Xenogears I would be a fan of them, but it looks like their focus is FF, which I dont like that much. I havent beat this game yet, Ive only put in 18 hours and Ive already had a couple of places that had me stumped. The storyline is excellent. I like the idea of not completely learning everything all at once. This game would have caused a lot more controversy if it wasnt overshadowed by FF

Forget FF8: this is Square's best 32-bit effort.

It seems that as time goes on, the RPG juggernaut Square seems to be leaning more on graphical flash and whimsey than on what made them so great in the first place: the story (which, by the way, if you're new to rpg's, you owe it to yourself to play FF3 and Lunar, two of the best ever in the genre). Xenogears represents a stark turnaround from FF7, which was in itself a good game, but not a hllmark by any means. Xenogears does have some flash, but its strength rightfully lies in its incredibly complex plot. My only major complaint is that with all of the buildup and tension provided in the first disc, the second disc is a slight letdown. And be forwarned, this game can get LONG, upwards of 100+ hours if you go through every nook and cranny. But I guess that's partially what RPG's are about...

Not your typical love story by any means

Xenogears is by far the best game I've ever played on any console. I would recommend this game to anyone impulse buying, or RPG fans already intent on buying a classic. Xenogears entertains and subdues in all aspects of the game. The richness and complexity of the storyline is awe-inspiring, as it portrays a world much like our own. It explores the positives and negatives of romance, religion and technology, as well as other avenues. The thing I like best about this game, however, is the richness and beauty of the soundtrack. This game has a score unlike any other in the world today. Xenogears will become a classic and is definitely an innovation in the gaming industry.

Xenogears lives up to the Squaresoft name

Jeez, when I first picked up a Squaresoft game that WASN'T a Final Fantasy Game, and after seeing things like Bushido Blade, I really didn't know what to expect (the truth was, I didn't foresee much excitement in the future). I was blown away! Xenogears brought an awesome story to life, with a whole bunch of cool characters and plenty of action, as well as a new fighting system: the gears. TWO whole disks of nonstop fun, with a story translation better than any I've run into so far. The animation is beautiful, the people are drawn as anime, and the music is definitely a plus. Also, the new freedom of the character control and the camera was so much greater than I was used to in an RPG. The only problem? The story could have been executed so much better than it was, and Squaresoft could have taken the game easily onto a third disk with all the loose ends they left. There was so much potential in this one-of-a-kind storyline, but for some reason, it wasn't carried out. Still, the game wasn't a disappointment, and provided me with nearly an entire summer of fun. To anyone that luvs Final Fantasy, RPG's in general, or Science Fiction/Fantasy, I recommend this game to you.

My Favorite RPG.

In terms of plot, Xenogears has it all. Sure, some people think it ripped off Neon Genesis Evangelion--and there ARE a lot of similarities--but Xenogears is an incredible game, despite of this. It's story is so involved and complex that, although it might not draw in everyone right away, by the time you're a bit into the game, you're so hooked you're not likely to do much but sleep and play this game. Eating? Yeah, right, there's Xenogears to be played! An effective diet if ever there was one...well, anyway, Xenogears had this addictive effect on me, anyway. And there's just so much TO it. Although there are some people I know who just bitterly despise this game, I can't see where they're coming from. I got it a little after last Christmas...(ah, nostlagia) and...wow. It's just WOW. Play it, good friends. Play it, adore it, thank yourself for getting it.

Best game...

When I first played it, I was absolutely amazed by the storyline, sound, graphic. Graphics are animated which I absolutely love. Sound is very good as other Square's musics are awesome. STORYLINE. THE BEST STORYLINE EVER!!! Although it's very complicated to understand, once you know who's who and what's going on. It will be the best storyline among all the other RPGs. JUST BUY IT AND PLAY FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!!

From the moment I began, this game really swept me up into the mystery of who Fei really was, what had happened to him, and how he had been left with no memories. I played the game through to the end, it took about a month for me to finally beat it. The end is a little bit of a letdown, and the plot can be somewhat confusing at times. But the graphics are beautiful & solving the puzzle of Fei was a lot of fun, although I realized the truth about who and what he was long before it was officially revealed.

Possibly One of the Best RPGs on the Playstation

This game is possibly on of the best games ever made. I absolutly love this game. This has the same battle system as Chrono Cross and the character graphics looks like Chrono Trigger. The only problem is that the translation isn't first rate. But otherwards BUY THIS GAME.

A Confusing Masterpiece

Xenogears is basically an RPG you will either love or hate. Most people love it for its complex storyline and interesting characters. Others hate it because they find the story a little TOO complex and the actual gameplay boring. Me, I fall into the former catagory. While not without its faults, Xenogears is an excellent RPG and one no Square nor RPG fan should be without.

Let me start by saying that the storyline in Xenogears is one of the best and most interesting of any RPG on the market today. Without going into too much detail on what it's about, let me say that there are so many twists and turns in the story, you may lose direction. This, of course, is pretty much for better or for worse as again the story may get a little too complex for some. Still, when taken as a whole, the story really draws you in like no other RPG and is bound to be the driving force for most people with this game.

The character development in this game is also first rate. The main character is, of course, Fei Fong Wong. A character who seems to have little memory of his past and is confused as to who he really is. You figure this out already at the beginning of the game, when Fei's home village is under attack and he somehow ends up uncontrollably fighting these enemies via "gear" (think Giant battle robots controlled via pilot). He is kicked out of the village as a result. Probably the main supporting character is medical doctor Citan (refered to as "doc" by Fei). Citan does quite a bit to aid Fei on his quest, and serves as a sort of "Super Sleuth" throughout the story. One more character worth mentioning is Elly, a member of Solaris who is constantly on a mission to destroy the lambs (land dwellers), but often ends up holding back because of her secret friendship with Fei.

Finally, the battle system in this game is one of the best of any RPG. It's very user friendly and easy to learn. Also, the numerous attack combos you can perform in this game help to keep the battles interesting, despite the fact that they tend to be a little too long at times.

No doubt, you're probably wondering why I gave this game four stars rather than five. Well, here's why: The Dungeons. Many of the game's dungeons are annoying mazes with far too many battles and not enough action. To make matters even worse, save points are so few and far apart. You could come "this close" to completing a dungeon, then die, and have to start almost at the very beginning again. It's both annoying and frustrating.

Also, I was a little let down by the music in this game. A lot of people say Xenogears has among the best video game soundtracks ever. Quite frankly, I beg to differ. Sure, XG has a fine soundtrack. But many of the songs tend to repeat all too often and the quality of the midi samples could have been much better. Fortunately, the actual compositions more than make up for this shortcoming. And the battle theme has to be one of the best I have ever heard in an RPG (Square or not).

So overall, I think everybody should give Xenogears a try. Its deep storyline is definitely bound to draw you in. And if you can get past the annoying dungeons, there's plenty of fun to be had with this game.
