A Flawless Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 27 / 27

Metal Gear Solid is probably the best game I've ever played. It's not just another action game, its got some really innovative stuff in it. The biggest thing about this game is the fact that you have to be stealthy. This isn't just another game full of mindless gunfights; if you charge into every enemy you see, you won't make it far. Also, MGS has one of the best video game stories ever, and it has great voice talents to back it up. The boss fights are cool too because a lot of them require some neat strategies. For those of you who are fans of first person shooters, don't worry, there's still plenty of weapons and gadgets in MGS. The only complaint I've ever heard about this game is that is's too short. That may be true, but Resident Evil 2 is even shorter and it didn't get critisism over it. Besides, you'll have to play through multiple times to see both endings and use the extras you get for beating the game. Basically, MGS has been setting the standard for games like Syphon Filter, and I think it always will.

one of the best for the PSX and possibly of all time

When I heard there was to be a Metal Gear game released on the Playstation, I was happy. I had been a long time fan of the series from the very first game on the NES and even through the crappy Snake's Revenge. I didn't know if that next generation of gamers would know anything about the series, but I was hoping for a good game. My expectations were surpassed beyond anything I could have hoped for. Not only was Metal Gear Solid a good game, it was a great game. Metal Gear Solid is one of the best games (if not the best game) on the Playstation and it should take its place as one of the top games of all time.

While previous Metal Gear games had suggested that stealth was the way to go, and other games had used the concept, I had never seen stealth developed as well as it was in Metal Gear Solid. It was not only a good idea, it was the only way to go. You needed to avoid enemies (as best you could) to be able to make it through the game. When you killed an enemy, you had to do it in a way that nobody saw you or heard you. Metal Gear Solid is called a Tactical Espionage game, and it means just that. You are a spy and spies should not be seen or heard.

Like the other Metal Gear games, you play as Solid Snake (now the legendary Solid Snake). It is your mission to infiltrate the Shadow Moses Island in Alaska, rescue a hostage and see what is going on. From the moment that you begin the game, what you know is being tested and your place in the story is being escalated quickly. You are handed a lot of information about the plot and the reasons behind everything. This game has some very memorable scenes and memorable enemies. Overall, this is one of the best games on the system and I would recommend it to anybody.

Better than Bond!

I just recently bought Metal Gear Solid I have to say that it is a great game.

I just got a PS2 and never had a PS, all my friends kept talking about Metal Gear Solid. MGS this, MGS that. So I bought. Got it for a reasonable price..., but the game is worth much more.

Even the Graphics are great (compared to PS2). The Character designs are different and are very interesting. But there is not a lot of variety of where you go. You are infiltrating ONE base. Even though the background has very little variety, the attention to all the detail is great. You can see the breath of Solid Snake in the cold air.

The Gameplay is magnificent. You are playing a movie. Stealth is the key. If you don't like hiding and don't like sneaking around and would rather go around guns blazing like James Bond then it will take a little getting used to the gameplay. (Hell I survived, you should too.)

The Story is first-class. It is also dead serious, no funny bussiness. The stakes are extremely high. There are quite a lot of segments to watch though. But If you are into the game, you probably won't mind. But trust me, the characters, all of them, are very interesting. The lines (especially near the end after the sniper fight) are great. Everybody in the story, shows a lot of feeling, making you feel how they feel.

The Music pumps you up. If you get caught a siren rings out, everytime I got caught I jumped out of my seat. The music during the cut scenes also help show the emotion of the characters.

There are also 2 different endings for this game. But other than that there is not much reason to replay the game. But I loved it, and I'm on third time through.

One of the only problems is that the game is short. Beat it in about 11-12 hours but those hours were fully enjoyed. Also play this game before part 2 comes out, you will regret it if you don't.

Graphics: 5/5 Story: 5/5 Gameplay: 4 and 3/4 out of 5 (learning curve is brutal) Replayability: 4/5

Total: 4 and 3/4 out of 5 (Definitely a must buy)

Video game perfection.

The Metal Gear Solid series is one of the greatest series of video games ever made and this is where it all started.

From the story, to the graphics, and to the music and settings, this game will amaze you. The production values and quality of this game are tremendous.

And the gameplay?
Brilliant! As those Guiness guys would say...

The key to this game is stealth and not all out running and gunning. If you fight upwards of two guys at a time, you will die. Its pretty much that simple.

But to help you in your stealth mission is a boatload of cool gadgets that would make James Bond blush. You got silenced handguns and machine guns. Thermal goggles. Night vision goggles. Mine detectors. And the simple yet fun cardboard boxes.
Every item in this game has its own special and unique uses from ketchup to cigarettes.

And the best part of this game are the boss battles. Each boss is truly unique, memorable, and a joy to fight. You will have a blast from Psycho Mantis to the Ninja to the climatic battle vs the towering Metal Gear.

This game was voted as the greatest Playstation game of all time by both IGN and Gamespot and for good reason. It is simply one of the best games ever made and already a timeless classic.

The best game ever from Konami

Many gamers know the words "Metal Gear" to be associated of the truly innovative NES title released some ten or eleven years ago. Truly revolutionary for that time, it was the only action game that didn't allow you to just go running around looking for fights; otherwise the same thing that would happen in real life to a one-man army would happen to you in the game. It made you think. Few games do this, and that's what makes this game, no, this franchise, so great.

MGS follows te never-ending story of one Solid Snake, a one-man army working to stop terrorists from an organization named FOX-HOUND from launching a nuclear warhead from a killing machine named Metal Gear. Although this game may seem too hard for even a seasoned gamer, that's because they're approching the game the wrong way. You can't expect to go the whole game without getting caught by a guard or without not quite knowing what to do. That's where this game's real beauty kicks in.

The cut-scenes, taken right from the in-game engine, work flawlessly with gameplay to give the feeling of playing a movie more than a game. The player MUST use stealth tactics, or he/she won't survive the first level, which is (believe it or not) the easiest one. The game gets progressively harder, but you never get discouraged enough to just give up. It keeps bringing you back for more. There are weapons a-plenty, and just because you won't be using them much (if you're smart,) you better get anything you can. If you don't like using your head, you won't like this game. One last tip: the CODEC system used to communicate with others is a valuable too against bosses. Use it whenever you don't know what to do.

RATINGS (1-5) Graphics: 5- truly remarkable. You can even see Snake's breath when it's cold in a certain area! Sound: 5- all the sounds are in there, and the noise you make also affects whether you get caught or not. Control: 5- superb. Snake handles like a well-oiled... something. Some innovative ways to use both controller ports by Konami, as well.. (wait 'til you fight Psycho Mantis; you'll find out.) Funocity: 5- DID YOU EXPECT ANYTHING ELSE?!?

OVERALL: 5 out of 5- it's just too good to deserve anything else. Be sure to pick this one up if you haven't already.

Greatest Game Ever? Metal Gear Solid Certainly Makes a Case

Get ready, get set, and prepare yourself for what is arguably the greatest game ever made for any game console. You are Solid Snake, a former special forces agent who has spent the last few years retired in the Alaskan Wilderness. But you've been forced out of retirement by your former bosses and have been assigned the incredible task of infiltrating a military installation which has been taken control by agents of your former group "Fox Hound" and stop them from using a new and incredibly powerful weapon called "Metal Gear" in a plot to bring about the cold war and world domination.Along the way, you run into several twists and turns, not to mention a beautiful woman who is helping you along the way, and a mysterious ninja who seems very familiar. How will you combat this impossible situation? Not with guns or bombs or even a knife, but with a pack of cigarrettes, a tranciever to keep in contact with your allies, a pair of binoculars, and your most valuable weapon, a keen sense of stealth. Metal Gear Solid has it all; action, drama, comedy. The story itself is worth purchasing the game. If there were problems which I've found with MGS its that once you beat the game (Hint: There are two separate endings), when you play it a second time its never as fun or exciting as the first time. Also, both endings are somewhat anticlimatic. But thats the problem facing most all games. And with Metal Gear Solid, the challenge isn't so much finding out how its going to end, but its trying to stay alive long enough to even see the next plot twist.

Two GIANT thumbs up!

About eleven years ago, I played the original Metal Gear on the NES. LOVED IT! How could you not like a game with a super cool, super deadly commando who smokes as the hero? Of course, a few things were silly, like one man (you) being able to carry enough weapons and ammo to keep a platoon of Marines happy, and the sometimes terrible Japanese to American language translation. But the graphics, gameplay and plot were outstanding. the next game, Snake's Revenge was not that great, but hard-core Snake lovers may have found a few thrills therein. Years passed, and Snake seemed to have retired. But then, on the Playstation, came the greatist game I have ever played! Graphics were great,(almost film noirish), the Tom Clancyesque plot was wonderful, and I had fun doing bad things to the guards (snapping necks, blowing away with C-4 charges). All in all, A top notch game, worthy of anyone's time and effort. (Nice to see that Snake can still carry an arsenal of weapons and ammo after all these years).

Challenging and Entertaining

Never have I played a game with a more cinematic feel than Metal Gear Solid. The storyline is fanastic, and the gameplay is excellent. Though sometimes you wish that there was a way to skip through some of the longer segments, especially the third or forth time through.

You can run up behind a guard and snap his neck or use his as a human bullet shield, draw a bead on a terrorist with the laser sight on your (hopefully silenced) pistol, or empty the clip on your assault rifle as you rush through a room. All in all, stealth as well as force is the way to go, as you are a single operative up against an army of genome soldiers. (Yes, you /can/ kill almost every soldier you come across, it's just harder. Much harder.)

So go ahead, toss a grenade into the tank that's trying to gun you down, take on a helicopter with a SAM launcher, and lure someone into the sights of a sniple rifle with the sound of a ricocheting bullet -- it's all there and all exciting. A really great game.

With one odd thing. You are /the/ black ops agent, best of the best: Solid Snake. You grab the highest quality equipment from hidden caches in the base and from the soldiers themselves. And one of the more useful pieces of this great, high tech arsenal is: a cardboard box. What's more, hiding in the box actually fools these elite genome soldiers, who will only question, "What's da box?" Ah, well, no one's perfect. :)
