This Game is THE game that shows how video games should be. With its intense story and riviting gameplay this is a definate must have for anyone who has a playstation. The first time you beat the game it is a feeling like no other...like you just completed something really great(i should know, i just beat the game today).THe concept of sneaking around and using skill to survive is just amazing. And the graphics are top notch if you consider the other games for this system. And the AI is amazing as far as games go.They respond to anything that you do.with a certain reation...whether it be making noise or moving in a cardboard box. This is really a classic game.

An obsession

Metal Gear Solid is one of the greatest games ever made! Born from the mind of Hideo Kojima, what could be better than finally seeing our hero Solid Snake in 3D?
This is the fourth installment in the Metal Gear series and is by far the best. The graphics for the time are simply impressive. Game play is excellent, it has a very easy flow to it. The music in the game is definitely some of the best I have ever heard, and I would suggest the official soundtrack to complete the experience.

Some players are going to complain that the enemies are too predictable and that you can just walk around only using Snake's radar. I ask if any of them have ever tired to play the game on a harder setting than easy, or without the radar. It becomes clear that MGS is more than just a game; it is a full-blown training in stealth and tactical espionage.

With a load of new characters, enemies, and a few from the past ;) there is no doubt that anyone playing this game will become quickly addicted. Weapons and options have been expanded on to allow for more freedom of game play.

A few low points are: some of the areas in the game are too dark, first-person weapon control is difficult, cut scenes are a bit long, and if played on a PS2 characters will appear grainy.

High points: voice actors (including David Hayter, the writer The Hulk and The Scorpion King), awesome DCV's (digitally captured videos), and a truly believable story line. Furthermore, the plot twists and secrets will ensure that this game won't be shelved after beating it just once.

Metal Gear Solid is THE game for the PS1 platform, and it is still just as good when played on your PS2.

*cringe*

All right, I am just going to let it out:THIS GAME ROCKS! There is a great plot behind it, great action, and some romance to top it all off. I was just plain SCARED when Meryl was all hitting on snake like some drunkard like "quick! make love to me! oh I love you!"

graphics-eww. I don't think the characters even have a face. My friend zoomed in on Meryl and her eyes were like big dark pits of doom ("scream" music plays and it zooms in on snake's face one frame at a time). although the graphics are horrible in the game, you can at least see all of the details on their face during codec transmissions. i didn't even know Meryl had red hair until i saw her in person.

plot-excellent. it is kind of deep and all, but at least it has a thick one, unlike some ridiculous games like digimon world 3 and other cheesy games that were based on anime for 5 yr olds, lol)

music-you can just here the wonderful harmony of the bass instruments and the choir. together it makes a dark, deep tone, yet pleasing to the ear. I especially like the ending song when you beat it (which I have had to sit through three long times). It sounds like celtic music. It is just so long and you can't skip it. (note:I have beat the game twice, except I accidentally hit x instead of circle when it says "do you want to save this", so i had to beat liquid again).

voice acting-the voice acting is great. snake's voice was well selected. meryl sounds a little young though, as do all girls than normally come from japanese anime or video games when an english voice actor is selected for them)

controls-whew. They are unusual, since most games have x as your weapon button, instead of square. The controls also cost me to have to fight liquid more times than needed. Yet the fact that they are different makes it harder to adapt to it, which is exciting.

battles-the boss fights are suprisingly enjoyable. When you are new to the game, the easy ones always get you, but after you have beaten them once or twice, they are a piece of cake(when I fought Metal Gear Rex for the first time, it was easy until the second part whereas I lost about 8 times, but when I fought him after getting stealth, I beat him on the first try!). The enjoyable fights are:
Cyborg Ninja(Gray Fox)
Psycho Mantis
The Hind-D
Liquid Snake
The easy ones are:
Psycho Mantis
M1 Tank
Revolver Ocelot(I beat him in under a minute, serious)
Sniper Wolf(both times, except it is kinda hard to find her in the snowfield)
The just plain annoying fights (and other parts)are:
The Hind-D
Ocelot's Torture(when you are trying to beat it. I did the ketchup thing and it didn't work once)
Metal Gear Rex
(sorta)Gray Fox(he turns invisible, which is annoying if you don't have thermal goggles)
last, but CERTAINLY not least, Liquid Snake(you have to fight him with your bare hands, plus you have to beat him in under 3 minutes, and he rams you alot)

overall rating-4 out of five. the graphics cost it the 5. it seems to me like they were in a hurry and just slapped it in.

highlights:funny and wierd-when meryl was hittin on snake, as i listed above (that goes under the "wierd things" category), and when you begin the fight with Psycho Mantis and he tells you to set your controller on the floor and he "telepathically" moves it. that was a real joke.

Rated M for Mature-violence, language, somewhat sexual related material (not nudity, just meryl hitting on snake and other things, such as Colonel Cambell having a kid with his dead brother's wife(Meryl), but he thought he was her uncle and finds out at the end of the game he is her father, parents, no need to be alarmed), and a little bit of blood, and you cannot even see it because of the many objects surrounding you. might see a drop, but not not anything serious. Plus the most terrifying thing in the game: Solid Snake is cool and all, but at the end of the game, the most terrifying happens: SNAKE REVEALS HIS REAL NAME! Boy is it mundane, his name is...is...(twitch cringe) DAVID!

snaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!

metal gear solid creator Hideo Kojima is truly a genious in knowing how to wow people. the first time i saw this game was on a demo disc and it was in Japanese, which is always cool, and after just watching the into movie, i could tell that this was unlike any other game i have ever played.

everything, while outdated in looks, is so realistic. which is maybe why i liked this title so much. that, and the characters are freaking amazing. Solid Snake is my hero, and i wish he were a real person so i could meet him and get a picture of him a cardboard box. this is another reason why i like the game and the rest of the series, the humor. while funny, most of it still has a point. sure, it's funny to see a guy sneaking around under a box, but it's also very stealthy and strategic. as long as you don't move while the enemy is watching, you're good to go. using the box is like an ongoing game of red light green light. except in this game you can pop out and break the guy's neck. also, knocking on walls is sometimes funny, but all the time useful. knock on a wall to lure an enemy into a mine you secretly placed near a truck. there are countless ways to enjoy dispatching your enemies, even without the use of weapons. leading them around circles with your footprints in the snow is also humorous.

but enough about the comedy, and onto the meat of the game. the story. while not all convoluted (see also: metal gear solid: sons of liberty.), the story still maintains a good conspiracy type theme involving the government and a rebel group of terrorists known as Foxhound.

the members of Foxhound are some of the most memorable in videogame history. the first, Revolver Ocelot, a gunsling, six-shooting Soviet that sadly loses a hand during an encounter earlier on in the game. Vulcan Raven, a giant and shaman, he wields a gigantic gatling gun and resides in a warehouse freezer where he talks to his fellow ravens. Sniper Wolf, a sleek and sexy, well, sniper, that has a reputation for always getting her target. Psycho Mantis, a war guinea pig and avid gas mask wearer that also has psychic and telekenetic abilities. the leader of them all is Liquid Snake, Solid Snake's "brother". he's pretty much just an arrogant, powerhungry jerk hell bent on world domination/ a good end boss to really get the urge to kill. other key players include: the legendary Gray Fox/the ninja/one of the coolest freakin' creations in all of videogame history. his optic camo and razor sharp katana (a gun later in the game) are just too cool. He slices up enemies like they're butter and looks cool as hell doing so. he is by far, next to solid snake, the coolest character ever imagined. but they wouldn't be nearly as cool if it weren't for the story behind it all, which i'm not going to get into, you'll have to buy the game if you want to know more about it. there is also a woman in the game named Meryl, who is an army brat and snake's love interest, kinda.

there is also a VR training mission part to the game. it is quite fun, especially if you have a very competitive relationship with a friend or family member that likes games. you can easily lose hours tryin to shave off a tenth of a second off your opponents time. my friend and i would spend entire days just playing the VR missions. after we couldn't beat each other anymore, we called it a tie. there is a "technical wizard" you can watch go through all the various stages to give you a better idea of how you can get the best possible time. but if you are anywhere near as good as my friend and i got at the stages, this techinical wizard will look extremely slow and stupid. man...those where the good old days. and the greatest thing is, you don't unlock a damn thing for beating any of the missions, just more variants of the same, like doing them with weapons, stealth, cardboard box...oh well, it's still a great distraction. and it's way better than the VR missions game that game out, but in that you get to be Gray Fox for a couple missions, which is amazing. cloaking and slicing people to ribbons, sign me up!

the cinematics in this game, even by today's standards, are some of the most well crafted to date. enemies are all introduced in an impressive manner and even scenes of pure information and dialogue are fun to watch (at least the first time). the voice acting is superb and the whole thing comes off as something of movie-quality work. this game isn't a classic for no reason. check it out and you'll understand why. and if you can't stand the blocky graphics of the psone, get the re-vamped Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, for the gamecube. it's the same tale, with some minor added and changed stuff, but nothing major. either way, it's well worth you money, and so cheap for such a masterpiece. no one should be without a copy of this game.

The best Playstation game ever

Metal Gear Solid can be said in three words. Brilliant,Amazing, FUN! Metal Gear Solid is one of Hideo Kojimas finest. It has a very superb plot, Superb characters and lots of great dialoug. Metal Gear Solid was a very hyped up game in 98' and lived up to the hype. I simply loved this game. Metal Gear Solid has bin called by man fans and gamesites as one of the best PS1 Action games. I totally agree and I think it's not only the best Action game but also One of the best games ever created. It has a brilliant story line which I won't bring up since You can find time to read other reviewers since they pretty much tell you. The game is a stealth game. It pretty old Stealth game Acctually, the game is about 7-8 years old. I was one of many Fans to buy this amazing game when it first hit stores. Metal Gear Solid earns its 5 for these things. Story, Gameplay and Villans. The villans in this game are awesome. From the moment you get to the Ocelot fight to getting your hands on Rex You will love this game. Metal Gear solid Has bin one of the most Popular Playstation games and has spawned sequals(ala MGS2 and now Mgs3) And what makes Metal Gear Solid one of the best games is also the fact that Metal Gear Solid has one of the best Storylines in a game. Sure there are some plot holes in the series but Kojima did that for us(the fans) to make our on Theories and to guess and what not once the next one comes out. If you've had a Playstation for a loooong time and don't have Metal Gear Solid in your PS library Then I donno what the hell is wrong with you.

Metal gear solid has the most complex and often perplexing storyline I have ever seen in a video game, hands down. It will always have you on your toes, literally. I have seen many movies, and I can honestly say this game has a better storyline than most movies. Here is what you need to know..

Graphics- 100/100 The graphics were top of the line when this game first came out, and even to this day they look great. There is so much detail to every aspect of the game, and even compared to most newer games, this game wins out. Back when I first played it in about early 2000 or so, the graphics were the best the playstation had to offer, and that's a year or so after this game came out, which is pretty astonishing. There is even a scene where Snake is in the girls bathroom, and there is a mirror which perfectly reflects everything. I mean, back when this game came out that was a pretty big feat both graphically and attention wise. Most games just don't pay the kind of attention this game does.

Sound- 100/100 Perfect. Just flawless. There isn't much of an actual soundtrack, but the music is incredibly atmospheric and will make you feel like you are Solid Snake, infiltrating a nuclear base. The voice-overs are the best I have ever seen in a video game. Solid Snakes voice over is perfect, and just about everyone elses fits their personality and there image. Otacon's fits him perfectly, so do Meryl's and Liquid Snake's.
Seriously though, this game has incredible sound and has never been surpassed by any action game to date.

Gameplay- 100/100 I have heard people complain about the poor camera views limiting the gameplay, but in my opinion, the camera views perfectly fit this game and the game wouldn't be the same without them. Sure, it would have been nice to have a first person perspective while using the weapons, but it's all the same to me. I think it is perfectly fine having to shoot enemies in a third person view, and it works better with the type of graphics that it has. When you are spotted, enemies will storm in from all directions to stop you, something that seperates this game from all others. This game gives you good reason to want to play it safe, but still allows you you have some action packed fun as well, if you want to take a chance that is. Also, this game has an incredible storyline but doesn't throw it in your face all the time. MGS2 drags the storyline on eccesively and bores you with excruciatingly long cut scenes and codec conversations. I remember using the square button to skip most of the cut scenes in MGS2. The problem with MG2 is that the storyline is too complex for the good of the game. I mean, much of it is pointless grubble and the game bores you by making you listen to conversations about crap that doesn't apply necessarily to the main storyline, making it a waste of time. This game, however, truly has a wonderful , complex storyline that you will WANT to watch and listen to. Every conversation and cut scene adds to the game flawlessly, so you will probably never get bored, although I am sure you will find yourself reading the codec conversations manually instead of listening to the people talk, since they tend to talk rather slowly and take up a bit too much gameplay.

Overall- 100/100 This game is as perfect as it gets, and I have beaten it at least 15 times, if not more. Even to this day it is a pleasure to play, and I don't think it will get old any time soon.

Hideo Kojima brings another gripping story to the table!

I decided just out of curiosity to check out the reviews of people who gave this game 1 and 2 stars. They all said the same thing, and I agreed with some of it. I'll be the first to admit that Metal Gear Solid is short. Skipping cut scenes, I can be the game in about 2 and a half hours now. I'll also admit that the graphics are dated, however for their time they were amazing! Sure, I'll even admit that some of the dialogue was cheesy.

But I will never agree that the plotline of Metal Gear Solid is stupid, slow, or senseless. As a matter of fact, I don't think there is a better story. Of all the movies I've watched, books I've read, and games I've played, I've never expierienced anything like Metal Gear Solid's storyline. Twists, turns, shocks, and surprises are all through it. Sure, there is a lot of watching, but it's worth it in my humble opinion.

For those of you who for some reason are unaware, Metal Gear Solid is about a "hero" named Solid Snake. He is sent in (despite retirement) to rescue two people from a nuclear disposal facility on an island called Shadow Moses. The place is under control by the group Snake used to work for, FOXHOUND. Leading this rag-tag bunch of freaks is Liquid Snake, a man with the exact same face as Solid.

But Liquid is not alone. Psycho Mantis is one of the game's most intriguing bosses. He is a telekenetic with a love for throwing furniture with his mind. The battle with him actually requires you to change your controller to another port so he can't dodge your bullets. Sniper Wolf is a beautiful but deadly assassin who's target becomes her obsession once she marks it. Vulcan Raven is a giant Shaman who loves heavy weaponry and can survive freezing temperatures with no problem. And then, there is Revolver. Good old Ocelot makes sure to cause you all kinds of trouble throughout the course of the game, including torturing you with electro-shock! And how could I forget Ninja? Although this mysterious villain is not with Liquid, he seems determined to slice and dice you! Oh yeah, and Decoy Octopus. But you won't know much about him until it's too late.

But you aren't alone. There are two people who are physcially there for you. One is Meryl, a red-headed babe who just so happens to be your colonel's neice. Then there is Hal Emmerich, also known as Otacon. This geeky hacker gets you out of a ton of sticky situations in this game. Even though they aren't actually there, the people you contact by Codec help you out bunches. The colonel, despite being quite shady, gives you a plethora of tips to get you out of bad spots. Mei Ling, a cute little Chinese girl, saves your game and fills your mind with interesting proverbs. "Master" McMiller is an interesting old friends of Snake's who knows a lot of about the Alaskan wildlife and wilderness. Then there is Deepthroat. This guy is quite mysterious, but very helpful. Oh, and Naomi. This sexy and sophisticated scientist is the reason for the technology that is keeping you warm in the cold climate of Alaska.

The things I've mentioned don't even scratch the surface of MGS's story, characters, and twists. Don't trust anybody. That is my best advice.

Gameplay? Amazing. You'll get use to the layout of the controls very quickly. Soon, you'll be quick reloding and popping around corners like a pro. You can shimmy walls, knock on them to distract guards, come up behind a guard and choke them until they pass out or just snap their neck. What about A.I? It isn't terrible. On Easy it's a joke. However the guards can see your footprints in the snow, and track you. They can also hear your footsteps on certain kind of terrain, and when they group up it can be scary.

It can make you laugh, cry, or piss your pants. Listen to naysayers if you please, but listen to me more! You cannot go wrong with Metal Gear Solid, unless you aren't an action gamer. It has lots of cinematics, old school graphics, and some cheesy dialouge...but those faults don't overshadow the amazing characters, storyline, and gameplay. The game is super cheap used now...so go buy it. Thank you for reading this also.

Awesome soundtrack for an awesome game

This is probably my all-time favorite game at this point, and as I've had it over a year now, and I've been playing video games since "Pac-Man" was a major hit... I can say it's pretty good!

Pluses are being able to sneak around to avoid combat (unlike a lot of games where the enemies run right at you when you enter a scene), cool weapons, an awesome story-line and a soundtrack that is beyond cool (listen to the intro and ending song).

Okay, if you've played the old 8-bit Nintendo games of Metal Gear, you are going to remember "Solid Snake", as he battled the forces of Outer Heaven. Now, the graphics have improved and so the game has a real "feel" to it, and you're silenced pistol is your best friend. There are two secret items in the game. One is an unlimited ammo bandana, and the other, a stealth suit. And if you beat it twice on the same save... something else happens (think James Bond).

Can't say enough good things about this one!

"Uh-oh! The truck have started to move!" Ha ha ha ha ha!

"I feel asleep! " "Metal Gear Solid" is yet another one of the PlayStation's greatest games. The name of the game is stealth, and survival. Playing the game, you can find that there is alot of action, with plenty of weapons. The story is interesting, and once again, it carries some plot twists and tension. Why did I give it four stars, and not five? Well, the minuses in this game are that some of the dialogue can really annoy the hell out of you. (About 89% of the time, when someone tells Solid Snake something, he'll usually repeat the sentence and add "Huh".) What also makes some the game somewhat frustrating is that your colleagues call you to give you the simplest instructions even if you've figured it out. This game has no FMV (which is not too much of a minus, but it would have been nice), and also: (WARNING: SPOILER!)when you contact Master Miller (who's actually Liquid Snake) in front of Liquid Snake, he's actually there! Does that make sense, or what? And I don't think Liquid Snake can don the sunglasses and make the ponytail without Snake seeing. Well, off that topic, This game has a lot of family issues. Oh, and the music's not bad. The sound is great, and what's somewhat amazing is that when you lean against a wall or shift into First-Person mode, the sound decreases or increases, depending on how far the enemy is near you. I hope you enjoy the game, and try not to get caught by some stupid, half-witted soldier. Oh, and this "review" was not meant to be helpful at all, so vote No, that this review wasn't helpful! I just like sharing my opinions with others. :-P

Doesn't live up to the hype

I got this game because it was supposed to be the best game ever. It's not. The main flaw is the overhead perspective. The overhead camera angle limits your view of the surroundings to a huge degree. You end up relying on a radar in the upper corner of the screen to navigate the levels. This is simply wrong. If I am supposed to be the character, then I should be able to see what the character sees. The game does allow you to go into 1st person view, but you can't do anything other than look around--not even move. This control system is far too limiting, especially when much of the game is sneaking around, which requires you to really see your surroundings. The aiming system is dumb too: you hold down the fire button to aim, then release the button to fire. This means there is no way to aim and then not shoot, and no way to hold onto a target between shots. I also tired of the interuptions in game play by all the cut scenes and radio conversation with home base. Get Syphon Filter instead-not as in depth or graphically detailed, but way better game play.
