Metal Gear Solid is simply more than a way to pass the time. It's an epic game with more depth than the Atlantic ocean. While most spy games center on sneaking around and doing whatever, Metal Gear takes you into many different aspects of life. It ponders the meaning of life, why people behave how they do sometimes, it even reflects on genes and stuff like that. The numerous twists in the plot are more than enough to keep you coming back. The more you progress in the game, the less it becomes a mission for stopping the nuclear warhead and more of a necessity to stop the evil that is running this all.
My parents even liked watching me play this game, they called it an "interactive movie" because there was so much dialog and cutscenes tied into the gameplay. The unique thing about it is that it doesn't hinder the gameplay. The movies and dialog appear at appropriate times, sometimes even unexpectedly, but nothing that makes you want to shut it off or turn the volume down. Superb voice acting really enhaces this gameplay probably more than anything. You learn so much about the characters and their feeling and their history/past simply through their dialog. The only other game I've played that you go into such detail of the characters' past is the masterpiece Final Fantasy VII.
This game is worth it. The hours you spend playing this will not only entertain and amaze you, it will actually make you think. Definately worth the purchase.

I remember when i first got Metal Gear Solid, Xmas 1998 and i began to play it. I didn't get very far because i played it like the traditional action game, walk in and try to take everyone out. So i put the game in the case and didn't end up playing it till the year after. After i realized the Tomb Raider franchise was dying i decided to give Metal Gear a try yet again. This time i was presented with the most memorable and revolutionary game i've ever played. In my opinion Metal Gear Solid is the best game ever only to be rivaled by that of FFVII and Sega's Shenmue. It had the perfect blend of action, storyline, gameplay and graphics. Those people who say there was too much storyline try playing Metal Gear Solid VR Missions, the storyline is absent and see what MGS would be without the storyline. The storyline is the best storyline outside of the RPG realm, and the characters make it worthwhile as well. With characters like everyone's favorite bad @$$ Solid Snake, Revolver Ocelot, the enigmatic Ninja, and Liquid Snake, it's hard for one not to be emmersed in the MGS story. As for replay value this game's got it. Beat it once, you get one ending then you have to get the second ending. And even after you've unlocked everything you still want to play it over and over because it's so fun. The graphics, although over 2 years old, are still among the best the PSX can muster. The sound is dead on from the gunshots to the voice acting and to almost gothic exploration music, to the adrenaline pumping theme when Snake is in a tough situation. Metal Gear Solid also has so many unique situations. For example, taking on a helicopter on foot, or a walking nuclear tank on foot, surviving torture, or rappelling down the side of a building, these are just a few of the exciting situations in MGS. And as for those people who complain about not enough gameplay, they will still have to admit that the gameplay is probably the most innovative anywhere except for maybe Shenmue. I still play Metal Gear Solid, and i guarantee if you shelled out the 20 bucks for it, you'd do the same. MGS is the best game so far, and can and will only be dethroned by it's own sequel Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty on PS2 in October 2001. Years from now people will still remember the revolutionary game called Metal Gear Solid.

Too this day I have never found a greater game than MGS from the first time I played it in 98 nothing can top it and I dont think anything will. Its rare that this game had sucha movie like quality and I think thats why I love it so much. They dont make games like this anymore the sequels were nothing compared to this(although I Enjoyed them). Besides all the action in the game I think its the cutscenes that will get you. Playing the game now I get a more classic feel to it, but its Hard to believe this game was made 8 years ago and still holds up the same from the first time you go through it. There are alternate endings but I only like the original one, and there are plenty of other stuff you can unlock or find but thats just for when youve played the game 1,000,000 times and you probabaly will and you probably wont ever get sick of it.
How good can it get?

There has never been a game this good! There is a touch of everything from roleplaying to strategy-development, to straight out shoot'em up! If there is any complaints it is that The game is over way too fast (a day) and that there will be no way to top this game with a sequel (VR Missions is an addition to it and not of the same variety)

I originally rented this game, not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. This game is as close to flawless as I've seen in action or RPG's. The graphics are outstanding and the missions are clear-cut and while challenging, they are not impossible. There is nothing worse than a game that is so difficult, you end up throwing your controller down in disgust. The character voice acting is top-notch, unlike most games that are available (like the Resident Evil Series) and you will find yourself sucked in almost immediately. While the plot/storyline of the game is not exactly original, the game is so exceptional that you won't even notice. The controls are simple to use and its not just a shoot-everyone-in-sight kind of game, you have to use stealth and agility to solve alot of the missions. I highly recommend this game to anyone that enjoys action/RPG games. This one's a keeper.
One of the best...

Metal Gear Solid is one of, if not the best game I have ever played. You can't find anything wrong with it. Everything is perfect. You can tell Konami spent a long time with every possible detail. Now, the story: You are Snake, a elite soldier. (Pretty basic.) You have been sent to a Nuclear Weopons Disposel Facility that has been taken over by terrorists. If their demands are not met, they will lanch a nuke.(Bacic as well. But what MGS does is plays this plot out perfectly) Your mission is to find out if the terrorists have nuclear launch capability. And if they do, stop them. There are also two hostages you must rescue. You carry a walkie talkie-type thing called a codec. With this, you can keep in touch with a vast number of characters. As you progress through the game, you battle cool bosses and find out everything is not what it appears to be. Prepare to be decieved and betrayed. The game contains many subplots giving you a "movie-like" feel to the game. Now for statistics (out of ten).Graphics: 9 overall very good, but just a few glitches like arms not entirely attaching to sholders.Sound: 10 the game's strongest point. Everything from footsteps to dialoge is excellent. Beautiful music rounds out this category. Control: 9.5 Everything in this game is easy accessable and simple to find. Aiming is excellent and items such as binoculars are easy to use. Enjoyability: 10 Through this entire game your heart will be pounding just to see what happens next. Not just an action game, Metal Gear Solid is truly the best Playstation has to offer.

The release of this game in 1998 influnced a lot of game developers that Stealth is more important than using brute force when facing lots of enemies.
Before this game was released, there was no game that was like it but Thanks to Mr. Kojima-san ressurecting Solid Snake to the Playstation, using it's 3D capabilities compared to the old 2D version of the previous games, the legendary mercenary lives again!
The Voice acting on the game are top-notch and gives realism to the situation which the REmake "Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes" lacks.
The music suits every situation that you are in while playing the game and keeps you interested.

This is quite simply the greatest game ever! If you haven't got the game I will organise some men in white coats to come knocking at your door. The graphics are superb! They knock out Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy 7 in one shot. The sound is fantastic. It is voice animated brilliantly and you really fell like it is real! The real thing I admired about this game however, was the storyline. It was complicated and slightly unrealistic but it makes you go through a series of emotions. You start the game as Solid Snake who is trying to stop a terrorist group called Fox Hound from destroying the world with an awesome nucleur weapon called Metal Gear. Fox Hound is led by Liquid Snake who turns out to be Solid Snake's evil brother. Solid Snake is attacked by thousands of genome soldiers who have been hypnotised into following orders by a psychic member of Fox Hound called Psycho Mantis. In the game, Solid has to fight ten bosses which include Psycho Mantis, Revolver Ocelot (good as his name) and the massive structure of Metal Gear controlled by Liquid Snake himself.Snake also meets a girl who he sort of falls in love with. Unfortunately she gets shot and Snake is devestated. At one point you get tortured. If you resist it then you save the girl. If you pull out then the girl dies. Metal Gear Solid is a thrilling game which should not be judged by it's demo which is not really as good as the rest. I reccommend this game to any age group above ten years old!

That is what this game is like. Every boss you kill has a story that brings a tear to your heart. It's like in a movie when the phsyco is fataly wounded(IN THIS GAME IT TAKES 50 CLIPS TO GET THEM THAT WAY) they start talking about how their parents abused them, something like that. Cool game play(A NINJA ESC FEEL TO IT NOT KILLING BUT SNEAKING.). Neat sound when enemies are alerted to your presence. I am 17 and VR Missions is under the christmas tree and I can't wait!
Best playstation game that will ever be made

This game is unbelievably appealing. You use stealth to infiltrate an enemy base so you can stop the bad guys from launching a nuclear missile from a secret weapon called Metal Gear. Along the way you fight a variety of bosses in many different invironments from a snowy field to a dark basement. The Graphics are very good and gameplay is excellent. When you start playing this game you won't want to stop until you have beaten it. Metal Gear keeps you on the edge of you seat with its great story line, cut scenes and thrilling combat. If you don't have it, you're missing a totally different action shooter. This game is a MUST BUY.
