Hideo Kojima's highly anticipated "Metal Gear Solid" never ceases to amaze me whenever I play it. If you appreciate gaming, it's story will intrigue you(though some parts are a bit over-melodramatic and, at times, comical), it's gameplay will astound you, and the graphics will leave you gasping. Might I add that Metal Gear Solid has some of the best acting for any game I've played. The acting is amazing, HANDS DOWN! Though the game may be a bit short for hardcore RPGers, the cinematics and dialogues sections are long enough to keep you entertained for the time being. I reccomend it for any adventure fan.

This game is so cool. The graphics are awesome, the story is well written, the characters are believable and realistic, and the fighting rules! I love stealth games, because you have to use your head instead of your machine gun. This game has many cool puzzles you have to figure out, some are very tough though, but after time you'll figure out what to do. What I really love about this game is how you can use your stealth and ability to manipulate the gaurds to help you through your mission. You can fake out the gaurds in many ways, I wont tell you how, because that would spoil the fun, but this game is so realistic, you can almost do anything to help you through your mission. I'm telling you to get this game because it is just so much fun. Its my most favorite game of all time(Metal Gear Solid 2 not out yet). I highly recommend you pick this one up, and since its a GREATEST HITS, it is now very cheap!
The best game I've ever played.

If you own a Playstation, this game is a must-have.
I won't bother with a plot synopsis, since that's available elsewhere, but I will make some comments on the game itself:
The graphics of the game were the first thing that impressed me. They're very realistic. The cut-scenes are woven seamlessly into the game. The graphics may not be as "realistic" as the "Final Fantasy" games for PS, but for some reason, they worked better for me.
The controls are very easy to get used to. After 5 or 10 minutes, you'll be perfectly comfortable doing anything that needs to be done to advance in the game. The VR training session is a nice touch, since it helps get used to the gameplay and helps the player learn what is required to succeed in the game itself.
The plot is one on the best I've ever encountered. It's very easy to become immersed in this game and find out that several hours have passed without you realizing it. I know, 'cause it happened several times to me. This game has a movie-quality storyline. Come to think of it, it's probably better than some movies I've encountered lately.
The replayability (for lack of a better word) factor is also good. The strategy guide I have lists the different code names you get at the end of the game, so you can keep playing, trying to get better code names. There are also other little bennies you can get after beating the game so many times: you get a certain item (I won't spoil it for you) if you beat the game with Meryl, and a different item if you beat it with Emmerich. If you've beaten it with both, then you get both items and Snake wears a different outfit (again, I won't say what) during your next game.
This game will be able to be played on the upcoming Playstation2, so there's no excuse not to go out and buy a copy right now!

Ok, well, if you don't listen to direction like most people, you're still reading this.. So now you probably want me to tell you what's so good about this game. Well here goes. First is what everyone else says. Most every game reviewing website and magazine say this is the best game at least for playstation, if not ever. Why? Well first, is the computer intelligence. If you make a noise, badguys will investigate it, and if you dont hide quick enough, they'll kill you if you dont kill them first. IF you leave footprints in the snow, or are seen by a security camera, swarms of badguys will chase you. While this may sound boring, and yyou think all you do is hide, well you're wrong. There are tons of opportunities to kill hordes of enemy soldiers, not to mention some of the baddest badguys ever, such as a giant rambo-looking guy, except MUCH bigger, and he carries a plane engine. And for all those people that don't like mindless shoot-em-ups, well there's a really cool, deep, and twisty storyline, almost as good as one from the final fantays games. So while most reviews end with "if you liked blah, then buy blah", this review ends with "I dont care who you are, but buy this game if you own a PC or Playstation.
The one that started it all!

Oh yeah, MSG was one of the must have PS games of the late 90s. MGS had the type sophisticated plot, drama, and strong characterization you could only find in quality films. Extremely intense action and storyline filled with plot twists, double crosses, gut wrenching violence, cool weaponry, and bits of not-so-obvious campy humor, this was the ultimate espionage mission game, and it set the tone and standard for all other such games since. The beautifully detailed and distinctive looking backgrounds had such an incredible 3d photo realism and depth to them, you feel you are actually there. The characters' ability to fully interact with the environment further added to the nail biting realism of the game (like the ability to tap on walls to get a guard's attention, seeing characters' breath in the cold, leaving footprints in the snow). Your enemies almost seem to be able to think (they even yawn and go to the bathroom!). Now that's really amazing, far better than those typically mindless opponents you faced in other video games! The game playing with all the different controls get some getting used to, but once you get past that stage, you'll be fine. My only complaint about this game is that during the animated story sequences, the CGIs looked crude and not as refined and smooth as many of the other CGIs that were available even then. I found that to be a bit odd, though they have since corrected that on the new MGS 2: SOL. Overall, MGS is da bomb!!!!
The best Playstation and espinoge game to date

I had never heard of this game until I purchased a copy of Zone of Enders for the PS2. And after doing some reading about the game on the internet and playing the Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty demo, I decided to check out the PS1 Metal Gear game. To simply put it, this game is the best game I have played to date. I found this game to be much better than Oni for the PS2 in fact. The puzzle and bosses on this game were very different and possessed depth of character. Some parts of the game were frustrating particularly fighting Metal Gear Rex at the end of th game, also the torture scene was pretty hard too. But I can't wait to see Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty come out this year. I know it will be one of the best and highest selling games of all time regardless of the videogame platform. This is definitely an innovative and original game that sets new standards for others of this type. Buy it and you will see what I am talking about.

This game is the best game in all eternity. I don't care how good you think final fantasy or goldeneye is, because you're wrong. Metal Gear solid is better than them. Solid Snake could beat james bond or some nobody character in final fantasy any day. This game has everything. This game's story line is better than some movies. It is dramatic and has good, developed characters, good action, good plots and subplots. And it is so understandable. This game's script is so good that this game alone influenced me a whole lot to become a screenwriter. Hideo Kojima (director) and whoever wrote this game are the Leonardo DeVinci's of video games. I dream all the time of this becoming a movie.
Pros: Good story line Good gameplay Good graphics Good sound Good directing
Cons: What are you on?!
Buy this game if you have to sell your computer to do it, because I'd rather have Metal Gear (which I'm not allowed to have because of the rating) than what I'm comparing to it. The internet is a grain of sand to the asteroid in armageddon compared to metal Gear. Take my advice and thank me someday.

Instead of all these ones from newbie gamers who are fixed on graphics? Alright. Instead of calling this the best PlayStation game of all time, or even more laughable, one of the best games of all time, or even sadder, the best game of all time, let's get a couple of things straight first, shall we? While not bad, Metal Gear Solid left me wanting more and getting less than you'd think. Hideo Kojima set out to make one thing: a movie-like experience game. On that level, Hideo created an unrivalled masterpiece that has few equals in the action and story category of movies... but that's just it: movie; we're supposed to be playing a game here, not watching a movie. And on that level, while Hideo didn't fail, he didn't succeed either... You play Solid Snake, an ex-Fox-Hound, just out of retirement, cold, 30-something, living legend whose whole life seems to circle around the battlefield. Your mission is to infiltrate a nuclear weapons disposal facility in Alaska being ran by terrorists Fox-Hound, and rescue hostages DARPA chief Donald Anderson and the president of Armstech, Kenneth Baker. On top of that, you are to find out if Fox-Hound really has the capability of launching a nuclear attack like they've threatened, and stop them if they do. This is one job you wouldn't want to take for all the copies of Radiant Silvergun in the world. The controls are fairly simple, nicely responsive, and easy to pick. The music ranges from the typical stuff you'd expect to hear to an action game, to some beautiful, almost opera-like vocal performances that are dark and astonishing. The sound is also well done, and very detailed. You (and your enemy) can hear everything: from footsteps, to tapping on the wall, to gunshots that you'd swear were the really thing, even the most jaded would be impressed here (hey... stop looking at me!). Speaking of the enemy, the AI to the game, while not all that intelligent at times (walking a course? Come on), is very interesting. They pick up on footsteps, gunshots, knocks on the wall, and even good ol' David's... I mean, Solid Snake's cold--impressive. The characters are lively and very real. I loved all the characters minus Otacon and Meryl; Otacon who I was hoping would "accidentally" get shot, and Meryl who, well, just felt out of place. The rest though, were amazing. Personal favorites were Sniper Wolf and Vulcan Raven who are, hands down, two of the coolest bad guys ever. There are also some cool bonus stuff to do, like the VR missions and taking pictures. You can also talk to your friends (that word being used loosely...) through Codec, which is like an ultra high-tech walkie-talkie. Occasionally the voice actors sound out of place ("Japanese animes"? Hello!), but that's very rarely, and the rest of the time they manage to not only avoid the trap of the Resident Evil trend, but do so with grace. Then, there's the problems of this game... The small ones would be the over-head camera, which gets annoying quickly. There are times when I'd miss an enemy, who was five feet away from me, all because the camera wouldn't give me a good view. No big. Then, there's the length of the game--it's EXTREMELY short. Scenario: I buy the so-called "best game ever" for ... (that's what it cost when it came out, mind you). I play game and enjoy the gameplay I do find. Metal Gear Solid is beaten in less than a day. Argh! I think you get the point... Not a major, major problem, but enough to deduct a star. But the worst problem is the story itself. Sure, it's impressive, and one of the best stories of all time (forget game of the year, call it movie of the year), but as Hideo himself said, combining a movie and a game is like combining water and oil--they just don't mix. Meryl and Snake's relationship "mature"? Please. By video game standards, yes. I suppose Squall's and Rinoa's was, too (I still shudder at the mere mention of those two Dawson's Creek stars...). But by the real world standards, it seems like cheesy puppy love that quickly becomes hard to swallow. That's not the problem, the problem is this: the story takes up WAY too much time of the game. And that's where everyone who's giving this a top-notch, perfect, five star rating (which seems to be everyone from Amazon reviewers to NextGen to your own ma and pa) gets confused--Metal Gear Solid is supposed to be a game, not a movie. As a movie, it's a masterpiece of epic proportions that can rival even T2. As a game, it's only fun for the few hours it actually lasts--or should I say, the hours where you're trying to stay awake through all the Codec talking. Sure, sure, you can argue that Xenogears was the same way, but A. Xenogears had a groundbreaking story, that just so happens to be the best story of all time, and B. I actually got more gameplay time out of the short and heavily texted second disk of Xenogears than I did the entire two disks of Metal Gear Solid. It gets sad when you're spending minutes upon minutes hearing about Snake talk about how he has no family when you're supposed to actually be playing the game. And while the gameplay that is here is fantastic, it's too-good story is not so surprisingly its own downfall. Just an idea, but wouldn't it be fun if we, I dunno, say, actually played a game, not a movie? Great idea, huh? Afterall, that's what this is supposed to be: a video game, not a movie....
BEST GAME EVER!
