Wow. the first words to come out of my mouth after witnesing the intro of the game, but quickly i discovered the complete 180 that is Legend of Mana. Seeing as Secret of Mana is the sole reason of why i am into videogames in the first place, i had high expectations for this mediocre game. the first thing i noticed is that there is absolutly no plot whatsoever, the main character might as well be a moving carrot as compaired to the wonderful and humorous supporting characters. The three player option that was the life of mana was thrown out because of the limited processing power of the PlayStation, but trying to compensate for the loss the third character here is a pokemon esque monster or a machine in which you design. Though able to forgive Square for the lack of a third player, i cannot forgive them for the lack of mentioning anything about Mana ( hence the name ) except in the intro and again VERY late in the game.

Though colorful and creative, this game left me angry and annoyed.

THIS IS A GREAT GAME.!

I HAVE PLAYED PRETTY MUCH EVERY RPG, ONE EVERY SYSTEM. AND I HAVE TO SAY THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I HAVE EVER PLAYED. I CAN'T BELIEVE SOME .... WOULD GIVE THIS GAME SUCH LOW REVIEWS. I MEAN COME ON WHAT OTHER GAME CAN YOU SMITH YOUR OWN WEAPONS,MAKE YOUR OWN ITEMS,RAISE MONSTERS FOR PETS, AND CREATE THE WORLD IN YOUR OWN WAY(USING ARTIFACTS).THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST ORGINAL GAMES TO BE RELEASED IN A LONG TIME. I LOVE IT! AND I THINK YOU WILL TOO.

OOOK, ive been waiting for this game to come out for a long time, thinkin yeah, secret of mana was awesome, so legend of mana is gonna be twice as good. WRONG. For one the game has no story line what so ever, and u really don't get involved in even your own character. Its just a bunch of pointless five minute adventures that lead to no where. You also have noo freedom of movement in the field world at all, its from one place to the next, no fighting. I'm sure all of your remember when your weapons get upgraded...well nope not in this game, which was one of my favorite options. Really i guess its the story line im disappointed in, i guess the first just won't be beat. I did have to give it two stars though because it gets kinda cool near the end when you get to do cool things with your "town". Overall id say that you'd be more satisfied with Superman64 or going to see Battlefield Earth.

Square has crossed the line this time!

Well, I don' think i have EVER had such a dissapointment in my entire game-playing life! I am a gamer who has played EVERY rpg on EVERY system, and i must say that this is about the worst of the worst! Where do I start? With the non existant storyline or the sloppy framerate and poor artwork? I think this was better left in Japan so at least I would still have some respect for the Mana series.

addicting

this game is addicting and fun, but i gave it 4 overall stars because it gets boring quick. especially the first missions. but it passes the time and it really is a fun game to play anytime.
...
the musics really pretty and cool too...

Hate nonlinear plots... hate em hate em hate em (unless they're done right)

Despite all that, there is a right way to do them, as well as the wrong way, which they just did. If you want a plot that works, make every action depending upon your specific reaction have roughly ten possible outcomes, but then merge them later weave 20 or 30 separate plots depending on what you have done, and that can suddenly shift if you do something really odd, and make the story alter entirely. Instead Legend of Mana appeared from when I played it to be nothing more than a bunch of loosely strung together garbage- go to a town, solve the puzzle, hear a bunch of drivel that doesn't add up to anything else in your head, get the item and build a new town. The only thing that was recurring was that the faerie princess kept losing her way from what I played, but what did that have to do with anything.

This is an example of a good nonlinear plot:

You are a child in a town that gets destroyed by an evil overlord. The survivors worship you as the hero and fully expect you to right wrongs and destroy the overlord (base plot). Now as you set out, you're swinging your sword about like a fool and you kill a cat by accident. You get arrested for animal cruelty, and put in prison. So then in prison you meet a rogue girl who sets you free, and she tell you that the overlord is small potatoes, that the real problem is this organization that is supposed to be the law but is imposing too harse penalties on minor offenses, so under her tutelage, you become a career criminal. OR you continue on your way and the overlord send an assassin to poison your drink, but she has a change of heart and drug it instead. You get sent as a slave to be a gladiator, but you fight well and impress the army and instead fight in a war. OR you continue unswayed and finally reach the overlord's castle only it seems the townspeople were lying, the guy is really a paladin who saw extreme corruption in the town, and put an end to it, and he has proof. So you march right back tothe town and see that he was right.

This is nonlinear plotline, the plot can make any twist imaginable throughout the game, even sacricing the original antagonize or even the hero. Assume the hero died in the thief story, the plot might now revolve around the rogue girl, and her adventures.

A Good Game, BUT....

Having played through "The Secret of Mana" for the Super Nintendo, I really hoped this Playstation sequel would be even better than its excellent predecessor.
In terms of music, graphics, and pure high-magical fantasy immersion, The Legend of Mana is a definite step up. The entire world is literally rebuilt through the discovery of artifacts, which the player may place on a world map. After an often cute and amusing animation sequence, a new location springs up where the artifact is placed. There are an incredible number of special fighting skills to develop with a wide variety of weapons, many of which the character can build and/or customize in his or her own workshop. Armor and even robotic sidekicks may be built in the workshop, as well as musical instruments which allow the character to use magical attacks. Also, the character can raise monsters to use as sidekicks while exploring dangerous locales. In theory, this should be more role-playing fun than a human being should be allowed to have.
In reality, it just ain't. When enemies are encountered, your normally nimble character draws his or her weapon and becomes mysteriously sluggish-even with the lighter weapons. Even so, few battles will prove to be particularly challenging. Building items and raising monsters will be an incredibly time-consuming process of trial and error, which is only partially mitigated if you break down and purchase a strategy guide. Building the most useful items requires a lot of spirit coins, obtained by the boring activity of luring elemental spirits close enough to panhandle them by trying to cater to their peculiar musical interests. The monster-ranching aspect wasn't too bad, although it wasn't particularly useful in the context of the rest of the game. In fact, most of the extra features were neither necessary nor particulary worthwhile.
In short, I loved the graphics, the music, and the variety of things to find and use, but found that the "fun factor" of the first game had been reduced through a clunkier combat system. The "non-linear" aspect of the game is as much a liability as it is an asset; objectives may be obfuscated until obscure conditions are triggered.
You might well enjoy this game as I did for a while, but let the buyer beware-Pretty music and artwork combined with a gazillion options is no substitute for just plain fun!

This game was odd at best, and really not completely worth the time it took to complete. I expected more from Square, at least they redeemed themselves with Final Fantasy IX.
