This game was pretty kewl at first, but it gets anoying after a while. Secrate of manna, the first one, as WAY better. The game is pretty mushy. It's like reading lots of different childrens books. The game ends pretty easy, and fighting bad guys is no big deal. It has no main plot. You just go around helping people like a boy scout or sumthing. You can do the game over and over. The only way to do ALL the challanges is to buy the guide book.
Different but still fun

I couldn't wait to play this game since I first heard that I would be released here in the US. I own Secret of Mana and hoped for more of the same. Legend of Mana is different from Secret of Mana in several respects, but it is still a fun game. The world must be created from artifacrs that are won from different quests. There are many quests in the game; some are long while others are quite short, such as when you learn how to forge your own weapons. The battle system is different, too, but it is not difficult to overcome the differences. Magic is now summoned by creating musical instruments and setting it to one of the controller buttons. Special skills are learned during battles and can also be set to the controller buttons. Which skills are learned depends on how you are equipped. The graphics are great considering that the characters are 2D sprites. The backgrounds have bright and vibrant colors, which adds to the enjoyment of the game. If you liked Secret of Mana, give this game a chance. After playing a while, Legend of Mana will start to grow on you.
This is not your Father's Secret of Mana...

First, I have to say I loved Secret of Mana (and most other Squaresoft RPG's). This one, however, has nothing to do with Secret of Mana in any real way. It doesn't even really have a plot. Rather, you run around and solve a lot of little sub-plots with little story of their own and all seem way to easy. Some ideas are cool; you can raise your own 'pets' to go adventuring with and build Golems and some items, but its not enough. Fight sequences are simple and boring - quick blows with one button, heavy blows with another, "special techniques" (NOT all that special) can be hot-keyed with the other two. Certain abilites you learn can be added to the top buttons.
Over all, this game would probably be good for the 'under 10' set, for anyone teenage or over, forget it!

Seeing that Secret of Mana makes you jump up and down at the thought of a seqel, Legend of Mana is really not as great as people say it is. On Secret of Mana you could walk around freely and attack at anything almost anywhere. On Legend of Mana, in battles, can only attack left or right, even though you can move in all the directions. And the innovative surfaces are pointless, the way you have to wait to get an "Artifact" before you can move to the next town. And the storyline, I mean, what storyline, this game is just boring. I was so excited at fist and even fought with my brother to play it, but now it's gotten pointless to play, and there's nothing new. Trust me, don't believe those who give this game 4 or 5 stars, this game isn't worth it, no matter what company it's made by.

I'll keep this short and sweet. The graphics and music in this game are some of the best I've ever seen; on these factors, the game doesn't dissapoint in the least. Many have complained about the lack of story, but, in light of the game's extremely innovative quest system, I can forgive this flaw. Unfortunately, this game manages to dig the hole, jump in, and bury itself outright over one problem which could have been easily remedied: the game is completely devoid of challenge. You can just walk up to enemies, start hacking away at them, and keep hacking until they die. During this process, the enemy won't move an inch. And if you somehow do manage to die, you start right back over at the beginning of the fight. I beat the last boss without getting hit once. Pathetic. In the end, while this game does pack a great number of quests, secrets, and minigames, nothing you accomplish ever feels very satisfying, and the game never becomes very fun. And personally, that was the only shot needed to kill.
This game rocks

i'm not into RPG games but when i got Legend of Mana, i was instantly hooked!! it's slow at first but then things get rolling along. i eventually got the strategy guide which helped but you can do without it. i recommend this game highly especially for those who aren't RPG fans.
graphics are beautiful and the music gets really repetitive.
i love the fact that i get to have pets who help in the adventures. they're eggs at first which you will find along your adventures and you hatch them and raise them to fight with you.
Plot?! We don't need no stinking plot!

Don't expect Secret of Mana when you buy this game, actually don't expect any challenge when you buy this game. This game is just plain fun, and to make it more fun is the fact that it is two player! The graphics are all hand drawn which is just beatiful. And then there's the fact that there is absoulotly no plot. There are many, many different plots, which range from killing dragons to finding a monkey named diddle from hell! You even get to costomize your own world. This game is fun, but a little short.
Doesn't live up to the hype

For those of you who remember the original Secret of Mana, and even other games in the series such as Final Fantasy Adventure (Seiken Densetsu) and Seiken Densetsu 3, this game brings back the feel of those games with its battle system. However, a new plot system has been implemented allowing you to place your lands, affecting your quests and "mana levels", which increase or decrease the power of elemental attacks. Over the course of the game, you learn skills such as weapon and armor tempering, instrument creation, and golem animation. It is possible to create ultimate weapons and armor using these skills. However, these skills can be frustrating and time consuming, and often detract from the already somewhat slow progress of your gaming. The battle system also has its flaws. You can move in all directions just as you can in the other games- but you can only attack left and right. Bummer. All in all, this is a nice game if you want to spend lots of time experimenting tempering weapons and armor and spending endless hours pouring over what button combination to try next to find how to use that stuped Ragnarok attack and pouring over guides on how to place your lands and when to place your lands in order to get every single quest and item you possibly can. Simply: ugh.
