A big let down, specially for Secret of Mana fans............

I've always loved RPGs, and adventure/rpgs (zelda, etc.) And being the RPG freak that I am, I've always loved 98% of Square's RPGS, specially for the SNES. Secret of Mana (for SNES) was one of my favorite of all time, I mean, it had an engrossing story, multiplayer mode and many other magical features.Im such a big Secret of Mana fan, I even have Secret of Mana 3 in japanese! I waited for this game for a long long time, and when i saw pictures of it on the net, I went ballistic! I couldn't believe my eyes...My God this game features beautiful hand drawn graphics, but the characters just needed a lot more animation. The game's visuals is about everything it has going for it, below the surface lies a shallow, boring experience. The game scores such low ratings mainly because I don't think this can qualify as an adventure/RPG ,but as a mini-game quest. It doesn't have a story! Is it even legal to release a sequel to one of the best games ever, with no story! The game just takes you trough uninspired, BORING mini stories, it has no character development whatsoever, and battles are way too easy, it has terrible AI (artificial intelligence), and most battles can be won by Hit-and-run sequences. This is one of Square's worst games of the past 5 years, and it hurts me because I don't think I will ever be able to look at Secret Of Mana the way I used to. AVOID if: You're a real RPG fan, and a secret of Mana fan, or if you like your RPGS with an actual story.

Try it if: You're a begginer, and a casual RPG-er, and you like mini quests.

Beautiful graphics don't make up for boring battles

Yes, the graphics are pretty. Yes, there's a complicated weapons/armor creation system to master. BUT, who cares when the battles are so boring that it becomes painful to play the game.

Sample battle: your character, moving slow as mollases on a winter day, runs into 3-5 enemies who move slighty slower than you. "Run" up to the first, hit it a few times, kill it. Repeat with the others. Do this for 30 hours to beat the game, at which point you'll get to a harder level where the weapons/armor creation system finally comes into play.

If that sounds about as fun as slamming your hand in a car door over and over, well, you'd be right. Save your money, rent it first to see if its for you.

RPG with a twist

Legend of Mana is not your "traditional" RPG. You esentially build up a world from stratch, using aftifacts to build variuos things This style of game will not appeal to everyone, but I enjoyed having the ability to place the various Artifacts in different places. The mini-quests may seem rather pointless, but it gives you a chance to build up the character and learn some great fighting abilities a couple of the mini-quests are timed and there can be a LOT of mini-quests in a given spot <6 in the town of Domina, probably more> and after one quest is done, going back to a spot may reveal more. There does not seem to be a whole lot of cohesiveness to the game but it is a fun game.

The graphics are wonderful, but I have come to expect that from Squaresoft. Almost every time they come out with something, the graphics are almost always great. I love the sound - another thing I expect from Squaresoft is great sound.

The main character doesn't say anything which is a little annoying but the other characters have plently to say, as well as plenty of emotion.

On the whole, it is a good game, but it is different, and not everyone cares for this type of game. Rent it first, before you buy it. =)

Only Listen to the dude from Minnesota , this game is cool

Dont listen to anyone else but the dude from minnestoa and me. This game is very fun! It doesnt get old and boring like most rpg's do. It has a real-time fighting system. Fighting acually stays fun instead of becoming annoying. Take the childish atmosphere lightly, and dont let that stop you from playing a very fun game.

I think that Squaresoft's Legend of Mana is a wonderful game allowing intense battles without "Taking Turns". And I think that bringing us back the classic and yet wonderful two-dimentional art that fulfills all that art and Anime lovers like to see. This addition in the Mana Edition is a great one. Though it does need more of a storyline, it leaves you free to discover the secrets yourself; which can be very reassuring. And I love it's commical sense and GREAT translation.

An RPG fans Dream Game

Legend of Mana ranks among the best role playing games ever. It manages to be groundbreaking in style even though it is very similiar to the two previous games in the series. The game is beautiful to the point of making all other games look ugly, even Saga Frontier 2. The central storyline is solid, but it is in the side quests and stories that the game really shines. The non-linear aspects of this game let you pursue each seperate story at your choosing. Each character melds flawlessly into another as you explore this diverse and wonderful game, if you have no other RPG's to play after finishing LoM you will find yourself replaying it to no end. This game is also part of the best line-up of summer games that Squaresoft has ever made. In the Year of Squaresoft this one shines. Good Luck and Enjoy.

Okay - but not great.

I had really high hopes for this game because of its connection to Chrono Cross. However, it's REALLY different. It was fun but there was so much going on that even after completing the entire game, I still didn't have a real grasp on what I was doing. There are so many side components that are not really necessary to the game but probably fun if you understand what you're doing - making Golems and weapons and all. You create your own world map too, which is something I personally haven't seen before and is kind of a cool element. However, there is so much involved with the placement of things on the map that you can really hurt yourself overall if you don't place things correctly. I still don't understand that exactly. I don't know that I could have played this game with out the online guide - and that, for me, doesn't feel like I really played it. I like to be able to figure things out on my own. Anyway... worth playing if you aren't interested in any other games out. Definitely fun and time consuming but not the best.

Definately worth buying.

I got this game as a birthday present, and I was extremely happy that I did. It has a lot of depth to it. Starting from character creation, you first pick either boy or girl, second you choose one of (I think it's 10) 10 weapons to start with, and then choose the area of the world you want to live in. THEN you place your house somewhere in that area. Already things are interesting. The game world is shaped by the player's imagination, as you recieve artifacts containing dungeons, roads, towns, towers, forests etc. Once the artifact is used, that place appears. At the character's home, there is a garden that grows fruits and vegitables to feed the monsters at your, monster ranch, where you raise monsters to come with you and help you fight. Lastly there are workshops that allow you to create weapons/armor and musical instruments (which give you magical powers). It's actually a lot of fun. Game play and control are good too. The reason it's only 4 stars is that it has very little to do with the original secret of mana. Which is sort of a let down, other than that, a great game!

Legends are always remembered for their innovativeness

Innovative. That is the single thing I can say but I won't. LOM is one of SquareSoft's more original games, which are usually bad, that si somewhat good. You are a hero that goes around completing events while trying to awaken the Mana Tree. The game the most non-linear game I have ever seen on the Playstation. That gives it it's strong points. Some people, like my brother, don't have the time to sit and play though a RPG like Final Fantasy (pick one). He simply has no time. He plays a little and then can't pick up the controller for several months. Soon he ends up forgeting the storyline. Not with this game. It's design allows the player to start and event and finish it and then choose another and finish that. Usually you do them one at a time. Very rarely does more than one event occur at the same time unless the player causes that to happen. The battles are real-time, much like Parasite Eve 2. The charge bar has been removed allowing you to whack the enemies to your hearts content without worrying about doing only 2 damage. The music is very nice as well though it could have been better. The graphics are beautiul and will make you feel like you are playing a painting. The only problem I had started when I had no clue how to start up another event and I couldn't win yet. Like some RPGs, the second you get the Sword of Mana artifact you can win the game, because you will be strong enough. Others force you to do other things to get to the point where you can get to the final place and win. My advice, if you like an original game go ahead and get it. If you don't but want to try, rent it. This game is a good idea and executing very well.
