This game ROCKS!

Amazing. Breathtaking. Fascinating. These are 3 of about a million words I could use to describe Legend of Mana. So many hours of entertainment are provided. It has amazingly beautiful graphics, a great soundtrack, and great stories, too. And this game gives you the option of having a girl OR a boy as the main character. Now all we can ask for is a sequel.

Difficult to Play

I can't say that I liked this game. I enjoyed the original SNES game, Secret of Mana, but this one was nothing like it. The dynamic questing system is confusing and difficult to understand, and I'd totally lost the plot by the time I was an hour or two into the game.

i have been playing rpgs for most of my life and the mana series has never disappointed me. final fantasy adventure(mana 1 for gameboy), **the secret of mana**(mana 2 for snes), seiken densetsu 3(not released in the us, but i still managed to get my hands on it) are all amazing and i highly recomend them. i am positive that part 4 will become one of my all time favorite games.

Not an RPG

Why this is classified as a RPG is beyond me. It's definatly more an adventure game than anything, and a sub-par one at that. Combat is dull and quite easy, with very poor AI. Battles can easily be won by hit and run tactics, killing almost all enemies in 3-5 hits depending on your weapon. There is no real magic, rather instruments are bought and spells are set as hot keys (L1, R1) along with other abilities gained over time.

The story? There is no story. There are few minor stories, but none are related in any way and they are all rather boring and unoriginal. There is no character development at all. On top of this, what little storyline that can be obtained from playing multiple quests is childish at best. The end of the game comes on without warning and very soon (7:33 first time through), and leaves no closure (but there really isn't anything to put a close to).

The graphics are alright, but I don't like the pre-rendered backgrounds beacuse they were not pre-rendered in SOM.

All in all, a terrible waste of money. You are much better off buying Vagrant Story, believe me.

I rented it. The worst 5 bucks I ever spent.

I recently rented Legend of Mana from a local Hollywood video. If you loved Secret of Mana or Seiken Densetsu 3, you will be VERY saddened by this .................... game. I can only pray that Chrono Cross will live up to the Chrono Trigger standard, as Legend of Mana didn't stand up to its Secret of Mana standard.

A different twist

Playing Secret of Mana a while back, I was a bit anxious for this game to arrive. Although it does differ greatly from the original, it still keeps some of the basics as well as adding a new twist to the game. The very non-liner style to the game brings new challenges. The other great features of the game are it's customizability with weapons, pets and golems. They aren't required through the game, but are left for you to decided if you need or want them. The game itself is not a great RPG, like those with the status of Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy, but it is a stepping stone for those of us that need something to do between Chrono Cross and the new FF games....................

1 heck of a game

I love almost everything that squaresoft puts out. this just proves even more that they make good quality games. the way all the stories are and the storyboard backgrounds is down are fantastic. If you love rpgs and you love squaresoft this is a definate keeper. another great thing about it is that you can play 2 player with someone else saved data. How cool is that. I just went over to my friends house and played for an hour both gaining levels. The great thing about this game is that you and you friends don't have to take turns you can both play at the same time.

Must Have for Beginner or Advanced RPGers

The Legend of Mana is a must have. Its lavish hand drawn graphics add to the splendor of the story. The many focused quests and side-quests will have you playing for hours. The music puts you in the mood as you battle evil dragons and demonic wizards. The best part of the game is the fact that you deside how the story takes place. The way you react to things and how you choose to do them is all part of the game!

Very disappointing!

I loved Secret of Mana, the earlier Mana game on the Super Nintendo, and loved it -- among many other Square games. I was really happy to get my hands on this new Mana game... but I am incredibly disappointed in it!

The game has no storyline. After a neat intro, you control a very generic guy or girl character (named "YOU") that rarely speaks. You choose a spot on a blank map for your home, then place other areas of the game on joining spaces, eventually building up a big world.

Other characters in the game come and go as little "mini-quests" pop up (bookended by a cute title and little "The End" scene whenever you complete the quest). Completing the quests basically consists of walking around an area on your map and killing enemies and a boss enemy.

This brings up the battle system, which is a step back from Secret of Mana. Instead of the fast-paced gameplay of SoM, you are drawn into little battles when you near enemies. Battling mainly consists of pushing buttons quickly while near enemies. The graphics don't allow for much detail, so any sense of strategy is hopeless. You have little real control over the other characters in your team (unless you go through the trouble of setting up two-player play, which is often more hassle than it's worth).

The graphics are nice, though incredibly happy. Still, it is as if players are controlling a small part of a nice piece of animation... the animation, however, has no plot or sense of coherency. The graphics do not make up for the incredibly bad gameplay and lack of story.

Even if you were a fan of Secret of Mana or love Square's other games, do not rush out and buy Legend of Mana. Instead rent the game and, if you like what you see, then consider buying it. I am disappointed I bought the game without previewing it first. I don't think I would have wanted to see the game through after seeing its poor quality.

Dissapointing follow up to a great original

The "Secret of Mana" was truly a graphically outstanding and originally plotted take in the rpg/quest theme; so much so that I looked forward to the "Legend" worthy sucessor to what I hoped would be a series of the caliber of "Final Fantasy." But this tedious second installment lacks the visual excitement and fast moving storyline and action that maked the original exceptional. A sense of adventure is missing, and game just isn't challenging.
