We CAN Kick Butt With the Best of Them!

From the first previews I saw for Virtua Fighter 4, it looks to become a favorite of mine right up there with Tekken 2, Soul Blade and DOA2. With smooth exquisitely detailed graphics and an enhanced AI, this is supposed to be the thinking mans or womans fighting game. But there was one factor that made me know I HAVE to buy this game, and her name is Vanessa. As far as I know the first black female in any fighter game. And it's about damn time! It may come as a shock to most game developers but yes we DO play and enjoy fighting games too! And it's great to FINALLY see us represented in the games, so please keep 'em coming!

Better than Tekken 4!

Many 3D fighting games have come and few give the fighting experience that the Virtua Fighter series gives. With 13 fighters to choose from and tons of moves to do, you can never get bored. This is a game to own and one cant miss the chance!

Arguably the best fighting sim of all time, Virtua Fighter 4

The Virtua Fighter series and me always had a rocky relationship. The first game was the one that introduced me to 3-D fighting, while VF 2 was revolutionary in almost every aspect and firmly placed fighting games as my second favorite genre, second to RPG ofcourse thanks in part to the Final Fantasy series. The third Virtua Fighter game was confusing at best. Cool graphics for its time but the extremely deep fighting engine took a while to get used to. And now here we are with Virtua Fighter 4.

From what I have played at the arcade, Virtua Fighter 4 without any doubt, is the best looking 3-D fighting game ever. I thought it would be at least several months until someone could best the graphics of Dead or Alive 3 on XBox. But, man, were my predictions way off. The gameplay is still pretty deep, but surprisingly easy to get into, even easier than VF 2 in my opinion. And with the inclusion of enemy AI in the game that actually picks up your fighting style and patterns, and counter your moves with the appropriate response, this game can never be the same twice.

If your a PS2 owner who is a 3-D fighting game fan, whether a casual one or hard-core extreme, you owe it to yourself to get this game. The PS2 has been seriously lacking in this genre. But with Virtua Fighter 4 and other fighting games hot on it's heels, expecially Virtua Fighter 4, the drought is almost over.

You may be thinkiing hmmmm ill wait until tekken 4 comes out this fall, but you dont need to because this game will be better. Yu suzuki, the famed producer of hang on, space harrier, virtua fighter series, and shenmue brings you his latest installment vf4. He has converted this masterpiece to the ps2 in all of its naomi 2 graphic glory. Also added an advanced training portion, customizable characters, and unlockable bonuses. This is the best fighting game ever because the more you play the better you become unlike button mashers where even the best go down unfair. Do yourself a favor and buy this game

A longtime VF player's take...

I had a chance to play Virtua Fighter 4 at an arcade. I'm guessing the machine had a PS2 inside the cabinet because there were noticeable lines and aliasing problems on a big screen monitor. I highly doubt that Yu Suzuki would've released VF4 with graphics worse than VF3.

The lens flare effects are not terribly impressive after having played Halo or any recent game. The clothing textures seemed to be alright, but not as impressive as those of Dead or Alive 3. Kage's outfits get more convoluted for their own good with each sequel. You can see how the original characters are aging a bit now, not just a mere polygon boost.

As far as the gameplay goes, I'm sure I didn't spend enough time playing it to really develop a deep understanding of the system, but the exclusion of the evade button was a mistake in my opinion. Double taps on the controller are annoying at best except for executing moves. Holding down the evade button to run away, step sideways or flip backwards seemed like a more fluid interface. And the joystick jiggling animation really reinforces the fact that you are playing a game...it's obnoxious frankly, along with the colored spark and lighting effects with each hit.

Initially, my first impression is that VF3 has a much more elegant feel to it. Without the presence of Takaarashi, the body types are not as diverse. Jeffery seems to have gotten bigger and more bulky...I dunno, after waiting more than 4 years for this, I feel a little bit disappointed. They had never dropped any VF characters with each sequel, but then to drop one of the more interesting? Pai could've been dropped easily. Her style mimics Lau's and her character is not terribly interesting compared to Kasumi or Ayane from Dead or Alive 3...

Having played Virtua Fighter since the very first one, I looked forward to this next installment. VF 2 brought us texture mapping, VF 3 brought the addition of a fourth button (Evade) as well as uneven terrain which played a factor in damage/blocking, and 4 brings us back to level playing areas and takes away the evade button bringing us back to the familar 3 button set up. It's as if they wanted to make VF appeal more to the masses as with 3 it started to become a little too complex/hardcore.

The graphics are amazing, easily topping even the XBox's Dead or Alive 3. Those who nitpick will notice the differences between the PS2 and the arcade, however most will not even notice. They are that good. Control is spot on, music and sound effects are excellent, and the game retains it's polished feel. The animation is as fluid as ever with the characters performing moves as if they were real martial arts masters performing their moves in an exhibition. The game seems easier to play than 3, as the game was tweaked for moves being easier to do and perform. VF4 brings two new characters to the mix , Vanessa Lewis, and Lei Fei, while Takarashi is absent leaving us with 13 fighters.

Many extras abound with numerous training modes and extra costumes and accessories waiting to be unlocked. Virtua Fighter has always been in the shadow of Tekken in the US when it should be on top. Try it and see why it is the number one fighting series in Japan. This should not be missed.

Falling Short of Expectations

VF3 was an amazing leap from VF2 with reversals, the polygon count, fluid fighting motions and gameplay balance. VF4 feels like a dumbed down version of VF3, with double tap motions and jiggling joystick icons. After playing VF3 extensively for more than 3 years, mostly in the Arcade, but also on the Dreamcast, I found VF4 to be inane and graphically on par. VF3 was undoubtedly the best 3D fighting game of 95-99. VF4 will not hold this title due to a lack of innovation on the part of AM2.

To claim that Virtua Fighter 4's graphics are capable of "easily topping" Dead or Alive 3 is nonsense. Dead or Alive 3's realtime lighting effects, bump-mapped textures and smooth high resolution character models all running at a flawless 60 fps. While the buildings of VF4 are impressive, they merely serve as a backdrop for the match, no stage interaction like getting struck through walls.

The most astonishing thing is that AM2 chose the PS2 for a port of a technological showcase like Virtua Fighter 4. Hopefully Suzuki will utilize the next gen systems like the Xbox or Gamecube to make the best version of VF4.

Surely the best fighting game ever made in any console

When the Xbox was released i was really impressed in what it could do. Alot of people compare this game to Dead Or Alive 3, But in my opinion the Virtual Fighter series, has onece again taken the fighting genre into the next level. Dead Or Alive 3 had good graphics alright, but the gameplay was nothing but pressing a bunch of buttons. Virtual Fighter 4 teaches you moves so that you dont have to just press buttons faster and faster. Virtual Fighter4 is not like that, it teaches begginers to the series how to perform well, and the the advanced will be praised by performing with accuracy combos, throws reversals grabs etc.... The battle system is and so deep that you almost feel like you are taking the punch. While the old character look AMAZINGLY DETAILED(much better than DOA3). You can see the facial expretions in their faces and the detail int their clothers. I love the two new characters specially Lei Fei, who is agile and have some of the most awesome moves seen on a fighting game. Yu Suzuki has done a fatastic job on this game and i am proud to say that this is the best fighting game i have ever played(better than DOA3).

VF4 is as good as it gets

I wasn't expecting VF4 to be this good, it is just the best fighting game, gameplay wise, to date. The graphics is a step lower than Dead or Alive 3 in terms of graphics catering to PS2's hardware. There are 13 Characters to choose from but don't let that fool you, it will take time before you can master one of them. There are three main buttons, kick-punch-guard, the evade button from VF3 is gone, which makes the controls simple enough for new gamers.

So only three buttons? Another button smashing game? Good luck if you plan to button smash, this game will require skill and precision to execute some advanced combos. Every character has their "stances" and they have their own moves and combos.

The action in VF4 is faster than its predecessors, but not fast that its gonna make you frantic. Recovery from knockdowns are faster now and characters can't jump high(they almost are not used at all). All in all VF4 will satisfy casual gamers and hardcore fighting fans alike, it will satisfy your craving till Tekken 4 or Soul Calibur 2 comes out. It might even be the fighting game of the year.

Graphics 8/10
Gameplay 10/10
Sounds 8/10
Replay Value 10/10 (you'll be coming back for this!)
