Here's the thing...all these video games are ultimately complex mathematical equasions, disguised behind pretty graphics. Sadly, Virtua Fighter 4 does not do a good job of concealing that.
The graphics are pretty decent, but the game flow is stilted. The clearest example is Wolf's tackle throw, which animates as a mid-body lunge when it works, and as an ineffectual grasp of the hands if it's countered. A kick can pass through an opponent's head if they duck and punch. The system has a very blatant rock-paper-scissors system with high, middle and low attacks and defenses. Worst of all, you input your moves and they occur moments later, which totally destroys the visceral thrill so aptly delivered by Tekken or Dead Or Alive. It's very frustrating to be hammering down on the punch button while your character just stands there and gets kicked in the head.
On the upside, the 'kumite' system is really neat. If you can get past the game-play flaws, the ability to play dress up with your fighters is fun and adds some longevity to the title. Best of all, the opponents in Kumite mode all seem to have distinct patterns or styles, a welcome break from the usual fighting game where the same character fights with the same pattern and techniques every time.
If you loved the other Virtua Fighter games, then this one's not much different, and the Kumite mode is great. On the other hand, if you just want the best fighter out there (and have an XBox too), Dead or Alive 3 is still has better gameplay and graphics.

It seems the only purpose this game was created for was so the company could make more money. There is absolutely nothing new with this game. It's pretty much of the same old thing, and this game gets boring rather quick. Just skip this one, there is always hope for Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, that game looks sweet!

The highlight of Virtua Fighter 4 is the amazing training sessions...both for you (as a playing fighter), and for your AI Fighter. To truly appriciate controlling a fighter, one must learn the moves...a task that can be daunting. However, this game gives you detailed analysis of your fighting methods and while practicing individual moves you are given information as to what button you may be pressing too early, or too late...and you can visually see the buttons you are pressing so you can tell instantly if you are getting the move correct or not...and where you are failing. The training and advice are well done. So many fighting games tend to allow a certain amount of 'button mashing' to get through..this one helps encourage learning the moves..and there are more than just simple offensive type moves availiable..there are counters, reversals, throws and unique styles that make each Fighter truly separate from the rest. The A.I. Fighter you can 'train' yourself is a bonus feature that can be enjoyed in a more casual way, yet you are still involved through the fights as you 'coach' your A.I. Fighter. Throughout the fights you are rewarded with items for your fighters to don or new colors for clothes etc. Periodically you will fight a 'Ranking' fight that will elevate your status. The game looks appropriate for todays higher ended consoles, and backgrounds are lovely and lively, not static. If you seek a Fighting game where you can get more involved with your fighing techniques, have plenty of help in doing so, and in short, get to know your fighter...then Virtua Fighter 4 should be spot on!

All you ahve to do is to beat all the players ands then what????????? this game is great for the arcade, but not for a home system, the graphics are great the move and fighting style original*(subject to debate)it's really not so bad however i don't like people playing games, in my house, on my console see so play all alone, i need a game like MGS3 OR DMC3, Splinter cell, you name it i like it,even RPG's & horror survival game that can work, so i give this game three stars after a 2 weeks you forget this game it weill collect dust unless you are a child who like doing the same thing over and over beating the same people don't buy this play it the arcade or even practise at home to kick ass in the arcade.

This game is sooooo boring! The kumite mode goes on forever and you don't get anything! The characters are okay and so are the arenas, but they could be a lot better.

As i played this game it gets more and more enthrawling as you pick and choose what characters fighting styles and skills you like the most and what suits you. although it gets a little crazy when fighting the boss, you start to want to mash buttons. but other than that it is insane to try knew stuff with all the fighters.A fighting game for the ages, A must to play!

the effort put into the design and creation of this game was obviously very strong, which is why it's so dissappointing to note the myriad of problems you encounter once you get very far at all in the game. the individual characters are very impressive with highly developed controls that mimic the weapons-based Soul Calibur in the player's ability to add upon simple moves for better and better combos. each fighting style is decidedly different allowing for great replay value learning their moves.
some of the more interesting additions to this game are cool but not as capitalized upon as they could be, such as the ability to create and coach another fighter. this could have been done very well but it ends up just being a curiosity for people who have already become bored with the game.
the real problem of this game is that the tournament ranking system, where you defeat harder and harder enemies and acquire various prizes. the game manual provides no real instructions for this mode of play. you have no idea when you're playing whether there even is an end, and the way your opponents are chosen seems almost completely random.
additionally, the controls for many of the characters are extremely difficult to master, and it is hard to follow along with some of the rules of the environment, a commmon problem in older games, where the players would be constantly be left screaming "I WAS BLOCKING!" fighter games have come a far way, and it's a shame that virtua fighter hasn't overcome this frustrating visual problem.

What a difference a version makes. VF4 is awesome and provides some of the most challenging gameplay. I would have given this game a 5 star rating, but its graphics aren't quite up to par with some of the other fighters such as Tekken Tag. FIGHT!
Two attack buttons and a RPG-like mode don't fool me!

This game is not what the gaming world has promoted it to be.
As I've peeled myself from more innovative games and finally given Tekken 4 a chance, I realize how much more fun and interesting it is than Virtua Fighter 4. The fun lasts much longer as well.
The most frustrating aspect of this game is its difficulty in the "Kumite" mode. Yes, you can get nifty (usually useless) items, but once you reach a certain point (the fights are seemingly endless) it's like hitting a brick wall!
Virtua Fighter has always been plagued with a certain annoyance named Akira. He's the big bad boss-man whose moves can only be performed with useful speed by the computer. And by "useful" I mean ridiculous.
I was fooled by the customization mode for a while, but got sick of my memory being guzzled and the computer stealing my glory over two, just two attack buttons.
