the effort put into the design and creation of this game was obviously very strong, which is why it's so dissappointing to note the myriad of problems you encounter once you get very far at all in the game. the individual characters are very impressive with highly developed controls that mimic the weapons-based Soul Calibur in the player's ability to add upon simple moves for better and better combos. each fighting style is decidedly different allowing for great replay value learning their moves.
some of the more interesting additions to this game are cool but not as capitalized upon as they could be, such as the ability to create and coach another fighter. this could have been done very well but it ends up just being a curiosity for people who have already become bored with the game.
the real problem of this game is that the tournament ranking system, where you defeat harder and harder enemies and acquire various prizes. the game manual provides no real instructions for this mode of play. you have no idea when you're playing whether there even is an end, and the way your opponents are chosen seems almost completely random.
additionally, the controls for many of the characters are extremely difficult to master, and it is hard to follow along with some of the rules of the environment, a commmon problem in older games, where the players would be constantly be left screaming "I WAS BLOCKING!" fighter games have come a far way, and it's a shame that virtua fighter hasn't overcome this frustrating visual problem.

What a difference a version makes. VF4 is awesome and provides some of the most challenging gameplay. I would have given this game a 5 star rating, but its graphics aren't quite up to par with some of the other fighters such as Tekken Tag. FIGHT!

Two attack buttons and a RPG-like mode don't fool me!

This game is not what the gaming world has promoted it to be.
As I've peeled myself from more innovative games and finally given Tekken 4 a chance, I realize how much more fun and interesting it is than Virtua Fighter 4. The fun lasts much longer as well.
The most frustrating aspect of this game is its difficulty in the "Kumite" mode. Yes, you can get nifty (usually useless) items, but once you reach a certain point (the fights are seemingly endless) it's like hitting a brick wall!

Virtua Fighter has always been plagued with a certain annoyance named Akira. He's the big bad boss-man whose moves can only be performed with useful speed by the computer. And by "useful" I mean ridiculous.
I was fooled by the customization mode for a while, but got sick of my memory being guzzled and the computer stealing my glory over two, just two attack buttons.

Good but.....

First off I have enjoyed playing this game, but I've owned it for one day and have already beaten the game with half of the fighters! I disagree with other reviews here in the depth of the game play. Like the previous versions of this game if you just punch constantly you'll win. As far as I can tell no hidden characters. Still, great graphics and it has been fun just not great. Buy Dead Or Alive 2 or Tekken Tag, much better.

this game is awsome. the graphics are cool, and the fighting is so real. i love it. if your trying to decide wheather you want this or not this game is easily the right choice. with 13 cool characters and millions of moves this game never gets to boring.
It rocks!!!!

Best Fighter Yet

VF 4 is a super fighter, and I'd say that it's the best fighter out yet. AM2 did a fantastic job retaining the deep gameplay with the simple 3 button control scheme. The graphics are bar none the best of any fighter out on the PS2 and anyone familiar with fighting games will recognize this as probably the best playing game period so far this year.

Not bad at all !

It's actually a pretty good kick'em and throw'em game. A tad limited on character selection but the moves are impressive and the combos are also very good. Tekken still rules as far as I am concerned but Virtua Fighter is a good title to own if you like these kind of games.

Sega could have done worse

Well I've been playing fighting games since I can remember - the look on my 3 brothers faces as we kicked each others butts, oh the memories. This one is good but not the best. The graphics are good ... Lets start with the number of players - 13 could be more but the detailed put into the 13 is great. No duplications with a change of wardrobe or body type with the same moves. The Bryants are the closests but still a little different. There could have easily been more than 15 and that probably put them over this hump everyone comments on. Moving on - difficulty of moves - like I said I have played almost every fighting game under the sun or moon and these moves are on the difficult side. Many days of training mode are necessary to be able to deliver any kind of damage the computer. AI in this game is top notch. The Kumite mode is awesome as you learn the different ranks and do pay attention to the rank of who you are fighting, if they are at least 3 or 4 ranks above you it will take you best moves to win and lets hope you know more than 4 or 5 move cause the computer will block those for sure. Reversals are near impossible unlike the DOA series and even more difficult than the Tekken series. The ring out option is very nice but some might disagree and say the fight is not over until I am KOed. I miss the story lines - why again is all this fighting taking place and what reward do I have for kicking all this [behind]?? ... Come on guys quit being lazy throw us a bone. ...This game is difficult even for the masters of this genre. Getting to the rank of Hero is still on my list but I am at least 7 ranks away. This game is tough. Worth buying though if you love fighting games - ...

Pleased.

I recently purchased VF4 and I like the different styles that are displayed in the game. The graphics are awesome and the game is fun. I would suggest to buy this game.

awesome pace, varied characters and stunning graphics are all good but the problem I had with it was that there were not enough modes. After arcade mode that left me feeling kind of empty because I did not get an ending to the intruiging stories of the characters all I had was Kume mode which I felt was a little funner than arcade but not enough to make me keep playing. There is also the AI function where you can make a computer character learn your style but there is no guidance in the manual for assistance to go about doing this. Once I figured it out I found myself bored after I had taught my character and did not know what to do with it because watching it play the game was about as boring as counting blades of grass in a football field. My suggestion is to look for a game with more replay value unless you like fighting games more than anything else.
