Trust me, wait for Soul Calibur 2

I have a Dreamcast with Soul Calibur and was hoping VF4 would hold me over till Soul Calibur 2. Big disappointment. I guess it's an okay fighter (not a huge fighter fan), but compared to Soul Calibur it's:
1) Too slow
2) Not very flashy. The graphics aren't quite as smooth as the ones on the Dreamcast.
3) Less intuitive.

I was expecting more based on all the reviews I read. VF4 just doesn't cut the mustard. For instance, the characters take up the whole freaking screen. Leaves less room to manuever around leg attacks.

On the plus side, the AI mode is cool. Making your own fighter would be a great add on for Soul Calibur.

I wish I had waited for Soul Calibur II.

Best hand to hand game ever?

You may be thinkiing hmmmm ill wait until tekken 4 comes out this fall, but you dont need to because this game will be better. Yu suzuki, the famed producer of hang on, space harrier, virtua fighter series, and shenmue brings you his latest installment vf4. He has converted this masterpiece to the ps2 in all of its naomi 2 graphic glory. Also added an advanced training portion, customizable characters, and unlockable bonuses. This is the best fighting game ever because the more you play the better you become unlike button mashers where even the best go down unfair. Do yourself a favor and buy this game

I can't wait to get this game!

I never played this game, but all I know is that this game will be like Virtua Fighter 2 and that was awesome!

Good, but not necessarily better than Soul Calibur

First things first, I should probably qualify my review by saying that I am not one of those people who beats long lines of would-be fighters in arcades. I am not even what one would call a rabid fighting game fan. I'm just a normal Joe who has gotten into the genre very recently.

Some of you may have heard of the Dreamcast game Soul Calibur. This amazing game -- which got perfect scores from virtually every major reviewer -- pulled me into the fighting genre. So it's natural that I compare my second fighting game -- Virtua Fighter 4 -- with this one.

Virtua Fighter 4 has some pretty great gameplay. The moves are legion, they're complex, and they look pretty good. It's nice to see a myriad of different styles among the fighters -- Vanessa with her brutal Thai kick boxing moves, Lei Fei with his Jet Li-esque dramatic kung fu poses.

They also have a terrific training mode, and some very good 8-way movement. By that I mean that, like in Soul Calibur, the characters can move around each other, a full 360 degrees. You can end up moving to the side and catch your opponent sending kicks into empty air. This makes the game feel a lot more realistic.

But, I can't say that the animation matches the gameplay. Soul Calibur was a wonder to behold. Clothing russled realistically, and every motion was super smooth, having just the right amount of tension and speed. It was amazingly realistic -- blocked hits would make the blocker shudder, weapons had cool looking swish arcs, and the camera would swoosh around dramatically to add a very cinematic feel to the game.

In this department, I found Virtua Fighter 4 a bit wanting. The graphics aren't as sharp. But above all, the animation and characters just aren't quite as good. Clothing flutters, but only in parts, while other parts remain frozen. Above all the combat animations aren't as wonderfully smooth. In Soul Calibur, the ax-wielding Astaroth would wind up like a batter, and then unleash an enormous light-speed blow that would send opponents flying across the ring. The slow tension of the wind-up, the lightning fast release, and the realistic crack and flying of the victim, just aren't quite as dynamically captured in Virtua Fighter 4.

Don't get me wrong -- it's a good game. It's gameplay may even be deeper -- something a novice like myself wouldn't recognize. But as eye candy, it's just good, but it's not a leader. That may have to wait until Soul Calibur 2.

Great Game

Hey fans, Virtua Fighter 4 is great game however, there are a few things they left out. Granted yes, the gameplay, action, moves and all out graphics are better. Personally, they forgot to get better voice characters and sound effects. Is it just me or does it sound like the same re-hashed punch and kick sound effects were used? Also, Lion sounds a like a chode.

The other thing is, THEY FORGOT THE SUMO WRESTLER! I know I'm going to hear it for a while about this but, don't you think it's a little more challenging to use a guy that wasn't as fast or could even jump on you over and over for once? I mean, all you have to do to kick some [bottom] with Jacky or Kage is, kick your opponent in the face and give them that suicide knee drop or head-butt.

And last but not least, why is it Akira is always the last guy before Dural? In my opinion Kage, Wolf, Jacky and even Sarah showed a lot more promise than Akira. He didn't even get new moves! Still, rent this game, see if you like it and then BUY IT! Have Fun!

time and also fighting are what you are up against for the game in which fight. please punch and kick me and i will also punch and kick you. you may also jump if you need to jump. i am very much good with jump. many of the hours have been distributed to jump. many thanks to the makers for a game that can be played like tekken 4. if one is to compare games, the one is faster than other with tekken 4 being the second game to come to my store but virtu fighter 4 being faster to my store. then in that case one would buy the game. thank you and enjoy the jump or perhaps you may like other game which may or may not feature jump.

Extremely challenging and fun!

This game is my favorite 3D fighter. Real martial arts styles, balanced characters, Kumite Mode...the list goes on. If you want a real fighting game, check this one out. You might want to see Sstreet Fighter Alpha 3, Capcom vs. SNK 2, and Soul Calibur also. Warning: this game will take hours to master. Even though the game only uses 3 buttons, the level of technique required to get high rankings is high. The training modes are awesome and help you achieve your goals.

The best fighting game on Playstation 2 thus far

VIRTUA FIGHTER 4 is undoubtedly the best fighting game out on Playstation 2, edging out DEAD OR ALIVE 2: HARDCORE. There are a total of thirteen fighters, each of whom possesses an entirely unique arsenal of moves and a personal fighting style. The graphics are fluid and impressive (although not as photorealistic as DEAD OR ALIVE 3 on Xbox). New fighters to the game include Lei Fei, a Shaolin Monk. Older fighters reprise their roles and come back with a lot of new moves.

For older Virtua Fighter players, you will find that there is enough to make this a worthwhile purchase. New features include training your own Artificial Intelligence fighter, which is both fun and painstaking (just like keeping a real pet). There is also a Kumite Mode, where you can advance in ranks all the way from the lowly 1st kyu to the mighty High King or Emperor. Reaching the highest ranks requires a considerable amount of skill and time, but is well worth the effort (and is fun to boot!).

For those new to the Virtua Fighter series, there is a lot to recommend here. VIRTUA FIGHTER 4 is not a reversal fest like some other games, and there are enough of a variety of fighters to satisfy both the button mashers and those who need precise control over their fighters. There are also a ton of features (some mentioned above) that make the replay value very high.

Overall, this is an excellent purchase and will definitely compete with Tekken 4 when that comes out. I doubt that will be anything noticeably better until the release of Soul Calibur 2.

This game [is smelly]! Of course the magazines hyped it up! And it ain't nuttin' but hype! Pure Hype! Hypenomics! The gameplay has a lazy feel to it. The colors aren't visually fit for anything.
Ugly! Please I bought this game and had to suffer as the game magazines hyped me up to the extent of buying. I felt dejected and disappointed as this game has nothin' to offer....

Ohhh... a Ninja

Virtua Fighter 4 is a pretty sound fighting game, with pretty simple controls, and a wide range of moves.

The one complaint I have is that it looks worse on my HDTV than it did on my old TV. The edges of the characters are very jagged. None of my other PS2 or Game Cube games have this same problem.
