Virtua Fighter 4 surprised me in its wondrful display of fighting technique. The game encompasses new techniques, better graphics, and more versitile world than that of the earlier games. What was so surprising about this game was the major change in character development. An hour in survival mode would a story previously not seen in this series. Also the training mode offers much more in ways of learning now, but one of the best features had to be the additions to your character for surviving in survival mode. This game obviously far surpasses any virtua fighter game and is right now the best fighting game on ps2 but I am waiting for Tekken4.

I really don't see why websites can rate this game in the 9's. It's graphics sure beats most, but that seems to be the only catergory it excells in. i think i just may be the only one who dosen't give "pity 9.3's" just cause it's a fighting game. Dead or Alive however, earns each of it's five stars and problably more. In this game the music's barely "okay", the sound effects seem weak, no real sense of power. One of the worst things about this game is that you can win a fair amount of your matches just doing the same three-hit punch combo (which practically everyone has). And some moves, seem near impossible to do once, and impossible pereod to do consistently. This game MIGHT be worth the twenty bucks. i was one of the more unfortunate to pay fifty bucks for it.

This is one of the best fighting games I have ever played. The graphics are the bomb and it looks really cool. The fighters are also awesome. The fighting styles are amazing such as Jeet Kune Doo,Koen-Ken,Drunken Kung-Fu,Ensei-Ken,and a whole lot more. The fighting combos are so cool, and everyone has a list of cool moves and things you can do to kick the [stuffing]out of people. The only thing that will make you think 'oh how gay' would be reading the instruction manuel's character bios.Like Wolf Hawkfield,he entered to tourament because of "recurring nightmares of the apocalypse". You sit there thinking what? The bios are really stupid, but the characters are awesome. You must master the fighting styles of the characters and become the best. You can create a character in the datafiles and challenge your skills against the people in the Kumite mode. This is by far the best fighting game, and I reccommend it to all you lovers of fighting video games and everyone else who have not played this game.

This game is incredible. I would give it 5 stars, but there's always room for improvement. This is the closest thing to perfect I've ever seen in a fighting game though.
Cons: There are 13 solid characters, but in arcade mode, you always play against them ALL and always in exactly the same order. I find this slightly less interesting than playing them at random with increasing levels of difficulty. I think that sometimes it might be nice to fight Akira first instead of last. Also, this is a nitpick, but I thought some of the voice acting was a bit corny. Espcially Lion Rafale's voice which sounds really close to "Keith" (aka Black Lion) from the Voltron Force. Kinda funny.
Pros:Those two tiny things aside, this is the most breathtakingly beautiful and fun fighting game I have ever played. The stages are well put together. The interactive elements like snow, sand and water really add a nice touch instead of just seeming like they're part of the background. I love the data files feature and the ability to customize the look of your characters through color changes and items. The characters are pretty diverse and while you don't get as many as other games, the characters are less like each other so you don't get "clones" disguised as "more characters". This diversity also lets your personal style really shine through. For example, if you're a defensive player who's into reversals and parries, you'll have a great time humiliating your friends with Aoi.

Overall, this game is well worth the time and money if you're into fighters. It has a completely different feel than the Tekken series and it will surely keep you busy in the dojo for a long time.

Best Fighter Ever Made, 'Nuff Said.

There's no fancy way to describe what makes VF4 such a great game, it's just characterized by the so-called "small things" it does so well, and heres a list that will help you out to decide if this masterpiece deserves a place in your library...
1. A deep game engine that is one-of-a-kind, one where you must form a "bond" with your character and use them frequently as no fighter's moves can all be figured out in one sitting, so this is a warning to all Tekken and Street Fighter fans who are used to button-mashing mayhem and less challenge in exchange for cool powers.
2. Virtua Fighter is actually a Fighter's Fighter in every teensy weensy retrospective of the word. If you like a challenge, this is a must.
3. 100% guarantee you'll find at least one character you can relate to in your own little demented way.
4. A hefty 13-man roster with characters that have hundreds of moves to theirselves and unique looks and real fighting styles.
5. THE GRAPHICS!- I've saw pretty graphics in Tekken Tag, but Tekken doesn't compare to VF4, believe me when I tell you these are the best ever in a 3D fighter, for proof, watch Lei Fei kick and see his sleeves flap, it's awesome.

Wow...Not Living Up to the Hype :(

Ok, so I recently sold my XBOX and all my games (including Dead or Alive 3) and then bought a PS2. So far, I've been completely satisfied...well that is until Virtua Fighter 4...

I've been a fan of 3D fighting games since the original Virtua Fighter in the arcade. Since then many games have come out expanding the original concept of 3D fighting. Tekken was a major breakthough along with Soul Blade coming out around the same time. This is what is most frustrating about VF4...it has the same general features and gameplay of the original VF, which now very boring. The only new concept it introduces in fact (well knew to VF series at least) is that of new fighting style adjustments and counters. Unfortunately these features are very poorly implemented in comparison to Dead or Alive 3, which had extremely smooth transition animations with its counter moves.

The moves in VF4 are also sub-par. They remind me of the original Mortal Kombat for Super Nintendo...slow, poorly animated, and very unsatisfying to pull off. The physics model doesn't help the situation, either. Similar to DOA3 and most 3D fighting games, you can perform terribly unrealistic moves in which your fighter defies gravity, but unlike those other games, VF4 lack of smooth and quick animations add to the feeling that you're fighting in slow motion in a cheesy martial arts movie made in America.

Graphically, the environments are very complex, but the graphics are just NOT GOOD. The polygon count is very low and the textures are bad. Combine that with a fairly low-resolution(because PS2 isn't nearly as good as Gamecube or XBOX)and you get something that looks like it should be played on a Sega Saturn or a PSOne.

There are some bright spots, however. The sound in game is extremely good, there are plenty of options and cool modes (like training an AI to play a certain way and then watching them fight...like coaching mode in football games).

All in all, I give this a game a "D" for minimal effort. The only thing that keeps it from gettin' an "F" is the few bright spots that should appear in future titles.

i HATE this game!

there is absolutely no story line! there is only one secret character to unlock!this game doesn't even go par with Tekken 4(great game Tekken 4 is!)you are trapped in a little box or your on a little spuare where you always get ring-out.you get to get items to put on your character but, that makes them look ugly.

I don't like this game so I guess I'm an outsider.

This game has many flaws in my opinoin. But before I start complaining let me start with what I think is good about this game. I think the graphics and lighting effects are very good and may beet out tekken and soul blade. Some of the moves are cool when executed, and although i haven't played it I think the multiplayer will also be very good. Now what I don't like. The fact there's only three real action buttons, guard, punch, and kick, doesn't make for a real exciting fighting engine unlike tekken or soul blade. And although some of the moves are cool looking, most are sub-par. Most of the characters fighting engines are pretty much the same. And now my biggest complaint. You can only gain one new character. Now I don't know what everyone else plays fighting games for but I play them to win things. The only game that I can remember that doesn't have many people to win is Soul Blade which still remains at the top of my fighting games list, because it has weapons, I meen come on weapons rule. While tekken tag starts with many characters to start with and many more to win, when you only have one character to gain from a game it's pretty pathetic. Anyways that's my opinoin and it doesn't seem to be the same with many others so I say rent it and decide for yourself.

Best Fighting game so far

Tekken is a good series. But it is no where near as perfect as virtual fighter. Mortal Kombat is the only series that comes even close.Graphics are great, controls are solid, and it never slows down. This is the second best PS2 game.1st being MGS2.
