First off, you'll only play as snake for 2 of maybe 13 quick hours (you should know that). You should also know that this isn't so much a sequel as a new game using MGS's engine and old characters, while mostly creating new ones. I could easily do without 4 hours time. Bad guys are way too powerful to be taken seriously, they mostly bring back the guys they killed in the last one, and you won't care about their character. All characters drone on about 10 minutes too long each time they contact you, they repeat things, rephrase things and generally annoy and slow you down. The gameplay is very slight, it feels like a VR Mission that has the lightest storyline tied into it, that goes nowhere. MGS2 is mostly a a statement on gameplaying, lies, acceptance and the concept of reality instead, which I found very dull. Everything about it tries to be less like a game, more like a movie and as authentic as possible - it kind of brings down gameplay, and it becomes dry in that. There are 3-4 really fun moments that you might want to replay, but the game itself has no real replay value. It doesn't come close to touching MGS1, or even VR Missions, for it's gameplay. How it works is, the game starts out getting you attached to new characters, you accept and believe new relationships in the game - doing what they tell you to do, then they tell you it was all [made up] and was a killing sim (the Colonel speaks for the game designers telling us about the videogame itself). The enemy politics they constantly update you of about switching back and forth aren't important at all. The character models for FORTUNE and VAMP are smooth and simplistic and to be honest, I preferred the more detailed and ugly look of MGS1's models. When the villains mentioned how they wanted censorship of context, you could've applied it to the game (there was so much that should have been edited)! I've seen this story done before and told better in movies like Matrix, I was just wanting to play a fun game here and I don't think that was ultimately accomplished. They try to confuse you and even try to offer two very different pieces of advice. I'm very disappointed that this was the direction Metal Gear took, as I was really looking forward to this in spite of what I'd heard. I was ready to buy this sight unseen, but I'm sooo glad I rented first, I advise everyone to do the same (and be wary of future MGS releases). If you're looking for a game as I was, you'll find something else entirely, as far from MGS1 as you can get, (very pretentious) hopefully they'll return to the old formula ASAP.
Metal Gear Solid 2 should come with a free pillow...zzzzz...

There is no doubt this game has stunning graphics and amazing depth on top of a possibly great story, but there are way too many problems the game creators are responsible for that ruin the whole thing.
The biggest problem is the endless computer-animated movies and dialogue that will take up (and I'm not exaggerating) almost 50% of the time you spend playing. You don't get to play this game, you mostly just watch it. Everytime you enter a new room it seems like a movie starts up or you have to sit through a tedious and banal conversation on your radio. You can skip these, thank goodness, but then you feel like you're missing something.
These movies completely break up the rhythm of the game and takes you from falling asleep to suddenly fighting some superhuman boss. It's a great way to get to you forget the controls which are very complicated and not really logical as a matter of fact.
And I won't even get started on the bosses who are all poor X-men knock-offs. Really.
In summary: Overrated. Could have been sooo much better.

I know someone is going to try and bite me for saying this, seeing as how every person I've ever talked to that has played the Metal Gear Solid games absolutely loved them, but I didn't.
I've got the demo for MGS2, and played the first game, and if you are one of those rare people who didn't like the first game, this one is more of the same, sure the graphics are tremendously better, but the gameplay is no different.
What more can be said about this game...

This is the worst game ever for a PS2. Why? Lets see: No 1st Person view, guns stink, fighting stinks, plot stinks, conversations stink, movies are too long, graphics paritally stink...to sum it up in two words: THIS GAME STINKS!
Excellent but...

Why buy this game now when an enhanced version will be coming out in 6 months for XBOX? If you plan to own XBOX in the future, I'd definitely hold off on the PS2 version.
Not Exciting

I've played the demo for this game and it is not exciting. All you do is hide. I am not a fan of this series overall. The stories are boring and simplistic.

By all accounts, a truly awesome game, with amazing features. But keep in mind, that getting this version will only placate for a short while. In a few weeks, Konami will likely open up about the X-Box version...
Let's see, pay the same price now to play the game on an inferior system that maxes out at 30 million polygons, or play it off of a system that can carry out 100 million polygons with features that would kill the poorer PS2. Don't spend your money here, get the XBox, then get Metal Gear Solid X.
oh my god
