This is fun. We never had the earlier versions for the PS 1, so it is all new to us. You nead a "license" to qualify for the harder courses and you have to "buy" your more advanced cars with winnings from previous races. I bought the Logitec steering wheel and pedals as well. Makes for a great package.

GT3 is the most realistic, most fun, most replayable video game I have ever played.
Without exception, the cars look great and perform as they would in the real world. The physics, especially in the replays, are wonderful to watch. Rendering of the environments is also wonderful. Monaco, Tahiti, and Rome are my favorites (Laguna Secca is nice, too), as they have the most interesting background scenery.
Sound, too, is great. Engines have distinct tones in the low, middle, and high RPM ranges (you can tell a Bimmer from a Porsche), and braking, skidding, etc. all sound surprisingly realistic.
Finally, the variety of everything (the tracks, the cars, the upgrades) is what gives this game a perfect five. There is SO much to do, buy, race, and see that you could play this game for a very, VERY long time before getting bored--unless you hate racing games (and I mean HATE).
Just a really fantastic game. Perfectly executed in every way.

Now, first of all, I'm no car-freak. I can change oil, filters, and all that junk, but tweaking gear ratios, balancing brake systems, or messing with the downforce of a car is just out of my league. So, I get this game: Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, which for us Earthlings sorta means "Grand Touring: Special Edition."
I pop in the disc, and I start with Arcade Mode. I figure that it'd be easier if I just take it one track at a time. Well, I decide I'm going to tackle the first course, a relative oval-shaped track, with a souped up Dodge Viper. I always wanted one of these, and now I ca (sorta) drive one. This thing is so fast, it'll blast by you at 140 mph without a problem. So, I start the race. I'm feeling the vibration of the track in my controller, and I push it past the computer competition. I'm a little too high on the track, and the car spins out. The whole competition passes me. I slam it in reverse, do a little tailspin, and I'm back on the track. The race is 2 laps long, so I have some time. I press the "X" button to accelerate, and the Viper hauls but down the track. I'm in 6th place now. I see the first car up ahead, and I pass it easily. 5th place. Two cars are side-by-side in front of me and I have to go down to the inside to pass both of them. Now, I'm in third. I'm rounding the last corner to complete the first lap, and I'm in Third Place. I cross the Start line at an incredible speed, and I have the fastest top speed. I reach the next car before Turn #1, and I'm now in second. But lo and behold, the lead car is a car JUST LIKE MINE! Another Viper is leading, and I have to catch it before it reaches the finish line. Pride is at stake because my wife is watching this and she wants to know what's to be excited about. I take Turn #3 better than before, but I'm about a full second behind. I creep up behind the other Viper in the straightaway, and I inadvertantly bump him, which sends me into a near-spin. I recover, but the other car has extended its lead some more. We enter the final turn. It's a tricky one meant for precise braking and throttle strategy. I take the turn without tire skid, and I'm headed down the final straightaway. I'm drafting behind the lead Viper, and at the last second, I use that extra boost to pull ahead and cross the finish line FIRST! I WON! My wife's happy, I'm exhausted, and if I've done anything to encourage you to buy this game, I've made at least one more person happy. Unlike any other driving game on a platform system, GT3: A-Spec is definitely the MUST BUY of the Year 2K1.
Great game!

I bought my Playstation 2 a few months ago excited by the hype. So far I've been sorely disappointed by the variety and quality of the games available. I've enjoyed Onimusha and Moto GP and that has been it up until Gran Turismo 3. This game is stunning. The graphics are incredible. I played a demo of Gran Turismo 2 on a disc from a Playstation magazine and the graphics on that game are like comparing Steamboat Willy to Akira. The cars are beautifully rendered and the lighting effects are outstanding. As far as gameplay this is a well balanced game. I consider myself a novice gamer with some middle level skill. This game isn't frustratingly hard or boringly easy. The challenge progresses easily and naturally. The earlier stages of the game are more fun because the cars are slower and a little more skill is involved. The analog controls really capture the feel of gravel crunching under your wheels in the rally races. There's a lot of fun involved in tuning the cars and each car handles with it's own unique personality. My favorites are the TVR Speed 12 and the Ford GT-40 road car. Most people into racing games probably already own this title, if you are new to video games or you aren't really a fan of racing but don't mind it I would highly recommend this game. It's worth the money and will keep you entertained for weeks.
Wonderful graphics and realism, but a little bit boring

This game gets 5 stars for realism in terms of gameplay, 5 stars for having the most beautiful realistic graphics I've ever seen, 5 stars for the sound effects and music. There are lots of options for almost everything you can think of. This is a very well done game. The only thing that is missing is the FUN. Its so realistic that its a little bit boring. And so for the lack of any real fun factor I give this game 3 stars. This game came with my PlayStation2 and it really shows off what the PlayStation2 can do. Anyone who likes realistic games will love this game. Its got the realism of the feel of real high speed racing. When I play this game I feel like I'm really driving. But the realism for me is the killer of the game. In my opinion "Test Drive Off Road: Wide Open" and "Crazy Taxi" are much more fun to play than this one is. The reason? They are fantasy games, unrealistic, and they are not held back by the need to be realistic.
It's just like the other Gran Turismo games

Theres really no difference between this game and the other Gran Turismo games. The differences graphics, tracks, and cars. The handling can be troubling sometimes. There are no Porsche's and Ferrari's which make the game worse. If your a new comer to the Gran Turismo series then this would be a great game, but if you have the other two then don't waist your time on this one.
just plain bad

I really wasn't impressed with the graphics in this game, unless I missed something by only playing the 2-player versus mode then these graphics are rather poor. I also can't recall any of the soundtrack so I guess it wasn't too memorable. The control of the cars didn't seem all that impressive either.

This game is the reason you should own a PS2. The realtime lighting effects are jaw-dropping(the rain effects have to be seen to be believed). The sun on certain levels during sunset and dawn can cause major glare just like real life. My parents were fooled into thinking they were watching a car commercial instead of a game. I don't care what Microsoft claims about what the X-BOX can do, this beats everything it has to offer. The graphics are so good,it might even bring a tear to you're eye. The framerate blasts away at a constant 60 Frames-Per-Second. Besides the graphics, let's talk about the A.I. Most people i've talked to have said that the A.I. is very predictable. This is only true in Arcade Mode. Halfway through the Beginner Cup in Sim Mode, I noticed that the AI cars were starting to loose the predictability they once had. By the third to the last cup in Begginer(there's 5 modes in sim), the AI got extremely real. In the SEATTLE CIRCUIT, the AI was brutal..If you hit a car several times(or slam it into a wall at 170 MPH like i did) it gets beyond upset. One time it got so bad that i was teamed up on by all five cars(AT THE SAME TIME) and by the time i recovered, they were long gone. But the challenge of the races made victory that much sweeter and WILL result in the yelling of <"HELL YEAH!!! WHO'S YOUR DADDY!!!!at the end of race.(some races are so close that you can win by 0.005 seconds) The physics were very realistic yet fun. Piece of advice. Lean on another car(preferably on a tight turn) sothat you're slightly parallel to the opposing car, and you'll end up faster than that car. It work's like a charm. This game is very time consuming. Weeks will go by like minutes, but it's worth every second. The Logitech Force-Feedback Wheel is very good to and brings up the realism even more. Personally, I'm glad Sony delayed this game 9 months. It's an absolute masterpiece, and I give it my highest rating. Kudos to SONY.
