For myself, Final Fantasy X has been what all the others were for me: a very entertaining diversion that kept me glued to the console until I finished playing the game two or three times. The worlds in the FF games are always enormous, and it hasn't been unusual for me to spend 120 hours on a single playthrough as I seek out everything the game has to offer.
This is a very linear game, as other people have observed. Myself, I find that linearity rather compelling, as the stakes keep rising the closer the pilgrims get to their goal.
Filled with the usual twists, turns and shocks that players have come to expect from this series, this one's a corker of an adventure with graphics and sound unlike any game you've ever experienced.
I just finished the game yesterday, and I have to say that it was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had. No, the final bosses weren't all that tough, but they were appropriate to the story: you understood why you were fighting them and what was at stake. After the showdown, you're treated to a theatrical-quality animated denoument that will move all but the most cynical. I was so enthralled by the experience that I immediately went back and played the final bosses again, just to see the end of the story one more time.
Is this for real?

After playing for three days on the new FF offering of Squaresoft, I must confess that I am startled about the advances of DVD technology. Here we have a game with a HUGE amount of voiceover, STUNNING graphics, and yet the entire thing sits on one CD? I am amazed.
If there is a problem (and it is a small one at best), it is the fact that the game is so linear. In fact, the world map (a staple in previous Fantasies) is completely absent, replaced by, well, a line. Nonetheless, the game is excellent, once again buoying my faith in video games.
The mini-games and side quests (and there are many) are quite enjoyable, but are really only feasible during a second playing of the game (you'll want to know how the story finishes, I presume). Also, for once, the bosses are difficult, requiring a good bit of strategy (but DON'T buy the guide; I'm sure it spoils everything), and the random enemies are no piece of cake, either.
Finally, money for once has a use!
All in all, a fine gaming experience...
The best modern Final Fantasy game yet!

Sure, FFVII was a huge leap in graphics and gameplay, and VIII and IX improved at least in the graphics area (I wasn't too thrilled with the stories in VIII and IX), but X blows them all away.
The first Final Fantasy to take advantage of the PS2 with it's superior memory and graphics capabilities. FFX's graphics are superb! There are basically 3 different levels of graphics, the gameplay, which is the lowest in detail, the cutscenes, which are slightly higher in graphics, and the full motion videos, which are absolutely the best I've seen in any game! One of the best examples of the high quality video capabilities is the first time you see Lulu (the magic user) in a FMV. The detail in her costume (especially the belts) is the best I've seen for the PS2.
Setting the graphics aside (Hey, it's a FF game, you should expect great graphics) and on to the game itself:
About twice as long as any of the recent games (VII, VIII & IX were about 20 hours or so if you zipped through), FFX will take at least 30 hours to beat, and that is if you know what you are doing.
One thing that might disappoint fans of the Final Fantasy series is that FFX is a lot more dirrect than the other games were. Although I am not very familiar with IX (and told I hadn't missed much), FFVII and VIII allowed for a lot of wandering around to build up levels, this was done mainly in wandering around on the map and running into random groups of monsters. But FFX is missing the map that you may be familiar with, in fact there isn't much of a chance to wander around at all. 75% of the game is spent on a narrow trail with very few intersections and choices in dirrections. For the most part of the game you are given a single trail, and a direction (given on the small transparent blue map that is a familiar site).
Another big change in gameplay is the way that your character increases their skill. There are no "levels" really, instead you earn points from battles which eventually give you "levels" but those levels are then spent in conjunction with spheres that you pick up along the way in an elaborate system of earning HP, MP, magic, and specials. I'd try and explain it, but it isn't important, and it is explained in the game.
With this latest installment in the FF series Square has continued it's streak of keeping in head of the other RPGs, and eating hours of our time that should probably be spent sleeping, but you just couldn't find that save spot that wasn't in the middle of a plot twist until about 4AM.
Strap on your seatbelt & get ready for an amazing ride!

This is the most amazing RPG I've every played. My entire family has played all the Final Fantasy games, which are all great games, but this game has graphics that'll knock your socks off! The 3D graphics are so realistic you feel like you are watching a movie. The action scenes are so intense I actually stood up next to my daughter as she was playing the game -- great special effects and amazing artwork -- in one scene you can see droplets of water coming off the boots of one of the main characters that look real. The battle scenes are pretty intense since they appear to be so real -- the one good thing is I didn't see any blood in the battle scenes, creatures disappear when they are vanquished in battles. Some parts of this may still be too intense for young viewers/players due to the huge disaster in the beginning being so realistic.
This is not an easy game by any means -- one word of advice: buy the strategy guide, you will feel lost without it.

Overview: FFX Project 1997-2001
A marvel in the RPG field, breathtaking visuals and an interesting twist to somewhat familiar plotlines. That doesn't mean the plot is overly predictable or trite, it isn't. Like FFVII & IX, you get the sense that after you beat the game, you've just come back from a long, intense journey. There's no need to retread the synopsis of FFX, I think you already know by now what it's about. The only drawback, in a sense that is because you can revisit places when you acquire the Airship, is the loss of the world map. The voiceovers, which many have had problems with, are comical in areas, yet much appreciated compared to the pop-up box of old. When you look at the FF series, your compelled to be spiritual and engaged to the characters and story, with each FF building upon the fundamentals of the last release. The characters aren't the same in every one, actually, there are no mainstay characters like other RPG's. Case in point, there are no retreads of tired stories and characters locked in the same worlds for decades. FFX is fresh, a welcome change in the stale world of RPG's. Don't get me wrong, there are other RPG's out there with quality, but you have to look in this saturated market.
Game Controls:
Simple enough for anyone.
Strategy:
I've heard a lot of flack on the strategy of FFX, i.e. the game is too short, too linear, and on and on. My suggestion is that you look on Squaresoft's PlayOnline website and you'll find that there are many secret areas, both on the "world map" and different things you're going to find that you missed inside the Cloister of Trials & Temples.
Replay Value:
As with all FF releases, it depends on what you think of the story, what other games you favor, but for the most part it is incredibly high. FF has always been the type of game that you put away for 6 months or even several years, but want to revisit. It's a solid buy that plays longer than its price tag. And for those of you who resell, generally, FF maintains its value (imagine that, a software title holding its value!) check out the varying prices of FF titles (by sellers, not retailers.)
Graphics:
State of the art. The gameplay is real and believable. The video sequences are one of the most realistic ever seen. You're more a part of this world than in most any other RPG.
Main Characters:
Some of the lines spoken and characters are meant for children. Tidus, Rikku, and Yuna are great characters, but they lack the depth of mystery that eminates from Sir Auron, Kimarhi, and Lulu. Wakka is just plain fun. As for the bad characters: Maester Seymour is a pain, yet impressive character, along with his Guado followers. The beasts and bosses are harder than IX and can take some time for the average gamer to figure out. Sir Jecht is Tidus' father and although a jerk, he's also a sad character, even for a bad guy.
Overall:
A don't miss title that will surely be around the archives for years to come.

I haven't beaten the game, but I'm practically done now, I'm only doing the side quests, and my friend showed me the ending so I know a bit about the game. First of all, the games got a great story. My only conplaint is that it's pretty damn short. Even though you seem to take a long time to get to the end, it's not a very long story. For those of you who played FFVIII or games like Skies Of Arcadia, this is nowhere near that long. It's probably Squaresofts shortest game so far. However, the story is endearing, and truely moving.
The characters and loveable and interesting. Tidus does get annoying sometimes with his girly attitude, but later on becomes a much better and mature character. The other characters are also enjoyable to listen to and be around in the game. Wakka, Lulu, Kimahri, Rikku, Arlon, and Yuna. They are all great characters.
The battle system is superb this time around, with battles being both entertaining and strategic. The only problem is that they take a long time to complete. Specially the harder fiends, they require some time and patience. However, the sphere grid is also a nice touch on the levelling up system making it a much more enjoyable process.
The game is quite linear but who cares, there's pleanty to do and many small things to find. This is one game no one should miss out on.
Just what you would expect from Square and the FF series!

I basically bought my PS2 for this game and the ones schedueled to come. I never was a big RPG fan until FF7 was introduced to me and I fell in love with the games and now I am always hours into a game of Final Fantasy or other similar RPG's. This game is by far graphically the best one I have played yet. The movies andinteractions are visually stunning. Just watch the first 20 minutes of the game and be blown away. The downfalls of the game I have noticed thus far are that the dubbing of the english voices has kinda made many of the dialouge sequences drag and seem awkward. THe characters speak their line and then you have to wait a second or so watching their lips moving until the next character speaks. FOr a few sequences this got really bad and to the point as that even grunts or sighs were delayed. Another thing is if you don't like being engulfed in Story or movies then you might be frustrated with the first few hours of the game where basically all it is is STORY STORY STORY and you have little chances to move and interact or fight. Eventually though you get going and I'd say after about 5-6 hours you reach a point where the story slows down and gives you time to explore manually. It is kinda funny though how after all those hours of story you and your character still have no clue as to what the heck is going on. Finally the last thing that can be a minus is that your character is a dweeb. The first few times you hear him talk after the beginning I thought "What a moron!" [...] his character isn't always linear. Meaning sometimes he is smart and confident and then all of a sudden he is a clueless fool. THis just doesn't help the character development flow since he changes all the time from one form to another. But even with my nit picking I still love the game. It has all the classic qualities of the Final Fantasy series and even though they always change the magic and development system after a short while you will pick it up and feel right at home when you see how similar it is to the old titles. If you love Final Fantasy or are just a big RPG fan you cannot miss this game.
Now this is what you have been waiting for!

You haven't played Playstation 2 until you have played Final Fantasy X. This is what was promised when the game system came out and Squarsoft has delivered. You can't tell the movies from the game. It flows smoothly. It easier to maneuver in battles. I could go on and on. This is a must have for all gamers.

How can any gamer in their right mind possible question this game. This game has one of the best storylines of any ff title (or any title for that matter). In addition the character development and battle systems are deffinatly the best of the best. The graphics are obviously stunning due to the power ot the ps2. The voice acting adds a new depth to the characters. The only dissapointing thing for me in this game is that at times the lip sinking is horrible but i find this to effect the game very little. Over all this is one of the best rpg's of all time and the best ps2 title (well that is along with mgs2).

Actually this is the first FF game I've played so don't count me in the horde FF lunatics.
Graphics:9/10: The graphics are amazing. It took me 68 hours to beat this game and every bit of the way was gorgeous. It's hard to beileve that put it all on one CD
Sound:9/10: The music is perfect and every voice over is perfect except for one. Tidus. What were they thinking when they hired him? I would've given sound a perfect score if it were'nt for Tidus!
Control:8/10: the only problem is it's a little to easy to heal your enemy during battle or attack yourself. Other than that the controls are you standard RPG affair.
Pros:
A new leveling up system
Voice overs
FF game
tons of CG cinemas
Cons
Tidus
May be to many CG cimnemas
OVERALL fun: 10/10
