Final Fantasy X

There seems to be some very strong sentiments with this game. Either you love it (which seems to be mostly populated with Square's fan cult) or hate it.

Around the first ten hours of the game play very slowly. You seemingly barely move and then you get stuck in some 10 minute cinematic. I can see why that would frustrate people, and that is probably a very worthy criticism of this game. However, if you can survive that, the game starts kicking in, and you don't get as many cinematic interruptions.

Don't make a mistake: this is a very *long* game. Those 10 hours are only a fraction of the game. I'm about at the 15 hour mark myself currently, so I wish I could comment on the rest of the game, but, thus far, I'm quite pleased with the game. It was worth the $19.99 I spent on it. :P

As for those complaining about the voice acting or the characters, I think much of it is people having too high of expectations. It is still a video game, nonetheless, and quite an interesting one.

Hack, Bash, Slash, and Cast Spells, with a bit of story.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. The story itself doesn't get interesting until halfway through the game. And then you get hit with a very important revelation.

The story takes place in the continent of Spira. Apparently this continent and its people are regularly terrorized by a monster called "sin". The only ones who can stop sin are special people called "summoners". The Summoners have the ability to call powerful spirits called Aeons, which they can command to fight on their behalf. However, each Summoner must visit (pilgrimage) various temples distributed around Spira and pass the "trials" in order to earn the right to call the spirits.

Character development is through a unigue system called the sphere grid. The sphere grid system will be confusing at first. But you will quickly learn how to use it. I suggest acquiring a strategy guide, which you can order here at Amazon. That might help you learn how to use the system without much hassle.

The battle system is rather traditional. Characters either hack, slash, bash, cast spells, etc. Once in a while, after building up, a character can unleash a powerful attack called an Overdrive. However, there is little variety in the types of attacks the characters can do. If you like to hack, slash, bash, and cast spells, then I would recommend The Legend of Dragoon as a better alternative.

My one complaint against this game is the sheer amount of repetitive random battles. You cannot walk Tidus for more than thirty seconds without triggering a battle. I saw very little sense in fighting the same enemies for the 20th time, all in the span of an hour. Basically, time filler. And, these random battles break your concentration away from the story and takes away some of the appreciation you might have in the fairly decent plot. I recommend this to the more energetic gamers out there who may not necessarily be looking for a complex story in their RPG.

The serie's beautiful entrance into PS2

One of the most popular RPG and game series ever has hit the big 10, a rarity among the gaming industry. Also rare is the fact that each one has been GOOD. So when the series made the jump from Playstation to Playstation 2, how would it celebrate its milestone? By creating beautiful graphics, controversial changes and don't forget the graphics.

Story: Tidus(pronounced Tee-dus), is in a city called Zanarkand doing a Blitzball tournament(a popular sport). Soon Sin, a monstrous beast destroys the city and Tidus gets swept away. Now he's in the same world but different time meeting people who've banded together to stop Sin.

Graphics: Holy crap! There's SOO many gorgeous FMV's that it would be awesome to see it on a big screen, or IMAX thing. Great FMV moments including the Zanarkand attack, the group travelling through the city through a holograph and a little romantic meeting in a moonlit pond. In-game graphics are great too, although mouth movements are off. Speaking of which....

Sound/Music: The first Final Fantasy to feature voice acting....and it blows. The characters sound so lifeless as if the actors just read the lines. Tidus sounds like he's a 12 year old immature boy, Yuna sounds BORED and Wakka plays the stereotypical Jamaican. The music isn't bad, but I can't remember any of it, unlike VII's score.

Gameplay: MAJOR revamps. The Active Time Battle menu is gone, in its place, a meter to the side which shows who's turn is it and coming up so you won't have to make rash decisions about whether to cure or attack. You can switch in characters who aren't up to snuff or not adaptable to that enemy: Auron hits the enemy hard but is slow, Tidus is fast, Wakka is the only one who can hit airborne enemies etc.

And there's the completely gone Level system. You know: get so much EXP, gain a level? It's gone. In it's place is the Sphere Grid, a massive spiderweb-like maze that when you gain a sphere level, you move one. It seems great and all but poses a problem: how would you know you're tough enough against a boss if you have no idea if you are? So it's trial and error basically

Despite those minor mishaps, it's got quite a fairly interesting story, gorgeous graphics, and a new spin on the series in case you got sick of the last ones

An engaging romp...but one with a life span.

Final Fantasy X was my roommate's birthday present to me. Knowing how much I loved FF7 and FF8, he gave me this one, hoping as I did that the game would be one he could enjoy watchign as much as I enjoy playing it.

He was right.

The graphics blow everything else I've ever seen out of the water. From the game's opening movie to the shocker-shot ofter the credits, the FMV quality is unbelievable. Gameplay is smooth and solid, with the departure of the ATB system allowing a character more time to decide the appropriate actions to take. And the ability to switch between active party characters at any time in the game makes for increased versatility and enjoyment in battles. I hope other games take note of this, and continue to implement it.

But even the most beautiful game on Earth is nothing without a good story to back it up. Final Fantasy X has one of the best. The archetypal quest story develops whole new dimensions when the cost of victory becomes apparent, first in the form of a sacrifice, then in the form of loss that, while not as tragic as the original price, is nonetheless touching.

Characters make the game, too. Tidus, the hero of the tale, is a little whiny and annoying at times, but generally he's an all-round likeable guy. The same thing holds true for all seven of the playable characters. Each of them, however, do have their little drawbacks. Lulu's cold shoulder could put some people off, as could Rikku's incessant perkiness (remember FF8's Selphie?). But Yuna is the perfect heroine, noble and courageous but lighthearted, and overall, all the characters' good traits outweigh all the bad, and the diversity of personality between Kimahri, Auron, and Wakka (the team's "heavy hitters") will make for interesting combinations when you take them into battle.

Voice-overs replace the text boxes of the previous FF outings, and the voice acting is nothing short of incredible. All the actors obviously took their job seriously, and notable performances include Wakka and Kimahri (voiced by the same actor), Auron, Yuna herself, and brief but touching guest appearances from summoner Belgemine (whose voice is that of a certain princess in Disney's Atlantis). Tidus is the only real problem in the voice-acting...and then, only during emotional moments, where his voice seems to crack in several places.

Music is largely unmemorable for an FF title, but there are some shining moments. The song called "The Hymn of the Fayth" is one that stays with you, as does this game's version of "Eyes On Me," titled "Suteki Na De," or "Isn't It Wonderful?"

The only downside of this game is that the eye- and ear-candy doesn't last. At first, the game is a visual and auditory journey, but the farther you go along, the fewer and farther between the characterization gets, until the characters are reduced to only a line or two every five fights or so.

Still, this is a must-have game for anyone who enjoys a good story, even a short one.

Great Game!

I rented this game, and I'm sorely disappointed I didn't spend the 10 bucks extra to buy it. I've always taken the FF series to heart and this one rates in my personal top 3 games I've ever played. Good story, a little slow, but mid-way you're into the story as much of any of the best FFs.

My top 3 FF's would be FF 7, FF 3(6 Japan), I have played ALL of them, beaten every of the ones that came to the U.S. before being remade. Except one, I was rather young and I only got to the last dungeons Kraken ;/.

Anyhow, this game is great, GREAT STORY! What separates The Great Final Fantasies from the lesser ones and other lesser RPGs, has got to be the story. Sure, I have become to used to gameplay that is exclusive to the final fantasy series, but RTB, mini map, which both are missing and may seem to be tradition, doesn't hurt the game. One tradition I missed was no ending theme :(, I love the ending theme that plays in every FF, I was really scared that they did away with it in FF IX, but was relieved they hadn't, I thought they would surely have kept it for this one... but no.

Sphere Grid is O.K. There's not much customization here as you would have thought. You could give Your physical damage dealers (tanks) white magic or black magic, but then you'd have to give them stats to make them strong enough in it, and then you'd end up having a guy that is no good in phys dmg or magic and he'd just suck ;/. If you wanted, you could make a super uber char like in FF 3, but not until the very end the game. Almost like building a lvl 99 char in FF 3 U.S. It's trademark they do something new every game, but I thought the sphere grid was time consuming for the same effect as lvling in a game like FF 2, where chars were class specific. The sphere Grid ALLOWS you to delve into other areas but you wouldn't want to because you can make your char stronger by just putting it into what he's already good at.

Bottom line, GREAT character development, perhaps the best character development I've seen in a game so far, every character is involved in the cut scenes, something I'd like to see more of in the series. Great story, pulled my heart strings a few times. Gotta love the voice acting at times. There are some really special scenes. Definetely Recommend buying it, it's only 15 bucks now. If you're like me and have waited more than two years to buy it, don't wait any longer, get caught up now, it is definetely worth it. And when you're done you can join me on FF XI. My name is Aegharis on Cerberus, love to chat with any of you FF fans.

When I was a kid I loved the FF series that was back in the nes and then the Snes days and a little later a rom of ff5, but really those where the ff games I played and they were great the best absolutely fantastic...except2 but anyway after that i only played tactics and the the real world forced me away from my precious FF games, in that time the series has undergone some revolutionary changes some for the better and some for the worse. Being that FFX didnt use a levelling system like that of the old games it was quite a shock. personally i dont like the sphere system much because all it really does is spread out single levels over 1-2 moves also without the ability to have all your characters in your party learn magic there are points n the game that lulu or yuna become inordinantly powerful because the are used so often, also while Square would have you belive that the sheres alow for unlimited variation the shperes are entirely linear with a few locked of sections you wont be able to get to until halfway through the darn game. Besides that the voice acting for the game is alright but still it can get really cheesy at points, but for thier first vooiced over game I think the english port was decent, even though tidus sounds like a castrated member of hanson for most of the game. The Battle switching is a nice touch but it wouldnt really be necesary if you could teach multiple people magic. But i suppose Im a [slave] of the old ways and have no wish to change.
Oh yes also the fact that you dont have a world map to walk around on makes me so mad, THAT IS A FINAL FANTASY STAPLE LIKE BOMBS AND CID!!! AND AIRSHIPS...they had all those why cant they have a world map, we all know its ridiculous looking with the giant people walking about on the earth but nobody cares because that is the way it is supposed to be!! for crying out loud.

In conclusion While somtimes change can be good, some of the changes made to FFX are not good. and as a result the game is 50/50 as compared to the rest of the series.

I played this game from beginning to end. I've seen every piece of game, and from what I have experienced, it's a surprise. I recommend you getting this game!

Don't listen to any of those fans or audiences out there about the good and bad to the game, just as long as it's creative and has a great storyline it's good enough for anything. As a longtime Final Fantasy gameplayer, every series has been enhanced in creativety. I've been through the development process, it's not easy. We must support Square for their tedious work in bringing 5 stars RPG into market because I want to play them. Their Final Fantasy series are amazing when it comes to gameplay, creativity, and story development. Please, if you are interested in playing the game, then get it. You won't be dissappointed at all!

i am a vetren of the FF seris, and this game is one of the best- i have play FF2-FFX, and this is the best. the added a new way of leveling up- its called a sphere grid- you get to choose how youre character grow. And you can make him learn other charactors moves.
It is very simaler to FF9 in which certain characters are one class blak mage, theif, assasin, and so on.
this game is simaler, but they can learn other characters moves. As you may guess the graphics are the best. and they stroy line is a bit new, but better and it drags you in- square did a good job of giving you a sense of good and evil, and its more than saving the world- and dosen't go overboard in romance as in FF8, this is one of the best games i ahve ever played- and even if you are new to rpgs- you will have a great time with it

This is a fantastic game!

I rate this game a 5 out of 5 because i was great. It had a good story line, good plot, cool new main character, and got you playing it to the very end. I think if you are a true RPG fan and love the Final Fantasy series this is one you should definetly buy. I do warn you it is a very great game but there are parts that you might struggle on for a while but its still worth playing. If you loved the rest of the series than this one is another challenge that awaits. Even the people who havent ever played the series should try it. This is the irst on I tryed, at first I thought from the looks of it it was going to be boring and pointless to buy. But my cousin said it was a great game and said it is one game you must buy and he usually had good tastes in games so I took his advice and bought it. Then I thought to my self I should of bought this a long time ago. Its great so try it out I loved it. But if you have never tryed an RPG game before id try another one thats a little easier first then try this one.
