You Didn't have to do THAT

Man, was I looking forward to the extent of Square's capabilities for this installment of the series, seeing as how it was moving over to the PS2. However, it seems they went a bit too far with these new capabilities. The voice acting is a prime example: why, oh why, did they have to put voices onto most of the characters? Not only are these voice-overs horribly done, it robs the player of their own, self-imagined idea of the characters. Imagine how your visions of the characters in the past games would be shattered if you heard them speak all of their lines in a high pitched, cheesy tone. What's more, since you can change your name to what you want it to be at the beginning, nobody in the game is going to be able to say your name throughout the game. It really just seems forced and it's not neccessary at all. What's more, it doesn't look like the developers learned their lesson in Final Fanasy VIII: There's singing during several scenes in the game. Now, there may be a few out there who might have actually enjoyed the scene where Faye Wong started singing her terrible solo, but the majority of players, myself included, despised it. I bought this game on the hype of Final Fantasy IX, just like I bought VIII on the hype of VII. It's almost like Square has a pattern of riding on the hype of a good game every other year.
On the upside, there are three good things about this game, and that's the music, the environments, and an improved battle system. Everything else is a step in the wrong direction.

FFX is great - for what it is.

Admittedly, I picked up the Final Fantasy Series at 7. I was not privy to the luxeries of FF 1 - 6, though I intend to buy the PS version of those at some point. Having said that, I am trying to understand why people keep insisting that these newer FF's (7 - 10) are lacking something in comparison to the originals. The gaming world has changed over the past few years - the original versions of FF were for an obsolete console that has been outdated for more than 10 years. I'm not saying that these original games weren't fabulous - they probably were - but comparing today's final fantasy games to the Nintendo version is like comparing apples and oranges. You can't do it fairly. Somebody is bound to suffer somewhere. Graphics have changed, gaming styles have changed, and player mentality and expectations have changed. If you can keep that in mind, than the last few FF's have been pretty darn good. FFX is no different.

First off, this is a pretty game. Very pretty. Squaresoft has yet again made a game you want to look at. The characters are well flushed out and you really get a sense of them thanks to the voice overs (which I anticipated would be incredibly annoying - thankfully I was wrong). The story line is nice because it starts out simple enough but then gets complicated very quickly and you actually have to WORK to uncover the why's of certain things. If you bother to do your homework, it can be quite a trip. If you don't, well - you're going to miss something. The score, as always, is wonderful.

I would recommend this game to anyone, really. Yes it's long and complex, but there are so many little games within the game that it can be a blast. Blitzball, though tough to understand at first, is actually a great game within a game(Almost as addicting as Triple Triad from FF8 . . . ) Go with this game, don't compare it to anything else, because it really IS different from everything else, and you will not be sorry that you went for the ride. It's well worth it.

Happy gaming!

Was this the best game so far or what? Ok so the ending is the most depressing of any FF game so far, but the graphics and the voices and the, the everything, make this so so good. It isnt my favorite FF game (that would be FF2 for the SNES), but it was certainly the most beautiful so far.

The Best Final Fantasy Yet! A Great RPG, and great story...

Little changes sometimes go a long way.

Final Fantasy is the role-playing series that put Squaresoft on the map, and put Sony at the top of the console world. There is a reason for this, the games are so much fun. Like the former Final Fantasies, FFX puts the player in the lead of a group of motley characters as they embark on an epic story, one that usually deals with deceit, war, politics, and overcoming great evil. This series is more focused than RPGs you find on your computer - freedom to choose your characters and path is replaced with a tight, emotionally engaging story that often takes you to amazing places and unbelievable circumstances.

New to the endless battles is the option to use any character in your party, with Active-time gauge to force your decision. This allows battles to be more strategic and thus more engaging, and special skills like Mug and Green Magic, which I rarely used in past games, as now easily available in every battle.

The plot for this FF is the great, and most importantly, it refreshs the old repeatative themes of Final Fantasy and makes them seem new all over again, mainly by creating some wonderful characters. These characters are my favorites of the whole series, and came to life thru some great voice acting. Much of the childish themes that really annoyed me in the earlier games have been replaced by some outstanding performances by older voice actors, and for the first time, some genuinely funny humor has been added to the game.

Most locations are 3D, although there are still a few flat picture backgrounds, but they don't distract too much. The worldmap has been replaced by 3D "roads" for you to traverse. I found this to be a pain, as it makes the game very linear compared to older FFs. Side quests seemed kinda tame, although Blitzball is very fun, a mini-sports simulator, complete with franchize mode.

Overall, the best game on the Playstation 2. Buy it today.

Involved and entertaining like the other FF games. This one stands out in that it draws you into the characters at a higher level. My older boys loved it but they didn't undersatnd how a vidoe game could make Mom cry. I did. This game sucked me in hard! I would recommend FF X-2 if you want a continuation ending of the one you get with this game. It is a continuation of story but game play is totally different.

Final Fantasy X was the greatest Final Fantasy released to date. The sphere grid was one of the most ingenious, surprising, and pivital battle systems yet. The story, characters, and plot devices rival even FF VII. The graphics, due to being the first FF on the PS2, outdue almost every other PS2 game out there today. You need only watch the opening video to discover that. Overall amazing game and more than worth its cost.

Breathtaking

Perhaps the most beautiful game in the Final Fantasy series. (I have yet to play FF7. The store is always sold out. Always.) The storyline was mysterious and beautiful, and I kept playing, wanting to know what happens next. I had fun watching Yuna and Tidus's romance blossom, as well as untangle the knotted web of Spira's politics.

The game map is a bit linear, but I'm thankful for that because I'd be hopelessly lost otherwise. The side-quests are difficult to do without the strategy guide. In fact, without the guide, it's nearly impossible to obtain and power up the ultima weapons.

The graphics are beautiful, the music was awesome, (but the song that they played during the last boss battle was so hard-rock harsh that I was forced to turn the volume all the way down and listen to the radio instead, but that's just one girl's opinion.)

An All-time Favorite!

Words can't express how much I love this game, it's my all-time favorite. I love the battle system and the story and graphics are amazing. The worlds and towns are spectacular, as well. The "sphere grid" for leveling up is great, because after you have learned all of your atributes, you can go on to learn the atributes of other characters. Leveling up is fun in itself. If you don't have this game in your collection, you don't know what you are missing.

You must play this game!

This game so additive and long to. The graphics are perfect, the whole plot of the game is good, and the gameplay is the best! The only problem i had was that you cant skip the videos (especially when you lose and see the video again and some of them are really long!) Therefore this is the best game I ever played.
