Square has blessed the world with some of the best RPG games ever released; FF2, FF3 and Final Fantasy 7. These games were the perfect marriage of character development, gameplay and non-linear world exploration.
Square has also released some painfully tedious RPGs... Xenogears and Tobol come to mind. Unfortunately, FFX has more in common with Xenogears than it does with the FF classics.
The battle system is pretty standard FF fare... it is reminiscent of FF2 and FF7, and is fast and simple to work with. Character building is handled in an interesting fashion which gives the player surprising freedom of choice... it looks strange at first, but thought was obviously given to the system. The graphics are crisp and colorful; some of the strongest I've seen on the PS2 platform. The main characters are expressive and appealing, and the CGI sequences are impressive.
So why 3 stars?
Because I am resentful of being dragged without volition or choice along the plot monorail. To Square's credit, you needn't succeed at every task forced upon you; the consequences of failure can sometimes be inconvenient and pretty interesting. However, these 'choices' are few and far between, and do not make up for the utter lack of open environment exploration.
If any other company had made this game, I'd be singing its praises far and wide. However, this game was made by Square, a company which has done much, much better than this. Here's hoping FFXI will be a return to the non-linear tradition.
Don't bother with this one :(

This game was by far the worst in the series...I'm an avid FF fan since Final Fantasy 7, and have played 7,8,9 to completion. 7, 8, 9 grabbed me in the first few minutes and didn't let me go until I beat the game. This one did not grab me. At all. The voice acting is TERRIBLE...whoever writes a review that says the acting is good is wrong. Period. The game is more like a BAD B movie, the people and scenary are choppy and the plot (or lack thereof?) is disappointing. Go spend your money on Legend of the Black Kat...now theres a good game.
Worst Game EVER For The PS2

Man, this game stinks! Yeah, the graphics are dazzling, but the interaction between the gamer and the game is nil-nothing, nada, zippo. You have no control over what you do during the game's progress, the story line is terribly lame, the cutscenes are numerous and verrrrry long, and the main character which you have to "control" is a boring, pathetic character that makes one not really care if he lives or dies. Truth be told, if this dude would have died when the game started and spared me the agony of wasting one second of my time playing this one, I'd have been forever grateful. Bottom line is don't waste your hard-earned cash on this one-the people who made it should be ashamed of themselves for releasing this montrosity on the buying public. It's that bad.
[BAD]!

The bun looks gourmet but where's the beef? Boring, tedious, asinine, and [weak]! I want my money back!
And I hoped it was the FINAL fantasy...

These series are horrible, people. 10 installments, and there is the 11th one on the horizon!! Oh no, I can't take it any longer! Why can't Squaresoft develop another title, not final fantasy related.
If you still like RPGs, then go with Morrowind, or Neverwinter Nights.
Gaaaaah.

I really, really liked the game. I could think of a ton of positive things to say, the story was good, gameplay was decent. All the positive things other people have been saying.
Then...I spend over two hours fighting some impossible-to-kill monster. (I had to fight him 4 times before I won...maybe I'm just lousy at the game, who knows? But seriously, I'd been doing just fine up to this point.) The game proceeded to the next scene without any opportunity to save. And of course, I'm instantly killed in the next battle, without even a chance to fight. (Two of the monsters literally kicked two of my characters out of the screen with special attacks, and the third proceeded to flambe the remaining character--apparently I was "ambushed".) I didn't even know there was *going* to be a battle. Just brilliant, guys.
Try it again? No thanks. I ended up trashing the DVD and throwing it away. Any game that wants to waste my time like that...forget it. I'm sure the designers thought they were being cute. They weren't. No more Squaresoft games for me.
Actually, make that "no more games that don't let you save at any arbitrary time". I'm totally fed up with RPGs that force you to play for hours because you can't save, and this is definitely one of them.
That, and the weird `random encounter' technique that Squaresoft uses really gets old. I'd much prefer to be able to explore an area without running into yet another random battle with the same three creatures.
Oh Jesus, when will it end...

I recieved this game as a gift for Easter last year, but haven't played it until now. A lot of my peers from school have played all the way through Final Fantasy, so I decided that I should, too, because I'm a sheep like that.
But when I finally did get it, my God, I wanted to die on the spot.
The opening sequence is choppy and the voiceovers are just horrible. Not only are the graphics and voiceovers unbearable, but all the characters are complete stereotypes.
Rikku = Perky livewire of a girl.
Yuna = Quiet, yet has unbelievable power.
Tidus = A dumbass. In general. "I'm so cool! Love me! Durhurhur!"
Despite all this, the music is pretty good, except for it's unbearable repetive-ness. Every time I hear the commercial on TV, I freak out thinking that the Final Fantasy people with bad names and dubs are going to get me.
I swear, just put a gay-ass name on a person and make them walk around mindlessly with a bunch of slutty girls and you get a Final Fantasy game!
Now, to the actual review. I didn't like this game at all. The music is repetitive, the characters lack in originality, and the maps are unbelievably hard to navigate through.
Don't get this game if you can avoid it.
A slight disappointment for me

If you are a fan of the series...you WILL be disappointed in one way or another. For newcomers, this should be an interesting start since Final Fantasy is an excellent RPG series.
-Now the good:
1. I like the new voice feature. Finally is all I can say. Even though sometimes the voices are not in sync, and that Tidus had a whiny voice, I still liked it.
2. Stats system was redone...I liked the new system and how you can select which skills to learn.
3. Graphics are incredible. Same with the FMVs. The storyline is interesting as well. A LOT better than FF VIII (if ya catch my drift)
4. Aeons are cool.
5. Switching players in and out of battle is awesome.
- And the bad:
1. No overworld??? What the heck? This is most linear FF in the series yet. I don't care if it makes it easier for newbies to play (that's what www.gamefaqs.com is for...walkthroughs). I want my overworld and being able to just explore.
2. Blitzball is B-O-R-I-N-G.
3. Too short !!!!!!
4. Too many of the music tracks sound like remixes of the previous FF games.
That's about what I can say so far...even though I didn't this game with all my heart....it is still a good game. I just had VERY high expectations from Squaresoft and the FF series.
Pick a world, Square will take you there.....again!

This game has the best : 1. Storyline 2. Graphics 3. Battle Mode 4.Mini Games 5. Charaters (Yuna is in her braw half the time)Whats different about this fantasy is the way you learn/upgrade abilites to your parties. You use a sphere grid which is like a GIANT PUZZLE. The levels you earn allow you to move spaces on the grid 1 space = 1 level. At first this is confusing but after a while you will get used to it.
Overall this is the best ff on the market.....if you are without a ps2....get a ps2 just for this game...and maybe GTA:3 but FFX will entertain you for the full 130 hrs.
Have Fun!
The BEST RPG game I have played hands down.

I know I wrote a little about this a while back but now I have finished it and can say what the heading of my review says. This for me is the best RPG game out there for PS2 and maybe any console. Visually and soundwise the thing blew me away. The voice acting was so well done that the "off" lip-syncing did not matter to me at all. Musically this blew me away. Gentle and tender or hard and abrasive (Otherworld) made no difference, it all fit. (Suteki Da Ne even made me cry and I am not ashamed to admit this, bring your Kleenex with you) This score is just BEAUTIFUL. The story IS complex but is more and more engaging from the moment you begin until the very end of the game. As to the ending I do not want to spoil it for you so I will say nothing other than the fact that it is VERY satisfying and it is VERY emotionally charged. It gives a real sense of awe, and wonder and accomplishment. It makes you wish you could visit the world of Spira again just to see "what happens next" to those characters and that world. The whole game in my view... in story, music, gameplay, and really endearing characters , presents a world that is easy to fall in love with. I have beaten this numerous times and still do not tire of it. I guess I fell in love with Final Fantasy X too. :) Give it a chance. You might do the same. :)
