An Extraordinary Achievement

When Donkey Kong Country was released for the Super Nintendo in 1994, it astounded the gaming community with its exceptional graphics and stunning sound. Donkey Kong Country was the very definition of a quality video game. Five years later, Rare set the standard again with Donkey Kong 64.

Donkey Kong 64 is HUGE! This is the largest, most extensive video game I've ever played! There are so many different tasks to achieve, so many various weapons and items to collect, and so many moves to learn, that it's easy to become lost or frustrated. I love it!

The graphics in Donkey Kong 64 can be amazing! The lighting and particle effects are like nothing I've ever seen before in a video game. (At first I couldn't figure out why Donkey Kong 64 REQUIRED the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak, but now I do. Trust me, once you see how crisp this game looks with your own eyes, you'll understand!) The frame rate however, drops to a low number frequently. This is the worst problem with Donkey Kong 64.

Since Donkey Kong 64 requires the Expansion Pak, an Expansion Pak is included with every copy of Donkey Kong 64 sold. As a result, Donkey Kong 64 has a price tag of around 70 dollars. OUCH! For those people who already obtained the Expansion Pak previous to the release of Donkey Kong 64, that price may be a bit steep! On the bright side, the Donkey Kong 64 cartridge is painted a pretty yellow, which might make paying 70 of your hard-earned dollars that much more worth it!

One of my favorite features of Donkey Kong 64 is that it INCLUDES the original 1981 Donkey Kong game! Somewhere in the world of Donkey Kong 64, there's an arcade machine which enables you to play the original Donkey Kong, totally unedited. If you want to beat Donkey Kong 64, then you're REQUIRED to play (and beat) the original game! Ingenious!

Stop reading this so-called review and go buy Donkey Kong 64! It's worth it, trust me! ....

May be too hard for some five year olds.

I'll be honest: I rather dislike the whole Nintendo-style gameas a genre (of which this most certainly is a part), and as a PC user accustomed to buying games in [a lower] range it kills me to pay .....for just about =any= video game. But then, I didn't get it for me, I got it for my four-year-old son. Unfortunately, it's too hard for him so I end up playing through the hard sequences. He's just about to turn five, and he'll probably have it mastered by the time he's six. But clearly, it's not for the easily frustrated child (or adult).

Apart from that? Well, the score reflects it. It's expansive, has goofy characters with funny moves, and apart from some points early on which will be unclear to the Nintendo novice, there's always plenty to do. (One surprising bit is a buxom character named "Candy" whose dialogue is all sexual innuendo. It didn't offend me and my son didn't even notice but I can't see an American designer putting something like that in a kids game.)

Anyway, the point is, as far as these games go, this seems to be a pretty entertaining one, and my son likes it quite a bit.

Hooray for the Ape

When the Nintendo 64 was released, my anticipation for this game immediately took place. I had already conquered the SNES versions, and was ready for huge, 3D world of monkeys and bananas. As it turned out, I had a long time to wait. First Mario, Starfox, and Zelda. My patience began to wear thin. Then, finally, it happened. I was in Australia at the time of release, and as all travelers should know...never buy video games in a foreign country, because they won't work. Eventually I sailed back to the United States. And within 48 hours of setting my feet on American soil, Donkey Kong 64 was in my hands, much to my delight. And, oh, did it ever measure up to my standards. Coconut guns, rocket barrels, kremlings, and puzzles. I was in monkey heaven. The colors were bright and whimsical, and characters were goofy and well-rendered. I happily spent hours swinging from vines and solving puzzles. The game is one of the finest released for the 64, with lush graphics (thanks to the expansion pack) and memorable characters. The multiplayer mode adds a whole new dimension to the game, and so do all the mini-games and puzzles. Donkey Kong 64 relies on the age-old Kong vs. Kremling battle that fans of the series can't help but love. And to the delight of the player, several new faces appear, along with old familiar Kongs, like Candy and Funky. I've heard the complaint that it's a kids game. Umm, is that because the game has color and personality? Or because there isn't a gallon of blood churning up from the bodies of defeated Kremlings? Just because Donkey Kong has catchy music and beautiful scenery doesn't mean there's no challenge or appeal for older gamers. This game takes time and patience to complete it thoroughly, and will satisfy most players. For those who are interested in the repetitive destruction of mindless enemies, feel free to play Quake over and over again, and simply ignore games of higher quality.

DK 64 is a very good game. For gamers who liked Banjo-Kazooie or Zelda 64, this a game for them. The graphics in DK 64 are pretty good. I thought they would be better but they are still very good. The sound is excellent, good music and sound effects. The only problem is the camera angel which annoying at times. But otherwise DK64 is a great game. Also, the multi-player is very good and enjoyable. It is like Goldeneye 007 (shooting, splitscreen) or Super Smash Bros (all players in an arena at the same time). DK 64 is a slow at times and challenging in the beginning but once you get the hand of it you start to appreciate it. Also, with the additions of the fruit guns it is a hilarious addition to the game. Dk 64's faults are forgivable considering how much fun it is. Also, getting a free expansion pack is a nice addition. All around DK64 is a very good game.

If you are into hard games, I'll be honest with you, it is hard, and it is similar to the Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooi, but this game is just cool. I have just bought the game about 1 week ago, and I haven't been able to play it much, but I am loving every minute I get to play it. It includes the required Expansion pak, which is just awesome since you can save games. This game is awesome and I am very picky about what games I like. Trust me...This is definately the next game you want to add to your n-64 games!

I really liked Donkey Kong 64. Once I started playing, it was hard for me to stop. It was good that you needed to go back to the first levels once you get more kongs. There are many goals, so you don't get bored. Once you finish one goal, you go onto the next, or you have many at the same time. Try it out!

The best N64 game yet!

DK64 combines the best of Zelda and Super Mario, with lots of side games, bonus levels, etc. There is so much to see and do in this game that you won't beat it in a week, much less an afternoon. It's challenging enough to keep adults playing, but not so difficult that kids won't enjoy it as well. Graphics, sound effects, and music are outstanding. Definitely a must-have game.

Slight disappointment from Rare

Everybody, I mean EVERYBODY said that this game was Banjo-Kazooie clone, except that its bigger. That got me excited, because I really liked Banjo-Kazooie, and the only thing bad about it was that I wanted more. What people told me is sort of true, yet sort of isn't. Don't be fooled: this is not as fun as B-K (at least in my opinion). There is way too much repetition in this game. Since each character can only pick up items of their color, you have to do a lot of backtracking. Its a big pain to find all of Donkey's bananas, then go back to get Diddy's, then go back to get Tiny's, and so on. The mini-games are pretty fun, they add a little excitement to an otherwise monotonous game. In fact, one of my favorite things about the game is that it has the complete original Donkey Kong arcade game.

I know, I'm pretty harsh on this game. That's because I expected more out of it, maybe because its from Rare, or maybe because of the hype. But I do play it a lot, so it must have a decent amount of entertainment value. However, at times it almost feels like work. Its not very hard, just very repetitious. Unless you are a big platform fan with a lot of time on your hands, I'd stay away from this.

son loves it

Our 4 and half year old loves it. The game is easy enough for him to manuver but challenging enough that mom and dad enjoy the game when he needs our help. He can go at his own pace and in other areas practice the more difficult battles that mom and dad had to win for him. My son loves the graphics and sound effects. The battle arena and mystery games allow him to have fun with friends and family. A older child will find the game challenging. Our only problem with the game is that we have to make him stop when his time limit is up.

Biggest Game I've Ever Seen!

The second of Rare's Big Three is a massive game. With 25 golden bananas to collect in each level and a total of 3500 regular bananas(which don't all have to be collected), this game will take at least 30 hours to finish with no players guides. The graphics are incredibly detailed thanks to the use of the expansion pack. All the textures and terrains are rich and incredibly detailed. The character polygons are very smooth and rounded, and the frame rate never slows. Gameplay is confusing at first, but the controls are quickly learned. You get ample time to practice your moves before the first level. Overall, the game is very good. Everyonce and a while a camera angle can screw you up, but it only occurs about 5 times the whole game. If you have some free time to spend beating a great, and sometimes humorous game, buy Donkey Kong 64.
