This game is great. Including all the aspects of a classic adventure game. Incredible graphics and several challenges to meet.
You start the game with one monkey, Donkey Kong. Throughout the game, you pick up 4 more monkeys (Diddy, Tiny, Lanky, and Chunky). And you are to gather 201 golden bananas along with several "extras" including magic fairies which hide throughout the game. At the end, you battle King K. Roll where all 5 Kongs team up to defeat him. The 2 most surprising parts of the game were the arcade games from the 80's. You get a chance to play the original Donkey Kong arcade game and Jetpac, an arcade game to boost your overall percentage (Which can total up to 101%)
The only downside to this game is that is is impossible to beat without getting some online info. or buying a strategy guide, as I did. I was amazed at the things I had missed in the first level where I didn't use the guide. Without a guide or some other help, this game is useless because it can't be beat. And the official strategy guide isn't the greatest. Sometimes it clues you into things but doesn't tell you how to achieve your goals. All in all, a great game, I encourage you to purchase this one. Especially if you liked Banjo-Kazooe or Zelda.
Rare does it again...

Where to begin? DK64 is flawless. From the addictive gameplay to the beautiful graphics, Rare got everything right. The story is simple(naturally; there's only so much you can do when the characters are apes). You begin with Donkey Kong alone. It seems King K. Rool is determined to destroy your island. He's kidnapped the other four Kongs(Diddy, Lanky, Tiny, and Chunky) and has placed them in a series of cages throughout your isle and within his ship. You'll free them one by one as you go through the first half of the game and use their combined talents to complete the last half. Along the way you'll need to find as many bananas, golden bananas, blueprints, and fairies as you can.
The DK Isles serve as a central hub, allowing you access to eight individual areas. They are, in order: Jungle Japes; Angry Aztek; Frantic Factory; Gloomy Galleon; Fungi Forest; Crystal Caves; Creepy Castle; Hideout Helm. Before each level you'll have to visit K. Lumsy, a huge Kremling imprisoned by K. Rool. You see, each level contains a key that will unlock part of K. Lumsy's cage, and every time you deliver a key he'll open the entrance to the next level(note: it's possible to enter Gloomy Galleon before beating Frantic Factory). Each level(including DK Isles) contains five golden bananas, a blueprint, and a banana medal(earned by collecting 85 out of 100 regular bananas) per character(the DK Isles have no regular bananas; Hideout Helm has nothing). That's 200 golden bananas, 40 blueprints, and 40 banana medals. There are also 20 fairies(required to get the 201st golden banana) and 10 crowns. Oh, yeah. There's also a pair of coins that you have to beat the original Donkey Kong arcade game and Rare's first game, Jetpac, to earn. Would it be redundant to say that this game is huge?
As I said earlier, the graphics are incredible. Not only is DK's Island huge in terms of sheer area, the individual levels are very detailed. The apes and Kremlings aren't bad, either, but when you're fighting any of the bosses you'll understand why that Expansion Pak is required. The best scene, however, is the ship coming into port after you activate the lighthouse in Gloomy Galleon(the dynamic lighting here is unbelievable).
Needless to say, if you like adventure games, DK64 is tough to beat. The gameplay is fun, but never overly difficult and the graphics alone are worth the price of admission. Try beating this with 101%(you'll understand when you see the game selection screen), on your own(no walkthroughs!), and see if you can do it in under 40 hours(my time was somewhere between 47-48 hours). Enjoy!
Another Excellent Donkey Kong Game

My mom bought this for me for my birthday when I was turning 10. It comes with the only Donkey Kong 64 which is probably the biggest platform game of Nintendo 64. It has great graphics and the music matches each world perfectly. I love how you have to use each of the 5 characters to beat the level instead of just picking your favorite. Each character brings different strengths to the table and have different weapons, moves, and instruments. The boss battles are clever and creative and the final battle against King K. Rool is one of the best in all of video games.
best Donkey Kong game so far!

Apes, monkeys, gorillas - you name it, are very interesting animals since their easy ability of scrambling on the ground, climbing up trees, swinging between them using lianas and having long arms and legs doing various other tricks with. These movements have been used in many of the Donkey Kong games, but probably not as good and funny as in this game. Here you meet up with some old characters like Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, but also new faces are seen. And for the one who enjoy exploring different landscapes, locating special things in order to complete the game - just like Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie - this game will surely be much appriciated. Besides of the movements normal apes does, can many more things be performed by the characters. All the different apes have a certain gun and movement that only they can use and together the apes use all their specialities in order to complete the game. The beatiful nature, the melodic background music, the tough SFX sound, the cool way all the characters have been designed and the versatile gameplay in the game will surely captivate any 3D Platform lover!

I think DK 64 is the best N64 game I've ever played!! It has great levels, different characters, and super fun bosses!!! I think the most fun thing to do is to be Donkey Kong or Chunky, jump into their barrels, and whatch the kremlings scurry!! it is so funny... especially when you chase around a kasplat or those fat pink guys!! I think the most fun thing is when you get enough banana fairies to play all the bosses you've defeated!! I especially like the crystal caves boss (Army Dillo) and the Creepy Castle boss (Cardboard K.Rool)
I have a tip on how to defeat Cardboard K.Rool easily without losing any kongs!! To do this, you need to break off both his arms. That is pretty easy. When he starts to jump around saying "woohah" or something like that, It gets hard doesn't it? The trick is, wait until he shoots lasers the second time. Go to the cannon directly across from him and wait. He will eventually start jumping around. Listen for the second "woohah", then as fast as you can, dash for the cannon... and he should be right in front of you. It may take practice, but you'll get the hang of it.
There are only two things i don't like about this game... The stupid Frantic Factory boss, and the stupid beaver bother. The boss, the Jack in the Box creature is often called the Giant Junk in the Box. There is nothing fun about defeating him at all. I hate beaver bother so much because it is almost impossible to win. The one in Frantic factory is kinda easy, but when you reach Creepy Castle, it's pure torture!! The poor klaptrap has to push 15 or so dumb beavers in the hole, and I can barely get in any. I attempted to get all 201 golden banannas, and I got all of them except the beaver bothers in Creepy castle, The rabbit race in Fungi forest, and Lanky's sliding beetle race in Crystal caves, and Diddy's robot pirahna in Gloomy Galleon Other than that, This game is super fun and very enjoyable!!

This game is close to terrible, i as a teeanager, and gamer am quite dissapointed at the quality of the game. It lacks all the magic (and music) of the original SNES classic. It is way to long for the amount of interest it awakens in the gamer. By the time I collected my first banna i thought it was mediocre, but when i found out i had to collect about 200 bannanas i just quit. Also, it's to restricted; for example: You can use the rhino, but only during 5 seconds of the game, what's that all about? And you can't use any other animals. Besides, the cart scene is terrible when made 3D. I only recomend this game (and that is slightly) to the people who haven't played the SNES version, maybe they can see something good in it, but if you've played the last version and then play this you'll compare both and then you'll realize that this game [is awful]!
Average, and certainly not the next Mario Brothers or Zelda

I have just recently started playing Donkey Kong after having just solved Zelda (the Ocarina of Time) and Mario Brothers. I read all the hype about Donkey Kong and figured that it would be better than both Zelda and Mario, however, I don't think that it is.
While the graphics ARE fantastic, but the action and puzzles are rather average. In Zelda, the combat was intense and the puzzles were often difficult, but as you worked your way through the game you really felt a sense of accomplishment.
For Mario, again, the "world" seemed connected, your goal was to recover the coins, just as DK you have to collect bananas, however, the action and puzzles in Mario Brothers was much more challenging. While Mario has the same premise as DK (i.e., collect coins or bananas), DK just isn't that challenging. However, what DK lacks in challenge is made up in quality of graphics and the length of the game.
I find that DK challenge level is aimed more at 10 year-olds who may find Zelda too challenging without a clue book.
Maybe I am just jaded because Zelda was such a good game, but I don't think DK is that great.
The one thing that I do like in DK is that you do gain skills and equipment by gathering coins and banana medals, etc. That was the strong point of Zelda (the acquiring of new and better equipment). I also like the fact that each banana can be found in a relatively short period of time and you can save immediately. This allows for short game sessions that actually mean something (i.e., you are still progressing towards your goal). I have found that if I only play for about 30 minutes a night I don't get bored with the simplicity of DK.
Boring and difficult

I actually owned this game far longer than the 2 first SNES Donkey Kong Country games (a couple of years), but I was scared of trying them out because I never liked this game.
First of all, I was so dissapointed with the graphics. The SNES game had graphics that was way ahead of its time, instead of flat looking sprites the sprites looked like 3D characters. Very detailed backgrounds, areas and monsters. In this game, Donkey Kong completely lacks any fur details, he looks like he was painted in paint.
The camera system is awful and makes the game difficult. Imagine you just climbed a tree, the camera is showing you from the back. You jump onto a wine - WHOMP! - the camera changes the angle so you can't see the next vine because you are shown from the front, so you have to jump "blindly" and hope that you catch the next wine.
This camera problem is constant, and makes it difficult to do simple tasks
like killing monsters, just as you attack the camera spins around.
I remember years ago when I played the game with my family, there was a boss that the girl-monkey had to defeat. It was some jack-in-a-box and she is suppose to fly to different platforms. But when she flies, the camera spins around and you often end up dying because you miss the platform.
We were so frustrated with this boss we never were able to defeat it.
It surprises me that this game requires an expansion pack, I noticed severe slowness on the first boss. Everything moved in slow motion and made it almost impossible to defeat the boss.
Instead of the fun of jumping around, climbing stuff and getting help of your animal friends, jumping and rolling on enemies has been replaced with a smashing system. Donkey Kong is so slow he takes damage just TRYING to hit monsters.
The animal friends are gone, I know the Rhino was still there, but he wasn't there enough for me to remember it.
I also didn't like the gun weapons, it's almost impossible to aim!
There is some humor in this game, but not enough to make me want to complete this utterly boring game. Get the first SNES games and don't bother with this one.

Donkey Kong, is one of the greatest gaming characters every to grace the face of the Earth and when I got this game I was not disappointed for a minute. The minute I began playing the game, I knew that Donkey Kong truly did belong in his place on the Nintendo 64. When I first bought the game I was cautious about the game as it seemed like another recycled game brought back from the dead simply to make money. When I played for a few minutes, I quickly ate my words. The game is great and fun to play with six different "Kongs" to play as, each with their own individual style in all forms of gameplay, but this just adds to the variety of fun the game truly offers. The graphics are great calling upon the expansion pak in order to show this game in all of its graphical glory. The game was designed perfectly with fun totally in mind and it pays off incredibly, this is one of the game that makes you want to keep your Nintendo 64 up and blazing despite the new systems out there. Buy this game and you will not regret giving Donkey Kong a home on your N64.
Great Game!

This is definitely one of the best games there are for N64. Great graphics, sound, gameplay! Multiplayer mode is also very fun.
