Game of the millenium

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 16 / 17

I played Donkey Kong since its first generation in early eighties. DK64 is definitely the best 3D game I ever played (I've completed 25% of the game as I'm writing this review.) The game strategy, 3D game quality (lightings, water effect, DD surround, mokey's actions ...) and hidden surprises are all very enjoyable. Especially when you CAN plan the FIRST gen Donkey Kong embedded inside the DK64, what a pleasant experience. The designer have so many cool ideas that just cannot make you leave the joystick.

Best DK game yet, One of the best Nintendo 64 Games!

This game is absolutely great! Rare put a lot into it. The graphics are beautiful, and the characters are very cute, which is one of the greatest things about nintendo (and why play station players don't seem to like it)

The controls take getting used to, like any game, but it was easy - they are configured just like Mario 64. The only complaint is it seems like you have to hold down the R button most of the time. but there are a lot of moves you can make. And new moves you have to buy!

Each level has a different theme, and there are a lot of mini games and bonus rounds to break up the constant search for bananas and coins and bananas and items and more bananas. The game music is good, like upbeat Zelda (another winner). BUT the opening rap is so ridiculously pathetic, that after you laugh at it, you'll be singing along with it every time.

This game is great for adults and kids too, because it's not very violent. There's lots of stuff to do, but it's not like a very involved, difficult quest like zelda or final fantasy, but it is fun, and you just want to keep playing!

Pretty Good

Although a little overwhelming at times the game keeps a fast pace and, assuming you're the type of player that enjoyed Mario and Banjo-Kazooie, you'll love this game and you won't get bored any time soon. If you're not that type of player don't even bother.

A good successor to Mario 64

I have to say that I'm impressed. This game turned out to be a worthy successor to Super Mario 64. It's very similar in game play mechanics, but its multiple characters add lots of variety, (even if you are playing the same level five times.) The expansion pak being included is a nice touch as well. The expansion RAM, is not for saving games, though. It makes for better graphics and a faster framerate.

I tried a customer version of the game where you could try beating some bosses, enemies, and bonus levels. And all I can say is WOW. This is a really cool game that anybody would enjoy. It has terrific handling, the bosses were not too hard and not too easy to beat, and the bonus stages were lots of fun. The game design was beatiful and the characters are fun. I have already received my copy (gotta wait till X-mas) and I cant wait to try out the real thing!

If you like RPG games like Zelda and Goldeneye, you'll love DK64!

Good, but frusterating at times

Ok, you know if you own a Nintendo 64, you either have this game or are getting it. It is a very good game, but it is so huge that at times you feel, well, confused maybe. With five characters, and 200 golden bananas, among many other things, to collect, this game is huge. It will take a gamer hours upon hours to beat. I've been playing for 11 and a half hours so far, and I'm 33% done, with only 69 of 200 bananas. Sure, it's very fun, but it could have been better. The camera has occasional glitches, and there is minor slowdown, but with so much to do, you'll hardly notice. At times, DK64 can seem frusterating, but that's just due to its size, and if you have pleanty of time, and don't get frusterated easily, go right ahead and get this game. After all, this is from Rare and Nintendo.

Donkey Kong - The challenge will make you go banannas!

In Donkey Kong 64, you get an expansion pack, which already makes the game a good buy, but the game is huge. It takes hours to complete, so I wouldn't recommend it for younger kids, but the gameplay is great. There are five Kongs in this game: Donkey, Diddy, Tiny, Lanky, and Chunky. All of which have different powers which are needed to earn Golden Banannas to unlock levels. Besides the game's challenge, You also need to complete two classic Rare Games: Jetpac and the original Donkey Kong. This game supports an OK multiplayer, but it is not as addictive as the game, and the controls would be to confusing for someone who is not familiar with the game. All in all, this game is a good buy.

rare does good job

Rare does an excellent job once again. This game isnt as serious or tense as Goldeneye, but it is as fun. The game is a well balanced mix of fun and challenge. It is like playing a cartoon. The biggest assets are the various little noises for every action and colors and graphics. But the sense of humor and fun makes this game stand out. No other game Ive played has so many little humorous, fun jokes or pictures, or sounds. Even the instruction booklet is funny. It is a larger than life cartoon that doesnt stop at being another puzzleadventure game. Little things make this one big great game. Buy it and be thrilled but be prepared to spend a lot of time trying to conquer all of it.

Awe-inspiring gaming fun

Ever since the original DKC series ended on the SNES in 1996, gamers have been waiting for the DK gang to make their grand appearance on the N64. Finally, towards the end of the 64's life span, Rareware finally releases the highly-anticipated DK64, a game which by all means should have blown the competition away. In truth it comes very close, but just misses that important spark by a millimeter. If you have ever-played Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie, then you know what to expect. For players such as myself who joined the Nintendo bandwagon late, I'll explain. Unlike 2-D adventure games, now you must collect a certain amout of something, which enables you to open a locked door and advance further on into the game. Players now have to be as smart as they are as fast with their trigger fingers if they want to make it to the final showdown. DK64 gives us brilliantly huge worlds to explore, far larger than anything we've ever seen before. The use of the included expansion-pak makes for cool light shading effects and shadows wherever you go. The bananas which you must collect to advance through the game can be done so by finding them or by playing intricate minigames, all with the patented Rare/Nintendo polish. At every corner of every level, you'll find a task that needs to be accomplished, an item that needs to be collected. This isn't a game that you can finish in a day, or even a week.

Where the game bogs down mainly is that theres way too many things to collect. Other games stop at 100 of certain items, bu DK64 sets the goal at 200! This gives you a massive challenge, and may be what you need to amuse yourself on a rainy day, but 200 of anything is a lot to ask for. While the areas are impressive, there is noticible slowdown in certain sections, such as when a real-time pirate ship enters and starts circling a lagoon. Couldn't the expansion pak have fixed this problem? I guess not. Bonus games range from fun and fantastic to frustrating and furious. And the music...well don't expect the same high quality tunes of the original DKC series, but rest assured the music is very fitting with the games atmosphere.

So, is this game worth the buy? If you're new to this genre, yes. DK64 is the biggest and baddest on the block, at least for awhile. If you need an expansion pak, this game is also a good buy. If you've played Mario and Banjo and are looking for more, then this is ALSO a good buy. In fact, the only people i do not recommend this game to is those with little patience for collecting items. 200 items. Still, when you get down to it. This is still some pretty solid gaming here.

Engrossing, detailed and challenging

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 7 / 7

I admit I initially put off this game because I thought it was impossible and too overwhelming to master the amount of special moves for each character. Also, I unfairly started to compare it with Zelda. But then, after a bit of game play I started noticing that this game was in a league of its own. I couldn't believe the amount of levels, detail, mini games, sound effects, music and challenges it had. In fact, this one turned out to be the most engrossing and detailed game I have ever played.

The challenges never stop. If you get stuck somewhere, just grab another character and you'll have a whole new adventure, and probably will be what you need to get the other one going. Yes, it is sometimes exasperatingly challenging, but the rewards for game completion are great.

Controls: As in any other game, you will get used to the controls, although in this one, it takes a while longer. The designers of this game did a good job of timing the introduction of new special moves, so you will have many chances of mastering each and every one before obtaining another.

Graphics: In terms of graphics, this game is just beyond compare. The character movement is smooth, the scene intros are excellent, the levels are just incredibly colorful, detailed, and imaginative. Game levels get increasingly deep and complex as the game progresses and complexity grows even more as you start rescuing characters (kongs).

The characters: There are five kongs at your disposal: Donkey, Tiny, Diddy, Lanky, and Chunky. Every kong is required to complete the game and each one has its own set of special moves, abilities and weaknesses. You will be required to take advantage of each character's traits in order to succeed in this game. The characters have a common set of weapons and inventory for their quest, but each character's weapon is activate particular door switches.

Game play: Each of the eight levels requires every kong to collect up to 5 golden bananas, 100 "regular" bananas and a blueprint. There are also 2 fairies and a battle crown to collect, and all of these items are devilishly scattered and hidden around the current "world" or level. Golden bananas and fairies are also hidden around the main islands, outside the regular worlds. Fairies and battle crowns are used to unlock some hidden stuff outside the main adventure. You also have old Gran'pa (Cranky) to provide you with additional skills (and cynicism). Also you will find many other friends and allies to help you succeed on your quest. Many players might attempt to collect all the available items in sequence, but this is not required, and also no possible until you rescue the other characters (The regular bananas and blueprints are color coded for each character, and the golden bananas can be collected only by the corresponding kong).

The only requirement to complete a level is to beat the boss and obtain the boss key. Beating the boss is an independent effort, and every level will assign a different kong for this challenge. A pre-determined amount of regular bananas have to be fed to the to the piggy character (I forgot his name) for him to gain some weight and allow his heavier friend to reach the key and open the door to the boss arena. As mentioned before, although you can try to collect all of the available items, it is not strictly necessary to finish the game. If you are obsessive, you will find this item-collecting very frustrating and probably will end up throwing the cartridge away. But if you are concentrated in completing the adventure (rescuing all your buddies, liberating K.Lumsy, and knocking out K.Rool) you will find out that you don't need to collect each and every one of them. In fact, you can complete the game with a partial inventory, and later on take the challenge of collecting the rest of the bananas, fairies and crowns. This alternative gives this game a big replay value.

Of course, collecting enough golden bananas is necessary to reach other levels, but you will find out that the amount required is easily accomplished. In terms of regular bananas I recommend trying to find as many as you can early in the game as they provide banana medals, which you can use to obtain additional special moves. Also, concentrate on the blueprints, which will provide you with valuable time to complete the last level (yes, the last level has time constraints).

Sound: The sound effects and music are not impressive; the music tends to get in your nerves when you are trying to concentrate. Fortunately there are sound control options in the game where you can reduce or eliminate music or sound effects.

Options: The cartridge provides the option to skip level intros (very handy), adjust camera settings and set screen size. There are also multi-player options (battle arenas where players compete against each other) and mystery options (I'll let you figure these out).

Overall value: Pluses: Multi player options, Challenging game play, deep levels, endless mini-games, hidden games, beautiful, clear and detailed graphics, excellent replay value

Minuses: Learning curve, some frustratingly difficult mini-games, difficult to control camera angles.

Skill Level: Medium

This game is 100% recommended for its overall value.
