Reviews can only tell you so much, and most of them either say that the product is really good or really bad. There is no substitute for the real thing.

That said, download the demo of this game. Its a very good representation of how the game plays out, and also how the game will perform on your system. It includes a tutorial section for easily picking up how the game works, and then one full mission from the game. Its quite large at 130 megs, but get a program like GetRight and that won't be a problem.

IMHO, the game rocks. one of the most original and replayable games out there. If I wanted to reply the game, I could play it in an entirely different way than I played it the first time. Most games that are "replayable" just adjust the difficulty to make the enemies have higher hit points, and the damage that your character takes is doubled or tripled.

One last note: the demo only contains a small portion of the story, which is one of the best that I've seen in a computer game. The demo is mainly for seeing how it performs on your system, and if you enjoy the gameplay.

I enjoyed it. Play System Shock 2 when you're done with playing Deus Ex (SS2 is a little better in my opinion).

The (almost) perfect FPS/RPG

This is perhaps the only FPS that lets you accomplish goals however you want to. Use stealth, use force, use tactics - whatever you want. The combinations of skills (wow), augmentations (oh my), weapons (cooooool stuff), weapon upgrades (holy hell), information gathering (whats a Greasel and why is everyone running in terror?), and choice of tactics (like selling drugs for info) is absolutely endless.

Some of the augmentation upgrades are absolutely sick. Imagine blowing up an enemy missle before it even leaves their launcher or being able to look through walls. Sick, I tell you. Careful, though. Some of your enemies have similar upgrades, too. The fun is finding out which ones.

With all these upgrades, you can still change your tactics depending on the situation and solve each goal any way you want. One mission you can just waltz in and kill everyone. Another, you just sneak past them and pick locks. Then the next one, you hack their security systems, unlock all the doors, and turn their gun turrets against them. Maybe another one you will flood the ventilation systems with poison gas. More likely, is that you will end up doing all of these things in one single level. You can do anything you want to - including running amok and killing NPCs. Boy is that fun. That's right... yeah... shoot her... she wouldnt sell you that newspaper... she deserves to die... hehehe. Enemy AI is good, but not Unreal quality. Of course, the enemies do so much more than in Unreal so a few little quirks are to be expected and dont bother me. Believe me, its plenty challenging as it is. The first time you discover that certain enemies blow up when killed... well... lets just say you'll learn how to use the sniper rifle.

The story is good and can be as deep as you are willing to search for. Talk to everyone if you want to and find the whole story. Search every nook and cranny to see secrets. Read every file. Browse other people's email. Read every book and newspaper. Overhear conversations. You dont have to do all that, but you can. The story is really cool and pretty deep, but a tad predictable for this genre. Then again, we who enjoy it dont really care. The story is still long and involved. I also give the story bonus points for creating suspense and paranoia without using demons. It seems wierd, I know. An FPS without demons? Whats this world comming to?

Word of warning: this is full of little bugs. Graphical glitches are scattered throughout this one, but a downloadable patch is on the way (so you "eye candy only" types wont have any excuses). Plus there is the afore mentioned AI quirks. Im betting Eidos pushed Ion Storm to get it out too soon. Im sure the patch will solve alot of those problems.

Bugs and all, this game is amazing. I havent gotten this engrossed in a game since Zelda for the SNES. This game will set new standards in the FPS and even Role Playing genre. Its already blurred that line forever. Im excited by all the possiblities of other companies who learn from this game. Buy it. Be a part of history.

Definetly a Game of the Year

Deus Ex has an excellent 3D engine-the Unreal Engine-which gives beautifully 3D rendered images that will win your heart. Though its 3D renderuring is not what I really like about the game.

One thing that I found most interesting was that there 'is' a story in the game. Most 3D shooters are just running around with a gun blowing things to bits, who knows where the enemy came from, who cares as long as you can kill it and see blood. With Deus Ex it's different there is an excellent story of government conspiracies and revenge. By the end of the game when you think about the first mission you'll wonder how it all happened.

The soundtrack for the game is excellent at amplifying the emotion in the story.

If you're used to 3D shooters such as Quake (I, II, or III) and Unreal Tournament you probably really ... at this game, at first. Don't expect to run into a room full of soldiers and blow them all to bits. But don't let failure discourage you from this great game, you'll eventually learn tactics.

I'VE NEVER HAD THIS MUCH FUN PLAYING A VIDEO GAME!!

I've played a lot of PC/console games in my life - a lot of RPG's and a lot of FPS's - but I can tell you without a doubt, this one is so much fun I can hardly wait for Deus Ex 2. While being far from perfect, I found it so addictive I played it five times! What makes this game so much fun is unexplainable. It just sucks you in and won't let you excape. From the moment I got my orders on the dock at Liberty Island in the first mission, my curiosity wouldn't let me stop playing. Take my advice - If you buy this game, be prepared to not want to do anything else but play it. Like I said, I've played quite a few games in my life but I have never - ever - played a game anywhere near this addictive. If you are a huge Goldeneye or Unreal Tournament fan, don't be fooled - this game is not an FPS! It is a FPRPAG - a first person role playing action game. Every single complaint I've ever heard about this game has come from a hardcore FPS fan. Like I said, it's not perfect. The only problems with this game are: poor Direct 3D performance (no problem at all with the D3D patch), poor voice acting at times (something you won't notice unless you don't like the game to begin with), very complicated, very frustrating (yet very good) plot, dumb enemy AI (if you can hide from them for 30 seconds, they give up looking for you), and that's about all the cons - to go along with about a million pros. The bottom line - This game is not perfect but it is still more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Period.

Oh Yeah! One the best games of all time

I used to play games only on the console systems, so when I got my computer recently, I started buying a couple of games for it. One was Deus Ex, which i knew nothing about at the time(or any other game except for tie fighter). This game blew me away. it is like being in your own movie. tons of action, dialoge, and the best part is you get to kill almost ANYONE you see on the streets. I have come across street hookers in the game(every member of society is represented in this game) and either stabbed them to death or set them aflame with my flamethrower. you get to listen to your victims scream, cry out, and even explode on rare occasions. and for those of you who arent sadistic like me, everything you do has consquences. the storyline is similar to a sci-fi RPG, and character interaction is very important. the graphics are very good, and the number of voice effects is astounding. be warned though: make sure you have at least 64 megs of ram and a 3d-accelarator, because this game is POWERFUL. it uses a lot of speed and resources. if you have an old computer, I would advise you to check the minimum requirements before you order it. despite that, though, you will be in for a wild ride. it has rpg flavor, action, and stratagy. but it gets difficult just using a mouse to control your man. I could very well be wrong, but you can't use a joystick of any kind. other than that, it is a terrific game. well-thought out with all the maps, blueprints, etc. of all the buildings/cities. a lot of fun!

I have a Pentium II 400 with the Maxi Gamer RIVA TNT2. When I first got this game it did run slow and would freeze up at the most inopertune times. But the patch is here and now the game works beautifully.

Now more on the game. It is a wonderful blend of roleplaying and 1st person shooter. While the story kind of drags on and the plot is perdictable. I did find game play challenging as well as exciting.

I suggest this to any roleplayer out there.

This game is awesome

I just got this game yesterday, and have to say it is the best game I have played in a long time. It is a futuristic first person shooter crossed with a role playing game, and it is awesome. Just make sure you have a top end system, and a good video card.

Super Duper

Having the Voodoo3 3500, I didn't run into any of the frame rate problems others can have, but most people agree that one way or another this game is amazing. The only other 3Dshooter that could compare in quality upon release was Half-Life. Graphics, sound, animations, story, skill systems, interface and just about everything else were great. A major plus is the alternative endings and the options you get during gameplay. The only minor problem is the system requirements, but if your computer is relatively new, you'll most likely be able to pull through with acceptable FPS.

Thanks to WS and his development team at Ion Storm my skin will soon become pasty white after trying this game. It is very addictive. In this game you play as the character JC Denton. He is a nanoaugmented agent that works for the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO). When I say nanoaugmented I mean to say he has tiny machines working throughout his bloodstream that make him quicker, stronger, and tougher than the average guy. Now that I have given the background I'll tell you about the game. You start at Liberty Island, NY. Your goal is to rescue a comrade and find your way to the top of the statue to interrogate the terrorist leader. The cool thing about this game is you can replay it over and over because there are numerous approaches to beating the game. You can be a hacker, a shooter, a guy that stays in the shadows, or a demolition guy. Your options are to attack the heavily guarded front of the statue or slip in the back in the first mission. This game could be described as a mix of adventure, action and RPG games. The interrogation and plot make up the adventure elements, your view is a fps which falls into the action category, and the interface is RPG derived. You can also customize your character in the different areas of skill: weapons, computers, demolitions, etc. The gameplay is good overall and is the srongest point of the game. The AI is pretty good too, though at sometimes it can be rather dumb. Graphics are excellent as well, but to run this game flawlessly I suggest Pentium 400+ proccessor, 128ram, and a Voodoo3 card or better. The physics can be disappointing at times, you can often throw a chair, vase, flask and it will hit the floor and stick. It won't slide, topple over, or break, it just sticks. The game also features dialogue which many games don't include. The lip-sync is excellent, one of the best I've ever seen. The plot will be conspiracy based and the paranoia has just landed in our summer. Definetly one to pick up guys, I know I'll have my copy.

Why I hadn't heard of this game before I slipped the disc into my computer is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I can understand why a lot of perfectly good games wouldn't ring a bell in my head--I don't read a lot of PC game reviews--but this is something else. This game kept me up at night just trying to figure out one more clue, trying to get by that one really hard jump from the ledge to the decaying platform, or trying to up my guy's modifications just one more notch. The strongest feature about the game is the non-linear story line. Depending on what decisions you make (don't worry, it's not like those Choose Your Own Adventure Books when we were kids), the storyline evolves in different ways. Kill someone, it'll come back to you later. Leave someone alive, same deal. Character development is awesome--you can tweak your character so many ways it's rediculous--but you can't make a Superman, you've got to pick and choose what strengths you want your guy to have. The only drawback I can see with the game is the graphics. They're good, it's true, but they're not great--I think the game's based on the Unreal engine but I'm not sure. Never fear, I never had any problem dealing with only semi-perfect visuals while being enthralled by this title. Enjoy it, I did.
