... could have been great, what a pity !!

I bought this game, thinking to purchase one of the best games for the PS3, in my opinion it is not and I try to explain why here in this review.

Oblivion is a huge adventure, a mixture between a first-person adventure and role-play game. It is an open game; I mean that it is intentionally developed in order that the player is free to choose what to do and how to do it.

You can choose your avatar among a long list of human, animal and fantasy creatures with various powers and characteristics.

You start in a central village where your adventure begins. You are free to enter places, speak with people you meet (they all talk in English); you can fight with weapons, swords, magic potions. You can ride a horse, climb walls, you name it.

This game could have been really great, the graphics environment is extremely detailed, astonishing nice in some places, just try to reach the top of a hill and see the panorama around, really great.

However, there are quite a few major problems that spoils inexorably this game.

1. frame rate: you will notice quite soon that the frame rate is not the best you have seen on the PS3. On top of this, quite often it slows down to 5-6 frame per second, for loading areas (a caption message appears "loading area"). This happens DURING the game, not between levels, quite often while you walk or ride the horse or just without any apparent reason. You can experience noticeable slowing down even standing still, when you turn around or pan.

2. In this game there are a huge number of building and rooms that you can explore. That's great, nevertheless accessing rooms take time, game stops, a still image appear with a loading bar: "loading". Just like those old 16 bit games... if a building has 10 rooms, you have to see the loading screen 10 times! After a while you feel less curious to enter places just because it is so irritating to wait and see the loading screen at every door.

3. Gameplay: enemies A.I. is basic, and so are the moves they do. Fight is quite repetitive and boring, especially if you are fighting in narrow corridors or caves, you will notice the limitations and technical problems of this game.

4. Character animation: your character -and all other characters- animation is pretty low class. Try to press R3, so you can see yourself in third-person perspective, then jump... you will see how rudimental the animation is. While you are in the air your character is frozen unnaturally, just like a flying three dimensional "sprite".

Overall this game could have been a great game, but there are too many technical flaws that spoil the gameplay.

Get this game only if you are really in role-play/adventure games. Better rent it or test it at your friend place. Do NOT buy it basing yourself just on magazines rating, because you can end up like me, quite upset. On a scale 1-10, this game is a 6 or 6.5 in my book.

This game has no on-line capabilities, there are not multiplayer options too.

Why is everyone bent on PS3 vs 360?

I don't own a 360 and I could care less how Oblivion performs on it or a cpu, those posts are irrelevant imo unless you are still up in the air about what console or type of cpu to purchase. After all you are in the PS3 section of the website.

The PS3 offers excellent graphics in HD-top notch, and the frame rates are great, I've experienced zero stuttering. The sound effects and music are superb, especially in surround sound.

The game offers plenty of flexibility when creating a character. Anything that comes to your mind you have a great chance of getting close to what type of toon you can build. For example, I've played a few MMORPGs and I've always seemed to enjoy the petters (summoners/conjuror) I already have the building blocks in place to create just that. So far I'm able to summon a skeleton or an imp to help me in battle and back them up with some offensive spells (fire, ice, shock etc..) I can heal as well. There are literally thousands of combinations at hand to create the looks and play style that suits what you are looking for in a character. You get 7 major skills, which define what class you are and you also get 14 minor skills. There is a nice sized list of skills to choose from...think of all the possible combinations (next up will be a crafty, murderer of a rogue)

Creating potions, poisons, spells and enchanting items/weapons adds another dimension to the game if you're into crafting. There are also houses for sale along with horses to help you get around more efficiently.

Battle is more smooth than morrowind 3 imo. You don't swing your sword 20 times in a row without striking your enemy once. Several of the little annoyances in morrowind 3 have been greatly improved in Oblivion.

The quests are numerous and enjoyable, frankly there seems too much to do but believe me I will get around to doing as much as I can. Quests range from the typical take X item to person A to killing enemies or simply running miscellaneous errands for the guild(s) you belong too. You are able to gain in rank in any of the guilds to open up additional benefits available to you, like enchanting when you reach a certain rank in the mage's guild.

Bottom line, whatever you enjoy in an RPG I'll wager Oblivion will satisfy what you're looking for. I've been playing games since the days of Adventure for the Atari 2600, I currently play WoW (on the back burner for now to make room for Oblivion) and I've also played EverQuest. Oblivion is a top of the line RPG and a must have for the PS3.

One Of The Best Game I Have Ever Played

I have been playing games since I was a kid playing Super Mario Bros. I have owned all the systems (not much of Sega though) and played them alot. When I first played Oblivion, I wasn't to thrilled. Then after you got out of the introduction level I was amazed. I managed to kill someone for fun (don't try the guards or any groups at first) and then it said they a mysterious force was watching me. Then a man came to me and offered me a chance to be basically an assian. I was suprised as usually games tend to make you follow the main storyline, beat it, then have nothing else to do. I soon found out (after being locked away in jail) that there was much more stuff like this. You can even go to sleep on the sidewalk, and if you do the right thing, some one will come up to you and engage you into a side quest. Also if you don't walk around you will miss a lot. From caves filled with bandits, to Zombies, to Goblins you can fight them. Also you can buy houses (and for particualr ones kill some ghosts). Another high point is making spells and enchating items. Even though some times it somewhat difficult taking a soul, it is well worth it. You can then enchant weapons, armor, clothes, etc. and have it for instance Sheild 10% of your body from fire. Or make your Sword drain your oppoents health a bit on strike. Then you can mix spells together to make some deadly attacks. Though it will cost a lot of gold and skills. After playing it for hours opon hours, I wandred about it being the best game ever. I always said Zelda or Mario, but this is the best game I have ever played. No other game has kept me as entrained for this long as Elder Scrolls has done. From the fun of betting the game as a Mage, then going back and becoming a Warrior. Or just wandering around trying to find every little secret held in this place. This game is a must-own for anyone who has time to spend on a RPG Game. Also if you have both a 360 and a PS3, the PS3 already comes with Knights Of The Nine Expansion Pack and is much shorter loading time (360 has long boring loading times, and sometimes quick ones) and better graphics. Unfortunley PS3 you can't buy the amazing Shivering Isles expansion pack. Though Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion Game Of The Year has been anounced for September I think. This will give PS3 the Shivering Isles also, so if you can wait the PS3 is the top choice. If you can't decide between loading and Shivering Isles. Also if you like this check out Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind which is also a great game, owning a slave is so much fun. Get this game, it is the best ever. Coming back after getting into Final Fantasy among some others, I no longer hold this as the greatest game ever. It is still up there though, but how can I possibly say this is better than Final Fantasy VIII for example?

Thoroughly Emersive

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion made me into an instant gamer.

I bought this game on a whim when I bought my PS3, figuring 'Well, it would be silly not to get a game for this thing, even though I'm mostly going to watch DVDs'. Ha! I've spent probably fifty hours playing Oblivion in just a few weeks, but watched only two or three DVDs.

Gameplay is completely emersive. Beautiful graphics and sound, including the alternately gallant and creepy music add greatly to the experience. Fireflies and butterflies float by, steam briefly obscures your vision, glare from reflections dazzles your eyes, and birds sing overhead.

Although I'm a total klutz during fights (I always get the 'look' button way off center so I'm waving my sword at the clouds while a goblin hacks at my knees) with practice I can muddle through. Figuring out the best way to beat certain opponents given my limited skills is part of the challenge and fun.

Hours spent playing this game go by in the blink of an eye. I highly recommend this game, but before you start be sure you've watered the plants, paid your bills, and eaten dinner. You won't want to walk away.

WAY better than the 360 version.

Looks better than the 360 version or PC version (don't believe me, look it up).

Includes the expansion.

Nuff said.

Really, really big, really really broken.

When I say broken, I refer to it as a gamer. A broken system is one that is very easily abused. This one is perhaps the most easily abused system of any game I've played so far (I'm sure someone can point out something worse). You can get to the max level before you actually start the plot. If you're considering it, resist temptation, it makes the plot very hard (monsters level up, not so much the NPCs).

Anyways, the plots and subplots are interesting enough, the world is huge and that's nice, but they could have put a but more effort into it. By effort, of course, I mean "have more than one voice actor for each race/gender". They probably put millions into the graphics, it's the least they can do. At least give the important characters there own VAs. Please?

That's really all I can think of, it is a lot of fun, but again, it's very broken.

Crashes constantly, pure frustration in a disk, zero customer service

128 saves is what uou are allowed. That is not enough. Constant crashing means that in reality, you need to save in almost every "room" to avoid replaying. It is not my PS3 - I own a number of games and this is the only one that crashes. Yes, I know that you can delete old saves. I've had to do that over and over again. Now I'm stuck in a cave system - because when I try to leave the four zones that are part of the cave system, the game crashes, consistently. I guess I have to go back to an old save.

By the way, the promised customer service is a joke. I have called and been hung up on (before a single word gets exchanged) about 30 times now - I hear music and a click a second later.

Other games that are this bad get a patch. The patch is stored on the hard drive. Oblivion has not issued a patch. Don't waste your money on this turkey, just get a fork from your kitchen and stick it in your eye, the experience is about the same. There are lots of good games for the PS3 and maybe the Xbox or PC versions of this game are good, but this turkey would not have been released by anyone who cared about their rep.

Best reason to own a PS3

I've been very patient with the PS3, waiting for solid games to come out since launch, and this is the first good reason to own one(besides Resistance). Graphics are gorgeous, sound top notch, and frame rate impeccably smooth. I've never played the 360 version, but heard there were less detailed graphics, glitches and slightly longer load times. Been playing the PS3 version some hours, and have experienced none of these issues. This game also comes with the expansion, Knights of the nine, which retails for $20 and adds more content to an already deep game. All in all, great game + expansion + better graphics than 360 = a must have game for the PS3

Greatest game for ps3 yet

I got the game the day it came out and i played it forever. The graphics will blow you away and the different combinations you can customize your character is amazing. You can be a theif, mage, warrior and many more. The ps3 version includes the new Knights of the Nine which add 10 hours to the already 200 hour game. On the ps3 the load time are noticbly shorter than the X-box 360. The ways you can interact with other A.I. characters are mind blowing and each character has its own voice acting. My favorite thing to do is to pickpocket someone and steal their key and go into their home. I recomend this game to anyone that has a ps3 and should go buy it.

PS3 Owners have a reason!!!!

This is definetly the top game for PS3 (sharing with Resistance: Fall of Man) Oblivion lets you customize your character from their looks to their skills. This is an important part to this game because what you do can affect the whole experience (I, unfortunately, learned this the hard way) Also this is the first RPG I've seen that's in first person mode which makes attacks much more controllable and is an improvment to the RPG fight system. Oblivion's "Radiant AI" make this a whole new experience with NPCs, for instance, you can walk buy two people who are having a conversation on the street and you can hear interesting things that could end up helping you. Also, your actions can affect how well people get along with you, one experience was after I had 250+ hours and had done everything I felt like doing, I kinda massacred (or atleast tried to) a whole town and had the guards on me, everyone was running away, so as you can imagine I didn't have a very warm welcome the next time a cam back...

Overall this game is the game that any PS3, 360, or PC owner must have. Even if you don't like RPGs or Medieval type games you will still love this game. Over and out
