This has got to be the best RPG i have ever played

When i first played Knights of the Old Republic i thought it looked good, but never imagined that it could be so good! When you first start out the game some parts are Tedius, but never the less fun! In my opinion the game really picked up and got even more exciting when you go to the planet Dantooine to meet with the Jedi council. When you go there you get trained to become a Jedi and you get your light saber and a few force powers.
My favorate part about the game so far is the Jedi showdowns with the lights sabers. If you are really looking for something to do, go to Tatooine where all the fun is. I think i injoyed this game the most because i love good Star Wars games, especially one as good as this. If i had a hint to give any gamer who has played or owns this game, it would be never delete your first game files because i did and half the places i had explored i couldnt remember where they were, and it screws up your inventory. Most likely the stuff you found the first game you wont stumble upon again.

It Really Doesn't Get Much Better Than This in Console Games

Let's get right to the point ... this game is one of the top 2 or 3 console titles produced to date, period. Hype? Not at all. It's simply a wonderful gaming experience start to finish.

Disclaimer -- I am not a huge fan of console gaming, I tend to prefer PC games. However, this game is an outstanding example of what a console game *can* be when it's done right, and boy what a ride this one is.

The game is hard to categorize. It's technically a RPG following the D20 pen-and-paper Star Wars Role Playing Game rules and system presented by Wizards of the Coast, which closely follows the new DnD rules. However, the game plays more like an interactive movie than a typical RPG .. there is combat, but this isn't a predominantly hack-and-slash game. It's a great search, explore, find type of game, with a wonderful rendering of the Star Wars galaxy environment, and frankly the best dialogue and character interaction I have seen in a computer/console RPG-type game. The storlyline and characters are deep, compelling and they draw you in ... you begin to really care about what is happening, about the story that is developing, and it is not the banal story often slapped on to a RPG as a colorful backdrop for endless combat scenes, but a real cinematic-type story.

I would go as far as to say that this game justifies purchasing an X-Box, if you don't own one. It's really that good. And if you own an X-Box, obviously you have to have this game -- it's the best one out there for that, or any other, console platform.

For years the void between computer and dice RPG games has been great, but now we have a game that crosses that void. SWKOTOR is a very well done game that has not only a deep plot driven story line with several characters whose own back stories and personal problems can be explored or exploited for involving side quests. The battle system is one of the the best of all RPGs and is one of the real reasons i say that this game bridges the 'game gap'. In SWKOTOR you will find that you dont really control your character in battle, you just select actions, and that is just what dice RPGs are about, in fact while playing KOTOR, The game system is making diffrent "rolls" to determin random effects that occur during gameplay; These rolls also effect combat as far as damage and accuracy. due to this, THIS GAME IS NOT FOR ALL TYPES OF GAMERS.......so you gamers who get bored taking the back seat and watching something truly beautiful unfold had better just go play some other game.....but for those of you who sit down to play KOTOR, you will find a rollercoaster joyride of drama, action, adventure, supense and twists, not to mention a beauty graphic wise, YOU WILL LOVE THIS GAME, it will become your free time until you beat it-but then youll download the new stuff from XBOX live and play it, and love it.....
TO close my review i must say that this game has one of the best story lines in the Star Wars universe, I would go as far as to say that it is up there with the original 3 movies..

JUST PLAY THE GAME ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great But Not A Classic

This game is addictive and impressive. I haven't played many Star Wars video games but I was pretty excited about this role playing one. Before it came out I had imagined it would be like Morrowind. It is to a certain extent but without the ability to roam at random. It is fun to immerse yourself in the Star Wars universe though. While the game is huge it moves along in a linear fashion. There are a huge amount of side quests to follow however.

The graphics are pretty good I think, with some cool looking special effects during fights and cut scenes. I like the character models better than Morrowind. The biggest problem I have with the graphics is the characters. There are only a few different looking human characters. It seems they used the same models with a few variations in hair and clothes. It's a small thing but distracting to me. The backgrounds are very well done and retain the Star Wars sense of style.

The game has a quality story line that fits well in the Star Wars mythology. If there is one problem I have it is with the destruction of a planet. I thought that was a needlessly violent act, by now we get that the Sith are evil, do we need to see another planet bomarded into space debris? It also took away some of the replay value for me. It isn't worth doing the side quests to help the people of the planet because I knew they were all going to be dead shortly anyway. Of course I came to my senses and remembered it's a game but still...

The game is strangely addictive, I find myself pushing on a little bit further until it's twelve o'clock in the morning. I'm interested to see what will happen next. There haven't been any moments that caught me by surprise or made me sweat, there aren't many dramatic moments really. I remember playing one of the earlier Final Fantasy games on Super Nintendo with my brother and getting excited by a melodramatic moment and that's kind of missing here. There doesn't seem to be an emotional investment. There were a few times I laughed out loud though. There is one funny moment on Dantooine concerning a woman's missing robot and Carth Onasi's remark (if Carth is in the party at the time). As the game goes on however there are a couple of surprises and twists that are unexpected and interesting. There are a few variations on the gameplay that help keep it fun. In one case you have to pick another character to play as and who you pick affects the game play.

Overall this is a fun game to play if you like Star Wars or role playing games, it's like the standard RPG with a science fiction twist and can recommend it to fans of Star Wars, RPGs and science fiction.

Quite possibly the pinnacle of Star Wars greatness.

This is not your regular, out-of-the-shoebox fighting game. Lucasarts does an exemplary job of merging the Shooter genre with RPG. The realism of this game, not only in visual graphics, but as well in player personalities, dialogue, and fighting techniques is astounding. In the amount of time between the release of this game and the current time there has been no games which have come close to the realism or just downright fun experienced. Costing just under $20, you can buy an xbox with this game altogether, as just playing the game will make up for the $150 spent. It really just amazes me how much detail and movements can fit onto one cd-rom. With exploring over 8 planets, free to roam about them everywhere, over 60 sidequests, over 300 different voices with many different dialogues, over 100 different weapons with many effects, and just as many pieces armor such as gloves, belts, implants, arm bands/shields and headgear. The similarity of sound effects, weapons and characters from this game to the movies is unbelievable. Every action you do produces a unique sound effect, such as your lightsaber slicing through the legs of a krayt dragon. Speaking of lightsabers, the many combinations, colors, and upgrades for your lightsaber is astounding. You can have a single lightsaber like in the movies, you can have a lightsaber in each hand causing extra attacks, or a double-bladed lightsaber. Choose from different colors such as red, blue, purple, yellow, and green. Turquoise and orange come for free with the purchase of Xbox Live. Choke an innocent to death, drain the life of your opponents and give it to yourself, call upon the gods to cast a tornado upon your enemies, heal yourself and your party with the force, throw your lightsaber at enemies and watch it return to it's master like a boomerang. You can either run up close to an opponent and slaughter them unmercifully with your lightsaber, shining red for the blood you have spilled, such acts leading you to the dark side, or you can sneak up behind, as an invisible stealth assassin and end their life with your blue lightsaber, reflecting the kindness and unselfishness in your heart as you take the path of the light side. Different dialogues, kind or mean, hostile or calm, dangerous or safe will lead you on your path to the Sith Lord, or the savior of the galaxy and the jedi. Such actions and words will influence the many companions you will encounter on your way, some may try to kill you, some may praise you, some may think of you useful and tag along with you as you continue your quest. Whatever you choose to be, you'll have to live being it and you'll have to die being it. Whatever your actions conjure, you'll have to live with it (even though you can save six different games at one time). Do you even like star wars, would you rather be playing pokemon or Halo instead? Or reading a book? This game is a book, a movie, a game, and basically a life all in itself. If you even rent this game, you be hooked, my advice to you is once you buy this, play this, beat this, then think of this game as alright and you think you should trade it in for ten bucks, don't. About a few months after you trade it in, you'll wonder "What would have happened if I spared the life of the guy that offered to be my friend?", then you'll have to go to Amazon.com, buy the game, and wait 7 days for it to arrive. Buy the game, play it, and hold onto it, while you're at work, bored to deaths, you will have hours of material to think about and discuss. You will not regret it.

A Star Wars game that's actually (gasp) good...

...and not just a half-baked product placement tool. BioWare's decision to make the game pre-date the movies was a great one because it gave them considerable creative freedom, even within the confines of the Star Wars brand.

The biggest reason why KOTOR won over 40 game-of-the-year awards (yes, over 40) is not because you get to swing a double-bladed lightsaber around and use Force powers; it's because of the story! A strong plot is crucial for every RPG, and KOTOR doesn't disappoint. This plot of course includes one of the biggest twists in video game history (all you fans out there know what I'm talking about! If you don't, then go out and buy this game now).

The game's principal characters, while somewhat stereotypical (i.e. Bastila is the condescending socialite snob, Carth is the tough loner with a troubled past, etc), work very well together and have good chemistry, including with you, the created character. For example, if you play as a female character, it soon becomes obvious that Carth develops feelings for you, but he feels slightly guilty because he lost his wife not too long ago. You'll also find yourself acting as mediator when some of your allies don't get along with each other, i.e. Canderous and Carth, because they fought on opposite sides in the Mandalorian Wars that took place five years before. And aside from the character development, the game feels very rich in its "Star Wars-ness" -- for example, some of the names that BioWare came up with for the planets and people feel and sound like George Lucas himself approved them.

Despite what I said earlier in this review, cutting down your enemies with a lightsaber and looking good doing it has got to be one of the joys of KOTOR. I admit that when I first got to Dantooine and was on the verge of becoming a Jedi, I was trembling at excitement that I was going to build my own lightsaber, as I wondered what color I was going to choose.

Having said all that, there are some things that keep this game from getting 5 stars. I felt the game was a bit linear (being able to choose your planets in any order only gives the ILLUSION of open-ended gameplay). I was hoping that the storyline would be different depending on whether I decide to be evil or good, but everything plays the same, save a few minor events and certain conversations. Also, there is a "doorway bug" that causes you to sometimes get stuck when moving through a doorway or narrow corridors. When this happens you can wiggle the thumbstick and free yourself; I've never had any real problems with this bug, but it can get distracting. Also I found moving around in the menu screens to be problematic; you press start to go to the main menu, then you pull the trigger buttons to move between the screens, but often I have to pull the trigger multiple times before the game responds. Also, I'm sure many people would agree that the game's graphics are not up to Xbox standards; even the PS2 is capable of doing better! I don't usually gripe about graphics, but the textures on some background buildings on Taris are downright laughable.

Overall, I have to give BioWare serious Kudos for taking on a daunting task like creating a new Star Wars game, and I sing their eternal praises for actually making it fun. It is not a stretch to say that I bought an Xbox just to play KOTOR (and a few other titles, but that's another story), and I'm glad I made the investment. Hey, stop reading this and go play!

For some of you idiots who are writing excellent reviews for this GREAT game, but giving it a 0, I now officially hate you. Hate. Hate. Hate. This is the BEST Star Wars game EVER, EVER made. And for 'drew from CALIFORNIA,' reviewer #1 if you organize by lowest rating, it is spelled "dumb" not "dome." A "dome" is a geometrical figure having a circular, polygonal, or elliptical base and a generally hemispherical or semispherical shape. Thank you all for your time.

KOTOR: Best Star Wars game ever?

It's just after the Sith Wars, thousands of years before the movies take place. Darth Revan and his apprentice Darth Malak have been causing a stir in the Jedi order, a conflict that threatened to throw the whole galaxy into peril once again. The Jedi send a strike team to eliminate this threat, one of whom is Bastila- known for a meditation skill that can turn the tide in any battle. Malak turns on Revan, and becomes the master himself when Revan disappears. The game opens with you waking up on a damaged ship heading home not long after this conflict.

Quick note: This game uses the classic Bioware RPG systems. You talk through menus, you fight by issuing commands, you level up when you obtain experience. It's a system that most people love, but if you're the kind of gamer who wants direct control over the action- a la fighting games or shooters- you might want to look into the other Star Wars titles.

The good:
-Fantastic story.
-Massive worlds- Each planet you will visit (yes, multiple) is massive and completely detailed. The game's graphics are top-notch, making for some mind-blowingly beautiful vistas.
-Customization- You choose the way your character looks, the way your character develops, and what skills your character will have. When you equip weapons or armor, they actually show up in-game, meaning you may sometime find yourself scrapping better armor for better looks if you're picky about that.
-Star Wars authenticity- Blasters sound right. Ships sound right. Lightsabers are perfectly done. You couldn't ask for more.
-Everything you've ever wanted in a Star Wars RPG- You will become Jedi, you will craft your lightsaber, you will gain force powers. You will see a Wookie, and his name is Zaalbar (okay, so it's not Chewbacca). Tour famous planets, see famous sights.
-You choose- Don't like good? Be bad. Don't like your lightsaber? Change its color and properties, or just use another weapon. The game can be completed with blaster pistols or vibroswords. You will also encounter nine party members who you can mix and match when you go out into the world.
-Seperate endings for dark and light sides means this game is worth replaying at a minimum once more just to experience both sides. If you play through as completely evil or completely good, it's hard to recognize it's the same game for perhaps the final third of play.

The bad:
-A little linear. Endings are different, and you're very free to roam the massive worlds. But in the end, you're being pulled toward one final conflict.
-Loading times, framerate jumps- The game really pushes the Xbox to its limits. Loading times are a little on the lengthy side, and some of the more massive locales can lend themselves to skippy framerates when you get into battle. Very minor annoyances, overall.

The end: KOTOR isn't perfect, but it's close. This is simply the best Star Wars RPG I've ever played. Alongside the Jedi Knight and Rogue Squadron series, it represents the best in Star Wars gaming.

ALSO: Game has a downloadable addition if you have Xbox Live.

Best LucasArts adventure since Full Throttle

If you are a Star Wars fanatic then you must have this game. It allows you to explore many classic Star Wars worlds including the desert planet of Tatooine, the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyyk, the often-mentioned but rarely visited world of Dantooine, Manaan, the source of bacta, and several other unique worlds. All of the game's environments have been beautifully rendered to help you lose yourself in a galaxy far, far away.
Gameplay follows the classic RPG model in respect to gaining skills and equipment. As your character progresses through the game they gain experience points and are able to purchase new core abilities, skills, and (eventually) force powers. Fortunatelly, the game does not follow the classic RPG combat model in that your player does not randomly fall into combat mode every few steps in a dungeon. Instead, there is a finite number of enemies which you encounter as you approach them, but you can usually see them from a distance.
Finally, if you plan to play this game, be ready to dedicate lots of time since it is very deep and well developed. There are atleast eight worlds to visit and each world will take you several hours to explore and overcome. Coupled with required quests and side quests, this game will keep you up for many nights!
