The RPG that set the standard for others to follow....

This game sets a new standard when it came out. With over 400 reviews to testify towards it's greatness. The game is constantly referenced when reviewing similar games in magazines and the Internet. I will only add that the game is well written and the graphics beautifully done. I can't however buy the fact it happened 4000 years before Luke and friends with relatively the same technology. Maybe 50 to 100 years by no way 4000 years. The decisions you make can change the outcome of the game and though it starts slowly on Taris by the end it's fast and addictive. Unfortunately, this isn't a perfect game. The Xbox version has slow loading times for each map. The camera angle can get stuck with you not seeing the enemy in battle. Although I choose the actions my group takes, I feel disassociated with the characters in battle. I can give moves, how to attack and preps them for battles but it's up to them to fight. I'm left on the sidelines like a coach watching the action. The battles themselves seems clumsy with swipes being made to enemies followed by long pauses and points being calculated. The main problem if it can be called that is the time it takes to complete one game. 40-50 hours depending on side quests. That's a big chunk of time for a game. It took over my life for 2 weeks. The game time was clocked at 52 hours (I fell asleep playing the game one time. Still, a game that made a mark in the video game world. The other annoying issue I had is the "recycling of secondary character faces". It's like a race of clones. The recycling of the Sand People came and the Eder Camp is forgivable the people that we interact really cut corners. The only other issue I can see is that the characters can use "steriods" to improve strength etc. through injections. The performance enhanciing items are just not explained well enough to use them to any advantage. Maybe KOTOR 2 improved on the tid bits.

HEY! WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

First off: this game is awesome. Best Star Wars game I've ever played, surpassing even Bounty Hunter, which is saying a lot.

Now, here's the thing that prompted me to write this "review" in the first place. I decided to take a look at some of the less flattering reviews for this game, and what do I find but pages of reviews in which a bunch of [people] neglected to actually rate the game (Number one on the review list, people! Wake up!). What really irked me about this was that a good deal of these no-star reviews were positive, heaping nothing but praise upon this excellent game. Please, prospective reviewers, I beg you, I implore you, RATE THE GAME. Its overall rating is down because of those who neglected to do so.

Yeah, well, anyway, KotOR pwnz j00z. "Savior, conqueror, hero, villain. You are all things, Revan, and yet you are nothing. In the end you belong to neither the light nor the darkness. You will forever stand alone." Best line in the game. Doesn't that line pwnz j00? I thought so.

Excellent Game!

This game is a instant classic. I got it yesterday and only put it down when my eyes gave out. This game plays very well, very much like Splinter Cell in that respect. I really pity the PC players because the controller setup for the XBox is fantastic. Great game if you're will to give up a couple week of you life.

I bought an xbox just for this game!

It's been 4 days so far and I'm completely addicted to this game! This will not be an exhaustive review of all this game has to offer. If you want that read the reviews from the game's website. I am simply a die-hard star wars fan. (Yes, I even love the new movies) It's been a while since I've played a good RPG. As Final Fantasy got more and more cinematic and pretty to look at they made me bored. Knights brings back the fun of going out and both hacking and slashing your way to a more powerful character and yet filling in the seams with gorgeous scenery, NPC's with some actual depth (I never realised being a Jedi meant being a therapist) and on top of that a great story that unfolds slowly but easily.

Perhaps the best aspect of this game is the see-saw of the light and dark sides of the force. You get continually reminded of how your actions speak louder than words though your words can do plenty of damage themselves. Replayability is guaranteed due to the fact you can follow either path. This reminds me of one of my favorite older RPGs, the Ultima series, and in particular The Quest of the Avatar. The only way to beat that game was to become the extremely virtuous Avatar which in a hack and slash world can be very difficult.

The last thing I want to mention is the humor in this game. SW fans will be particularly tickled...to the point of falling off your chair laughing hysterically! Just wait until you meet HK-47. It's worth the price of the game alone.

Best Star Wars Game Ever

This is an amazing RPG and Star Wars game. There are limitless possibilities. Most important is the choice of the path of darkness or light. I have played this game for 15 hours and only owned it 2 days. The gameplay is very enjoyable. Besides for a slow beginning the story keeps you interested the whole time. The fighting engine is unique. The moment you see an enemy the game pauses and you can choose what to do. After that it is live play unless you want to pause it again. There are endless items and quests. There are also enjoble minigames like dueling, pazaac and swoop bike races. Being a jedi is also very exciting. You have much more control over your characters allegiance and force powers then in any other game.
KOTOR also has some flaws besides for the annoying nickname. The graphics are subpar. Bioware good have put a little more effort into taking advantage of the X Box hardware. There are also many loading sequences. That can become annoying. The frame rate also can slow down a lot during and after combat. Besides for that, KOTOR is an amazing game and in my opinion better than any RPG made yet for X Box. (Including Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic ranks with my top 5 favorite XBox games. 5.Mechassault 4.Jet Set Radio Future 3.Splinter Cell 2. KOTOR 1. Halo

To sum up a review on Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic in one word...UNBELIEVABLE! This game compares to the Final Fantasies on Play station. No other Star Wars game is as good as this. I can't say which part of the game is the best. The graphics, gameplay, charactors, storyline, they're all tremendous. If you want a good long fun game, buy this right away, with no delay..........

best game ever

this game is probably the best rpg out there. the only rpg that compares to this would probably be marrowind.(one of my other favorites) this game is just so great in that you cannot find any real faults in it... the dialog is great. fighting is awesome... storyline is incredibly sweet... the graphics are pretty good... over all this is a must have i would have to recomend.. only bad part i can think of is that there is no cooperative play on the game... so u cant go and beat the game with ur friends... game length is long and not a better game u could buy for xbox. a must have in my opinion

Rich, Involving and Phenomenal!

How can anyone NOT give this game 5 stars? Knights of the Old Republic is a near perfect role-playing experience!

This is how role-playing games should be done; open-ended gameplay, deep customization options, superb cinematics, and extreme length! I've spent 40 hours taking my time through the game and I'm not even halfway finished! But I simply can't wait until then to review it.

Other than Rogue Leader and the upcoming Rebel Strike for the Gamecube, Knights is the best Star Wars game ever made. The attention to detail is astounding. Star Wars fans will find every character, sound effect, and image faithful to the movies and literature. The camera is never a problem since you have full control over it. Animation is the weakest part of Knights. The frames per second stay pretty much constant all the time so there's no transition to notice. But you can tell the animation is subpar compared to most new games. It never bothered me.

I found Knights to be very non-linear. Players are given a great deal of freedom to do as they wish in plot, action and interaction with the game's characters. Once you get your spaceship you can select which planet you want to explore, and you can leave almost anytime you want in order to visit a different one. Dialog in the game is handled by giving the player choices of what to say. Some of the responses are truly hilarious. But take what you say seriously, it can have a major effect on your main character's progress. All of your characters can be customized greatly, from their statistics to their clothing. When you slap a piece of armor on someone it shows them wearing it on the screen at all times. There are endless numbers of tools and weapons at your disposal to further outfit your team, although certain people can't use certain items (Wookies can't wear armor). Lightsabers and Force powers make themselves available eventually and boy, are they ever satisfying! If you plan on using light side Force powers a lot be kind and helpful in your adventures. If you want to use dark side powers easily just be mean to everyone you encounter. The scope of choices in gameplay is impressive.

To keep things fresh there are a few minigames strewn throughout your adventure. I liked the Pazaak card game. It was easy to understand and proved to be a fun way to build credits even if it's mostly a matter of luck to win.

The music is what you would expect from a Star Wars experience. You'll hear some familiar tunes but most is brand new stuff that fits on-screen events well. Definitely no complaints there.

No other game I know of does such an entertaining job of ingrossing you in what it's like to be a Jedi than this one. Of course if you just want to be a Han Solo, blaster-toting scoundrel that's your choice, too. That's what makes this game so fun: FREEDOM. As far as I'm concerned this is an essential purchase for X-Box owners.

What a phenom. One of the best RPG's there is, bar none.

All right, before I get too far, let me tell you that I am not that far into the game yet. I have yet to get off of the Planet of Taris. Still I could not resist the chance to throw in my two cents worth on this game. This thing is beautiful.

When I say this is beautiful I mean it on all levels. Graphically and sound-wise, this game impressed me a lot. Special kudos must be given for the top-knotch voice acting, even for the games many alien languages. This does MUCH to give you a real sense of immersion in the Star Wars univers. You are not just reading text here, no sir. EVERY line of dialogue in this game is spoken by an outstanding cast of actors and actresses. You will note that your main character does not have a voice, but that I guess is just so that you can be identified no matter what you name yourself, because to have a voice yourself would have meant that you probably would have had to play a pre-made character who would have had to be voiced by a professional actor or actress. To me it is a lot more fun to play as "yourself". Special applause I give with pride also to Mr. Jeremey Soule. The music score here is perfect. Mysterious, beautiful, adventurous, majestic, exciting, this score has it all. Mostly original music, it still fits very well into the Star Wars universe and invokes the proper feelings when you hear it. It makes the whole thing sound and feel like one of the Star Wars movies.

Speaking of fun, that is to me where this game shines. I really have fun with this. The side games of Pazaak and swoop bike racing feel like accomplishments to me when you do them successfully. I have not gotten to man the Ebon Hawk turret guns yet, or handle a lightsaber, but I am looking forward to both of those things with quite an amount of relish and great anticipation. *Insert insane cackle of glee here, :) :) :)*

Also great fun is to be able to participate in the dueling matches in the Taris Cantina. Adding to the sense of fun and diversity is that you can choose whether you want to follow the light or dark side of the Force. I like the Light Side, but if you want to to play a totally monstrous hooligan who beats up everyone in sight and constantly talks smack, you can do that too.

The only way to close this review is to sort of repeat myself a bit. If you are a fan of the Star Wars movies and books and comics and so on, you should love this game. You don't have to be a fan of the movies to enjoy it, but if you are, that will make the game all the better for you. This thing is a beautiful game that on all levels will make you feel like you are living in the Star Wars universe and that there is a grand adventure going on and you are right in the middle of all the adventure and fracas and mayhem or whatever else you wish to call it. Not to bash another product, but even Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, did not do this for me. Others may like that game, but I personally did not find it fun at all. I never thought I would say that about a game I waited two years to play. Anyway, I digress and I am sorry for that, so I will get back to the closing point of this review. This is one of the BEST RPG's I have ever played, period, end of story. This game is a TON of fun and I'm not even off Taris yet. Pick it up if you get the chance to do that. The odds are you will not be disappointed with it. Peace, and God bless you.

What's not to love? The best RPG on X-Box

Now normally I'm a Playstation man but my friend and I have been playing Knights of the Old Republic on his Xbox over the last couple of days and I am completely blown away by how great this game is.

The premise is pretty simple, set the Star Wars universe thousands of years before the events of any of the movies and in the middle of the chaos of the Sith / Jedi wars. You start off a simple solider or rogue but gradually discover you hidden Jedi potential. One of the great things about this game is that you really have to be one of the good guys if you don't want to. You character accrues light side and dark side points based on your interaction with the other characters in the game. I have only played a lightside character at this stage so I must admit I don't know how different the game is if you plan a darkside character.

For a die-hard gamer like myself the use of the Wizards of the Coast / Dungeons & Dragons D20 system is fantastic as well. It means that anyone familiar with Star Wars or Dungeons & Dragons pen and paper games or PC games like Icewind Dale will have no problems understanding game mechanics when it comes to character creation, levelling up, combat or use of your Force powers.

The character animation is outstanding probably the best I have seen since FFX on Playstation if not better. The combat simulation is outstanding, probably the best I have seen. Lip-syncing is also impressive. The speech is also the best I have seen in a game since Final Fantasy X on PS2, all the main characters' dialogue is fully voiced along with plenty of additional lines for the supporting and background characters.

My only gripe about this game is that some of the dialogue for the supporting characters is a little repetitive especially if you have to speak to the same person multiple terms or ask them multiple questions.

Also the cut scenes, although very beautiful, can sometimes be a bit long with you having to sit through five or ten minutes of cinema before actually getting to do anything. But this is a complaint that I have about a lot of RPGs these days so maybe that's just a matter of personal taste.

In summary this is a great game. A well-realised, engaging story in a well developed setting with great characters which has been beautifully realised by the folks at BioWare. Any Star Wars devotee or fan of quality RPGS should love this game. I just have to hang out for it to be released on PC so I can really sink my teeth into it.
