Great game!

Maybe many have suggested a rental first, but please don't rent it. Buy it!
If you rent it, you might be intimidated by the difficulty of this game and lose the interest in buying it before you even finished the first chapter. Believe me, you will be defeated many times by the 1st boss before you defeat him.
This game get better and better if you play longer and longer. Extremely reawrding game.

Ninja Gaiden Rocks!

Ninja Gaiden is a great game. I just got it yesterday, and I'm already completely immersed in it. It is difficult, to be sure, but it's not frustrating and feels very rewarding when you beat a level. The control scheme feels and works perfectly for this type of game with L for block and the x,y, and b keys for attacks. The sound effects are good, while the music adds excitement to the game. The graphics are superb. The camera works fairly well, but it does have a few minor issues during combat and boss battles. Buy this game!

This is an amazing game but you may find it hard for first timers so I don't advise you to buy it unless you can take the pain of gitting you [rear] kicked a million times. But as far as that this is a long, beautiful, and a very fun game if your good at it. Are you up for the Challenge? If not your missing out on the greatist action game of all time.

Second only to Halo

I loved this game. Well paced. Difficult, but not overwhelming. Beautiful graphics. The camera angles felt unnatural at the beginning, but after a little bit of play it wasn't a problem at all. The action is fun, the story is good, and the game is long and interesting enough to play over and over again. I give it an unreserved five stars.

Helluva lot better than Shinobi

The mysterious, black-clothed assassins have been making a video-game comeback recently, but the results have been lackluster so far. Ninja Gaiden changes all of that with a kick-ass effort that redefines the classic franchise. When the original trilogy of Ninja Gaiden games was released on the NES, it set a standard for fast action and a high degree of challenge. This Xbox revival manages to achieve those lofty goals but isn't happy with merely recreating the past. Ryu Hayabusa, the hero from the previous games, is again the main protagonist, although there's no connection to the previous story line. Ryu's clan has been murdered, so bloody vengeance must be enacted and humanity saved along the way. While it's not the most original premise, the plot and voice acting add the required amount of motivation to keep you interested and move things along. Other audio elements like the sound effects and music are quite fantastic as every weapon features uniquely satisfying noises and the heart pounding main theme is an incredibly catchy. The only drawback is that the overall soundtrack is a bit unbalanced with a few tunes that don't quite cut it. Most modern action games add driving levels or mini-games to keep the gameplay fresh. Ryu is required to swim at times, but the meat and potatoes focuses on acquiring and upgrading weapons and techniques, and simply learning to make full use of the resulting moves. While this may sound dull on paper, it's immensely rewarding in action. You'll be driven insane with glee at how many different ways there are to develop Ryu's arsenal and dispatch foes with style. Be warned that there is plenty of tricky platform jumping that's a pain not because the timing is hard to master, but because the camera angle can be wonky. In fact, the frustrating camera is really the biggest mark against Ninja Gaiden. With action this fast and levels so different from one another, it's remarkable the viewpoint doesn't get in the way as much as it could. It's also worth noting that the camera is quite well behaved during boss battles. The rest of the visuals are just plain awesome-whether it's the shiny latches on Ryu's body armor or the detailed locations of each environment. For those wanting to strut their stuff, Master Ninja Tournament is the global-ranking system accessed via Xbox Live (a feature that could not be tested at press time). Other extra features include unlockables like an alternate outfit, the original Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, and Theater mode, so you can watch those neat CG cut-scenes. Highly skilled players may be able to finish the game quicker, but the majority of folks will clock in for a 20-plus-hour thrill ride. Few games are this good, for so long, and still keep you coming back for more. The game simply knocks you on your ass and keeps kicking it throughout. Ninja Gaiden is truly a modern masterpiece.

First off, I had no idea what type of game Ninja Gaiden would be. I saw a screenshot, heard a friend say good things, and immediately ordered a copy. It isn't all to often that a game comes along and a person can play it hours on end. There are those who play games for hours, but because there is nothing better to do. Ninja Gaiden demands you to play longer, even when you may have some important things that need to be done, you just have to get to the next save point or beat one of the next, out of many, bosses. This game is full of decent special effects, great sound, a not-so-cinematic, yet strong, storyline, and the gameplay is extremely addictive and I suggest you make time for Ninja Gaiden.

The graphics are great and the controls are beautifuly done. There are lots of combo's and i really loved the weapons and the spells. Some people say that it is to hard and it is at the start but when you get the hang of it it becomes really easy. I had to play on hard to get a challenge. Here is a hint to makeing the game easier to play learn how to block that makes the game so much easier if you block effectively

Soon to be a Platinum Hit!

Bungie studios, who also put out Halo and soon Halo 2, seems to know what makes a great game. I'm 24 years old and like games that are not too easy, but also games that are not too frustrating or impossible to beat. This game, like Halo, is somewhere in between. The cut scene movies are dramatic and entertaining and the graphics appear to be just as good as Halo's. There are two save points in each level and you can return to them at any time to save your game. There is usually one at the start of the level and another right before the entrance way leading to a boss. On some levels, there is only one save point, and it's a good idea to return to it frequently, especially after you have just beaten a difficult enemy or picked up something valuable. Sometimes this requires back tracking a ways, but it's worth it rather than to get killed and have to fight off those enemies or find the valuable item again. As the game progresses, your ninja will obtain technique scrolls teaching him new moves as well as more magic. I've noticed as you learn more techniques, the fights you have with enemies is awesome and you have a greater selection of moves to choose from. Unlike classic Street Fighter II (in which I could never master some of the moves), the moves in this game usually involve pressing the thumbstick in one direction and pressing a button while in combat, or jumping and pressing a button. You only have the option of choosing the NORMAL or HARD setting. Normal is difficult enough and takes me an average of three attempts to beat a boss. This doesn't include the attempts made during the level to get to a boss. On my way there I usually have to start over at least once from the last time I saved. At the end of each level your play time for that level is displayed and you'll notice that it increases as you progress in the game. I went from 13 minutes on the first level to 58 minutes on level 3. The enemies obviously get more difficult as usual and eventually obtain guns. Everytime you get shot you are stunned for a split second and when they keep firing it's difficult to get out of the way. Fortunately, you can block the bullets with your sword which helps. There are also items to increase your life which you find throughout each level. There aren't so many that it's too easy to keep your life full and there are just enough to where it is easy to succeed if you ration them and save them for the right time. This is a great game for new gamers as well as those from the Atari generation.

Quality game that belongs in your collection.

I read a bunch of reviews before getting this game, and they all said the same thing - great game, very hard. I ended up getting the game when the store did not have Crimson Skies and after the first 2 hours I was so frustrated from the first boss I was going to return it the next day.

I usually like simple brainless games to relax me, but I decided to not give up, and to play some more. It sucked me in and I played more and more. Now that I'm done with the game, I must say it's one of the best games I've ever played. Super graphics, smooth and natural movement. Great story, very varied environments, super cool bosses. It was very tough but now that I've beaten it and replaying it again with the unlocked plasma saber (to get all the scarabs to unlock the Nintendo games), it's much easier than the first time around.

The only negative points I did not like about the game are:

1) The camera angle just sucks sometimes.

2) Jumping puzzles. It's not fun when you have to try the same jumps 100x, and you have to get a series of jumps perfectly in order to do it in a limited time. The camera angle makes it more frustrating here.

3) Very tough at times, especially the first time around. I had to reload again and again to try many spots over. At least a few times I had to reload an earlier spot, or to retrace my steps so I can face the boss with more potions.

You don't need a walkthrough to finish the game, but it helps a lot. All of the puzzles are pretty logical and not unfair.

Oveall, I've been gushing about the game to my friends. It's worth your money.

PS: I've played Tenchu before, and many times in this game I wish I had a grappling hook :) It would have made things soooo much better...

I find this game to be overly hard just to be so at times. The graphics and fighting engine here are very nice and make you feel like Ryu. When I say hard I mean it, its hard in the fact that you'll find yourself far away from a save point and have just acoomplished a long and tedious feat only to be killed and have to redo the WHOLE part! That is what makes it hard, the bosses can be frustrating but beaten if you follow the "old school" type patterns of the bosses movements etc. In the end the game is gorgeous to look at with great bosses, weapons galore but is just too hard to play without a guide or not enough patience for most casual gamers! In the end I give this game five stars but is for die hard fans only, not for the casual gamer!
