When my brother tried to convince me to get an Xbox over a Game Cube one of his main arguments was the first original game for Xbox, called Halo. Let me tell you, Xbox is worth it just for Halo alone. You start out by waking up from a cyro freeze. Why the wake up, because you are Master Chief, the last Spartan, and you are needed to fight the alien race, called the Covenant. But you end up abandoning the ship, named the Pillar of Autumn, and land on some strange ring world named Halo. This world supposedly holds the key to humanities continuing existence, and you have to figure out the key. Sounds cool, huh? Well, it is. This game not only has a great story line, but it has great graphics, good multiplayer, and just an alien shooting good time. Your weaponry arsenal is fairly extensive and you get vehicles, what more could one want?! This may be one of the greatest games ever, so, that means get it and play it, you'll see what I mean. Oh, and if you like this you should read the books.
A truly fantastic game

Halo is still, in my opinion, the best game for the x-box in the last three years. Nothing else has come even close. The only thing that I see will be even better is Halo 2. But that is not till november so anyways........
The game has every little detail it needs to make this a never ending roller coaster, filled with danger, action, and even comedy [I'll get to that later] The story line itself is even intriguing. The year is 2525, at least that is what I think, and the human race has populated several star systems around the galaxy. However the peacefullness of the planets are in jeapordy as several alien races, calling themselves the Covenant, have launched a holy war, seems ironic with the events nowadays, against the human population. The humans only weapon is a secret government operation known only as SPARTAN.
Now to make a long story short, too late some of you are probably thinking, one spartan and a single human ship with a few hundred marines have landed on a ring shaped planet they call halo. On there they fight the Covenant in a desperate search for survival. That is where the game takes place, and believe me, each level is fantastic.
You are the Master Chief, a guy who can really kick some a** if you piss him off. He can only have two weapons at a time, unlike some of the really bad james bond games, and goes around following the storyline and kicking some alien butt.
The aliens are great, they laugh and taunt you if you retreat, or run away themselves if you kill all their friends. Try and throw an alien grenade on one of the grunts and he will actually run to his friends to try to get them to help get it off. The result is what you would expect.
The elites are the truly nasty ones, even though the hunters are big, I would rather fight four hunters than four gold plated elites, yikes! The jackals are just annoying, especially if they charge their guns up and take out ALL of your shields in one lucky shot.
The settings for each level are HUGE, not just big, but HUGE! You can drive a warthog [Jeep] or a ghost or a banshee [alien ships] or even a big human tank, my personal favorite. But watch out you dont kill more than two of your fellow marines by accident while you drive or they will turn on you. And launch some pretty nasty human grenades as well. And if you get the sniper pissed off, two words, DEAD MEAT.
One level that can be a pain is the library, where it is really dark and filled with the Flood (another alien species you will enevitably meet later on in the game) so grit your teeth and try to get it over with in the first three trys. It took me two times.
The levels vary from a island to a snowy valley. And the underground structures are awesome. Lots of hiding places for the bad guys so watch your step. But if things get hairy, there is always a weapons cache with ammunition and health so don't worry, if you can find it that is.
In conclusion, finally!, this is a truly breathtaking game and if you have an X-Box or a computer and dont have it, I will forgive you, but only once! So buy it now, I hear Best Buy has it for thirty bucks or something..........
Fantastic gaming experience, but gore limits audience.

I wouldn't change a thing about Halo. The game is so well thought out, so well designed from the levels to the art to the heavy THUNK sound when you drop a plasma rifle on the grass. You have to give yourself over to it when you find yourself doing things you have always dreamed about doing in a game but haven't been able to until now. The freedom with the weapons and vehicles, the realistic physics of grenade explosions and flying bodies, the wind rustling in the trees and the babbling brooks, the dark caverns and impossibly deep complexes, EVERYTHING puts you under a spell. You feel real emotions when you play this game. I laughed my head off in many situations. I felt my blood pressure go up while I staved off two angry Hunters as I searched dead bodies for left-over grenades.
I felt superior and powerful and I sat in my perch and sniped at aliens patrolling the entrance to a vast complex. It's just the abolute best gaming experience I've had since the glory days of old Mario and Zelda. You just sit back and stare at the menu screen, watch the giant Halo slowly spinning through space and think, I'm gonna go down there, I'm gonna be somewhere on that ring, and it's gonna be awesome. You hit the start button and you know what? It is.
Extremely Fun!

Yes, I gotta admit.. I'm a huge Doom, Goldeneye, and Half-Life fan. Just don't let that distract you from buying this masterpiece if you aren't into either one of those games. I never thought I'd be saying this, but this game beats all of them in terms of story, graphics, and fun. The graphics are freakin awesome. Everything looks the way it should, and it doesn't slow down no matter how many enemies are on the screen. I did notice slowdown when you are in a huge area swarming with trees, enemies, and vehicles; but not enough to make it unplayable. If you enjoyed the storylines from the above mentioned games (well, except Doom of course), then you'll love this game. It's very interesting, making you curious throughout the game (oh yeah, beat the game on legendary, and you're in for a funny ending!). The enemy AI is top notch. They pretty much think for themselves, whether they are hiding behind rocks, or waiting to regroup. I especially love the small grunts, which make funny comments throughout the game ("We're gonna die!"). The multiplayer mode is also awesome, as it allows you to have up to 16 people play at the same time (too bad you'll need multiple Xbox's in order to play with more than 4 people). If you don't like a specific senario type, you can customize it, adjust the type of game (there is a race type game!), to the number of kills. A problem I found was that there are no bots to play against. Oh well, I guess it's because they had no time to put them in.
All in all, I had so much fun with this game. After completing the game, I found myself doing stupid things like playing a game of chicken with the jeep in multiplayer, to finding new ways to kill enemies, etc. It never ends! At least rent the game, you'll love it!
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention.. the sound and music is awesome too!

Halo is the ULTIMATE game of the year. Like Harry Potter, you read some pages, you just continue reading. You can't stop! It takes you away completly.
Here's a heads-up on future Halo 1 buyers(There is 10 levels):
Pillar Of Autumn: This is the first level of the game. Use caution on Covenent. They're not fun to play with.
Halo: This is one of the longest levels in the game. Just follow Cortana's directions and you'll find it quite fun.
Truth and Reconciliation: Board the ship and find Captain Keyes. If you're playing on Legendary, good luck with the sword elites.
The Silent Cartographer: Use skill, strategies and a quick finger for blasting.
Assault on the Control Room: There is practicly one rule for this level; please try not to kill any Troops with the Scorpian or the Rocket Launcher or you'll die a very uneasy death.
343 Guilty Spark: Be prepared for Flood(Small guys who like eating Troops), Flood warriors(my guess is Mutated Troops who think you're the Covenent) and Flood Carriers(carries more flood on his back).
The Library: Nothing to look at except flood and huge rooms. Just finish the level in one piece.
Two Betrayals: All I can say is Assault on the Control Room backwards. This time, the chaos has incresed because the Flood is on the loose.
Keyes: Even though Captain Keyes will die, try and find him(you'll have help with Nav Points).
The Maw: The final level. You're back on the Pillar of Autumn. Escape on a jeep and you're home free.
I hope that helped. Get more information at halo.bungie.net .
Oh the hype!

Halo Combat Evolved is the most overhyped game I've ever encountered. I've heard for years how great this game is so I finally bought it on sale for $15, even that was too much.
I am a veteran PC player of first person shooters who started with the original Wolfenstein 3D and have played almost everything since including all the Dooms, Quakes, Jedi Knight, Half-life and Unreal Tournament. There is nothing in Halo that hasn't been done before! In fact it's the easiest most linear FPS I've ever played. I finished the single player game in a little more then two days.
There are only 10 levels in the game, each of which is broken down into 3 to 4 sub chapters. The game play lacks any puzzle elements, switch hunts or boss battles so all you do is move down a path shooting everything that moves, which is fun for about 5 min then it gets old. you are outfitted with a motion sensor, right out of the movie Aliens, so it's no mystery where the bad guys are. There are a few times in the game where you are required to locate specific areas but that is aided by your onboard computer assistant who kindly gives you nav points to locate them, so you just follow the dots leaving piles of bodies in your wake.
As other reviewers have noted you can drive vehicles but the human vehicles take no damage at all and you can't get one of the other marines to drive the vehicle if you want to take the gunners position so you are left to driving, but then you can't shoot from the drivers position. This leaves you stopping and dismounting everytime you want to engage the enemy. Alien vehicles are one man vehicles so you can shoot as well as drive and they do take damage.
Most FPS games let your character carry far too many weapons. Halo has the opposite extreme. Your character is limited to carrying two weapons and granades so the majority of your post combat time is spent looking through the piles of bodies for the best two weapons you can find. All the standard FPS guns are here the pistol, machine gun, sniper rifle, alien plasma rifle, needler [direct half-life rip off], shot gun and of course the rocket launcher.
Enemy AI is also vastly over hyped. Its obvious after a few minutes they run a standard pattern that is easily overcome with a quick trigger finger and a strafe.
Halo's graphics are very pretty and the frame rate is smooth throughout the game but combined with the unispired story and game play and linear design it not a big a plus.
Multiplayer play is limited to the usual styles but lacks any online capability at all. To use it you have to all be local then you can share the console or connect several together.
If you're a veteran FPS player Halo is likely to disappoint. If you're a newbie to FPS's then you will get some enjoyment from this game till you discover the vastly superior PC FPS games, which you have been able to play online or over a network with your friends since the mid 90's!
Believe it, Halo is an All-Time Classic

There are only 2 great console first-person shooters, Goldeneye 64, and Halo. Before I bought Halo, I couldn't see what the big fuss is about, but now I do - Halo is the Real Deal, a true Classic that you will play endlessly and fondly remember years from now. With a huge and engaging single-player mode, a worthwhile co-op mode, 16 player multiplay that's as effortless as plugging a cord, great graphics and controls that fit like a glove, Halo holds its own against any FPS game on the PC.
The essense of Halo is playing with other people. Even in the first stages of the single player game, you are fighting alongside your fellow shipmates and marines. Your buddies call out to each other and cover one another, and so do the bad guys. It's cool to jump into a jeep or tank and see friends climb into the turrets and hang on the sides, turning the vehicle into a moble fortress. At the times when you truly go solo, like infiltration missions or whatnot, you really do feel alone, sometimes like you're a one-man army and sometimes like the entire world is falling apart on top of your head.
The story and the setting are very cool - you crash land on a giant ring-world of an ancient dead civilization, with structures and settings that are absolutely enormous, sometimes miles across. I liked the ramp-up in difficulty, moving from large coordinated attacks to one-man army raids and on to thrilling moments when all you can do is clear a path to run through, because you're scared to death of what's behind you. My only complaint is that some locations are recycled too often, and it seems that I revisited everything twice.
Co-op is wonderful! Somehow Microsoft made it seem as if they customized the game for co-op mode, without losing anything by playing in single-player mode. Most FPS co-op is frustrating, as you struggle against enemies and situations designed for 1 person, not 2. The maps are usually too small, and the enemies and weapons are too few. Since Halo already has other good guys fighting in the game, the 2nd player is really just adding some intelligence to one of your buddies. It's so much fun I finished the game with a friend before I ever played it alone.
Once you're bored with the story, you'll find some of the best multiplay modes I've ever seen. You can connect 4 Xboxes with 4 players each, for 16 player mayhem. The setup is effortless (it uses 10/100 ethernet cords and hubs, the same as your computer). Game types include deathmatch and team deathmatch, capture the flag, hot bag, king of the hill, assault, racing and rally, and on and on. Plenty of custom options, like unlimited grenades and all-player invisiblity keep things constantly changing. One complaint about multiplayer (my 2nd and last complaint about hte entire game) is that there aren't enough maps to play on, and most of those maps are of the boxed-in maze type.
If you own an Xbox, You should own this game.
Hold up a sec....

...It looks incredible. Microsoft obviously couldn't wait to show of the XBoxs capabilities. The vertex shading and shadowing, the bump mapping, the anti-aliasing are all flawless. The sound is incredible. But that's about it.
... . And the vehicles, while a great feature, aren't used hardly enough. You can only use the tank in one level, the warthog in a couple and the ghost and banshee in one. ... It also suffers from the "Too Many Little Bad Guys" syndrome. Instead of fighting really tough bad guys you get wave after wave of little guys, who are easy to kill, but since there's so many you can either shoot all of them, and use up all your ammo, or kill some and let the rest chase you. But sometimes if don't kill them all, the autosave feature won't kick in...Basically, Halo left me shrugging. Considering how short the game is, and that it actually features demos for other games, obviously Halo was rushed into stores. Instead of an involving game we get a showcase for the graphical prowess of the XBox.
As any gamer will tell you, rent before you buy. ...

BEST GAME EVER! I PLAYED THIS AT THE XBOX ODYSSEY IN LA. IT IS A VERY NICE AND SMOOTH GAME. FPS IS GREAT AS WELL AS THE GRAPHICS. THE CONTROLLER IS WIERD AT FIRST BUT YOU GET THE HANG OF IT (PUT IT THIS WAY IT TOOK ME 10 MINUTES BEFORE I COULD GET THE MOVEMENTS DOWN.) ITS REALLY COOL TO SEE STUFF IN THE REFLECTION OF HIS FACE MASK! VERY DETAILED. IT ALSO MAKES IT MORE FUN HAVING A SHIP AND A VEHICLE! JUST BUY THIS GAME WHEN YOU GET A CHANCE! LATER
halo is awesome
