the best!

I don't like first person shooters, but this game got me hooked. I have 4-5 games, and when people come over, this is the only game they play... everything else is just secondary.

You will not be disappointed.

What could have been

Uncreative implementation of one of the best concepts in gaming history. Without a doubt, Halo 1 & 2 have the most engrossing story and universe compared to any other game bar none. Better than average AI and a decent assortment of weapons can easily keep one entertained. In fact, there is not a lot negative to say about Halo, but one of the problems is bad enough to bring down the entire game. This is of course, the use of checkpoint saves as opposed to user saves. It may seem like a long game to some of the less perceptive gamers, but in reality a lot of the game is simply doing the same exact things over and over again. I realize there may be some people out there that enjoy this type of mindless repetition, but for those who require a little more intellectual stimulation than your average assembly line worker, you will quickly begin to wonder what unimaginative knucklehead decided to make this part of the game. What makes this worse is the sometimes atrocious timing of these checkpoints. You will be amazed at how far back you can be set if you die before the designers allow you a save. This does not make the game difficult, it just makes it a waste of time. Replay value is also affected by this, since some scenes will be so familiar from when you had to go through it 12 times, they will begin to seem like a chore. Hopefully in future versions, the game play designers will attempt to put as much effort into the game as the people who designed everything else.

A couple of other small annoyances. 1) Architectural designs that incorporate huge drops as part of their structure for no other reason except to make something a player can fall off of. Is there no OSHA in space? 2) The ability of the aliens no know that you have them sited in your sniper rifle from great distances. Why these guys start dodging around as soon as I sight them up from a mile away is beyond me.

The best "first-person shooter" game I've played

To start this review, let me say that I DON'T own an XBOX or this game. I've played this game at a friends house or at Best Buy. At Best Buy I've played this game for fourty-five minutes without noticing it. That's how much I love this game! Most of the games I play are either third-person (Max Payne) or first, like this. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was my favorite until I played this game. I've also never been enough of a nut to find out how long it takes to beat the game, that defeats the purpose of just trying to have fun with the game.

The action is unrelenting, blasting aliens on their own homeplanet of HALO. You are the only armored "Master Chief" and although you play with other non-armored troops, they seem to be either idiots, or they leave you to do all the hard work. You go on countless missions by yourself, leaving them to be killed by the time you get back. You can also kill them yourself.

You seem to have all of the advantages: Among them awesome firepower with the ability to carry a hell of a lot of ammo, the ability to use alien weapons, and best of all, a shield that actually recharges itself. You also have a voice in your helmet, a AI program telling you what to do and what your objective is. The vehicles are awesome too, the US Army could learn some lessons from this game. There's the 4x4 Warthog which is my favorite, the Scorpion tank, and a couple of alien crafts.

Control wise, it's incredibly smooth. It's a truly awesome game that I really can't find any fault with!

great fps, near perfect

There were some monotonous parts (the library) and has two control mechanisms I hated (crouching by constantly holding the joystick button down), and driving vehicles (should have been like GTA, it would be simpler), but otherwise I couldn't put it down! Especially worth it now that you can get it used for 10 bucks.

A girl in a boy's world

Yep, I loved it, as pretty much everyone does. The only difference is that I'm a girl who loved it. It is a wonderfully produced game that can really be played by anyone who can operate an X-Box controller. I can only win on the lowest difficulty level, but I can muddle my way through the higher levels as well. Somehow killing aliens is different and much more soothing.
The graphics are amazing and there are lots of options for comtroller set up and character views. It allows every player to customize their controller, which is a big help for me because I prefer all inverted. You can have almost any arrangement of buttons you choose and I wish all my games had as many options as this one does. There is a great storyline going on and it is easy to follow although it isn't simple by any means.
Keeping the aliens from finding earth is only the beginning. Can you save the planet with your evolved combat skills? You'll get sore thumbs though because you'll want to keep playing until you finish the game.
My favorite part is the multiplayer options. My guy-friends and I can get together and play each other to the death. It's great fun and I hope everyone enjoys it, even girls like me. Buy Halo 2. It is just as worth it.

Best game ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All right, soldier; are you ready to look death straight in the eye?! Are you ready to grab all your weapons and kill every Covenant and Flood that you see?!! If so, read on.

In Halo, Combat Evolved, you take on the role of the last survivor of the SPARTAN project, the Master Chief. The year is 2552, and a group of aliens called the Covenant is trying to wipe out the human race. You and the rest of the USNC Marine Corps have to stop them. In your special MJOLNIR armor, you are extremely powerful. You have built-in energy shields that will protect you and recharge over time, but if you take to much damage, you will fall. Halo: Combat Evolved is a mature rated video game, rated such for violence, blood, and gore. I do not recommend this game for children under 15, and even then it's a stretch. In Halo: Combat Evolved, you can only carry two weapons at a time, which I thought was a bit irritating. You do get to carry grenades, which is a plus. You can carry four of each of the two types, fragmentation and plasma. In Halo: Combat Evolved, there are several vehicles that you can drive, including a Warthog, which is like a Jeep with a machine gun mounted on the back, a Scorpion, which resembles a tank, and many others. The multi-player is absolutely phenomenal, with a great feature where you can modify the game modes. If you like good, bloody, first-person shooters, Halo: Combat Evolved is right for you.

Good Looking and Smooth too!

Most first-person type shooter games all lack one thing: Smooth graphics when there's LOTS of action on the screen. That is, unless you buy Halo. With a full screen of action, the X-Box does not even break a sweat with its graphics or reation time of the controller. The levels are huge, and the missions are not the typical and boring, "find the puzzle" routine. The Audio is first rate, clear and in Dolby Digital.(5.1 channels) The Story is not to campy, and makes sense if you follow it. If one could find one bad aspect of the game, it's that its to short. More levels would have been nice. Although this game was an early first-person shooter for the X-Box, I believe that it still holds up to 99% of the first-person shooters currently being made today.(I.E. 007, Unreal Tour., etc.) This game is a staple to any X-Box owner.

Very good, but still overrated

I will keep this short.

Halo is an amazing game and was a great first hit for the Xbox. The game handles well, and nice graphics, and amazing battles. But this game is still fairly short, with only 12 missions and several re-used maps. The new enemy that appeared mid-way through the game was refreshing, but the game still got old. For most, this game will last about a month before you sick of it. For anyone who has game loving friends, this game will last you indefinetly. The multiplayer is that fun and that big. Even for those that hate First Person Shooters, you should still give it a try. Why? I was not a fan of FPS either, but Halo turned me wrong. There is only one truly bad thing about this game: once you play it, virtually no other console FPS will seem fun anymore. But who cares.

Halo is far from the best game ever, or even the best game on Xbox (the best are Panzer Dragoon Orta, Tom Clancey's Splinter Cell, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance). One of the best reasons to buy a 'Box.

Halo is a pleasing experience of killing and conquering

Halo
-you can play with as many players as you want.
-Conquer Halo through many different extremes of hardship and damn can they get hard!
-when you beat all of halo, you can still play the game as a turnamat(sp) with someone else, and what can be more fun than the hunt and kill game with many many different levels and tests
such as races, king of hill, hunt and kill, and much more
-many surprizes will come about, i love it when an AI comes out and scares the crap out of you

Halo doesnt give the mind a very hard work out, but reflects are given a good work out.

I enjoyed this game very very much. Some thing a gamer should buy, beat and come back later and pick up and play again

Outstanding Replay Value

I have owned this game for 1 year. Single player and co-operative are excellent, but after beating the game it is the system link multi-player that keeps you coming back for more. Even after a year, almost every weekend there is Halo time - either at a lan party or on gamespy. This game IS XBox. Nothing else comes close.
