Lets re-cap on the obvious. Halo is insanely popular. It was Microsoft's biggest success story hands down for the XBox. It was eventually brought to the PC (the platform Bungie was developing it for before Microsoft bought them out) and later it was surprisingly ported to the Macintosh. I guarantee you that fans of this game will give me negative helpful votes, but I can say upfront that this is not the reason I write this. I tell you this because it is my duty to share what was ultimately, a big let-down for me as far as my expectations were concerned.

Halo is grossly over-rated. I love to read and watch movies and excercise a lot too, so I am not parked with a controller in my hand 24/7 like some. I have played more than my fair share of games. I believe that if Halo had been released on the PC, first, it would have fallen flat, as there have been much better first person shooter games available for that platform. Thats not what happened though. What Halo did right for me was provide long stretches of gaming mediocrity, peppered with moments of stunning greatness.

What it does right: Halo's control is the best for a first person shooter I have ever encountered with a dual analog stick controller. This is not to say that a mouse would not have been better, or that Nintendo's upcoming motion sensor "Wii-mote" won't improve this. For a console controller of its generation though, the XBox controller "S" fit the bill for this game extremely well. Also, there are parts of the game that are extremely well done and exciting. The fighting is intense, and the enemy Artificial Intelligence is stronger than in most games. The vehicle combat manages to be some of the most fun in the game, and I wish there was more of it.

Overall though, the things the player does in the game are very repetative. The fights are against the same enemies over and over and over again. No bosses. I like bosses, where the hell are they? Would it have been so hard to make a good covenent or Flood boss? Oh well. It is what it is. Which brings me to the story. The story gets a big fat 0 stars. It is so derivative of other sci-fi stories that it borders on blatant plagiarism. There are direct quotes in the dialogue stolen from other stories and movies all over the place. If you dont't believe me... look into it for yourself. James Cameron alone could have sued and won.

Looooooonnnnnnnnggggg stretches of boring covenant killing. The "...Guilty Spark" chapter is one of the most tedious parts of any game I have ever played. Nice work. This is truely "killer app" boredom at its finest.

Overall, it was fun and boring in different parts. I didn't comment on the graphics becuase quite honestly I didn't think they were worth commenting on. Agree or disagree? I don't care. Hopefully this will be the last time I ever think about this game so much.

Looks great, sounds hilarious, but is boring...

I've been playing video games for ~25 years now, and this is not all that, as some would lead you to believe. Unreal back in '97 was more exciting than this game.

Rent this game first, and see if you want to keep playing it after a few levels. If you make it to the "flood" and are not bored to death, then you might want to buy this game. I'm guessing you won't.

Ok, the game does look great. Not that it shouldn't given the hardware. The sound is hilarious, with the voice-acting of the enemies a complete riot.

But, the gameplay is boring. Totally. This game isn't even challenging. All you have to do is move forward a little which attracts a couple of enemies, and then make a small retreat. The few who saw you will follow you to get killed like cows waiting for a slaughter.

There are "10" levels. No, not really. 3 are re-used. The spaceship you visit twice, and there is this long trek before the "flood" and then back the way you came. No excitement there.

I admit, the last level is fun to see, if you can stand playing the game long enough to get there. It's only due to the fact that Obi-Wan and Silent Hill were delayed a couple of days, and Max Payne is no where to be found, that I even bothered to finish this game.

Holy crap this game sucks

What the heck does everybody think is so good about this pile of steaming dung? The graphics are good, okay, but everything else about it is boring. The levels- boring. The gameplay- boring, I mean WTF you can only carry 2 guns at a time? That sucks. I'm all for realism, but not if the realism bogs down the game itself! All the enemies look the same, the driving sucks, its just... blah. If you want a good game go buy Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

junk

I have been playing Halo for a very long time, and it is nowhere near the level of greatness people say it is. Sure, people say it has good graphics, but it is only 30 frames per second! Only 10 guns, compared to Timesplitters 2's 40 weapons. The level design is amazing in some parts, with you against a herd of tall and short aliens, but those parts do not last long, sadly. As a reward to your sweet gunning skillz, you must go inside for the most boring fps game ever. Inside the buildings is like groundhog day, the same chasms over and over, facing the same enemies with your basic selection of 4 guns you will actually use. Assult Rifle, Plasma Pistol, Plasma rifle, and Pistol are really the only guns you are offered to use in abundance.

The multi player offers no online, no mapmaker, no bots, no character select, and only a few modes of play. There is only one choice of a character! Sad, very sad. The maps are too big or small to really have some sweet action going on, just alot of funless sniping and unsatisfying kills. Perfect dark and timesplitters 2 are the greatest multiplayer consoul fps's of all time, so I suggest getting Timesplitters 2 insted of this overrated, terrible waste of hard drive.

Read gamespot.com's review of this game. An 8.5. That is pathetic, expessicly how they give the far underrated masterpiece, Metroid Prime, a 9.6! If you are deciding to buy a consoul purely for an amazing first person experience, buy a Gamecube and Metroid Prime, or a Playstation 2 and Half-Life.

Visit gamespot.com and read their Metroid Prime review, if a game can be that good, imagine what Starcraft: Ghost will be.

ps. metroid prime is sweet!

this game sounds good

I bought this game after hearing everyone say how great it was. First, I'm not a big fan of first person shooters, so much of my rating is based on that. The rest is on the games enemies. In some games, when you kill an enemy, there is some level of satisfaction. I feel no such satisfaction in this game. If you like first person, futuristic settings, then you'll probably like this; I did not.

GREAT GAME....GOT TO PLAY AT XBOX SHOW IN LA!!!!

This is got to be the best game on a console. It was so life like and graphical. You can see reflections on the mask of your warrior! This is a must buy. This gets 5 stars because
1. Graphics 10
2. Gameplay 9
3. Control 10
4. FPS 10
This is why I give it 5 stars! (...)
