Where are the mammoths?

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

I really enjoyed playing this game. The puzzles, overall, were intuitive. I was disappointed when the game ended. It seemed it came too quickly, didn't resolve all of the loose ends, and since so much of the game revolved around mammoths, and seemed to promise them, I expected to see some.

One of the Best Games I've ever played

I don't know where to begin. The best adventure games I've ever played are Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Myst, Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within, and Syberia. I'd give this game more than 5 stars if I could. The storytelling is superb and engaging. You'll fall in love with Kate and Oscar and be so sad when the game is over. There's probably more spoken dialog in here than in a regular movie. A lot of the puzzles are dialog based and you just have to keep talking to people. Getting to the puzzles, this game is really easy compared to others. That was good for me, because I like to focus on the story. I'll give you one puzzle hint, there is a scene where you are told to find a lemon or a lime (I can't recall which one). You will easily find the one not asked for, and that is the one to use. Don't needlessly search around for the other. There are so many games that cloned themselves after this but fell short. Just play this one. It started it all. NOTE: Syberia I and II are one long continuous story. The developer wanted one game, but the publisher made them break it in half for time/money reasons. You have to play both games together to get the whole story. Playing just one is like watching just one of the Matrix movies. I give the Syberia series 100 stars out of 5. It is fun for all ages. A family could get together and play this.

Lovely and fun, short and sweet!

I enjoyed Syberia very much and was disappointed when it ended... although the ending was satisfying, well thought out, and beautiful to watch. I know I will be playing this again.

The makers of Syberia created a intriguing environment. Even being several years in release, it still looks as good, or better, than many newer games. But for some moving water, smoke, and a few birds, it is a static world. Still, the detail in many areas made me stop and marvel. It is a dark environment, but that only adds to the feel of the story and is appropriate.

As with any game, there are areas that the player might wish changed. For me, the phone calls were something of a distraction, even though I realize they were a novel way of presenting clues. But, the voicework was done extremely well- no monotone, lifeless reading of a script here. The whole boyfriend thing was just annoying and added little to Kate Walker's character growth. I started wondering if she and Oscar, the automaton train engineer, might be a better match.

The puzzles are simple and easy. A nice change from some of the harder, nonsensical puzzles of other games, but there were times when I wished there were a little more to them. In one instance, you must repair an automaton creation. While getting into the automaton parts depends on your solving another puzzle, the 'repair' work is nothing more than throwing a lever.

One extra in the game is the menu that allows you access to cutscenes. There are some very lovely scenes, beginning with the rainly funeral procession, and it is a very nice touch. I wish other games would do the same.

If you enjoy games that make you ponder for hours, you will not enjoy Syberia. But, if you are a beginner or want to play a lovely game that won't cause much frustration, then Syberia is for you.

This review was posted earlier, however after playing several more games since then my appreciation for the beauty of Syberia has grown and I wanted my rating to reflect that.

Not quite frozen out of Syberia

Decent game - Fun to play, though sometimes quite trying.

Though the tasks are mostly not individually difficult - some are almost dead obvious - there is a convolutedness to play which stretches out the gameplay experience. A few tasks are made for the serious puzzle player and require patience.

The plot of the story is well crafted and provides a motivation for Kate to be in each situaton, along with a number of interesting minor characters. I particularly liked the couple on the barge - who knows where they came from? You could see them walk on in a 40s Hollywood comedy. Unfortunately, each character has a very limited script. You have to hear each spiel at length, sometimes a few times, to glean a bit of crucial information. You get to choose which question to ask in each turn of the conversation; but in some cases if you pick them in the wrong order, you miss something.

The endless "I don't need to go down there" from Kate makes me wish they'd included more little cubbyholes I could peek into, rather than being forbidden.

I'm not sure I agree totally with the reviewers citing "state of the art graphics".

I played this game about six months ago, but it keeps coming to the surface of my memory. To tell the truth, it's probably a better game now than it was at the time I played it. That by itself suggests it's good entertainment.

Syberia

This game is all fun. The graphics are state of the art. The locations are stunning with rich details. Be careful not to spend days trying to move to the next location because you will get stumped. This is one of my complaints. The other is that the game crashes often which is why it only get 4 stars overall. But don't let those minor details stop you from buying this game. For the price I say it's a very good buy and should be part of your collection.

I really enjoyed this game. In fact, so much so I finished it in 3 nights. I think the plot was well thought out and it kept me interested. There were a few slow moments in the game and a few times the required task was not obvious to me at all, but all in all, my only complaint is that it is too short of a game.

Good Game with a few problems

I loved how this game looked, especially Valideline. The storyline was interesting. I was interested in the legend of Syberia and other facets. I liked the Dan, Olivia, and Mom. I didn't like the ending. I also had some troubles running the game on my computer, which meets the system requirements. I had trouble with freezes at certain points, like at the begining when the hotel clerk gets the fax. I didn't like a couple of things about the ending. I loved how many extra things were included to make a world instead of a room with only what you need. I didn't like how long it took to get everywhere. I thought this game was much nicer to look at and more detailed than The Longest Journey, but it didn't have quite as good storyline or puzzles. It was overall an enjoyable experience.

One of the best adventure games, ever.

Perhaps it is the incredible graphics? Maybe the rich, detailed story line, or the interesting and creative puzzles? It could just be the old town, European charm. Whatever it is, it all adds up to being one of the best adventure games ever made. I've played so many, and Syberia conquers them all. If you like adventure games, or any types of games for that matter, you have to play this. You don't know what you are missing.
Simply put, this game is well, purely incredible.

Gorgeous fun

Syberia is an adventure game that has the feel of a movie. The graphics are breathtaking, especially the landscaping and buildings. The music, while not always present, is mournful and sweet. The story is engaging and quite original--no fantasy cliches here. It has an element of the fantastic yet is grounded in real locations.

The puzzles are of the inventory variety, and aren't too complex. The only way to get stuck in this game is simply missing something you were supposed to click on or a conversation you were supposed to have had. I enjoyed the fact that I could largely figure out what to do without consulting hint guides. A nice touch was the fact that you pick up several documents/books which contain clues to puzzles. If you like to explore than you shouldn't have any problems.

The game isn't perfect though. I don't really like the way dialogue trees were handled. After the initial greeting, you have a uniform choice of topics to pursue with each character--topics such as yourself, your mission, the person you're looking for, and others depending on your particular point in the storyline. That is all well and good, but once you've selected a topic, it does not go away. So let's say you go back to a person to see if they have any new information for you. Well you can't tell what's new without actually clicking on each topic and seeing if the dialogue is the same as last time or new. I think it would be better if the topic greyed out if you'd already heard what the person had to say about it. I'd also like to see a dialogue journal.

Movement could also be quite annoying. There was a lot of running around, and watching the character climb stairs or ladders was painfully slow.

I wish the game were longer. It ended rather abruptly. I thought the goal was to make it to Syberia, but that didn't happen. I started it in the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday and finished it that night. It took me around 10 hours tops. I couldn't stop playing because I wanted to see what would happen next. Then suddenly I found the guy I was looking for and it was all over. Just like that. I will definately be playing Syberia 2.

Beautiful graphics, and at least some suspense

I didn't find "Syberia" nearly as easy as some of the other reviewers did. Whether that's good or bad depends on your own perspective, of course. The graphics are gorgeous, which is to say they're beautiful when they're supposed to be (such as in Valadelaine, the French village where the adventure begins) and wonderfully ugly when they're supposed to be (such as in the broken down old Russian factory town Kate and Oscar get stuck in at one point).

The game itself was (for me, at least) mostly in the "pleasantly challenging" range. Sometimes the next step is a bit too obvious, other times you might have to send Kate up and down the street several times before she stumbles onto the clue you missed. This, of course, gets a bit dull once you've put together all but one of the pieces in a given setting; but it's loads of fun once you do finally find that piece. The game won't let you advance to the next level until you do achieve all that you need to do to solve the puzzle in the end, so it's impossible to "lose" the game. The only real "secret" is that every lever Kate is capable of pulling and every room she can enter has a purpose.

The game's backstory, involving Kate's whiny boyfriend and her best friend, is a bit annoying, but it does set the stage well for the ending and for Syberia 2, which I can't wait to play! Also, since the object is just to find the various pieces of the puzzle and figure out how they work, you can really only play the game once. But it is a nice little adventure for that one time, and unless you have a lot of practice with these games, you'll probably get to start it a few times before you finish it.
