I love games but was unable to find a contemporary computer game that I understood and enjoyed. (By contemporary, I mean not a traditional game like Monopoly or Chess- I understand those, ha ha.) It seems, in general, most computer games are designed with men in mind- shoot 'em up, violence, battles, monsters, that just don't appeal to me. This game was the first I found that held my interest. I like spy themes, mysteries... Second, because I'm new to contemporary games, it's the first I've been able to understand with a little help from my teenage daughter. She zipped through the game, but the concept of finding clues by mousing over pictures, moving from scene to scene, collecting items... was challenging for a beginner who is used to playing games by rolling a die and moving three squares. I think this is a good introductory game for moms and grandmas like me.

I bought this game with expectations it would be similar to Myst. It was something altogether different. The main character is very likeable along with many other different and original characters. The game is challenging and very addictive. I recommend it for fans of Myst who want more to deal with in terms of characters.
Exciting and had Wonderful graphics!

The graphics in this game are incredible and the story line was quite interesting. Kate Walker (the main character) is in this small town trying to close a business deal and gets caught up in the death & mystery of the family who owned the automaton factory. She learns that one member of the family, who was believed to be deceased, is actually still alive and she has to locate him in order to wrap up her business.
In locating Hans Varlburg (the last surviving family member) she travels to strange and exotic places. The graphics throughout this part are breath taking. One annoying part about the game is that you constantly have to find other characters to talk to, and get as much info out of them as possible in order to locate certain items and move ahead.
Overall, the game was outstanding. Truly addictive, once I had finished Syberia, I ordered Syberia II so that I could find out what was going to become of Kate Walker and Hans Varlburg.

I enjoyed playing this game because the story was interesting, but the puzzles themselves were not much of a challenge (even though I did get stuck a few times). The puzzles were completely plot driven. The graphics were beautiful. The only criticism was that there was no way to get to places that you had already visited, so there was a lot of watching the heroine walk (or run) through scenes over and over, back and forth, which got old. Fairly good length for playing time.

For those with a P4 or faster processor, or one that uses hyperthreading you will need the SP3 patch for the game. My instructions stated that the patch had been included on disc 2...but it wasn't. After doing an extensive search of both discs and finding no patch or folder containing a patch...I downloaded the patch from the site, installed it and played with it and in 98/ME compatibility mode simultaneously. I have a P4 @ 3.2 Ghz and Kate was moving so slow...it was painful. I needed both solutions and with them both I had a fairly good game without any hitches, glitches or crashes.
I purchased Syberia 2 years ago as a 9.99 jewel case bargain. After playing Myst and its sequels, I didn't think I ever wanted to play an adventure game again. Needless to say, I'm not an adventure gamer at heart. Due to the lack of games written for the PC (as opposed to the now all too familiar 'adapted' PC games from consoles) I needed something new to play and this was what I was down to.
I installed the complete 1.1 GB game and it played well. I was very impressed with the quality and construction for a 2002 game.
The graphics were stunning and slightly grotesque...yet I found them much more engaging then anything the Myst series offered.
The puzzles were simple and were more of 'hunt' than a solve...but it was entertaining...that's what I want...to be entertained. This is a marvelous game for first time adventure game players. The quality is very good...and with the patch (along with playing in 98' compatibility mode) the reaction time and controls are far more tolerable than the Myst or Drew games.
The musical score is hauntingly unforgetable and is the perfect compliment to the rich yet odd-looking graphics.
The story and the quality of the work are what drives this game. If you are looking for brain teasers or action adventures...stay away.
If you want to lose yourself in a story for a few hours...this is the way to go. Lose yourself for a while and enter a different world.
Syberia is worth the time spent...now don't forget the patch and if you are like me...also play in 98' ME compatibility mode with the patch.

I picked up this game last week. I was nostalgic for the great adventure games of years ago - King's Quest, Zork. The first thing I noticed is that great adventure games do not exist much anymore among the aisles and aisles of shoot to kill games. I searched and searched and finally found Syberia.
What a great game. Terrific story. Great graphics and music. My daughter-in-law and I spent four wonderful days having a great adventure. If you have daughters, get them this game. It's terrific for all ages and contains strongly positive messages for girls.
A "Less Boring" Way to Pass the Time

Before you buy this game, I suggest that you download the demo (Google it)! It's well-worth finding out whether you like the controls, the graphics, and the gameplay overall. This is a suggestion you should follow before you buy any computer game because it's more than likely that they have a demo for it.
Technical Problems: The installation was basic, like most other computer game installations, and took around 5-10 minutes. It is important to note that once in a while--very rarely--the game would suddenly exit out of nowhere, but this may have been caused by other factors and not necessarily the game itself. Nevertheless, it is important to save frequently. Other than that, I experienced no other technical problems.
Gameplay: The gameplay reminded me a LOT of "The Longest Journey," a legendary adventure game that I strongly recommend you play. Syberia is the typical point-and-click adventure game, but unlike in "The Longest Journey," you cannot skip through the animation of Kate running across the screen--you actually have to watch her run from point to point, which gets very tedious and time consuming. Luckily, you can still skip through the conversations line by line by right-clicking. A lot of the puzzles are trial-and-error sort of things, where you have to play around with it until you get it right. While most puzzles were fun and not very challenging, some weren't always very logical. As a result, I had to refer to the Universal Hints site a few times. Some example tasks in the game include:
- Getting a machine or gadget to work.
- Finding an item.
- Finding a way into a restricted or blocked area.
Graphics: The graphics are pretty decent--they are much better than "The Longest Journey," which came out in 2000, but they are nowhere near as nice as its sequel "Dreamfall," which came out in 2006. So all in all, the graphics are mediocre--nothing ugly but not impressive either. Unfortunately, some of the characters' movements seem unrealistic and bulky, but it doesn't bother me too much. Seeing that the game came out in 2002, it is reasonable that it is no match for today's breathtaking graphics.
Storyline: The storyline is probably the weakest part of this game, which is my biggest complaint. Although I wouldn't call it typical--I mean what other game is based on a lawyer searching for the heir of a toy factory in order to close a sale?--it isn't particularly interesting. Aside from the "twist" in the very beginning--I'm not even sure if I'd call it a twist--nothing else is added to the story that really keeps you interested. And just when the game begins to get interesting and exciting, it ENDS! I don't mean that it leaves you hanging, but rather, the journey just comes to a close, and personally, I think the ending is a little ridiculous and overly dramatic because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I felt like I had been waiting for the journey to get a little more exciting--hit the good stuff--throughout the entire game and just as it was beginning to, the game was over. Though Syberia was somewhat fun to play, it was definitely not satisfying, but maybe I'm just comparing it to "The Longest Journey" (whose storyline is infinitely more interesting, exciting, and fulfilling) too much?
Characters: Another of my complaints is that there were very few characters. In Syberia, you meet only around 20 characters or less, whereas in "The Longest Journey," you meet over 50. I wouldn't have minded not meeting many characters, but I would've liked to have more characters around, even if you couldn't talk to them. As a result, the game felt very solitary and a bit boring. It was even hard to LIKE any of the characters, even Kate. Being an 18-year-old girl, it felt hard to relate to her because she's probably in her late 20's or early 30's, with a hard-to-like fiancée--she was like my 30-something-year-old cousin whom I'm not very fond of. Nonetheless, I still managed to sort of care about her towards the end and there was some good character development.
OVERVIEW
Strong points: Smooth gameplay with little to no problems, simple navigation, decent puzzles
Needs work: The storyline is weak and rather bland and there are too few, likeable characters. They should also incorporate a way to skip the animation for her running across the screen--it's pretty annoying.
My opinion: It's a good way to pass the time because the gameplay is fairly decent and entertaining, but just as it starts getting exciting, the game is over, leaving you feeling unsatisfied, though not hanging. It's a different dissatisfaction from the one that you get after you finish "Dreamfall," which simply leaves you with the worst cliffhanger possible, because at least the game itself was still gratifying in the gameplay--exciting, fun, challenging--whereas Syberia was just a less boring way of passing time. I was a little disappointed because I had heard such great things about this adventure game, but unfortunately, I'd have to say you'd better spend your money on "The Longest Journey," "Dreamfall" (if you can handle cliffhangers), and the Nancy Drew series. If you've already gone through that, and seriously need more, THEN think about Syberia.

I can't believe there are people who think that Syberia is
better than The Longest Journey. It does not even come close!!!
Well, the graphics are beautiful and better than TLJ but that's about it.
Syberia had a good story at the start. However, it failed to develop the story
like in TLJ. The many characters in the Syberia were not interesting but rather annoying.
The worst is the Ending; I could have come up with a better one, seriously.
Anyway, if u have never played The Longest Journey, you may not know what I am talking about. So do yourself a favor and GET TLJ instead of Syberia. And to the people who already owned the Syberia, get TLJ and paly it; u will see for youself why THE LONGEST JOURNEY IS STILL NUMBER ONE.
Too much hype

Where did all the great ratings come from? Did they actually play Syberia? I found this game a true yawner - over simplistic and dull. I paid 20 dollars, might as well finish it type of game. It should have been named Almost Syberia since you never actually get there without buying the sequel. I now need my own wind up key for a train to oblivian since this game drove me mad.
I believe the Adventure Game developers need to quit wasting their time along with ours and come out with a real 'adventure' game. A game with great graphics, great interaction and mind boggling puzzles (without the use of hint/cheats). I'll pay the extra 10-20 dollars for it!
