A "Less Boring" Way to Pass the Time

Before you buy this game, I suggest that you download the demo (Google it)! It's well-worth finding out whether you like the controls, the graphics, and the gameplay overall. This is a suggestion you should follow before you buy any computer game because it's more than likely that they have a demo for it.
Technical Problems: The installation was basic, like most other computer game installations, and took around 5-10 minutes. It is important to note that once in a while--very rarely--the game would suddenly exit out of nowhere, but this may have been caused by other factors and not necessarily the game itself. Nevertheless, it is important to save frequently. Other than that, I experienced no other technical problems.
Gameplay: The gameplay reminded me a LOT of "The Longest Journey," a legendary adventure game that I strongly recommend you play. Syberia is the typical point-and-click adventure game, but unlike in "The Longest Journey," you cannot skip through the animation of Kate running across the screen--you actually have to watch her run from point to point, which gets very tedious and time consuming. Luckily, you can still skip through the conversations line by line by right-clicking. A lot of the puzzles are trial-and-error sort of things, where you have to play around with it until you get it right. While most puzzles were fun and not very challenging, some weren't always very logical. As a result, I had to refer to the Universal Hints site a few times. Some example tasks in the game include:
- Getting a machine or gadget to work.
- Finding an item.
- Finding a way into a restricted or blocked area.
Graphics: The graphics are pretty decent--they are much better than "The Longest Journey," which came out in 2000, but they are nowhere near as nice as its sequel "Dreamfall," which came out in 2006. So all in all, the graphics are mediocre--nothing ugly but not impressive either. Unfortunately, some of the characters' movements seem unrealistic and bulky, but it doesn't bother me too much. Seeing that the game came out in 2002, it is reasonable that it is no match for today's breathtaking graphics.
Storyline: The storyline is probably the weakest part of this game, which is my biggest complaint. Although I wouldn't call it typical--I mean what other game is based on a lawyer searching for the heir of a toy factory in order to close a sale?--it isn't particularly interesting. Aside from the "twist" in the very beginning--I'm not even sure if I'd call it a twist--nothing else is added to the story that really keeps you interested. And just when the game begins to get interesting and exciting, it ENDS! I don't mean that it leaves you hanging, but rather, the journey just comes to a close, and personally, I think the ending is a little ridiculous and overly dramatic because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I felt like I had been waiting for the journey to get a little more exciting--hit the good stuff--throughout the entire game and just as it was beginning to, the game was over. Though Syberia was somewhat fun to play, it was definitely not satisfying, but maybe I'm just comparing it to "The Longest Journey" (whose storyline is infinitely more interesting, exciting, and fulfilling) too much?
Characters: Another of my complaints is that there were very few characters. In Syberia, you meet only around 20 characters or less, whereas in "The Longest Journey," you meet over 50. I wouldn't have minded not meeting many characters, but I would've liked to have more characters around, even if you couldn't talk to them. As a result, the game felt very solitary and a bit boring. It was even hard to LIKE any of the characters, even Kate. Being an 18-year-old girl, it felt hard to relate to her because she's probably in her late 20's or early 30's, with a hard-to-like fiancée--she was like my 30-something-year-old cousin whom I'm not very fond of. Nonetheless, I still managed to sort of care about her towards the end and there was some good character development.
OVERVIEW
Strong points: Smooth gameplay with little to no problems, simple navigation, decent puzzles
Needs work: The storyline is weak and rather bland and there are too few, likeable characters. They should also incorporate a way to skip the animation for her running across the screen--it's pretty annoying.
My opinion: It's a good way to pass the time because the gameplay is fairly decent and entertaining, but just as it starts getting exciting, the game is over, leaving you feeling unsatisfied, though not hanging. It's a different dissatisfaction from the one that you get after you finish "Dreamfall," which simply leaves you with the worst cliffhanger possible, because at least the game itself was still gratifying in the gameplay--exciting, fun, challenging--whereas Syberia was just a less boring way of passing time. I was a little disappointed because I had heard such great things about this adventure game, but unfortunately, I'd have to say you'd better spend your money on "The Longest Journey," "Dreamfall" (if you can handle cliffhangers), and the Nancy Drew series. If you've already gone through that, and seriously need more, THEN think about Syberia.

Very relaxing game to play. Beautiful scenery and fun to watch when I feel like concentrating. Not a lot of action, but it never claimed to be an action game, so it doesn't matter - the art left me feeling like I was somewhere else anyways.

I have to say that Syberia and Syberia 2 are one of the best PC games ever done. I have bought it multiple times as I usually give it away to people to have them try it. I will probably be buying another copy soon. Again, best PC game ever!!!
The people move in real slow motion.

I cannot get past the first scene because the main character moves around in real slow motion. It's terrible. It takes her a minute to "run" across the room which is not very big at all.
I don't know what's wrong with this game but I know it's not my computer. There are 3 different ways to install it and I've tried all 3. I tried changing the setting and everything. I cannot get it to play right. I would not recommend this game.

The title of my review says it all. The game is beautiful, the concept is interesting, there's decent character development, and the puzzles aren't insanely difficult (I've had a harder time with some of the Nancy Drew games). But, just as you're really getting into the story and starting to get excited about what happens next, BANG! Done. Just done. The last couple of chapters really get one hooked on the idea of figuring it all out, too bad it's over so abruptly. My husband and I actually said "What?!?!? No way!!!" when the credits came on the screen. And then we sat dumbfounded and watched the credits, just in case, but to no avail.
I still give it 3 overall stars because it was good while it lasted, and worth playing.I have not yet played Syberia 2, so I don't know how well they fit together. But you may want to keep the second one close so when the first game ends, it's not such a frustrating shock.

This game is what got me started with Adventure games. It is the BEST. I loved it & I also loved Syberia II. The creators did an amazing job & I would love it if they had made more like this. Very "french" in the rendering of their environments, which is not bad, because overall, this game is a great adventure.
Amazing!

This game is by far one of the best I've played. The music and graphics are one thing to rave about, but the storyline is exceptional! Plus, it is not hard to run since it is compatible with older computers.
Only problem was the endless random clues, but those were easily found. I never got bored with this game, truly great!

I wanted to add a review from a different perspective. I am always on the look out for adventure games that I can enjoy with my daughter. This requires several things, like a person that can be seen, lively interaction with other characters, fun but not too complex puzzles, interesting scenery and story line. I found all the above in this game. It may not be the best in the world, but the story line and game play gave my daughter and I lots of fun times, and kept her excited and involved. The same can be said for Syberia II.

For those with a P4 or faster processor, or one that uses hyperthreading you will need the SP3 patch for the game. My instructions stated that the patch had been included on disc 2...but it wasn't. After doing an extensive search of both discs and finding no patch or folder containing a patch...I downloaded the patch from the site, installed it and played with it and in 98/ME compatibility mode simultaneously. I have a P4 @ 3.2 Ghz and Kate was moving so slow...it was painful. I needed both solutions and with them both I had a fairly good game without any hitches, glitches or crashes.
I purchased Syberia 2 years ago as a 9.99 jewel case bargain. After playing Myst and its sequels, I didn't think I ever wanted to play an adventure game again. Needless to say, I'm not an adventure gamer at heart. Due to the lack of games written for the PC (as opposed to the now all too familiar 'adapted' PC games from consoles) I needed something new to play and this was what I was down to.
I installed the complete 1.1 GB game and it played well. I was very impressed with the quality and construction for a 2002 game.
The graphics were stunning and slightly grotesque...yet I found them much more engaging then anything the Myst series offered.
The puzzles were simple and were more of 'hunt' than a solve...but it was entertaining...that's what I want...to be entertained. This is a marvelous game for first time adventure game players. The quality is very good...and with the patch (along with playing in 98' compatibility mode) the reaction time and controls are far more tolerable than the Myst or Drew games.
The musical score is hauntingly unforgetable and is the perfect compliment to the rich yet odd-looking graphics.
The story and the quality of the work are what drives this game. If you are looking for brain teasers or action adventures...stay away.
If you want to lose yourself in a story for a few hours...this is the way to go. Lose yourself for a while and enter a different world.
Syberia is worth the time spent...now don't forget the patch and if you are like me...also play in 98' ME compatibility mode with the patch.

I enjoy this type of PC game. Like Myst and its sequals, I prefer solving puzzles and something wiht a story line throughout the game. And this game takes the player from start to a fun conclusion.
