If it was a film, it would've won the Oscar.

When this game was released in 2002, it was the most imaginative story I'd heard all year. And it was a video game! The same medium that is flamed by Hollywood as the bastion for all evil in modern filmdom, had upstaged every novel concept by Hollywood that year.

Even the opening is cool. How many games begin with a funeral procession at a small town in the French Alps...? This is no typical funeral procession, however, since its entire entourage consists of clockwork automatons, made by the toy factory of the late Anna Volalberg. "You," Kate Walker, have been sent to have the surviving owner of her failing company sign on the dotted line, and sell all a$$ets to a prestigious client. Trouble is, now that Anna is gone, that ownership lies with her brother Hans, whose whereabouts are unknown. It is your mission to trace his life since leaving this small town, and find him.

I think what really sold me with Syberia is its overall message; what makes us "human," compared to the life-sized windup toys Kate comes across throughout her journey? As Kate's mystery progresses, she gets called on her trusty cellular phone by her friends, relatives, and colleagues back home, each of whom is either a total dimwit, or too obsessed with their "routine" to truly show any compassion for Kate. Each call seems not as interested in Kate's well being as much as how quickly she can return, so their daily routines can be complete again. This is Kate's life to a "T," whose most frequent phone call is from her boss, demanding her to "do what you're told," as if she were a wind-up toy herself. Will this assignment be a turning point for her? You bet; and that's half the fun.

This was one of my favorite games of 2002. Not as action-packed as Jedi Knight 2 or as comical as Freedom Force, though very cerebral and as close to "interactive novel" as a game has come since The Longest Journey. I loved it. I'm sure you will too.

Wow, what a game!

I hadn't heard all the hype about this game that the other reviewers keep referring to, so maybe my expectations weren't as high as theirs. I found this game to be astounding, especially in terms of character development and visual effects.

The opening scene set the stage with a parade of robots (excuse me, automotons) marching in a funeral parade. It was like nothing I had ever seen before in a game. All the visuals were excellent; I found myself wanting to go to Valadilene and Barokstadt.

There were things about the main character, Kate Walker, that bugged me. She was a wimp who wouldn't go in the water and was scared of birds. However, she made a huge change by the end of the game and, while she was still a wimp, she wasn't intimidated by other people. I don't think I've ever seen this kind of character development in an adventure game before; usually the character is the same at the end as they were at the beginning. This was more like reading an interactive book, where people grow and change.

The puzzles weren't annoyingly easy or annoyingly hard. They were logical and solvable. Most of them were inventory-based and mechanical. I did get annoyed by the locked doors and dead-end paths (if I can't go through that door, don't put a door there!). Like some of the other reviewers, I found the game to be too short and wasn't expecting the ending to happen when it did. When the credits started rolling, I thought they must be joking! Kate hadn't even reached her destination yet.

The bottom line is that this game is innovative and intriguing, and it's set a new bar for adventure games. I hope the sequel can live up to this one.

Absolutely Beautifull !!

If you love adventure games (just plane point and click adventure games), you must absolutely get your hands in this one. Be aware though, there are no messy or irrational puzzles!! Everything here makes perfect sense and your only weapons will be your wits, accute observation and care to details. But Syberia is not about puzzles, it is about telling a nice, dense and beautifull story about self grow and discovery. Along "The Longest Journey" these is which I, humbly, beleive are the adventure games all about: telling a story. And it has to be bright, beautifull, original and, for GOD sake, MAKE SENSE!....
I hope every old and young fashion adventure gamer would support this game. You will never regret it!!

The answer to an adventure game player's wishes!

I had just about given up hope that anyone would ever produce another decent adventure game -- and then along came Syberia. Gorgeous, yes, but with thought and intelligence behind it. Topnotch writing (and translations), acting, plot, puzzles, humor, and ... well, I can't say enough good things. More, more, more! Publishers, are you listening? Make them like this!!

An artistic triumph

One of the most visually stylistic, artfully rendered games ever created seems to come from a man that doesen't neccesarily excell at what he does..Sokal has the heart of a director, be it video games, film, or life...His vision of the games locals and angles they are presented through shows his professional eye for composition and cinematography..It is for these virtues that Syberia exceeds expectations of traditional adventure games and hoists itself into the realm of high art. More developers in the gaming industry should take notice of the importance of vision and style acredited to this game

Simply Incredible !!!!!

I have played some of the best and by far I cannot stop thinking of how much this adventure game meant to me. So you be the judge, these are the words it meant to me. Gorgeous, compelling and overall amazing!!!!

I would recommend this adventure to anyone with an open imagination and the patience to solve puzzles and clues. There are various walkthrough's free online if you get stuck. It took me about a week to complete the entire game playing a few hours a night and perhaps a little longer on the weekend.

Enjoy I am on to Syberia 2 and then Paradise.!!!!!!

Absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!

No PC owner should miss this game. It's simply the best game of 2002. The ending alone gives the game five stars. It's just unbelievable and sets the story for the sequel which will come out this year. DO NOT miss this game by any chance. And as for the bottom line i must note that this game has one of the most original and brilliant plots in the history of videogames.

The game is captivating with highly developed graphics and scenery. The puzzles are moderately challenging which does not make it impossible--but still keeps it interesting.

The ending was a major let-down. The game begs for a sequel. It's a decent game without anything that might be offensive to different sensibilities. I'd love to see more games like this on the market.

Pre-rendered? Yes, but very good!

This game has the probability of making a great series. The backgrounds and such are the best I haved seen from a pre-rendered and even some non-prerendered games. The animations are a bit lacking in the form of that there aren't that many different things you can do... You can walk, run, pick things up, pull out your cell phone, and open doors. That's pretty much all the animations to the protaganist.

People that loved the Journeyman Project, Buried in Time, or Legacy of Time, will love this title. There is also more information coming up about a sequel already.

This title is a must for all those that love the adventure genre. Just don't be dissapointed when you get bored with the few actions. The backgrounds are still as beutiful as ever.
