Great Game!

I'm going to start off this review by saying that this game is NOT for everybody. If you're not a big fan of RPG's, then stay away from this game.

One of the big draws of this game is the deepness. There is tons of stuff to do. However, I found a lot of the sidequests to feel somewhat repetitive.

I'm also going to say this now, before I forget. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MACHINE CAPABLE OF RUNNING THIS GAME!!!! Too many times my friend's have complained of not being to run this game. Why? They had old graphics cards, slow processors, not enough RAM etc. So make sure you compare the system requirements. Even after that, there seems to be a lot of people that have top of the line machines, and are still encountering problems.

Anyway, the character creation system is very deep, yet suprisingly simple. You can make a multitude of character builds, all of which fun to play.

The only things I can think of that would make this game better, would be better camera angles, and the ability the more easily control your teammates. Switching back and forth can get clumsy and confusing at times, especially amidst a battle.

Other than these few faults, this is a very enjoyable game, from start to finish.

great!

This game takes place about 40 years after the war with Exar Kun, and is well worth it, especially for the history of the Sith, and insight into the Sandpeople and Wookies.

I really enjoyed playing this game, although I needed a walkthrough to help me. It is full of quests and sub-quests, and very interactive. I enjoyed the different characters in my party, and the fact you could choose which side of the force you preferred. I did not care for the level limit at 20, but I understand that KOTOR II has no level limit.

I rate this a 'must have' for any SW fan, especially those who like RPG games.

A Must Have Game

When I first started playing this game, I thought "WOW!" This has to be one of the best if not the best game that I have ever played. The storyline is unique and can be different everytime you play (although major events do not change). The game is filled with characters who react to words you say as well as actions you do. The light and dark side choice allows for massive replayabilty which makes up for a missing multiplayer mode. The sound was excellent and dialogs excellent. There are a few bugs in the game but don't let that stop you from buying the Game of the Year. Its not just for Star Wars fans.

P.S. Look for the sequel later this year!

Better than the last two movies

And not just because there's no Jar-Jar Binks!

Lucasarts and Bioware deliver a tremendous RPG/adventure game that is more fun, makes more sense, and includes better acting than either of the prequel movies.

Computer games often stumble badly when it comes to the story and to voiceover work. Too often some programmer cobbles together some senseless mess of a plot, or the developer gets the janitor and the receptionist to record some voiceovers. Not so with Knights of the Old Republic. The story and voice work, as well as the sound design, really immerse you in the Star Wars universe. Even the background music is fantastic. You may find yourself genuinely moved and surprised at times - a true rarity in the world of computer gaming.

Of course, gameplay is key, and Knights of the Old Republic delivers. It may take a little while to get used to the combat system, particularly if you're used to FPS games. However, it's easy to learn, and you'll be doing combat like a pro in no time. Getting through the game can be challenging, but not so tough that it becomes tedious or boring. You'll easily find yourself sitting down with this for hours on end. And when you finish, you can switch your Force alignment and play again in a totally different way. It's like two games in one!

At this bargain price, this is a no-brainer. Buy two and give one to a friend.

Best RPG in the Star War Universe

Role-playing games (RPG) usually cater to a specific group of people. Good RPG put an emphasis on good story-telling, plots, and supporting characters. These are the main reasons why the Baldur's Gate series are SO darn good! KOTOR carries the same flavor that makes Baldur's Gate good, while adding great 3D graphics, special effects, and taking place in the Star Wars Universe. I actually end up caring deeply for several of the characters, and that is a sign of a good RPG.

You start off picking 1 out of 3 classes, soldier, scout and scoudrel. Each class has a male/female variant, so in reality, you have only 6 choices, and they are all humans. You'll eventually become a Jedi, and that is where the fun really kicks off! Just like in Baldur's Gate, you'll eventually become one very, very powerful character by the end of the game. It is indeed a sight to behold.

Any Star Wars fan should get this game, simply because this game illustrates the Jedi combat, different worlds and cultures so well. In the Wookie planet of Kashyyk, I really do feel like the trees are several miles high. During combat, your Jedi character will effectively reflect blaster shots with his/her light saber (just like in the movies). You can also pretend to be Darth Vader by using those awesome telepathic choke holds.

As for negatives, my biggest gripe is that the game really discourage you from being evil! Among your supporting characters (9 total), only 2 of them are evil. Hence whenever you do something bad, the other 7 will give you a hard time. Why didn't Bioware give me a couple more evil side-characters to even it out (4 good, 4 evil, and 1 neutral would be nice). That way, I can have a decent supporting cast to do evil deeds. I think Baldur's Gate did a much better job of having a more balanced supporting case (alignment-wise). There are other reasons too, but they are spoiler-ish.

In terms of bugs, I did not encounter any major problems in the PC version (with Patch 1.3). I have an average platform: Athlon XP, Geforce4 Ti4200, 512MB RAM. I was able to run at 1024x768 very smoothly. If you're having technical problems technical, visit the Bioware forums first. The people there really know their stuff. Overall, this is a "must-have" for Star Wars fan. In fact, it is better than the 2nd version (the Sith Lords). Get this one FIRST!

RPG - Light or Dark?

I was hesitant in purchasing it but was sucked in from the start. It's the best feel of roll playing that I've ever experienced in a video game. The graphics are beautiful. The story is intense and engrossing. You really get to make choices and there is more than one right answer. Back in the day if you liked the first Deus Ex you've got to try this game, it's been that long since I've been completely sucked into a game.

You might have to get used to the battle interface and controlling more than one character in battle does have its own learning curve. Nothing that takes too long and before you know it, pausing a battle and giving commands to be executed between your characters is exhilarating and second nature.

Choose your path, really. I am still surprised how much I'm tempted to turn to the Dark Side. They even sneak little touches into quests that slowly but surely draw you away from the Light. I'm already chomping at the bit to run through it from the beginning to play differently.

Do Not Buy This Game...

At Least not unless you want to spend every waking hour of every day for a couple of weeks playing it.

Frankly, the few Star Wars games I've tried have been garbage. In fact, since Empire Strikes Back, the movie series has been mostly garbage. I feel similarly about most RPGs. Haven't really got into more than 2 or 3 since the dreaded Gold Box series.

I bought this game mostly because a few people I knew had raved about it when it came out on the XBox.

The graphics are solid, the voice acting top notch, and the story and characters are far more engaging and multi-dimensional than anything Lucas concocted for Episodes I & II.

The game plays as part adventure, part RPG, which is part of the charm. The plot is deep, and engaging, yet the game loses some of its scripted feel with somewhat open ended gameplay, which keeps it fresh.

The best part of the game, in my mind, is the game's clear focus on dark side and light side, and how your actions and words guide you down one path.

Forget the words of people who whine about RPGs and replay ability. I'd never seen an RPG I wanted to play more than once prior to KOTOR. This one, however, you'll want to play twice. Play it once dark side and once light. For more fun, play it as female and male, and enjoy the differences in interaction with the romantic lead.

All in all a clever game, and I greatly look forward to the sequel.

Would have been, Should have been......

This game could could have and should have been the best game of the year, as it stands it is one of the most bug filled crash prone games I have ever played. Knights has a great story line, very good graphics, and a decent combat system, but the massive number of bugs kill the game. I rarely get more than 5 minutes of crash-free playing time, even with the patch released shortly after release, but much worse is the area curruption bugs that were left in. 4 hours into the game I try to enter a plot required area and the game crashed to a frozen menu. Now every time I try to go into that area with that save I am kicked to the menu. I cannot progress the game when that happens which really kills the game. I have worked for a beta testing company, and I can tell you these kinds of bugs should never make it into release. I really would like to say this is a great game, and it could have been, but it is dead right now as I will not play a game where there is only a slight possibility that I will be able to progress the plot at any given point. This game should have been great, but as it is it is 50 bucks wasted. Maybe around march it will be good, but till then don't buy it.

Sure To Beat Jedi Outcast

This game looks really cool. Knights of the Old Republic takes place 4,000 years before the first Star Wars film, in the middle of a war between the Jedi and the Sith. You have a fully customizable character, and you always have an older sibling of the opposite gender who is a skilled Jedi Knight. Eventually you will become one, too. But before that, it's you and whatever blasters you may find or pick up. Also, you can make a group that can consist of Wookiees, Jedi, droids, Twi'Leks, or whatever is present and strikes your fancy. You'll travel to many worlds in your ship, the Ebon Hawk, very similar to the Millenium Falcon. En route, however you'll face Sith fighters. This game looks very exciting.

Best Star Wars game ever.

I'll admit. I hate star wars games for the most part. Although Jedi Outkast and Jedi Academy were pretty cool, this game just blows it off the face of the earth. Everything about this game makes it awesome. The fact you can determine the outcome of the game is just straight genius. The lightside took me exactly 30 hours to beat, while the dark side only took me 16 hours, in total, I spent 46 hours in this game. I learned alot more doing the dark-side. Just the overall game, like how to work the battle system better, how to use certain force powers better - and what the feats and so forth do. The Dark Side was alot more fun. I wont spoil any of it, but theres nothing cooler then being able to actually kill some of your allies ;)

Anyways - not much to say except for awesome. If you like a game with substance, good storyline, and above average graphics - this has all of that plus more. One thing to note is this IS A PROGRESSIVE game. You have to spend time on it to have your character become better. If your like my brother, and want all the force powers and a lightsabre on the very first level, and be all mighty and powerful and just wanna kill stuff - this is not the game. Look elsewhere if you want that type of mindless crap.
