Outstanding Game! ...Can't wait for the sequal!!

I found the character dev. to be very engaging. I greatly enjoyed the plot progression and found the visual details and appeal of the many unique levels to be fantastic...even awesome at times! It provided me with countless hours of enjoyment the first, second and even the third times through!! There's so much to the individual character story-lines and the richness of the worlds you are able to explore, that there's just no way you can experience everything the game has to offer in just one time through!

The only aspect of the game that took a little getting used to for me, was KOTOR's style of gameplay in relation to the fight sequences. Having had recently finished playing "Jedi Knight-Jedi Academy," I was a little surprised that, unlike 'Jedi Academy,' the developers of 'KOTOR' handled the fight sequence interface the way they did. Basically, instead of more direct strike-by-strike 'real-time' control of your character, as you have in 'Jedi Academy,' you select from available weapons and/or force powers, along with the desired style of the attack for both the main character and her/his companions through 'option windows'. The player manages the actions of the characters under her/his control in that manor throughout the duration of each fight. What I found, is that it left me with less direct interaction with my opponents during the fight sequences, however, it allowed me greater control of my entire party during battle. It only took me getting through the initial 'training/tutorial' sequence at the onset of the game before I quickly became accustomed to KOTOR's style of gameplay and had been completely pulled into the whole experience of the game.

I highly recommend this game and rate it with a full 5 stars, without any hesitation!!!

Nothing I say here can give KOTOR any justice

This was definatly the best game I have ever played. I mean that seriously. I played for every second I had, playing for a grand total of 30 hours. The characters are amazingly complete, each having it's own backstory which ties in with the plot perfectly. All of it fits in place. You will see what a good plot this truely is when you discover why you are really having visions (this is difficult to put in words without giving anything away). I have to say that chosing your actions to lean to the dark or light side was a brilliant idea, though following the path of the light gets increasingly difficult to pick what to say (I havent the slightest clue about the dark side). Anyway good luck with...uh...discovering your destiny.

One of the best games since long...

The last game I enjoyed that much was Neverwinter Nights from Bioware, and after finishing the last Neverwinter Nights expansion pack find this to be a refreshing new RPG.

This game is geared to all those Star Wars fans and also the casual RPG/Universal gamer. The puzzles shouldn't be to difficult, depending what kind of player you are (RPG players should have it relatively easy throughout the game), and combat isn't too difficult either (I guess for those who like challenge, you don't have to select a full party when venturing out into the wilderness (maybe there is also a setting : I didn't check that!).

Combat is very straight forward. You see an enemy, choose your weapons (either ranged or melee), either throw a grenade or simply begin slashing/shooting. Although the combat scenes are beautifully animated, there is not much for your character to do (well this isn't to different from many games).

However, I think you shouldn't focus entirely on combat. There is a lot more to do, like hacking into the computer system and take down the turrets and patrol droids. Or like disabling mines, let Mission collect these. Then put her into stealth, walk up to the Rancor place 5 mines in front of the monster (this is an alternative to putting the bomb and the scent into the pile), you get 750 XP doing it that way instead of the normal 200 XP!

In contrast to other RPG's, like NWN, the story is maybe a little slack. Now, this doesn't mean there is no story like in Dungeons Siege or its average, but its not as intense as in NWN latest expansion pack. Nevertheless, it still is a very good story (4/5 stars).

In-between there are also several smaller games, such as a Swoop Race (which was fun but easy even for a non-racer like me), a Space shooter (also easy - you just have to target close to the target to hit it), and a Pazack Card game (similar to Black Jack only galactic version) to get some extra credits.

The game creates an incredible atmosphere and is pretty addictive. It is very similar to NWN, yet different in a few aspects. Its rated Teen, I think also appropriately. PC Gamer gave it 91%, again I think appropriately.

To sum up, if you ever wanted to get that Star Wars feeling, play this game. It offers beautiful graphics and ambience.

Oh, yeah, let the force be with you!

NOTE: I had enormous difficulties running this game at first. It was slow. It crashed by virtually ever slight move. I decided to re-install my Windows system, and it worked perfectly ever since. I usually use Linux, so can't really tell what the problem may be, but after some time its just wise to reinstall Windows. If you notice difficulties already in the beginning, don't play on, make sure your system works first!

Bad for your grades

The only thing that stops me from playing this game 24/7 is my homework, and that doesn't always stop me. The storyline in itself is enough to want you to keep on playing, as unearthing the backstories of the different characters is practically a game on its own. The storyline is compelling enough that I've read stories (go fanfictition!) written about the KoToR storyline!!!
The battles are amazing; force powers, different weapons, and different characters can give completely different flavors to each one.
The graphics are great; so good, in fact, that my computer (it's a laptop, so I can't change the video card) can't take it. I had to turn off the shadows and grass so that my computer wouldn't crash when I tried to go to Dantooine.
It does freeze up a bit, but since I got rid of the grass and shadows (you can still see grass, though), I haven't had too many problems.
Knights of the Old Republic is a must-have for any Star Wars fan!!!

Holy crap on a stick.

Let me get this straight.... I really wanted to like this game, and did, for awhile at least. Stories great, great characters, blah blah blah. None of that matters, because, you're not going to be playing the game. This thing is so full of holes its unplayable, if not a first, eventually. I started out fine, wondering what all the bug complaints were about, but now, I can't even play. My games crash upon loading. Any bioware/lucasarts is no help... support for this game only exists in the form of others gamers just messing wiht their machines hoping somethign will work. Spend your money elsewhere, or wait a year till they fix this thing.

I'm not sure what this game is meant to be.

It claims to be an RPG, and it certainly bears some of the characteristics of that genre. There are stats, but they are mostly hidden, appearing only when levelling up or examining equipment capabilities. There are three different career paths to choose at the start, each of which affects the gameplay in subtle ways. Multi-threaded conversations, litter your path to success, and through choosing your actions you can develop a dark side, or a light side, eventually ending up as a Jedi (of course).

But why does it feel like I'm playing someone's idea of RPG-lite?

The game has been very popular, picking up great user and pundit reviews all over the place, and it's this fact that gives away the plot. This is an RPG that people who never played an RPG before can play without it taxing their trigger happy brains too much.

The big problem with RPG's is that they are up against the expectations of a marketplace swamped by first person shoot 'em ups (like Half Life and it's thousand clones). Where many RPG's come a cropper is when the combat starts. Given the design constraints and resource allocation problems in any RPG, it's difficult to produce a game that does everything an RPG has to do, and gives a satisfying combat experience.

So, BioWare have cleverly avoided the entire issue by taking combat out of the player's hands and giving it to the computer to sort out. Spot an enemy and your team goes into fight mode. On the default setting the game pauses, supposedly to let the player "issue orders", but the player can change this so that the team just begins attacking without any player input.

This allows the combat to be more or less scripted. The play can always be paused to issue an order to use a med kit or chuck a grenade, but it takes so long for your character to do this that by the time the action is carried out the order is no longer likely to be appropriate.

It's a clever solution, and it lends the game a very unique dynamic. It's not quite the tactical cerebral experience that a true turn based game provides, where med packs are always used in time and shots are always fired under the player's control. Neither is it the adrenalin soaked rush of the average shooter.

In fact, the truth is it's neither one thing nor the other, and whilst that might appeal to those who are looking for something different it will test the enthusiasm of large numbers of RPG fans.

I've read a lot about how good the graphics are in this game. I'm not sure I understand what people are talking about. When compared to the likes of FarCry, KOTOR looks positively bland. The levels are all quite small, requiring short loading screens between each one, but there is very little going on to make the player stop and stare.

Exploration is decidedly linear, with each planet being a self contained unit. This has more of the feel of an adventure game than a true RPG, and the free roaming style of Morrowind and Gothic 2 has been replaced by a controlled limitation on freedom of movement. No chance here to examine each nook and cranny at leisure. You follow the script, in the set order, or you don't progress.

That's not to say there aren't any options in the manner of progressing. You can adopt a variety of strategies - well, two really. You can talk, or you can fight. But because character interaction is fairly scripted, there's little in the way of opportunity to develop a coherent and personal strategy for progress.

The interface seems a little clumsy too, especially the inventory system, which is unnecessarily complex, with separate character and team inventories that don't really want to co-exist easily. I counted several more mouse clicks than was strictly needed to change from one weapon to another.

If you can get it running OK, then this is an average game. I can only imagine it has such a high profile because it has that ever so sought after Star Wars license, but without that branding I have to suggest that this game wouldn't be setting anyone's world on fire.

Competent, but not innovative.

Caution: the PC version is buggy

Be careful about buying the PC version of this game. There are lots of people having problems getting the graphics to work properly. Looks like they rushed this game out the door for the holiday rush. Go check the Bioware Forums and/or Gamespot if you don't believe me.

On the bright side, if you can get it to work, it's an awesome game.

But until they get it patched up, I just can't recommend it.

A great game for xbox and pc

I have no doubt that knights of the old republic is great its just that this game is not good for xbox. This game was made for pc and since the graphics will be better on pc I recomend waiting and buying this game on pc rather than xbox.

Do not buy.

I bought this game before Christmas and my word of warning. This is a BETA product. There are so many issues that the game will not even run, it crashes right in the beginning menus. My PC meets or exceeds every requirement. Supposedly, this is a very fun game on the XBOX, but I wouldn't know.

Don't send your money to Bioware. They should be sued for this disaster, they rushed an unfinished product before the holidays.

Not for little kids!

Being an avid fan of simulations such as IL2: Forgotten Battles and LOMAC, I was looking for something a little out of my comfort zone. Well, after seeing the final SW movie, Episode III, I thought I'd give the Star War games a try. Not wanting to spend my money on the KOTOR 2, I went w/ the bargin KOTOR 1 just in case the game is a stinker. Well, I couldn't be more surprised and happy from this purchase.

This game is completely different from what I'm used to playing. For me, simulations are the most fun. However, I have to re-evaluate my thinking. This game sucked me up into the story line like no other. It reminded me of creating my own destiny (or creating a new SW film). Everything about the game was fascinating and exciting. Some of the younger folks on here will disagree w/ the use of exciting though. This is definitely not a hack/slash/frag fest like the cartoony Quake/Halflife games. This game has so much more depth and feel than any of those 3d shooters, it's hard to describe.

Over all, if you're over the age of 25 and are a SW fan, you'll love this game. For the younger, and more impatient crowd, you may want to pass on this one. ie Novel vs comic book.
