Well this is a surprise for most gamers, a Star Wars game that dosent suck.
Back in the beginging of the game you wake up on a crashing ship the Endire Spare and barly escape, you and pretty-boy Carth Onasi land on the planet Taris, a world full of taxation, and predigust. Your mission is to find the hottie jedi Bastila and escape with you crew on a smugguling ship to get to the farmland Dantooine and train under the jedi masters. Then there is a suspisious ruins in the north-east and that is when your mission begins.
The award-winning 'Kinghts of the Old Republic' is the perfect game, with smooth viuals, holy crap plot twistes, 7 enormus worlds and 9 party members, it isen't hard to see why KOTOR did get 35 gaming awards including the elusive Game of the Year Award. For all of you who read EGM(electronic gaming monthly) it got dubed platinum.

This game alone is like three or four or seven games in one. The size of it is astounding and makes for hours of endless fun.
The customization of your character including what they wear and use is always fun, and the item hunting like in Diablo games is entertaining. The way you interact with characters and make decisions to change the entire storyline is amazing, but I'm a newbie to the RPG gaming world.
Battles lack the speed and realism of an actual SW battle, or something like in Jedi Knight or the ground battles in Rebel Strike. Then again, I hate the battles in Jedi Knight games. Especially in the online games, with all those friggin h4X0r people who play the game since its released and prey on us regular people with their stupid Force-push off a cliff as soon as you spawn or choke you before you get to attack, or kill you with one lightsaber swipe *end rant*
The battles are still fun, with choosing what to attack with, the most effective way to kill and which weapon etc. It's like a third person view of Diablo II, with more options and animations etc.
The only graphics issue I don't like is that despite the fact that you can hear your character talk when you send them to go do something like unlock a door or something, but they're mute during cutscenes. Most especially when your ship is under attack, and the subtitle says "What's That?" with your char completely silent.
A Major Disappointment.

I had anticipated the release of this game for so long this winter. With a pedigree of Bioware and Lucasarts, how can "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" go wrong? I envisioned myself playing this game for hours on end, much like what I did when "Baldur's Gate 2" was released a year ago. But this game is such an utter disappointment to me for many reasons.
First off, the graphics are terrible. I have a NVIDEA GeForce FX 520, and even with this above-average graphic card the game is very choppy and poor looking. The opening scene when your ship is attacked, no matter which character you pick, they all look like a horse because their teeth are showing even though their mouths are supposed to be closed. It's hideous. And then a guy enters your room and he sprints towards you, but by his animation it looks like he just went from zero to full speed in under a second flat, just to make it five feet forward. It's terrible.
Controls are another problematic area. The game handles like a shooter but it won't let you format the keyboard and mouse to the ideal shooter setting (right-click to move forward, z to strafe left, x to move backwards, and c to strafe right). It has a funky control scheme where holding down right-click and left-click moves you forward. It's awkward and not intuitive at all. You can pan the camera by holding the right-click button only, but it's not like there's anything good to look at in this Star Wars universe.
Combat is a snoozefest. Whenever you engage a hostile threat, the game automatically pauses. Okay, BG2 did this and it was effective. But the attack menu is a scroll-through command using arrows. And there's other bars for other attacks, like throwing a grenade. It's all handled like you're operating a Win XP system. Not fun at all when it's being applied to a video game.
Audio is probably the worst aspect of the PC version of this game. The voice dialogue is top-notch, and with every morsel of text spoken, you're in for a treat. But the game suffers from static noises whenever the game world becomes too busy. Blasters and sword clashes sound second rate. And upping the graphics settings (which you WILL want to do with this horrible looking game) will only increase the problems of sound. Choose your poison.
The story is supposed to be good. I never got into it because the game sucks.
In conclusion, what a let down. To everyone praising this game, at least you guys are having fun with it. It was a very big disappointment for me. Guess I have to go back to playing Temple of Elemental Evil with all it's bugs. PC RPG games really went down the toilet this year.
Peace.
Spectacular Experience

Knights of the Old Republic is truly a great game. The storyline was perfectly done, with a masterfully done twist near the end. I have never been a fan of RPG style combat systems, but this game simplified it to the point where I could enjoy it. All of the quests can be dealt with multiple ways, some of which will result in gainng light side points while other ways will result in gaining dark side points. Just because of this, it is worth playing the game at least twice: Once per each side. Currently I am on my forth run-through, and I am still discovering new things about this game.
In a nutshell, Knights of the Old Republic is a spectacular experience and a good game. I would encourage anyone reading this review to buy it RIGHT NOW.
Im not really into Star Wars but....

I got this for Xbox as a gift and I was hooked as soon as I started playing! The graphics are a bit choppy at times but the gameplay more than makes up for it. There are so many different outcomes you can choose from and the whole option of being a good guy or a bad guy is wonderful. The style goes as a usual RPG so not much action and the fight scenes are the same after awhile, but just exploring and interacting with everyone is worth it. You definitely get more than 20+ hours out of this game since you want to go back and play it over again once you beat it to see how the light or dark side ending is (they are obviously different).

What a great game. Anybody who is a star wars fan must play this game. The graphics are amazing and Stoy line is Superb. Not to mention won game of the year from 25 magazine including spike TV's Best RPG game award. I mean this game has everything for a true Star Wars fan. Visit 7 different planets, famous one including Tattoine, Kashyyyk the wookie world and a courasent alike planet called Taris. Also During the game you will get side missions. You can complete this in either Light way or the Dark Way. For ex; during the game you will have a mission to help the farmers from sand people attack. You can either choose to kill all the sand people for Dark side points or Negotiate with them to For Light side points. Also the Voice acting is supreb. And not to forget the lightsabers. You can choose from a single blade sabe to the Double bladed ones that Darth Maul used in episode 1. You can also wield Two lightsaber in Two hands. But this game will require a good graphics card. (128MB is good enough). But wont provide you the best visual experience.Anyways I wont Ruin the surprise for you. Its availabe for 20 dollars. So buy it, play it and enjoy some 40 hours of great gaming.

KOTOR is set in the distant past of the Star Wars Universe. The plot is semi-linear, letting you choose from a variety of tactics to resolve any challenge put before you. There's plenty of side quests available that aren't required, but they're usually a good idea, and they often provide extra snippets of plot along with them.
As your character completes more and more quests, depending on how you choose to solve them, you lean towards the light or the dark side of the Force. This changes both your appearance and your access to various abilities.
The graphics are slightly dated, but still pretty darn good, and the plot and RPG elements are excellent.

this is a fantastic RPG the best one I have ever played actually. It has a awsome Character creation were you choose your gender male or female and then class (your attributes are not affected by your gender) and you get to either quick create were you just pick your face and name and the computer does the rest or advanced, were you pick your skills and feats and attributes.
Also depending on what you say and do you will lean toward the light or dark side and that will alter how much certain force powers cost: if you are on the dark side, dark side powers like lightining and choke cost less but things like heal and others cost more and vice versa.
the plot is extremely good, I have played this at least 5 times and it never get's old, and I think of different things to say and different ways of doing things each time.
each Character in you company is different and has a rich deep past, that you can find out if you try to get close to them. I love the combat system it is not like most RPG's were you stand in a perfect line with your companions and the enemies line up perfectly on the other side, in this it is fast, you can still pick moves but there is no pause unless you hit the pause button, you attack and then they attack yes, but it does it in such a way that it looks more lik real fighting because they don't use the same moves every time and when the enemy attacks you you don't just stand there and get hit, you defend yourself.
There is a romance in this one which I personaly hate because i don't do that sort of thing especially not in a comp =P lol. One thing that I think is discusting and that the ppl that made this thing should be ashamed of is that if you take the clothes of ppl they have only under wear and I am talking skimpy underwear not boxers and a shirt, but for the men it isn't so bad it looks like a surfers outfit actually lol except it doesn't have the same color and the shorts and the shirt are one peice.
overall here is my rating:
Fun: 10
Replay value: 9
sound FX: 10
music: 10
plot: 12 (actually 10 but I would do 12 if I could =])
fighting action: 4 (but if compared to other RPG's not just anything it would be 8)
Overall: 8.8
one of the best

I recived KOTOR for christmas. I was skeptical - the front picture was strange to me. I popped it in, installed and started playing. Three weeks later, I was completely into it. It is one of the funnest games that I have ever played.
The missions and the completely customizable characters make this the best star wars RPG, ranking up there with World of Warcraft and other hyper-popular RPGs.

I got this game back in 2003. This is perhaps one of the best role playing games from the star wars universe. Given all of the problems with SWG went back to this game and now doing the sequel again. This game as a very good story line.
