Best RPG I've had the pleasure to play

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 0

This is the best RPG I've yet played. I only decided to write the review after playing the sequel and seeing how good KOTORI is in comparison. Graphically somewhat dated now, but still functionally pretty, especially the character models and expressions. Combat in the game is easy to learn, somewhat difficult to master. On normal I had fair difficulty on the first play-through, and then it was easier after that- but it felt like the right level of difficulty. Most important in this game, though, is the non-combat.

Depending on how you play it, about half the game is non-combat, and this is where KOTOR distinguishes itself from most games. The amount of characters, 'quests,' replayability, and non-linear gameplay is astounding. Even if there are certain things which must be done, there are many that are voluntary and the required ones can be done basically in any order. The characters available to be in the party are deep and uniformly humorous in their own ways. Having conversations with these characters yields interesting conflicts or, alternatively, amusing tidbits. Two of the characters (Jolee and HK-47) were always great for a laugh, and two others (Carth and Bastila) were very multi-layered with their own reasons for joining the fight. The characters (specifically the latter two mentioned above) also fit very well into the plot. Depending on the player-character's gender, there is an available romance. The light-side-male romance with Bastila particularly resonates with the plot-ideas of redemption. It's seldom that I actually care what happens to NPCs, but this game managed it better than most motion-pictures.

KOTOR also gives the player the real chance to be either 'light' or 'dark' sided, and provides excellent plotlines for both. I have played the game numerous times, and I can see great reasons to be each side. Furthermore, there are several 'surprises' during the course of the game, but each is done very well. After finding out these plot-twists, the game leading up to them suddenly clicks into focus and everything makes sense in a satisfying way. This persists through the entire game, and leads to satisfying endings based on the choices of the player (to be light or dark, to have a romance or not, etc.). The only con that really struck me was that the ending was a little shorter and hackneyed than it could have been. Specifically the light-side end cinematic seemed a little too happy and cheerful, and could have used some more meaningful dialogue. Still, it seems like a perfect conclusion compared to KOTORII (The Sith Lords). Anyone who has an interest in RPGs or good plots will eat this game up, probably more than once.

This is the Star Wars RPG everyone has been looking for. However, if you're a fan of Diablo II or Dungeon Siege combat, you may be disappointed at KOTR's combat. Diablo's combat consists of constantly clicking your mouse for each attack. Dugeon Siege makes your heroes attack on their own. In both cases, the combat is fast and looks good. KOTR's is basically like a turn-based attack. Your hero swings a sword, the opponent swings back, your hero swings again, so on and so forth. Kind of boring compared to the other games. However, the story is involved, the graphics are fantastic, and you can really get into the game. There are times you can have more than two party members and they actually seem to do better in combat than your own hero.

This game is a mix of the Galaxies way of living a life in the shoes of a person in that time and the jedi knight way of become a jedi and hack people up (no offensae to the imortal jk2 and jk3 because they are phenomenal games to) I bought it from amazon and immedeatly fell in love. It is simpley the best STAR WARS game ever created! (that you don't have to pay monthly fees on)

This is by far the best SW game ever. I has an intriging story with awesome graphics and music. Great game with lots of surprises. What's so great about this game is that you have total control of what happens in the game. The story line totally depends on what you do and how you handle situations presented to you. You can play this game over and over and will never be the same. This game changes its story depending on the player that you choose in the beginning of the game: male, female, etc. This game is a must not only to any SW fanatic, but to any gamer. Just the best game I've played.

This is easily the best roleplaying game experience I have had on the PC. The interface is incredible, the puzzles interesting and plot-driven, the action exciting. I'm a big fan of all Star Wars games but this is definitely my favorite so far: a must have for any Star Wars or RPG fans.

Best.....game....ever. ** DO NOT SPOIL W/THESE REVIEWS!**

Well what can i say about this game that hasn't already been said? I first found out about this game from a friend and was surprised to here my beloved Star Wars universe had entered the realm of RPGs! So i decided to research it via the internet and amazon. I loved reciveing all of the positive and honest reviews which lead me to purchase the game (hence this review honoring the game).
However i was EXTREMELY disappointed by reading a HUGE spoiler on this site that gave away probally the biggest plot twist and of the course of the game (as i recall i tried to scroll past its spolier warning (which shouldnt even be on amazon) and it was the end of the page- ahhh my eyes!) I was in disbelief, yet pushed it to the back of my head, trying not to believe it.
Going into the game detail- this is a very high end game. I have a new pc and i had to update all of my drivers several times- and then the game ran awesomly-but be prepared to go through a lil leg work at least.

This game is awesome....im sure everyone else has gone into it in full depth so i will spare a lot of the details. This game instantly blew me away and still continues to marvel me. The graphics on pc- breathtaking, the story line- so cool, i agree this is way better than the recent Episode 1+2- George Lucas and Lucasarts please listen and follow this game as an example- the overwehlming consumer love for this product is unbelieveable-this is what i picture and think of Star Wars like. The open ended ability to choose your 'fate or destiny' was original, yet i was skeptical until i popped the cd in the drive, in which you constantly choose your future, your partys outcome and wether you are falling from or maintaing the jedi order. Oh and do not worry about the D&D battle system, i haden played RPGs in a while, i was easily able to get in this game, and be fully in command of combat in probally less than 45 min (hence you do not have to read the manual or worry about 20 sided die unless you wanna : P)
This game, i can not express how wonderful i felt playing it. My only complaint is that its too short. Please check this game out, it will not let you down.
But alas, today i recieved my issue of EGM; with the cover story of KOTOR 2!!! Oh i think im gonna and finish the dark side of the story now (this review is after finishing the light side)...and wait for Feb '05 for Knights of the Old Rpublic: The Sith Lords!!

Best computer game I've played in years

For even casual Star Wars fans or even anyone with a love of good computer games with compelling stories, KotOR is, to use a rather cliche term, a "must-buy". Fans of LucasArts' older work (Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, et cetera), in which the purpose of the game wasn't flashy graphics or fast-paced action but was rather a well-developed story and impeccable character design, will love this game to bits. It should be pointed out, though, that this game does have rather flashy, impressive graphics, and some frickin' impressive action. The D&D-based task resolution system makes for a far more cinematic game than could be achieved otherwise, because motions far more elaborate than a player could dream up will be pre-animated and implemented by the game based on what you select for the characters to do.

The characters themselves are wonderful. It's possible to play this game through reasonably quickly, only paying attention to the overall plot and completely ignoring side quests and the characters that join your party, but only a fool would do so, as they would be missing the majority of the game. You wind up with a ship full of allies, each with fascinating back stories and side quests often resulting from those back stories, and the excellent writing and voice acting make spending hours conversing with them and other NPCs a blast.

Basically, everything that can be good about a game is good about KotOR. I haven't seen a game with a more fleshed out, rich, and convincing storyline in years, and the world is truly immersive (though the game is in the Star Wars universe, it is set thousands of years before The Phantom Menace, so while the character is pure Star Wars the world itself is actually very new and wonderful to explore) - an original, orchestral soundtrack gives each location a distinctive character and ensures that you never get bored, even on some of the longer, potentially tedious side quests.

Honestly, I haven't seen a better game released in a decade. If you really get frustrated with combat system and want more direct control over your badass Jedi, just save your game and get your lightsabre-slashing kicks in another wonderful LucasArts game, like Jedi Outcast.

A TerrificallySold Game

"Along time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." opens up KotOR and then comes the scroll of text, telling you what's going on in this galaxy, my enthusiam builds and I'm ready to kill some Sith...or become one. The graphics are stunning, it's definately a treat to stop and just look at the screen at this game. I liked the fact that you didn't have to know anything about D&D rules for this game and with you not having to worry about some obscure number game happening in the background you get to immerse yourself in the Jedi lifestyle. You definately have to play this game at least twice to get the most enjoyment out of the plot, due to the fact that you can be good or evil. The soundtrack is lovely and really gives you the feel like you're in a Star War's movie.I love the fact that it feels that way, because instead of being a firefighter when I grew up I wanted to be a Jedi. This game makes me feel like I have acclompished what I wanted to do growing up.

Overall I would have to say that there really is no major pitfall in this game, save for a couple of bugs, which really doesn't stop your immersion, experience, and overall fun in this game, which is what a game's supposed to be, fun. This will be one of those games that I come back to and play for a years to come. And now it only costs $20,positively a must have game.

CAN'T Stop playing it!

I enjoy playing RPG's, but this is insane! I LOVE IT! I have played plenty of D&D using the D20 system, so I walked right into this game with an understanding of the rules. Take that, and add a great story, the Star Wars universe, and BAM! You have one fine game that you can't seem to put down.
