I've followed development of this product since the day the SWG website opened. Watched the developer boards blossom into a place where you actually feel like you are part of the game development. If this game is any representation of the wonderful people that are making this game, it can't be anything but groundbreaking. They've got my preorder...

This game will...kick ass!!

Beta Opinions

I've been beta testing the game for a couple months, and they finally lifted the NDA today, so here's my two cents.

First off, do not expect a bug-free game. This game still has a lot of bugs, and I cannot imagine that they will remove all of them and not introduce new ones within the next week. As a weaponsmith last night, here's some of the bugs I ran into: many objects I crafted were deleted as I moved around the planet (actually moving from server to server), many high-end weapons were not balanced reasonably (the low-end weapons are currently better), a few weapons components were impossible to build due to typos in the schematics, my shop couldn't hold an item for sale for more than 4 1/2 hours, experimentation (which is supposed to improve items as you craft them) was not working as intended (it's hard to describe--it sort of works), the program crashed to desktop twice, and the shift key kept getting stuck down.

By launch, some of these bugs will fixed, some of them will still be around, and some new ones will show up.

That said, I think this game is worth buying. Bugs are part of the price of having a huge game, with new content being added all the time. Furthermore, I owned Anarchy Online during the first week, and SWG is far better than that (SWGs servers can get laggy, but they generally stay up).

And, besides, the game is fun. I like the combat system, because it is not twitchy, but it does require some thought (when to kneel, when to go prone, which special moves to use in which order, etc). I like the crafting system because the economy is player-driven and you can easily become a well-known crafter by selling high-quality products (so many people know my name at this point that I get constant messages asking for items).

And, if you've got the machine to handle them, the graphics are awsome. It's not so much that one scene or another is beautiful--it's the diversity of scenery. Between 10 worlds, and many distinct environments on each world, there's an enormous number of breath-taking scenes. Even after playing for two months, I often stumble on new cool-looking stuff.

In summary, this game will not be all things to all people. If you want a deep linear story, you should stick to single player games. If you want a huge amount of diverse quests, you should probably play everquest (or wait a year before getting this game). If you can't tolerate lots of bugs, avoid all MMORPGs at release. However, if you like wandering through huge RPGs, interacting with large numbers of people, and seeing lots of cool terrain then this is the game for you.

Simply can't wait!!

This will be the best game of its time. I've been following the forums, posting frequently, applying for beta (though not yet accepted), and SWG will be on the top of the sales list. Now, if they'll just release it, we'll all have a jolly time immersing ourselves in the greatest MMORPG ever!

Be waiting for two years for this game

This game offers alot of options as far as entertainment and character development. Also up and coming patches are gonna offer some type of vehicles which is greatly needed but still livable without. The flora and funa come alive in this incredible game, take it from beta tester who knows.

Ok I have been playing the beta test and must say even if it was $30 a month to play this game I would do it, getting together with 40 or more ppl taking down a tusken fort was the greatest, haning out in cantinas, and going places with my R5 was cool also. If you have ever wanted to be a part of star wars this is your chance ppl can talk to me while I play this game and its like there not even there i'm so caught up in the action. Even if you not big into games get this one, as to the fact I havent played games for at least two years cause they bore me. well thats all changed. SWG is the best

Fun when it works

I was a little worried about being overwhelmed going into the beta test for Star Wars Galaxies as I had never played an MMORPG before. Much to my surprise, the system was easy to learn and the interactions with other players were relatively enjoyable.

-Skills & Advancement-
Pro: The open-ended skill system allowed me to pick-and-choose the skills best suited to my playing style, while allowing me to bypass areas which didn't interest me. Another plus was the ability to shift my character's stats to better reflect the direction I wanted my character to go. In essence, a player can start the game as one type of character, and totally change to a different type whenever they want to try something new.
Con: Advancement was a little too fast-paced and left me wondering how much long-term playability there really was for the game.

-Combat-
Pro: The fighting system is easy to learn and (in theory) allows players and/or groups to devise tactics targeted for any situation through the use of skill-earned techniques.
Con: Combat is far from realistic. The terrain has little-to-no effect -- you can shoot through the ground allowing you to hit enemies on the other side of hills. Melee vs ranged attacks are just as contrived. Unarmed brawlers can hit gunmen from enormous distances. This was done in attempts to balance the two types of fighters, but in a galaxy with blasters, I debate whether they *should* be balanced.

-Crafting-
Pro: Just about everything in the game can be crafted by players and can be tweaked in a number of ways by experienced crafters.
Con: Starting is very slow and it can be almost impossible to actually make a profit from anything before you have mastered the skill (with clothes being the possible exception).

-Stability & Performance-
This is where the game fails a little. It seems to have a tough time handling instances where large numbers of characters gather in one place. On some occassions, the FPS dropped to the low single digits making anything short of walking difficult. The system for buying and selling items only seems to work right about half of the time, and catching a shuttle to another city can be a lot harder than it sounds. I trust the developers will have most of this ironed-out soon, but at this time, it is obvious that Sony rushed the game out rather than delay the release further.

I liked the game a lot, but there is much room for improvement.

With the release of this game, I am now free to discuss the beta test. This game is fun! I've enjoyed exploring the planets, cities and buildings from the Star Wars movies. The worlds are large and full of things to see and do. Character develpment allows for variety to create custom characters. This game will only get better. Planned expansion packs include vehicles, ridable creatures and space ships plus more worlds to explore. Anyone tired of the same old hack and slash fantasy games should consider SWG.
