A Well Deserved 2D Sonic Comeback

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 46 / 53
Date: February 03, 2002
Author: Amazon User

How could this game get any better??? I mean, the original Sonic games were great, but this one tops them all.
What's neat is, you don't have to be sonic the whole game. Knuckles, Amy, and Tails are now playable. That's what got it one of the five stars.
Like Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, you can take care of Chao in Chao gardens. This gives you something to do if you are stuck in adventure mode. There's the second star.
All you need is a link cable and some friends with a GBA to play some multiplayer. You're friends don't have to have Sonic Advance to play with you. Yep, the third star.
Sonic Advance gets it's fourth star because it can hook up to the Nintendo Gamecube game Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and trade Chao data and Chao themselvs.
The last star is for all-out game play. It's another running, jumping, spining, dashing, rolling, gliding, flying, hitting, smashing Sonic Game. How could you not like it???

Sonic Advance Preview

Sonic Advance. It's not his first appearance on a handheld, but it's his first for Nintendo. This game will have many features and will be overall very fun. I will break down this preview into a couple of sections for an easier read.
I. Graphics
The graphics for this game are absolutely outstanding for a game on a handheld. They use sprites that have been updated from previous 2-D games. The characters look pretty good from what I've seen so far and the level graphics look really cool.
II. Controls
The controls I can't really tell you about, but I'll base it on what I know. The Game Boy Advance (GBA) controls will be similar to the one for the Sega Genesis. Their will be a spin dash, jump, run, grinding, and rumours say even a homing attack, but I haven't seen pictures of it yet.
III. Gameplay
From the pictures I've seen, this game will be amazing. You can even grind down pipes like in Sonic Adventure 2 (SA2) as well as do loops like in the first Sonic games. There will be multiplayer games that are similar to the SA2 2-player games such as Battle and Chaos Emerald Hunt. The game consists of four characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Enchida, and Amy Rose. They must thwart Dr. Robotnik's plan to save the world once again. Sonic must collect Chaos Emeralds. Rumour says, that Super Sonic will come to the GBA scene once he collects all the Chaos Emeralds and makes his way to the final battle with Dr. Robotnik. There will be many more features to this game.
IV. Lastability
Again, I can't determine how this will be, but I'll do my best. Sonic Advance will last quite a while from what I can tell. There are four characters, each with their own storyline, and many additional quests to accomplish once you finish the game. People will have a blast with their friends, when they hook-up their GBAs and play multiplayer.
V. Additional Information
The current release date for this game has been pushed back to January 18, 2002.
VI. Overall
This game will be a great addition to the GBA and will make a new turning point in gaming history as Sega's mascot goes to Nintendo for the first time ever. I give this game five stars. Hopefully, this game will be all that we know and more. Buy it when it comes out or pre-order it ahead of time. No matter what you do, you must get your hands on this game.

Fans of the Genesis Sonic titles are in for a real treat. Sonic is still as fast as he ever was on the Sega Genesis system, and the same goes for Tails and Knuckles, as they are just as fun to play as in the olden days. The best part of this game is that each character has his or her own way to play. Sonic has blistering speed and spin dashes, Tails can fly, Knuckles' ability to glide and climb walls, and Amy is slow but has her big mallet. In fact, Amy's levels aren't nearly as bad as I had expected. They're actually pretty fun. Then there's the awesome ability to trade Chao creatures between Sonic Advance and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the Nintendo Gamecube via the upcoming(it may already be out)Game Boy Advance/Gamecube link cable. If your a classic Sonic fan, or if you're looking for a great 2D platformer on the Game Boy Advance that is faster paced than a Mario title, Sonic Advance is a definate buy.

Sonic Has NEVER Been Better!

Sonic is now at a new level that has never been reached before! You can play 20 different levels with four different characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy all with their own different speical abilities. Your job with these characters is to defeat the evil Dr. Robotnik and to collect of the emeralds that he stole. Levels include a casino, a winter wonderland, and a huge warehouse. All these levels contain power-ups, loop-the-loops, and little enemies that try to stop youre hero along the way. As you collect rings through out the game you can raise your Baby Chao in the Tiny Chao Garden by giving it food, playing mini-games with it, or buying another egg that will hatch into a friend for your Chao to play with. Plus, if you have GameCube/Game Boy Advance Link Cable you can trade data back and forth from the two systems. If you are having trouble with a level or just want to find an easy way to get coins, there is the Time-Trial mode. In this mode you play any level of your choice in no particular order to make a record-setting time. *NOTE* You keep all the coins you collect in Time-Trial mode for your Chao Garden. If you didn't think all of this was enough, you can hook up and play Versus mode with up to 4 players with only 1 game pak. In Versus mode, you try to have a combination of both the highest time and the most coins. The more coins you get and the faster the time is, the more points you will get and the player with the most points is the winner.

This game never gets boring. I have owned it for almost two months now and I'm playing it every day. There is always a secret pathway I can find in Adventure mode or a new way to make my Chao babbies grow in Tiny Chao Garden. This game not only has the greatest replay value of any game on the Game Boy Advance but it has the greatest graphics and incredibly smooth play control that I have ever seen on a handheld game system. My advice is to buy this game, it's great for all kinds of gaming fans and it's fun and appropriate for people of all ages.

Seems like all Sonic games

Once again: Sonic the Hedgehog is coming out with another game, and this one for game boy advance. Along with Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, Sonic must stop the evil Dr. robotnik once again. He collects chaos emeralds, which he eventually uses in his last battle with Dr. Robotnik.

Another feature of this game is the multiplayer mode. There are several games that you can play, including the chaos emerald hunt and the battle mode. When this comes to be available in November, it will surely be a hit.

Sonic 2D returns with 6 zones, 4 characters and same speed

For those of you who have never played a Sonic the Hedgehog game, it is a game where you play a Sonic, the super speeding hedgehog out to save his animal friends from Dr. Robotnic. The thing that makes Sonic so special is the landscapes, which are full of loops, hills, ramps and so on. You must collect golden rings for energy, and when you get hit, the rings shower out from Sonic, forcing him to collect more. For those of you who know about the Sonic games, this game goes back to the old Sega Genesis side scrolling adventure types, only with the Gameboy Advance this makes for better, more detailed graphics, more incredible landscapes for Sonic to zip around and four playable characters (Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and Amy). There are six "zones," with two "acts" and at the end of each zone is Dr. Robotnic in a different killing machine each time, such as a giant swinging hammer, a giant pogo, a floating machine that makes spikes fall from the ceiling and so on. The graphics in this game are great, and there are simple controls, A to jump, B to roll, down + A to do a super sonic speed-ball. The unfortunate part of the game is if you have played the Sonic games on Sega Genesis, you can beat this game in a day. There is even a neat mini game you can play, which is like a pocket pet, where you feed it and raise it all in one screen, teach it to swim and fly and play games with it.

Sonic on Nintendo?!?! Who would've thought?

Well, it has finally happened. Somthing so groundbreaking that a few years ago seemed impossible. Yes, Sonic the Hedgehog has arrived on a Nintendo system. Some would think that this would destroy the image of Sega's mascot, but it actually worked out for the better.

In this game, Sonic finally gets back to his 2D, side-scrolling, roots. Just about everything that made the Genesis series great is in this version. You want rings? They're there. 360-degree loops? Mm-hmm, its got 'em. Chracters so quick that they actually run faster than the camera? Yes, you can still do it. If you could do it on the Genesis, you can do it here(and do more).

The graphics here aren't quite up to par with the originals, but hey, it's a handheld. If you want Genesis graphics, go play a Genesis. OK? Even though the characters really show the pixels, the animations more than make up for them. The character models have also received an update. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy look just like they do in the 'grown-up' Dreamcast versions. The only thing that makes the graphics suffer is the fact that the GBA isn't back-lit. If you don't have a seperate light, some levels are hard to see. But overall, the graphics are nice.

The music is also another high point. Even though the GBA 's speaker can't handle the volume and effects, it gets better with headphones, or better yet, an actual stereo. The music is well-composed and matches the levels beautifully. There's also music from the older games, too, but you'll have to find them(hint: they're in the sound test).

There's also a mini Chao Garden, for which you can connect to a Gamecube and transfer data and other things.

So why am I not giving this game a perfect score, you ask? I have two reasons. One is the Special Stages. In this game, you must find the 'warp springs' instead of collecting rings. They are also very difficult. They are sort of like the ones in Sonic 2, but instead of running, you are falling and must direct yourself in their path. My other gripe is that the game is way too short. 6 levels and 12 stages(well, actually 14, but you have to beat the game with everyone and collect all 7 emeralds to see the 14th) is all you'll find here.

But overall, this is a great game, and everyone who has a GBA should own it. trust me, you'll like it.

The blue blur blazes back with beautiful memories...

I tell you, with all the X-Box , Gamecube and PS2 hoopla, it's satisifying to see a genre of gaming that started the whole video game empire. Being 22, games today are a little TOO real...which may put other people like myself who grow up off of games like Mario and Sonic in total agreement. The infamous joy of 2-D. The awe of zooming around in a high-speed daze when playing Sonic on the Genesis days is comfortably put back in Sonic Advance. If any of you were lucky to play the Genesis and Game Gear versions, GameBoy Advances literally takes all of them and crams it into a complete history of Sonic's glory and fame with a couple of extra surprises.

The ability to play as 4 characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy) is a nice variety to show each character's strengths and weaknesses as you trek through 6 big zones of 2 acts each. Grab rings, destroy robots with captured animals, outsmart the devious Eggman(aka Robotnik), collect the emeralds and save the day. Each level even as a few reminiscent thoughts of the past Sonic days, especially Casino Paradise Zone. Those who played the Genesis game know what I'm talking about. And the graphics....WOW! Being an animator, few gamers really appreciate good animation in the littlest of areas (like when any character jumps on a spring board) or the way they complete a level after defeating Dr. Eggman. My only gripe is the number of levels, but being a Sonic fan it would seem easy. But it's still fun playing as Sonic and his friends through beautifully detailed levels trying to thwart the schemes of the evil scientist.

I'm glad to see good retro games take a leap into the future. Through all the commerialistic exploitation of new age 3-D games, we still can't forget the foundation of true 2-D platformers. Live long.

Back to the good ol' days of Sonic the Hedgehog fun

This is truly a great game. After a couple of 3D games, which don't get me wrong, are okay, but I have always been a sucker for classic games. I wish I had one of those old Nintendo's with mario brothers three or two. Which is why I am happy about this Gameboy Advanced, there making all the old games on there. Anyway, this new 2D sonic game is one for the ages, it is just as great as every other Sonic 2D game. It's like Sonic 3 in the sense that you can save how far you went, but in this game there are no files, you just choose a character, and then choose a level, and any level you've already gotten is open for use. It is easy to get to the end, however getting all of the Chaos Emeralds and then trying to beat Dr. Robotnic (or Dr. Eggman in this game) as Super Sonic is tough, and I still havn't beaten it. But the game play itself is fun. Oh, and as you may or may not know, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy are available in this game. Sonic Tails and Knuckles have the same normal attacks, plus an extra one, like Knuckles does two punches then an upper cut. Amy is a good addition to the game. She is different from the other characters because she does not roll up, or roll up while jumping. She uses the B button more dominantly than the other characters, using her hammer. Once you get use to it, you can do anything; I beat the game with her first. The Final thing that is great with this game is the music. Some really good, foot-tapping, music. Sometimes, I just go to the sound test room, and listen to the music. It really is great, great composing. Overall, this is one of the greatist Sonic games, and a good first game for Sonic on the Nintendo System. This will be sure to be a great combo, Sonic and Nintendo. Enjoy the game!

Not as good as the Sonics for Genesis, but still worth it

The first Video Game that I ever played was Sonic The Hedgehog 2. To this day, after Donkey Kong 64, it is my all time favorite video game. I also own The Original Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic 3D Blast, and have played, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Sonic Spinball, Sonic CD, Dr.Robotnics Mean Machine (I think thats what it's called), Sonic R, and Sonic Adventure, and have enjoyed all of them. So when Sonic Advance came out, it was a no brainer that I was going to get it. After abandoning the 2d format with Sonic 3D Blast, and The Sonic Adventure Series, Sonic Team (the games developers) have gone back to the original 2D side scrolling format which I think was last seen in Sonic and Knuckles. This decision made the game very similar to the original 3 Sonic Games, and some may even consider this, Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The levels are all new (but a bit similar to some of the old levels), and the format where you face Robotnick at the end has been kept, but unlike in the Sonic the Hehgehog series, where you and/or a friend control one or two people on the screen at once, the game has the Sonic and Knuckles formula where you chose your character before you start your game. The characters you can chose from are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, each has a special ability that will make them better for some stages than other characters. I would have liked to have each character have there on set of levels, because there are only 6 Zones (each but one with 2 acts), if Sonic Team had done that format, there would have been 24 levels, and 40 acts total. Also, the special stage is not up to par with the ones for genesis, instead of running into a check point with 50+ rings, you have to search the level to find the special stage, and the stage itself is not as fun as the old special stages. But this game has some other nice features to make up for the lack of levels, there are time trials, and a Virtual Pet game called Chaos Garden, the point of the game is to raise an animal named Chao by taking care of there basic needs. Most needs require you purchasing something which costs rings, but you can earn rings by playing in little mini games. Overall, this game is a little short, but if you own a Game Boy Advance and like Sonic, it is a must have.
