2D Sonic Lives On!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 6

This game is unbelievable. It takes the old classic 2D Sonic games and adds new features from Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. For Example, Sonic can grind, and Amy can swing her Piko Piko hammer. There are a total of 12 levels (6 zones with 2 acts each), and Bounus Stages. The Bounus stages are now more challenging, it's sorta like the Sonic 2 bounus stages. I'm sick of people saying, "This game is too short, it only has 12 levels". That may be so, but to completely beat the game you have to collect all the Chaos emeralds. To collect the emeralds you have to beat the bounus rounds. I highly reccomend this game to anyone. Even if you are a die-hard Mario fan, give this game a try. You are guarenteed to love it.

Good to see Sonic back in his 2D form

While I liked Sonic Adventure I was not very keen on it's sequel or Sonic Heroes. The blue hedgehog and his pals simply do not belong in a 3D world and I was more than eager to get this game as it is a return to good old days of Sonic's previous incarnations on the Genesis.

Everything you would have liked about the old Sonic is back. The level designs, the power-ups, the cool music and gameplay that next-gen consoles lacked.

However fun the game is to play, it doesn't have much replay value. There are secret entrances in every level to the special stage and I only found one of them. Sorry, but I'm not going to replay every level looking for the special stages. The special stages themselves are kinda hard and there's no way I'd be able to get through all of them. Although turning into Super Sonic, as a result of winning them, would have been cool.

Included on this cartridge is the Chao Garden. If you have a link cable to your Gamecube and you have Sonic Adventure 1 or 2, you can transport your Chao onto your Gameboy and keep it as a sort of Tamagochi. When transporting them a pipe will appear on both screens and suck them up and plop them down. It's really quite cool and one of the few reasons to keep going back to the game.

Still, I will without a doubt be getting Sonic Advance 2 and 3, regardless.

Sonic --- back to his roots

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 4

SONIC ADVANCE IS the next-gen game that goes back to the early nineties side-scrolling roots.

Graphics: OK. Sonic Advance takes the original graphics from Sth3, revamps them, and sticks them on the GBA. However, the enemy models still do nothing more than move across the screen. 7/10

Sound: The classic jumping, hitting and other goofy sounds from the original series make a return, and almost give you the feeliong that you're playing the Genises again...and yes, that's a complement. 8/10

playability: Thesame as from the classic series. Need I say more? 6/10

Replay value: Particularily dull. You can play the whole story as Sonic, then Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, but again, they all have the same story, and levels. The only difference in all of their storys is simply different paths through levels. 4/10

Extras: As quooted from Omochao: "Eveeryone loves Chao! Aren't they cute?" Chao are cuddly virtual critters you can take care of in the Tiny Chao Garden. The best thing about them, though, is that with the GBA/GCN Link Cable and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the Gamecube, you can transport your Chao to the Ninttendo Gamecube. Trust me, your Chao will look much cuter in its 3D form. 9/10

Overall: Sonic Advance gets a 3/5. Overall, a few people that are fans of the Action genre will fall in love the game, but most people that play this game will want something more.

Sonic is really on Nintendo, and it really works!

Who would have thought we'd ever be playing Sonic the Hedgehog on a NINTENDO console?

As far out as it seems, it's now a reality! The fact that the three rivaling mascots (Mario, Sonic and Crash) are all available for one system (The Game Boy Advance, of course) is as crazy as it is exciting.

As a long-time Sonic fan, I was thrilled to find out that Sonic would be coming over to Nintendo, after I got over the initial shock of it. (Sega and Nintendo are rivals no more! I still can't believe it!)

Anyway, to get to the point, this game is a lot of fun. It's ten times better than the Sonic games that were made for the Sega Game Gear back in the day. Not only that, but you can choose from four different characters to play with! Try beating the game with all four of them if you're up for a challenge. :) Each level with each different character will give you a different feel and experience. Depending on your character's abilities (like Tails' ability to fly and Knuckles' ability to scale walls) it'll be easier or more difficult to complete a level or find hidden secrets in the game.

For anyone who loved playing Sonic games on the Genesis, you're going to adore Sonic Advance. If not.. then.. well... I can't imagine any diehard Sonic fans from the 16 bit area not loving this game. It's definitely one of the most fun GBA titles yet.

Speedy Sonic Speeds through games

Sonic is back in an all new adventure (namely Sonic Advance). Speed through many levels and zones as you and your friends seek to find and defeat Dr. Robotnik who's plan is to use the chaos emeralds to turn innocent cute jungle animals into robots for his army. You can pick a multitude of characters that can do different techniques. Sonic for instance can double jump in mid-air for an extra boost. Tails can fly for a limited time, and knuckles can glide and climb walls. Amy can't do much, but her hammer makes up for that. What's also cool is the Tiny Chao Garden which allows you to raise and train a Chao Pet. (Don't worry, it's not too much like Pokemon) You can even trade with your friends. I really liked this game because of the smooth animation and easy control, not to mention the games not hard at all, even for begginning gamers.

great game, but WAYY to easy

This game is a great game, first off. The graphics are great, but dont show all of what the Game Boy Advance can do. Second, there arent that mant levels in the game, and the game is very easy. I love the sonic series, and i remember playing it on the genesis and dreamcast. Only on this one, I can get through the first 8 levels in about 30 minutes with no trouble, while on the Genesis versions i cant get past the fourth level. If you want a short game that you can beat in a really short amount of time, or giving this to a small child you should try this. But if you have to decide, Super Mario Advance 2 is a much better pick. It has 96 levels, and is one of the best games ever.

Sonic Advance will be great, with side scrolling action just like the classics on sega genisis. They all can do special things, like Sonic and Amy can grind on rails (kind of like skateboarding without a skateboard), Tails (Miles) can fly and swim underwater, and Knuckles can climb walls and can fly horizantally. This game defenitly deserves a 5 star rating.

Oh boy, I like the new Game Boy, I sure do! Yet, I have never been a Nintendo sort of person. I have ever chosen for Sega consoles because I thought Nintendo as too cute, too "kiddie". Nintendo's faithful icon had always been the cute `n cuddly Mario Brothers, who laughed and winked their way through colourful worlds with comical bad-guys. Sega's faithful icon was a blue "devil without a cause" hedgehog with a bad temper and a chronic frown that dashed and crashed through once colourful worlds now corrupted and robotised. Sure enough, the antagonist was a comical looking and rather socially estranged cyborg genius, but that did not hold back the twilight atmosphere of the game. Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles all have had great impacts on my young teenager life before I became too obsessed with ~other aspects~ of life.

I have a Game Gear, so I have some experience with hand-held Sonic-games. Being more adult now than I was back then, I got a rather unpleasant sensation while playing Sonic Advance: the notion that I had been here before. "Green Hill Zone"- a "Casino" level - an "Underwater" level - a "step-rocket level". Sonic might have three more pals on his quest these days, but he still dashes from left to right, spinning on animal-like robots and shield/ring-containing monitors. Robotnik/Eggman still awaits the heroes with some dastardly doomsday machine at the end of each level. He also still manages to steal the seven Emeralds. With every new game, the developers have tried to maintain interest by adding little extras to the familiar gameplay while clutching to the bigger picture. One Sonic Game Gear game had a little submarine and a small helicopter. Another featured robotic counterpart end-bosses of Sonic himself. And with each new game I wonder where those former additions have gone and why they have been replaced by something that is sometimes less interesting.

This Sonic has more "fun `n play" in the casino level, some new kinds of speedtubes, catapults and springs. There is even a Metalknuckles! Nevertheless, to me -someone who has seen Sonic from the very start - it all seems reiteration. It seems cheap. I demand larger levels with more play (and I don't mind seeing some old scrap again), a few ridiculously original level-concepts, and a more exciting background story. And while the game looks good in itself, I find it rather hard to believe this is the best GBA can do. Damn it, we are the ones paying big money for these cartridges, we would be nuts if we accepted quality so easily!

Do you know what would make the ultimate Sonic game? One that had almost every of the before-used extra vehicles and characters like Metalsonic and Fang with adapted (improved) gameplay. It has come to me that Sonic Advance 2 is in production. Now that Sega is concentrating on PC and Arcade-halls - and now that the ultimate Sega icon has entered the realm of Nintendo- now let us hope that the one irrevocably good thing about Mario Brothers - their superior gameplay - comes to the minds and fingertips of the Sonic Team.

If not, I surely will find another park to walk through. I have got a whole pile of Sonic games that are just as interesting.

This one gets two stars for the game and one for Sega's courage in respect to letting go of their idol. Three stars.

Hey Sonic fans! This was my first GBA game! And it rocks! I liked this game because not only can you play as Sonic, but Tails, Amy, and Knuckles! The levels are extreamly fun. I t takes a while to get used to it but in time you will! I highly recomend this game! You can also link this game with sonic Adventure Battle 2! You will be able to transfer Choas from GBA to Gamecube!

Sonic on a Nintendo system? Is the world ending?

At the dawn of the twenty-first century, Sega shocked their long time fans. The company aborted production of its (relatively-new) Dreamcast console, and decided to become a third party exclusively. This meant the unthinkable would be happening - Yes, the Sonic The Hedgehog series was going to be on Nintendo systems! And a traditional-style Sonic game got released on the Game Boy Advance not long after. Read on for my review of Sonic Advance.

PROS:
-THE GAME PLAYS EXACTLY LIKE ITS SEGA GENESIS COUNTERPARTS. If you played the old Sonic games on the Genesis, you're going to feel right at home with this game.
-IT'S A TOTALLY NEW GAME. This game isn't just a port of one of the old Genesis games, but rather a new game of the old stylings. This series was long overdue for a revival!
-YOU HAVE A CHOICE OF FOUR CHARACTERS. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy are all selectable. Having multiple characters gives the replay value a huge boost.
-EACH CHARACTER HAS HIS OR HER OWN STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES. Sonic has his classic dash move, Tails can perform a "helicopter" styled descent with his tails, Knuckles has his classic "glide and grab walls" move, and Amy can whack the bad guys with her mallet.

CONS:
-THE ONLY THING REALLY WRONG WITH THE GAME IS THAT IT DOESN'T REALLY BRING ANYTHING NEW TO THE SERIES. To put it simply, if you didn't like any of the older Sonic games, there's not going to be anything new here that will win you over.

OVERALL:

Old-school Sega Genesis gamers are going to feel right at home with this game, and should purchase it without hesitation. The Sonic series (the side-scrolling games in it, anyway) were long overdue for a revival - and here Nintendo gives them one.
