Sonic the Hedgehog brought to the GBA!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 5 / 8

Finally, Sega has done something that will please many Game Boy Advance owners. They have brought Sonic the Hedgehog, the "mascot" of Sega to Nintendo's GBA.

If you are familiar with the Sonic series on the Genesis, you know just what you're getting here. This game brings back the 2D Sonic from the good ole Genesis days. Looking for rings, multiple 360-degree loops in a row, and Dr. Robotnik? You got 'em. They're all here. If you could do it in the Genesis Sonic games you could do all that, plus a lot more in this game.

There are 6 levels and 14 stages (but to see get to the 14th stage you must beat the game as everyone and collect all 7 emeralds). The stages in each level are very fun to play. As you go on each level gets harder and harder. There are also 2 Special Stages which you get to by collecting warp springs instead of coins.

The graphics for this game aren't as good as the original games, but the characters are upgraded. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy look just like they do in the Dreamcast games. The thing that makes the graphics suffer some, is that the GBA isn't back-lit, some levels are very hard to see without good lighting. Overall the graphics are good, with amazing backgrounds and animations.

The sound effects for this game are amazing. They fit perfectly with each level and stage. The speakers of the GBA are not strong enough to play the music in very high quality, but with headphones the music is solid and smooth. You can even use music from older games as well, but you need to find them.

The two reasons why I didn't give this game a perfect score is because the game is way too short. All you'll find in this game is 6 levels and 14 stages. Also, it is very hard to get to the Special Stages and they are very difficult. They are pretty much like the Special Stages in Sonic 2.

Another addition to this game is a mini Chao Garden, for which you can connect your GBA to a GameCube and transfer data and do other things. This is a great feature in Sonic Advance.

Overall, this is a great game! This is the GBA game that everyone should own. If you are a Sonic fan like me, you should get this game. You'll really like it.s

Sonic is back!

I'm glad that this blue mascot is back, not on Sega system but who cares? I've always been a Sonic fan and I sure will be happy to see a new version. I didn't like the 3D Sonic seen on Dreamcast, cuz it's not the Sonic we all love. Plus, this is the only platform Sonic that features all heroes and all are playable. I'm looking forward for the Sonic's release and hope it's going to be as fun as the ole Sega Genesis one. Very recommended!

What More Could You Want?

Sonic Advance is a very nice game. It is challenging and fun. You can play as either Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy.Each have their own special features that come in mighty handy. Sonic can grind rails, Tails can fly, Amy can jump really high, and Knuckles can glide, swim and climb walls. The game is relatively simple to learn, but hard to beat. There will be some times when you want to fling your GameBoy Advance against a wall and scream in frustration, but it all adds to the fun when you finally beat that pesky robot. There are six zones, the first six having two acts each, the boss of each zone being in the second act. There are 'Chao Emeralds'you need to find, by finding the special spring and clearing the special stage.
The seventh act is the final zone, which I haven't reached yet, but I think you get to fight Dr. Robotnik/Eggman.
To see the final ending, you have to beat the game with all four charcaters.
The game is fast-paced and lots of fun. I suggest you buy it!

I am very sad!

I was so very excited when I finally got this game! I tore the package open, shoved it into my GBA, and flipped the switch. Soon after, I flipped the switch. This game is not very fast paced. Even though the old games were slower than the new ones, this game was very slow. It was also boring. All of the levels were the same exept different backgrounds! So I tried the other characters! All of the levels are the same for different characters, unlike SA1. Just different attacks! Trust me! I LOVE sonic. It is really fun! Especially Knuckles' Chaotix (Get It) But this is a major disappointment. Even the mini choa garden is all messed up! I am very very sad! Why don't the companies develop the games for handhelds themselves instead of turning it over to any old company (in this case THQ and Crash for GBA, it was given to Vicarious Visions) who can mess up the game. The only reason why crash the huge adventure isn't terrible is because VVisions Base the game off of Crash 2 and 3! Hey! Sega! Develop your own handheld games like you used to! And whoever the heck is developing crash! Traveler's Tales (Yeah! I was surprised too!) or Konami or Whatever! Make your own handheld crash! Sorry sonic! This is the one game of yours that I hate! (Although I haven't tried the handheld for NGPC) By the way, if you like Sonic Team, try the game they tell you about all over SA2! (You'll see!)

Does any one play the games before reviewing???

This game is too short, only 6 zones. There are 4 characters but the zones are exactly the same whatever the character. It took me one hour to beat with Sonic, and after 4 hours I had done it all.
Worse, the bonus stages are hidden in silly places (on Genesis you just had to find 50 rings and hit a respawn pole) and the bonus stages are extremely tedious. They look like sonic2 bonus stages, but you can only go straight.
Finally, the game play is like on Genesis except for the map design and the useless grind move (unfortunately, you can use it only 5 times in the whole game!!!). Oh, and the fire and water shields are missing. Most important, Sonic2 and 3 were much better because when knowing the zone you could run non-stop. In Sonic Advance there is always an ill-placed monster or spikes. And sometimes you're stopped by a wall just after speeding a loop (zone1).
The music is horrible.
Overall it's a 2D Sonic Game, so it's still good. But why could not they match the 10 year old Genesis games? Maybe they don't care, you'll buy it anyway.

3 reasons why I got this game. 1. It is sonic the hedgehog and if its better than the genisis version, id get it on any game system anytime. 2. You have different charachters to pick so you not stuck with just sonic (i love tails) there are others too.. 3. Sega is not making anymore sytems... boo hoo hoo im gonna miss those guys! ;( dont miss out get them before they are all gone..

Whoa...what happened?

When I first saw this game, I was really looking forward to playing it, me being the old-school Sonic fan that I am. Anyway, I picked it up after reading several things on it. And I must say, I was really disappointed in what the game had. In my opinion, it shouldn't qualify as a Sonic game. The two player mode is really lacking something. The music doesn't even compare to the awesome compositions in Sonic 1 and 2. Yes, I know they included a few songs and stuff from the first game, but that's about it.

The first thing I noticed was the character choices. If you play Sonic 2 or 3, you have a choice of playing as Sonic, Tails, or both. This game didn't have that, and that was a sorry thing to see. Amy Rose is one of my favorite characters, but I really think that the game wouldn't lack anything if she wasn't a character in the game. The levels and their titles weren't all that spectacular. Sure, they had a lot more boxes than the first games, and what really made me mad was the invincibility. I know they kept the same music, but the invincibility that's a Sonic trademark is the sparkles that surround the character. This game takes it from Sonic Adventure 2, and that made me upset, because it's just not...Sonic. The moves were hard to get used to, and (I'm sorry that I'm going too in-depth with this stuff, but....) all of the characters shouldn't have attacks, like in Sonic Adventure. Another thing that really disappointed me was that the levels were just too easy. There didn't seem to be enough badniks and there weren't enough turns and cool stuff like that.

I think that people who aren't die-hard Sonic fans would like this game, and it's pretty simple. But I warn those who love Sonic like I do-this game is not like traditional Sonic.

My reccomendation? Avoid this game, especially if you are a big Sonic fan.

~Amy Rose~

It's like playing my gamegear again!

This game turned out to be pretty good. It's basiclly the good classic sonic game with a few improvments(and disappointments). It has the classic side-scrolling action and a nice varity of characters. It also has the nice robonik battles and mutiple routes through the levels. The tiny chao gardens ability to link with gamecube is a definent plus. Now for the downside. The game is to short and on the easy side. The tiny chao garden was a disappointment since all it is, is a small box with a 2-D chao and a few, low payout minigames. Overall I think this is a pretty fun game, but I probobly would of givin it a 3-star rating if I didn't have SAB2.

A New Sonic Game

I'm a hardcore "Sonic Freak" and to be honest, I thought this game would be better. Unlike the other Sonic games, it does not have the same lasting appeal. I was kind of bummed when I realized it, but the graphics are much improved and the Chao garden adds some fun.

Old school fun on Game Boy Advance

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of my all time favorite video game characters, and these 2D side scrolling games bring out the best in him. Ball mode, Loops and a whole lot of speed.

The way to get chaos emeralds is kinda stupid in this game(falling down a pipe collecting rings on on a snow board is not my idea of fun) but the extra stage you see after getting them is lots of fun. Oh, and chaos emeralds are culmulative, so if you collect them with Tails, you have them with Sonic.

A good game, and portable as well.
