Entertaining Shooter

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

This is a very good shooter. The graphics are excellent and the game play is fun once you get the hang of playing a FPS like this. But be warned -- it is a real struggle to play if you don't have the horses: ram, video card, etc. I barely had what it took to play it.

I have seen quite a few complaints about it being glitchy. I rarely had a problem -- it probably crashed two or three times the entire game, but again -- it is a real hog for memory. Make sure you update before you start playing -- I believe this resolves most issues.

Its quite fun once you get the hang of it, but there are some hassles. I was constantly wrestling with the weight limitations and make sure you use the correct combination of artifacts and health kits.

The AI is fantastic -- probably the best ever (better than Far Cry). It would have been nice to drive or fly something, but that is a tiny complaint.

I was never able to get the multi-player to work, but this might have been due to my system.

I highly recommend this game. Its fun and challenging

It's a pretty good game - good sound, graphics, effects, music - you name it. It's not the easiest game to play - I am somewhere in the middle of game and getting kind of tired (or bored). But it is still very serious title that really deserves gamers' attention.

Stalking the great shooter

This game is different enough from common shooter like 'Timeshift' to make it enjoyable even for old players like me who wet their teeth on 'Blood and Duke Nukem". The visuals are very good and definately lend to the atmosphere of the game. The story is intersting and plays a little like an RPG but your character never levels. Gameplay is difficult so save often. It all takes place in a depressing environment but that just makes it more realistic. There are few minor glitches but overall the game is well worth the time and money.

Realism in both game play and environment

This is one of my all time favorite FPS. The reason is the tremendous realism that is present in both the game play and the environments. You see, I bought this game for two reasons. The first is I really enjoy FPS style games. The second is that Chernobyl and The Area of Alienation are fascinating to me. You see, the entire playable map in the game, with only a few exceptions, exists in reality. The Garbage, the Junk Yard, the Red Forest, Pripyat, are all real locations, and they are modeled in this game with extreme accuracy. If you doubt this, do a Google search for photos of Pripyat and The Area of Alienation or read Zones of Exclusion: Pripyat and Chernobyl. It's truly impressive that as you play this game you are exploring the real and strange world of the worst nuclear accident in the history of the world.

The realism extends to game play. The weapons in the game are varied and use different ammunition types. They jam, need repaired, and are upgradable with both NATO and other attachments. You can attach grenade launchers, several varieties of scopes, etc...

The AI is better than average. Human opponents will frequently flank, hide, and even charge if they think they have the advantage. There are times when they get confused, and begin to run around aimlessly, but those occurrences are rare.

A few frustrations include some poorly translated dialogue that is at times unintentionally funny. Things as odd as a shotgun being described as a riffle, or a man in The Bar constantly asking "Do you respect me?" I wish that I could have told him no, and then killed him in a dual, just to make him shut his face. Equally annoying are some of the cued dialogue that also repeats endlessly. If you've played the game, "I said come in, don't stand there!" has been ingrained in your mind forever.

There are no some really excellent mods available for the game, which do among other things, improve the graphics, adds back vehicles (why were they ever left out in the first place?) improves the armor decay algoritham, increase what stores sell, and makes weapons that were left out (again, why?) of the final product. I highly recommend you research and add some of these mods if you're going to play the game.

As an aside, there are more than 3 endings. There are 7-8 at least, but only 2 'real' endings.

Fantastic setting which can really get you into the game

The environment in this game is awesome, everything seems to fit so well you don't even think twice about why there is this or that. Along with a great sound track, it really sets the mood as you travel through the Zone.

I would highly recommend downloading the new patch `FIRST'. There are a few glitches here and there but I never ran into anything I had to reload/restart over. Also, the new patch will not be able to play any of your pre-patch saved games. I learned this the hard way.

STALKER is somewhat of a mix between an RPG and a FPS Horror. There is no XP or leveling to worrie about, but you loot your fallen opponents for ammo, weapons, medkits and only have so much you can carry at one time. So no loading up on 3 or 4 guns and all their ammo to satisfy your hunger for destruction, this only adds to the feel to the game tho. The game is quite large, with a ton of free open space. Leaving lots of areas to explore in search of Artifacts or stashes... and with how good the game looks; sight see.

The game is different enough from other FPS that is does take awhile to get used to, I played on STALKER difficulty(one up from easy) and was owned in two languages(I'm no noob to FPSs either.. I had to turn it down to easy to get used to the game, so don't be fooled if your doing bad!). The reason it's hard to get used to is guns are highly inaccurate, and it takes more then a few shots to the chest to take out an opponent. Aiming also has a much different feel then normal making it a little harder. However don't think this is something to bring the game down, once your used to these facts the game only becomes more fun in it's realism, and feels more rewarding when you take out a group of bandits.

Over all the game has a good storyline, and I would recommend this to anyone who likes the genre. Or looking to try something new. Besides, it's cheap enough now that your not losing a lot if you end up not liking the game, right?

Interesting first person shooter game.

6 years was not enough. I can't play this for more that 10 minutes because it likes to crash for no reason. For the amount of time this was in develpment, that kind of thing is unforgivable. The graphics and the environment are nice, but it's hard to enjoy them when the game can't be played. Plus the AI is dirt stupid. I put three bullets in a guy before he finally decided to turn and shoot at me. Shame on you THQ Shame on you. Next time, release a game when it's ready.

Meh its an ok game

Deployed to Iraq, and i borrowed a international version of the game. i liked the game play and figured i'd go ahead and buy my own copy of the US version. Removed the old game completely and installed this version, plus all the patches. Game is now laggy and unstable, it will crash to desktop. No amount of tweaking will fix this issue. I'm running it on a tricked out Alienware M9700 with XP operating system so its not my computer its the game. Personaly i don't think it likes my SLI graphics. Oh well the box is good for covering my noodles in a cup till they are ready, and the disk makes a stylish coster for my beverage while i play Oblivion at max rez.

Excellent in many ways

I'm not going to go overboard with this review since there are plenties here that are very helpful already. The game is really good, excellent graphics and it even runs on computers without the latests techs on them as I got to test myself before upgrading my video card. The IA is top of its class and don't expect it to stand up in the same spot waiting for you to shoot them down, that means you shouldn't do the same either and have to play very actively. In fact, the IA is what I like the most about this game, it's superb.

But even though this game seems so cool there are a few things that didn't convince me completely. The back story and setting are excellent, if people have compared the setting to FallOut they are damn right, but the game play story misses lots of things and since it's so open ended you may end up finding out a few things before you were supposed to, in overall the story is confusing and somewhat cliche (not the backstory, no). Also, even though it has some RPG elements, like stats, upgrades, interaction with NPCs, Inventory management, there are a few things that doesn't fit too well. The interactions with other NPCs are very poor, you are either friend (or neutral which would pretty much be the same) or enemy which sums to a shoot you or not shoot you situation. The dialogs are very poor even though the NPCs are so unique in their behavior, but their limited speech (which ends up being almost the same for each one of them)doesn't let you differentiate them much from each other. The inventory limitation and organization is there, but it's not, it's not like the one from Diablo for example where you are limited by both size and weight. here you seem to be only limited by weight which makes me wonder, why organize your inventory anyway if everything is going to fit at the end? The trading is very dull as well, no matter how much money you have you can't do much with it, you can either sell the guns of the guys you hunt down to other people it seems since they are not very interested. On another note, the game box was HUGE, it seems it was meant for 2 disk and a huge manual, but the manual is very short and pretty much useless, there's only one disk and it was literally dancing inside all of the space for the unnecessary space.

Despite the bad score the game is really good but I'd recommend you waiting for the next title which will be a prequel for this one and hopefully all the glitches will be solved. Bear in mind that this game had a totally different concept when it began as the one it had as of release and it was even considered a vaporware until it reedemed itself hence the glitches.

This would be a 5 STAR game if the screen would quit freezing up for 1 to 10 seconds after about 10 to 20 minutes df play
