The free-flowing, non-linear gameplay is hamstrung by the fact the game forces you through timed, linear missions, where you will save, restore, restore, restore, restore, kill another mob, repeat the save/restore process, over and over.
I have been playing FPS titles since Wolfenstein, and was one of the first people to play Doom while it was still sharewear, and this one is perhaps the most frustrating one I have found--even on novice it is too hard. Part of this is because the maps have bottlenecks where, sadly, you are the one entering into a tight killzone where 5-7 mobs are well hidden and shooting at you. Part of this is becase the mobs are too hard to kill.
Maybe the programmers think it is cool to make human opponents that can be shot point-blank in the face with a shotgun--twice--and recover before you can reload your shotgun (which hold two rounds) and shoot you dead. Personally, I don't enjoy fighting AI controlled opponents with infinite ammo and superhuman resilience.
Oh, and just to make things even more fun, the mobs you are assisting on the missions tend to all die within the first 3 seconds of battle.
Also, I have seen people talk about the RPG-aspects of this game. There are none. If you play all the way through to the end, your character will have the same skills as when you started. And, he will still only be able to carry 50 pounds. While 50 pounds may not sound too bad, remember, you carry loot back to your home base and sell it to make money. Well, since you have to carry around first aid kits, and ammo, and food, and bandages, and 3-4 weps, what that means is if you carry around enough of those items to use on a mission, you are coming back with no loot.
Do yourself a favor, borrow a copy from a friend before you buy it. If you like it after trying it, buy a copy. Otherwise, save your money.
No...just....No

6 years was not enough. I can't play this for more that 10 minutes because it likes to crash for no reason. For the amount of time this was in develpment, that kind of thing is unforgivable. The graphics and the environment are nice, but it's hard to enjoy them when the game can't be played. Plus the AI is dirt stupid. I put three bullets in a guy before he finally decided to turn and shoot at me. Shame on you THQ Shame on you. Next time, release a game when it's ready.
Too many bugs!!

If you buy this game, you're gonna need a can of Raid to get rid of all the Bugs! . Wait another 6 months to a year from now when THQ finally gets around to developing a decent patch for this game. Save your money for now. Buy this game at your own risk!
Six years apparently wasn't enough.

There's really no excuse for releasing a game with this many bugs. My computer by far meets the system requirements, yet when I save or quicksave, the game crashes to the desktop. Also, the keymapping does not save when I exit the game and I have to reassign all my keys every time I try to play.
I mean, the first patch, released mere hours after the retail release contained 64 bug-fixes. Among these fixes is the wondrful fact that when I try to save my game, the game now takes about twice as long to finish crashing. Don't misunderstand me. The game still begins crashing as soon as I hit save, it just takes twice as long for the program to finally die and for my computer to return to a working state.
I'll leave the part ebout how my bullets don't seem to hurt my enemies to someone whose computer doesn't spaz over something as simple as saving their game.
Not even worth 5$ *CONTAINS SPOILERS*

So I bought this on the day it was released, and was handed a copy of a buggy piece of s*it, that like many game companies, forced ME to beta-test it for them so they could patch it. It was nearly unplayable, some artifacts did the OPPOSITE of their stated bonus (woe to me when equipped the 'stops bleeding' artifact only to die 5 seconds after I jumped off a ledge and skinned my knee)
Okay - so I figured that I've spent 55$ on this piece of trash, I'll wait 3 or 4 months and then play it again when it's finally patched. So I waited and re-installed it last week.
If anyone is still considering this - it's not even worth 5$ wholesale, they did two patches and stopped, it's still broken and chances are will NEVER be fixed. And I should mention, the patches are not compatible with any saved games - forcing you to replay the entire game from the beginning!
How ANYONE can rate this 5 stars is WAY beyond me, THQ must hire people to make accounts here and vote on its products. I'm sorry - but "great graphics!" does not make an excellent game. If I wanted to look at pretty pictures I'd go to a museum thank you very much! I still can't believe I trusted the reviews here and spent full price on this.
The P.D.A. STILL drives you to the wrong places for quests, mobs can walk against a wall on the ground floor and 'appear' on the 4th floor of a building as they advance forward, horribly punishing at the beginning until you 'skill up' enough not to not miss 29 out of 30 shots in a clip, and by the time you get an assault rifle you are so accurate you don't even have to aim; you just headshot people from the hip, if you shoot someone they stop being a targetable object while the 'pain animation' happens - you can only wound someone while they are 'standing' and they are completely invulnerable during the 'oh no - I've been shot!' animation. You can not 'circle strafe' and if you try to dodge left or right as you run, you stop and begin to walk. Tripping over the smallest ledge also turns off the auto-run, I guess there's allot of debris to trip over or something. My worst gripe is that an opponent with a pistol will headshot you from 300 yards, in the dark, during a thunderstorm!
Supposedly there are "eight different endings" but if you play this game as anyone would, i.e drag everything back to the vendor to make cash to get better equipment or at LEAST a decent gun, the game PENALIZES you for having "too much money" - and in the end the wish you ask the wish-stone for is "I want to be rich!" and you die horribly...

So, I bought this awesome-sounding game back in March or so (pre-order?). With my recent move and everything else, I FINALLY got to sit down today (9/8) and do nothing. I told my wife I am just gonna sit here and play games all day. Well, I'm (censored)ed.
I played it for about eight hours today. It seemed pretty good. Finally started to get a feel for the game and the engine. Took a break for dinner. Came back, and the save game wouldn't load. Just hangs the machine. So I reboot, try again. Same thing. Reboot, start the game, and tell it to check for updates. It says there are none. So I load a previous save game instead of the latest. That loads fine. So I load my newest from there as a launching point. Machine hangs. So I go on Google to look around.
Even tho the game says no updates, I see there have been THREE patches since it was released. So I get the newest one and install it.
Now, the internals of the savegames have changed so it refuses to load the old file!!! How (censored) useless is that - to have a patch to a game render all previous saves totally useless. Not upgrade and never go back to the older versions (understandable), but no, you're just outta luck - start from the beginning all over again!
I don't have time for this. Vendors need to stop shipping beta software. I'm putting it up for sale Monday at work.
Way way way way too difficult.

Like most games the difficulty level is absolutely ridiculous. Need a game that non experts can beat.

This game takes place in Russia and was written by Russians that have no idea how to write a game. Actually, this is just a sorry excuse for a game. The game is fundamentally flawed-EVEN after it gets patched. And the patches will keep coming. Don't waste your money. I would have rated this a negative 4 stars, if I could have.

What makes me so upset is that this game had the potential to be one of the best games ever designed. It is almost like the designers studied every one of the game's finest features and decided to deliberately and utterly make them frustrating and stupid.
The biggest game killer for me about this is that the single player game is treated like you are hosting your game as a server, as you often see the "disconnecting" and "synchronizing client".
Save that garbage for Multiplayer.
The problem with this is that all the stuff you kill in the game respawns the very next morning, every day, totally destroying and ruining what could have been a satisfying experience with working your way through the game. The same bandits you kill, over and over keep ressurrecting and attacking you as you pass, even while the corpses of their previous bodies are still laying at their feet. And of course the unique NPC's if they are killed (And they seem to be pathetic weaklings compared to the respawning bandits and their godlike killing abilities where they can headshot you at 300 meters with a pistol) do not come back, so if they were a quest turn-in, too bad, the designers thought that god like, near unkillable respawning bandits was more fun for your immersion.
Totally destroyed. Do not buy this wreck.
