Read some of the other bad reviews on the web and here. I WISH I HAD!!!!!
I played this game all the way through on XP and VISTA. For now, if you are running VISTA, without a patch specifically to fix the VISTA issues, you had best skip this game. Even on XP, it is a rough ride. At times, it did good and other times it drives you nuts!
It is buggy as hell. I tried running this on 3 different gaming computers that I have. All are top of the line, screaming machines. One runs twin 7950's in SLI mode. Another has just a simple 7600 GT. It runs ok if you turn the settings way down. YUCK!!! The graphics are not that good turned all the way up! lol
The latest patch has made a huge difference. Before that, this game ran like garbage. It crashed for no reason, saves got corrupted. Those problems still happen, not as much though.
The game play? Well, you only have one way to play the game....up close and personal until you get half of the way through. Then you get some decent weapons. If you don't shoot the head and if you don't do it close your enemy most likely will not die!!! Very ANNOYING after the first 10 times you do that!
The graphics are completely outdated. You can tell they have been working on this game for 5 years.
If anyone thinks this game is better than HL2, FEAR or Far Cry...you have got to stop doing drugs!!!!
Now, I will say that the concept is great and some of the ideas and obstacles in this game are great. STALKER will be seen as what could have been but didn't quite get there. Hopefully, this group will get to make a sequel and get it right.
Look out behind you!

Wow, this is one of the most extreme games I have ever played. Exelent graphics help set the stage in a future post Chernobyl landscape where few rules exist and danger is everywhere around you. The game has a creepy feel that will make you look behind yourself as you sit at the computer. The strange ambiant sounds and growling creatures created by the radiation will keep you on your toes, not to mention the ruthless enemy. This game is a combination of many other types of games. It has enough gunplay to satisfy any first person shooter fan, and an open ended style that can change every time you play the game. I have played this game over and over and it never seems to go the same way twice. This game is truely groundbreaking, and the most fun game I have played in years. It will take some time to get used to, but be patient, you WILL be rewarded with a excelent plot and plenty of exciting gameplay with endless ammounts of weapons. Buy this game and enjoy, you wont regret it!
A few small problems keep this game from a perftect 10.

In MY book this is close to a perfect game. Fun marred by some minor annoyances. VERY immersive gameplay. If you liked Deus X, Half Life (1 and 2), Morrowind, Oblivion, Far Cry, you will love this game. Despite some reviews I have read, the game seems quite difficult. I am about six hours in to it and believe I am just getting started so I'm guessing gameplay will be 20+ hours. It took me several hours last night just to get used to the menus (read, in game PDA), and game opperation, but now I find myself strangely addicted. There is no Quicksave which I find annoying. It's about 50/50 shooter/rpg. I am constantly managing my inventory, which, personally, I think is really cool. This inventory management along with insanely smart AI, and realistic weapons physics will suck you right in. Graphically it is AWESOME, despite being last gen. and may be demanding for some machines. I have an AMD X2 4800, and Nvidia 7800GTX and I had to set the graphics back a smidg to get it to run smoothly on a 20" monitor. I had been waiting for this game for three years, aside from a few small problems I was not dissapointed. Besides, how else are you ever going to see Chernobyl?
Bugs galore

First of all, I must admit that the engine this game uses is REALLY old. Sadly simply because this was released in 2007 does not mean that this game must have an engine that is new, in fact if anything it would probably be best compared to the Unreal 2 engine in Unreal 2004 (an excellent game, but shoddy graphics compared to the Unreal 3 engine seen in games such as Gears of War). The atmosphere of this game is great, it is as though fallout were to be transformed into a fps. But, the number of bugs in this game are CRAZY! For example, without any patches, the game will slow down almost to about 20 fps when I am going up the stairway in the very beginning of the game. Not fighting, but simply walking up a STAIRWAY . Another bug (unsolved by the patch) is that sometimes the door to the main quest giver will MAGICALLY SHUT, and cannot be opened by any means. I would recommend this game if a. You like post apocalyptic games and b. you live in the future and can buy it fully patched. I am running this on XP not VISTA (I honestly cannot imagine the number of bugs it must have running on that OS).
WOW!!!

This has to be the best FPS game of the year. (Till halo 3) Not as bugy as lots of people say just get the first patch and you good to go. Overall a great buy. Get this game you will not be disappointed.
*note* There is a great mod that gives you 20 more FPS, get it and the game runs a lot beter.
One of the greatest games ever! Great atmosphere, gameplay & graphics!

I'm a big fan of first person shooters. I've played all of the half life games, Unreal, wolfenstein, etc. Stalker tops them all with great AI (everything has it's own priorities, even the animals), an unparalleled weather system and a super detailed graphics. Like one reviewer said, Stalker is not a game, it's an emotion. Good work, devs!!

In stalker you are thrown into one of the most beautiful environments ever created in game history. This is no ordinary FPS, and counterstrike tactics will be your demise. Build your reputation and experience, fight in the Arena, unlock multiple endings to find out the true answer to the (at first) seemingly void plot. This game is an incredible experience. The online multiplayer is a bit shot though, but once the patch comes out to fix the netcode issues, it will be one of the most innovative multiplayers ever.
A Great Fun Game

i have no pity for the whiners who have to start out with a pistol. most games you start out at the bottom and work up as you go along. also when you play against the computer it usually has an advantage. in this game the bad guys or good guys never run out of bullets just you. they don't use med kits. they don't use hand grinades. they don't heal their injured buddies. i have almost 200,000 rubles and there is very little in the game to buy. trading is another thing that is almost a waste of time. you just search all the dead and you get every thing you need. there are no females in the game so far. i think i'm only about half way thru the game. there are alot of things you can pick apart in the game.
but the game is great fun. the bad guys are pretty smart for the most part and most are perfect shooters when you are not. so carry with you med kits and bandages at all times to even the playing field of the perfect shooters. but it makes for a great game. you don't want a cake walk.its great at night when you can't see anything and it's raining and lightning. thats when a blood sucker jumps out at you and you about jump out of your seat.
then there is the whiners about the guns and armor. i don't have any complaints. so far i have a pistol called the big ben that shoots rifle bullets and damage like a shot gun. i have a vintar bc sniper rifle the best i've seen so far and the only one i've seen. i have the tunder 5.45 rifle and the only one also i've ever seen. its been modified to use the akm 74 rifle bullets which can be found any where. i have a green enclosed armor suit used by the body guards of the scientests. i can walk thru any abnormal areas except the highest radiation. i have two anomalies on my belt that add 60 percent to my already 50 percent impact rating. thats 110 percent impact. that means i can walk up to any guy shooting me on full automatic and give him a one shot to the head and dead. all i carry is my sniper rifle and tunder and keep my weight under 50 pounds so i can run all out anywhere. the game is lot's of fun but i can't figure out why the makers of the game leave it with so many little defects. anyone who likes first person shooters will enjoy the game. one thing i like sometimes when i load up the game there is something different then when i saved it. the game is always changing. SO DON'T LISTEN TO THE WHINERS THAT THE GAME IS NO GOOD. OR THE GUY WHO SAID THE ENDING SUCKS. HIS PROBLEM IS HE CHOSE THE WRONG ENDING. THE GAME IS HARD AND HAS SOME ANNOYING TIB BITS. BUT THE FIGHTING IS SUPER. P.S.if you want the best sniper rifle in the game it is laying on the floor of the army warehouses. it is also the freedom fighters base. it's on your map. next to the base is some duty faction guys. kill them off and get their ammo for the sniper rifle.
Two important points:

I'm pretty new to this game so won't review it except to say that thus far, a few hours in, it delivers. It's fun, it's scary, I am wrapped up in the world - and for all the games that promise the AI will respond rationally to your behavior and interact with each other, this game actually has it.
I saw two silly comments in a review here which almost turned me off from buying the game. So I sought out more information and learned that they aren't true, and wanted to let the facts be known here.
1. (No spoilers.) It was said that all your efforts in this game point you toward a childish, unwarranted, out-of-nowhere ending. The truth is there are 7 endings; the ending you get is decided by your behavior in the game.
2. Someone claimed that the single player game is set up like multiplayer, with a server hosting a client and other stuff to suggest the SP game was tacked onto a deathmatch as an afterthought. What this person saw was the language many FPS game with multiplayer functionality have used for ages while setting up. Usually that stuff is hidden in the console; this game happens to display it on the loading screen. If anything was an afterthought it's the multiplayer, with its smaller maps and less interesting objectives.

A must have for the PC. If you were a huge fan of HL2, F.E.A.R and Oblivion - then this is a must have. You need to play it to hear, feel and believe it yourself.
