This game has some real bugs but once you get the patches and maybe the reality mod it runs fine.
This game is tuff so you have to thinmk about what you are doing but you really do get to do it any way you want to. It is mostly open in the scens that Fable was open if not just a little more so.

I have to completely disagree with J Atkins. The graphics in this game is amazing. The feel is different compared to Far Cry because in Far Cry you are on a beautiful tropical island. This is Chernobyl, man, and it is dusky and dim. It places you in the Chernobyl mood, but the sun comes out periodically. I had no problem killing those soldiers under the bridge to get my first machine gun. There will be plenty of them later in the game though. You can pick up things from dead bodies, but it gets too heavy and you need to trade to get rid of stuff. You need to get money so that you can buy the better protective suit for 15000 and a lot of other things. I like trading aspect of the game. That's why it is not just a FPS, it is also a RPG.

So, I bought this awesome-sounding game back in March or so (pre-order?). With my recent move and everything else, I FINALLY got to sit down today (9/8) and do nothing. I told my wife I am just gonna sit here and play games all day. Well, I'm (censored)ed.

I played it for about eight hours today. It seemed pretty good. Finally started to get a feel for the game and the engine. Took a break for dinner. Came back, and the save game wouldn't load. Just hangs the machine. So I reboot, try again. Same thing. Reboot, start the game, and tell it to check for updates. It says there are none. So I load a previous save game instead of the latest. That loads fine. So I load my newest from there as a launching point. Machine hangs. So I go on Google to look around.

Even tho the game says no updates, I see there have been THREE patches since it was released. So I get the newest one and install it.

Now, the internals of the savegames have changed so it refuses to load the old file!!! How (censored) useless is that - to have a patch to a game render all previous saves totally useless. Not upgrade and never go back to the older versions (understandable), but no, you're just outta luck - start from the beginning all over again!

I don't have time for this. Vendors need to stop shipping beta software. I'm putting it up for sale Monday at work.

I was just reading the review below that said it wasn't compatible with Vista. It is! I bought it on the release date and my laptop is running vista only and the game works just fine, I didn't need a patch, it worked right out of the box.

As for the game. It's enjoyable, seems a little on the hard side to me. Can't remember what difficulty I'm on but assault rifle ammo is kind of hard to come by and it seems like you never have enough. Other than that it's enjoyable, it reminds me of an FPS version of fallout (which would be a cool idea for a game and I hope they make one.)

Good but not great.

If your an FPS fan this game is definitely for you. STALKER is a great blend of FPS and RPG. So long as you have enough time to put into the game it's very fun. This game is not for the casual player. The missions require a little time to complete, they take a lot of time if you stop to do *any* of the side missions. I'm not an RPG fan but this game was still fun.

Having said that...

Now here is the down side. The game can and will take FOREVER if you actually do all the side missions available. The game is pron to crashing (especially towards the end). The resource management system is so-so, certain items in the game cost way to much, items that are essential to completing some of the missions. Overall the game is fun, and is worth playing, but not at $40 or $50, at $20 hell yeah**.

Before you buy you really should know the following info....beware...this next part is a spoiler.

**spoiler alert**

Last but not least, the end of the game is awful! It sucks! I mean bad! Why bad? Nothing happens! You get to Chernobyl (the last level of the game) only to speak with a wish granter. Your character wishes for wealth! Your character then thinks he's being showered in gold coins, but then some ruble falls on him and he dies. THAT'S IT! After all the brawling, after traversing the huge levels, that's it. Nothing innovative, or original, not even anything standard or cliche; like a big explosion or a crazy tough (and possibly huge) end monster. You make a wish and die. So this game is fun...until the end...the end cuts the game of right before you feel like something awesome is about to happen. But nothing awesome happens! Also note, after you beat the game you can't go back and play all the side missions. You have to start over or load a previous game. Like I said this game is well worth it...at $20. But don't pay $40 or $50...it's not worth it. Play Half Life 2, if you haven't already. --->Half Life 2 PC

Not for the casual gamer!

I am not a hard core, competitive or highly skilled gamer, for this reason I play games on their easiest difficulty level. For me that's usually challenging enough to enjoy. That's not the case with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

A trend I've noticed in the game industry is that the game companies are turning their backs on casual game players like me by making their games too difficult even on the easiest difficulty level unless you are a skilled game player.

The first of these I encountered was Far Cry, I was unable to get anywhere in the game even on the easiest difficulty setting, the enemies were too aggressive, too good, and did way too much damage too quickly, I soon gave up on the game in frustration.

I recently bought S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and found that it also ignores casual game players. Again on the easiest play level, the enemies are too aggressive, too good, and do way too much damage too quickly. After several days of playing it off and on and unable to complete even the first mission, I have given up on it in frustration and uninstalled it. I will most likely list it on eBay and move on.

Pitty, it looked like a really neat game....

Too many bugs!!

If you buy this game, you're gonna need a can of Raid to get rid of all the Bugs! . Wait another 6 months to a year from now when THQ finally gets around to developing a decent patch for this game. Save your money for now. Buy this game at your own risk!

Not even worth 5$ *CONTAINS SPOILERS*

So I bought this on the day it was released, and was handed a copy of a buggy piece of s*it, that like many game companies, forced ME to beta-test it for them so they could patch it. It was nearly unplayable, some artifacts did the OPPOSITE of their stated bonus (woe to me when equipped the 'stops bleeding' artifact only to die 5 seconds after I jumped off a ledge and skinned my knee)

Okay - so I figured that I've spent 55$ on this piece of trash, I'll wait 3 or 4 months and then play it again when it's finally patched. So I waited and re-installed it last week.

If anyone is still considering this - it's not even worth 5$ wholesale, they did two patches and stopped, it's still broken and chances are will NEVER be fixed. And I should mention, the patches are not compatible with any saved games - forcing you to replay the entire game from the beginning!

How ANYONE can rate this 5 stars is WAY beyond me, THQ must hire people to make accounts here and vote on its products. I'm sorry - but "great graphics!" does not make an excellent game. If I wanted to look at pretty pictures I'd go to a museum thank you very much! I still can't believe I trusted the reviews here and spent full price on this.

The P.D.A. STILL drives you to the wrong places for quests, mobs can walk against a wall on the ground floor and 'appear' on the 4th floor of a building as they advance forward, horribly punishing at the beginning until you 'skill up' enough not to not miss 29 out of 30 shots in a clip, and by the time you get an assault rifle you are so accurate you don't even have to aim; you just headshot people from the hip, if you shoot someone they stop being a targetable object while the 'pain animation' happens - you can only wound someone while they are 'standing' and they are completely invulnerable during the 'oh no - I've been shot!' animation. You can not 'circle strafe' and if you try to dodge left or right as you run, you stop and begin to walk. Tripping over the smallest ledge also turns off the auto-run, I guess there's allot of debris to trip over or something. My worst gripe is that an opponent with a pistol will headshot you from 300 yards, in the dark, during a thunderstorm!

Supposedly there are "eight different endings" but if you play this game as anyone would, i.e drag everything back to the vendor to make cash to get better equipment or at LEAST a decent gun, the game PENALIZES you for having "too much money" - and in the end the wish you ask the wish-stone for is "I want to be rich!" and you die horribly...

Hard...but very fun!

This game is defiantly for the more experienced gamers.
For the first few hours of playing I was cursing like a sailor with tourettes. It was almost impossible. Every little thing in the game = instant death. That is until I stopped trying to play it like Quake, running around with guns blazing, and started playing more like Splinter Cell...cover, wait, sneak, kill.

The real world physics are what sets this game apart from others.
Such as the smart npc AI and the weight system where your character will move slower and jump different, depending on how much stuff you have in your inventory.
There are tons of enemies that will attack on sight, even while you are accessing your inventory.
The items in this game aren't laying around everywhere, you have to learn how to go about finding them and then decide what to take depending on where you are heading to.
You're character will tire get hungry & bleed, so find a safe place to stop patch up and replenish.

The playing field is massive like in Elder Scrolls. There is a lot to explore so it doesn't get boring when you have to walk great distances.

The graphics, lighting and effects are very cool as well.

You WILL have to download the latest patch as the game is buggy when first installed. Other than that little thing this game rocks!
