More RPG than FPS

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 4 / 7

Much longer learning curve than the usual FPS. Lots to keep track of and many choices to make. Must admit I haven't put the effort into it yet as I'm not one to game for hours on end. Best have a high end computer before attempting. My 3.2GHz with 256 video card and 1GB RAM is still jerky even on medium setting.

UPDATE: Had to lower game resolution to Low. Trying to figure out inventory, quests and trading make game too convoluted to enjoy. If you're a control freak into micromanaging and interacting with other characters it might be fun for you. If you just want to load a game and get down to business, forget it. And I won't even mention that just loading a game can take 3-4 minutes. Well, maybe I will. It makes Steam look good.

It is a frustrating headache that makes Doom 3 fun!

I am quite upset that Valve has yet another delay with Half Life 2 and Crysis is still in development so I thought, lets give this a try!

Ummm, a waste of $40.00. Now I have a complete up to date system. More than the system requirements and the game is ridiculously slow and the graphics engine....um, it looks like the game was made with a commodore 64.

The PDA is a neat idea, but does not work well in a sense that there is way too much information to be sorting out while trying to enjoy the game. If I wanted to read a novel, I would not have bought a game...get it?

The missions sometimes make no sense and you spend literally hours wandering around throwing bolts at lightning flashes hoping you are not suddenly needing to stop the radiation from killing you.

There is so much you have to keep track of, I feel like I need to go see someone about ADD.

Do I take this, or take that, does this ammo work with this gun, does this suit work better with this, or AHHHHHHH!! Keep this rifle, or not, take food, drinks, nope too heavy, now what..here is that ADD thing I was mentioning earlier!

Not to mention the AI, even on low setting, is painfully accurate. I literally unloaded 12 rounds of a shotgun point blank at a zombie (a stalker that seemed possessed) and he finally fell only to writhe in pain on the ground. Meanwhile I am pegged from far away by another zombie walking with the gun at his hip. Nice range and accuracy!

The missions are a blur and confusing, they go no where, they end for no reason regardless of the time in the PDA and sometimes you cannot even complete the mission due to the bugs.

The game has also kicked out to the desktop on numerous occasions. I do not have Vista so do not ask.

It seems like a neat idea, but it was too big to try and package and get right and it just seems to be a big mess.

This took six years to complete? Half Life 2 took 6 and well, I think there is an obvious difference.

The world is not expanded and huge, there are different levels that make the load times of Steam look quick. Going from one world to the next takes literally forever and it gets confusing.

Unfortunately I am going to try and finish it as I am stuck with the game.

There is no support for this product, it is an email based system that wants you to send them a report of your dxdiag so they can improve it with a patch.

Speaking of patches, the one they came out with erased all of my saved games. So it was play with the bugs, or start over. Nice huh?

I would say wait, but with no first person shooters out there, it is either you like it or not, once Half Life 2 Episode 2 or Crysis hits, this game will go back with Area 51 and Sin...

Tarkovsky's Stalker becomes a video game, who knew ?

This is based on the masterpiece of a movie called "Stalker" by Andrei Tarkovsky. You can find it here on Amazon Stalker: A Film by Andrei Tarkovsky . In the movie, the Zone is an area where aliens have landed and a scientist and a writer desperately want to reach its cener through the guidance of a stalker (a guide). Suposedly, at the center of the Zone there is a room where if you are able enough to survive, can fulfill all your wishes. Very philosophical but in typical Tarkovsky style it is slow and cumbersome.
Many things in the game reminded me of the movie, like the anomalies and the fact that Stalker uses bolts as his guidance. I recommend it to all funs of the game.

stalker is a good fps game. i am a serious gamer and have played all the best including halo, bf2, bf2142, half-life, oblivion, cod2 etc etc. i will list the good, the bad and the ugly. i also downloaded the most recent patch.

the good:

awesome graphics
non-linear (you can roam around)
interesting concept/idea
creepy with some surprises

the bad:

AI in some situations is toast. for example, i have seen the AI figure pointing their weapon in a different direction but i'm being shot at. at a distance they do not react properly.

you can't drive ANY vehicles.

you see plenty of helicopters but you will NEVER pilot one or ride in one.

you can pump a clip or two into an enemy and then they can kill you in a couple of shots.

NO mounted machine machine guns...even though their are lots of weapons.

the ugly:

buggy as hell. in one instance i tossed a grenade into a room of AI and every one of them came running out. had plenty of glitches in the quest PDA.

if you decide to run through the game and finish the main quest DONT. you cannot go back and do the minor quests you didnt get to. its over.

the ending SUCKED. should have been much cooler.

gray and dark most of the time. why do they do that?

multiplayer sucks

in conclusion, this game COULD have been awesome, but it was not well thought out. thank you and good gaming.

Best PC Game to come along in quite a while

Unlike a lot of people, I didn't really follow the 6-year epic development cycle for STALKER. I mainly heard about it when it first came out a few weeks ago and people likened it to a cross of three of my favorite games - Fallout, System Shock 2 and Deus Ex. So I bought it not having played a demo or anything.

I'll be brief - I love this game.

My impressions have actually changed quite a lot since I first installed and played it. Initially, it ran like a petulant dog on my system (a two-year old Pentium-M laptop with a GeForce Go 6800); the translation into English struck me as being terrible; and I was annoyed by the numerous bugs.

But once I gave up trying to run the thing with DirectX 9 shaders and dynamic lights (I settled on DirectX 8 mode), the thing ran like butter. A few hours into the game, you realize what an achievement it is. It's got a more fully realized world than nearly any other game out there; it's a true PC game, so it doesn't feel like a clunky console port; the number of cool objects and weapons to find is quite large; and the visual environment is very impressive, down to lighting storms at night and sad gusts of wind blowing dried leaves down deserted streets.

I don't necessarily recommend this game to everyone: especially those with a low tolerance for less-than-perfect translations, tweaking graphical settings, and a few bugs. The quest system is a little cumbersome, and the story a little hard to follow at times. In addition, it's not the most casual of games - the inventory system actually counts each individual bullet as part of the weight in your backpack! That's got to be a first.

But for those who are willing to be a little patient, this one is 100% worth it - a real must buy.

close to great

I think people is been too hard with this game, i found it pretty good, even when my machine is not the best for the game, it is realistic (well, you know what i mean) and who wants a game when anyone can defeat you. four stars because could be better.

awsome game

Not many games from developers from this area make it to America but its obvious why this one did.

Overall I really like this game. I haven't really been a fan of first person shooter games, I have always been more of a RTS player. I tried this one on a recomendation and I love it. I expect I may try a few more now. I have been playing this game for almost 2 months and it has a lot to it. It does offer some very challenging play. I have heard it was a hard game, but as I stated I haven't really played this kind of game so I wasn't comparing it to anything basically I was a clean slate and I enjoy it. It offers a multitude of missions that you can multi-task. The game was developed in russia and this give a different spin on it ( I like that). The weapons are plenty, they lean tward russian made/developed, but also a variety of "NATO" weapons (GP 37 rifle is a favorite). Upgradeable weapons with grenade launchers , scopes and scilencers. A nice selection of body armor is spread out through the game. Armor can be found in hidden spots, stashes, earned or purchased from traders. A variery of other charactors to encounter from neutral stalkers like yourself to factions like Bandits, military, zombies and neutral factions. This creates and excellent group of enemies and potential enemies(or allies). The game also has a list of obsticles, don't forget it takes place around Chernobyl, there are radiation obsticles along with other anomilies and a varietiy of mutants that can kill you or slow you down. So my overall rating is very fun and challenging. With al the weaponds, missions and other charactors and their temperment it creates avery sophisticated game, rated mature for blood and guts obviously, but mature language as well. OK here comes the down side. This game can be buggy, I have had to uninstall it a few times and reinstall. I have patched it and still buggy, I feel the patch does make it a different game it accelerates the speed and make the novice setting more like intermediate. Hope this is helpful, although a little buggy it is a set back, but don't let that hold you back from a great game. My hint (or tip) is gather as many medical suplies/ bandages and ammo as you can carry
ENJOY!

Could be much better

My biggest grip is the graphics. I had to run on low setting to get game to run smooth, Yet I have dual video cards in SLI and 2GB of memory. Graphics are similar to Soldier of Fortune series which is old. If not for this I would have rated higher. I haven't finished the game yet but so far story is not to bad and as stated is different depending on what you do. One nice aspect is the AI are not repetitive in that when you restart they are not all in the same place every time. I also feel you should be able to carry more weight like about 75Lbs and am looking for a way to change it in the .ini files maybe.

Radiation isn't always bad.............

This game is a must play for FPS fans. Be prepared to devote many hours in front of the screen attempting to conquer this one. The playing areas are immense, the AI is superb, and the story line is very good. No two "saved game" reloads are the same, which keeps you on your toes. I would have given it five stars, but the inventory access and the incessant walking was annoying at times. That being said, it's abosultely one of the best and toughest games I've ever played.
