STARCRAFT is FUN

StarCraft is an excellent strategy war game with arcade action! If you like Command and Conquer and other build up your base and technology and attack the other guy type of games you will LOVE this game. Comes with stratagy guides for both games, StarCraft and StarCraft BroodWar which are great to look at and have good strategies and secrets of the game.

What I really like about is that the characters are LARGE enough to see well, but not so large that you can't have couple of hundred or so of them on screen battling it out. If you remember the original Command and Conquer, you needed a magnifying glass to view the little men characters. In StarCraft they are about a half an inch tall, or larger for tanks and other big units 2-3 inches!! NICE!! Plus all battles are real time with great sound effects, non-laster/missle weapons are just seen on impact hitting the target.

The story line is good too, it is fun to hear the characters argue with each other during the mission briefings. Don't forget to constantly click on a character in the game to hear some REALLY FUNNY responses (This commander is wacked!) and have fun interpreting the Zerg noise ones! And you can create your own senarios with the game editor included.

The Sequel BroodWar has more of the great stuff with 2 additional units for each species, one air and one ground. Whether you battle as the Mighty Terrians, the Technologically advanced Protoss, or the Overwhelming Zerg you will enjoy yourself in single or multi-player action! A classically FUN game!!

Best RTS ever!!!

StarCraft is the best real time strategy game ever. It has three UNIQUE races, so it doesn't feel like your doing the same thing on each one. There is absolutely NO limit to what kind of game you can make, because StarCraft includes a map maker. Even if you usually borrow games and copy, do us all a favor and quit piracy. StarCraft is well worth your money for the original and Brood War the expansion. Also, this is the most addicting game ever made! Be careful about how much time you allow yourself to play StarCraft...

Old but still Awesome

I got this game when it first came out and decided to share my view on things. I don't know what changes have taken place since the last time I played... but this game is addicting. Even with its 2D graphics its still a game to contend with today. There are hundreds of players on at a time and they have custom maps. You can create armys with up to 255 units and there are many different strategies.

My personal best record was "2300 wins /730 losses /110 disconnects.

Remember, Zerg are fastest, Protoss are strongest, Terran are most versitle.

Incomparable

In the distant future a small group of human exiles have been doomed to fight for survival on the edge of the galaxy. Through military strength, espionage and deceit, a unified Terran government has maintained an uneasy peace. As resources run short, however, these Confederate nations find themselves looking towards the rich worlds of their alien neighbors, the enigmatic Protoss. To further complicate matters, it seems that a previously unknown and deadly species known only as the Zerg has entered Protoss space and is destroying everything in its path. The time for war has come... As the military leader for your species, you must gather the resources you need to train and expand your forces and lead them to victory. 30 unique missions will challenge you across three different campaigns as you control the fate of the galaxy.
In this real-time, futuristic war strategy game, each scenario has a specific goal to be attained, generally in the form of "kill _______ and keep _______ alive." Its primary attraction is that for most of the campaigns you can determine the composition of your force instead of merely being assigned one. Paul Simon once romanticized that "There must be fifty ways to leave your lover." Well, like love, we all dream of war in our own way, and Starcraft provides plenty of choice. You are generally given a command center into which you must hoard resources, and from there you must build the factories, barracks, starports, or other necessary buildings to create your army. This additional level of strategizing "above" the battle is engaging, and prompted me once to make a new plan, Stan, replaying a level in which I had been successful, not something I normally do in these long games. Both the number and variety of units you can create is large. In this way you can build to suit your own style of war, whether you like to slip out the back, Jack, drop off the key, Lee, or run a cloaked ghost in to target a nuclear attack on their command station...uh...Nathan.
However, it is this amount of choice that also makes this game difficult to master. It's not to be confused with Myth or chess (a popular board game) where you learn the pieces and the moves easily but spend the rest of your fascination learning how to best apply those moves. Instead, the choice is so broad that frequent pauses to consult the guide interrupt much of what should be the most exciting play. Additionally, the complexity increases as new abilities arise deeper in the game, though the pace of these "advancements" eventually slows. As you are learning these new abilities and weapons, you also have to control the production in a very hands-on way. In the barracks, for instance, you can choose to create one of three "soldiers:" a marine, a firebot, or a ghost. Each takes a different amount of the two resources you continuously mine, but you can only order the barracks to make up to five, in any order and combination. When it has made those five it stops and waits for your next order. I found that frustrating, especially when I was engaged in a battle that was not very close to the barracks, so I had to continually return and order five more. This same complication arises for weapons upgrades and the creation of ground and air weapons. It seems minor, but it makes a drawn-out battle harder to win.
Additionally, the Myth player in me found the controls a little less than intuitive, although that soon faded. Looking at the full-board map in the lower left corner will often help you determine just what it is that you are to destroy when the directions are less than clear, and moving the buildings closer to the action, which you can do relatively easily, helps alleviate some of the production concerns mentioned above. Like other group-combat games, it seems that your troops never pick the right enemy to target, and that some troops simply choose not to engage, even when the soldier next to them is being shot. However, when they battle without my command, they usually do well (unlike in other strategy games such as Age of Empires). You can also build your SCVs, the builders and miners, into positions where they can't get out, but I don't consider this a drawback. In fact, I found it oddly entertaining for the first few scenarios.
With that said, I remind you that I spent a lot of time playing this game. Intelligent planning and mind-numbing destruction makes a pretty well balanced combination. I recommend reading the player's manual after a level or two, to firm up your knowledge and better use your time within the next scenario. Ignore the mythology and the new words beyond what you need to know to fight each battle.
Until you get to the expansion set, that is.
Brood War is just what expansion sets should be: more of the same with something different. The biggest difference is that the story becomes entertaining, and darn near pertinent. The opening cinematic is as engaging as any I have seen, making me partial towards some characters that I had only cared about in the past because I had to keep them alive to complete a level. I will certainly never abandon a marine again.
The new weapons at your disposal make it as much like a new game as an expansion, although I still cannot escape the feeling that I'm being manipulated by the story instead of being the one manipulating events.
Notably different early on is the lack of visual help given on the full-board map. And, as in the original, some of the objectives are left to guesswork. But if you found StarCraft engaging and were disappointed when your final adventure drew to a close (instead of relieved that you could finally put the disk back in the box to make room on your desktop for your MacAddict disks), then this is worth your time and money.
The whole StarCraft experience, through the original and the Brood War Expansion set, is rich and visually entertaining. It's a strategy game that works like a sim game up close, and is engaging for both the alien bloodshed and the strategy required. Blizzard has proven conclusively with this and games like Diablo that they are a creative force to be reckoned with. In fact, had Blizzard had Mrs. Marble as their mythology teacher, I'm sure they would've received at least a B; or, in other icons...

The storyline will suck you right in.

I don't normally play computer games- in fact, the only ones I'd really played were Civ 2 and Civ 3 (and its expansion packs). I love Civ 3 to death but had gotten bored with it and wanted to try something new and different, not a civ-building game. I was ready to buy a Sim game when my boyfriend stopped me and suggested I get the Starcraft Battle Chest instead. He mentioned that he used to play this game with a group of friends and that it was loads of fun. He figured that since I enjoyed strategy and war while playing Civ, I would really like Starcraft. So I put down the Sim game and got this instead.

That was in May. It's now August and I'm still playing the game (Brood War). It has pretty much taken up my whole summer!

While most of the levels are composed of you building up your army to destroy the other guy, there are different versions of this. Sometimes you may have to stay alive for a half hour while they assault you. Or you may be allowed a pre-emptive strike. Or you may need to actually protect your enemy while someone else is attacking you.

While I like these full on, "kill everything on the map" levels, I sometimes prefer the slower installation missions which are usually composed of you controlling just a small group of units trying to get to a goal (retrieving something, destroying something, finding someone, etc.) During these sorts of missions you don't get to build anything- you just try your best to get to your goal while keeping your small strike team alive. I sometimes find them more challenging and fun since they require you to be more tactical (as opposed to just amassing a huge army and laying waste to the enemy).

I agree with many others who have said that this game is extremely well balanced among the 3 races. One isn't more powerful than the other; each race has their strong units and their weak units. That being said though, I like playing as the Protoss the most.

The game also has a wicked sense of humor. Click on a unit over and over to "piss" them off and you may be surprised to hear the things they say!

But I think that what I enjoy the most is the storyline in both Starcraft and Brood War. I'm often impatient to finish a level because I want to see what happens next. The folks at Blizzard have crafted such an engaging and detailed universe, it's almost like a movie. It'd be cool if they actually took the plot and made it into a movie someday! Many of the main characters have such complicated and detailed personalities that you really start to care for some and hate the others over the course of the game. I myself am such a HUGE fan of Tassadar that I bought his action figure!

I really, really hope that they make a sequel to this game, but not just because I want to play more-hell, I can just download the maps from Blizzard. No, I want to see what happens next in the story! The end of Brood War definitely leaves the door open for a sequel!

Anyway, buy the game. You will not regret it.

A legend that will never fade away..

This game is a legend, no less. Blizzard has completely changed the RTS genre forever by publishing this game, and millions of people still play this game even though so many other RTS games have been released since then, including all those acknowledged, nominated, award-winning games with full 3D graphics and even including Blizzard's own creation of Warcraft3.

Why?

It's just that good. There is no other stragety game that stands up to the level of Starcraft when it comes to gameplay.

The balance and uniqueness of 3 races that are in the game is just as beautiful as it can ever get. So many strageties are available, according to situations and the map you play on...

Whether you're a RTS mania or just some casual player, you will definitely love this game. Have I ever met anyone in r/l that disliked this masterpiece. (My parents not included)

This game should be in the Hall of Fame. It is a shame that RTS isn't a popular genre and so many people missed this greatness, (but still millions of people bought it =P)

Until the day that it earns the fame and respect of games like Pac Man, Tetris, Ping Pong....Starcraft will live on.

Millions of people that you can meet on Battle.net say so.

Best rts game ever

i will start by saying that in my opinion and in many others that this is the best rts game of all time. The battle chest is an extremely good deal seing as how i payed 40 bucks for both the games seperate without any strategy guide. Even though that is a lot of money it was definetly worth it.
Graphics: well, lets face it the graphics arent as good as some of todays rts games, but you have to remember that starcraft was created a very long time ago and for those days rts games starcraft had really good graphics.
Strategy: I cant even begin to telll you how much strategy is involved in this game. First of all there are three races all of which with many strategies. There are about 10 different base strategies for each race. and you can bend or twist those strategies to make up your own completely
Multyplayer: What really makes a good game is its online multyplayer. This may be the best part of all with starcraft. To get online just follow these simple steps, first you must download the latest version of online gameplay, then pick a unique screename and an exclusive password, click create account, then type in your screename and password and click go and your online. You then can go to a quick match to match you up as quick as possible, join a game that has some of the features you would like, or host a game and custamize your whole game from the map you will play on to the rules you will make. please keep in mind hosting a game will provide a much better and more fun game but will take a lot longer to get the game started.
Campaign: the campaigns are very good and extremely challenging, but are kind of boring once you have beaten them, but that dosn't matter because this game has great online play.
Different Races: Terran: the standard human army with marines tanks and battleships. Terran are particularly strong defensively and at weakening their oppenent and best the protoss easiest.

Zerg: the zerg are monsters mutated things creepy creatures with small fast clawing zerglings strom powerhouse ultralisks and spore shooting guardians. Zerg are best at rushing and wiping out their opponent in the begining of the game. They are paticulary best against the terran.

Protoss: My favorite, Protoss are super intelligent alienst with high teck weaponry from the fast slashing zealot, to the bomb shooting reaver, to the mightiest of all units the protoss carrier.

BUY THIS GAME WITHOUT

Ok. If you are reading this, I presume that you don't own Starcraft. Now, follow these directions.
1. Go to a store
2. Purchase Starcraft (preferably SC Battle Chest)
3. Go home
4. Install it
5. Play it
These are very important, because if you don't play Starcraft, you are missing out on one of the best games in the whole (bleep)ing world. Seriously. It's versatile, it's beautiful, it's excellently planned, it's one of a kind, and it is a CLASSIC!

http://walkofgame.com/inductees/inductees.html

Yes, it's an inductee. It's that good. (Note: go to the 2005 inductees). Now, I would start going on a really really long rant on how to play, how to fight off rushes, and how to kill your enemy, but I don't have time to type that, and you shouldn't be reading this. YOU SHOULD BE AT THE STORE BUYING STARCRAFT!! Now GO! GO! EN TARO ADUN!

And if you play protoss, please build photon cannons.
